    Samuel Agu bags Imo SWAN Heartland Player of the Month Award for April

    Heartland FC central defender, Samuel Agu, is the latest to be recognised as the Imo SWAN Heartland FC Player of the Month for April following his blistering performance last month.

    The defender got over 90 percent of the votes cast by members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Imo Chapter to become the eighth winner of the prestigious award.

    He defeated his teammates namely  Christian Nkwo; Emmanuel Charles, the winner of the award in March; Chukwudi Agor and Chinedu Ozor who also put up commendable outings last month.

    Agu who provided stability and calming influence to Heartland defence in all the games he played in April with three clean sheets out of the five games played in all competitions was among the few turning points of a positive month which produced two victories and two draws.

    He scored two goals and was a threat in the final third in all the games played despite ensuring that his partnership with Chinedu Ozor does not ship in goals anyhow.

    The former Akwa United defender along with Emmanuel Charles will be presented with their award’s  plagues for March and April Player of the Month and a token prize money courtesy of an anonymous sponsor tomorrow , May 7th,  shortly before the home game versus Plateau United in Owerri.

    Both will become the second and third players to benefit from the prize money that has now become a norm until the end of the season.

    SWAN pledges total media support  for Customs-hosted African Women’s Club Volleyball Championship

    The FCT Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has pledged comprehensive media coverage and strategic partnership for the upcoming African Women’s Club Volleyball Championship, set to hold in Abuja between  April  1st  and 14th.

    During a courtesy visit to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, at the Customs Headquarters in Maitama, Abuja, the FCT SWAN leadership reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the championship receives widespread media visibility and engagement.

    Speaking during the meeting, FCT SWAN Chairman Kelechi Onwudiwe described the tournament as a groundbreaking moment for volleyball in Nigeria and assured that the Abuja-based sporting media would play a key role in promoting the event.

    “This is a unique opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s capability as a host nation. As the sporting media in the capital city, we will fully mobilize our platforms to ensure a viral and well-publicized championship. This is the beginning of a productive working relationship between Customs and FCT SWAN,” Onwudiwe stated.

    Also SWAN Secretary-General Ikenna Okonkwo who  represented  President Isaiah Benjamin,  emphasized the association’s unwavering dedication to promoting volleyball and other less-publicized sports.

     “As journalists, our role goes beyond football. Volleyball, like other growing sports, deserves the right media attention, and we are committed to ensuring that this championship gets the coverage it truly deserves,” Okonkwo said.

    The Nigeria Customs Service, as the sole sponsor of the anticipated championship, is poised to stage a historic tournament, with its volleyball team aiming to improve on their fourth-place finish in 2021 and make history by winning on home soil.

    In reaction, CG Adeniyi welcomed FCT SWAN’s partnership, stressing that the media will play a pivotal role in amplifying the championship’s impact.

     “Our goal is not just to host but to make history. The role of the media is crucial in making this championship a success, and we are excited to work closely with FCT SWAN to achieve this,” the CG said.

    Besides Chairman Onwudiwe and SWAN Secretary General Okonkwo, the FCT SWAN delegation also had Vice Chairman Victor Okoye, Secretary Samuel Ahmadu, and Welfare Officer Joan Iwuchukwu in attendance.
