  • Driver faces N1.6m car theft charge

    45-year-old driver, Simon Ogbu, has been brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing a car valued at N1.6 million.

    Ogbu, a resident of Oworonsoki, Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clifford Ogu said the defendant committed the offences on January 28, at Oniru Estate, Lagos.

    He alleged that the defendant and one other person at large stole the Hyundai Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) belonging to Coscharis Mobility Ltd.

    Ogu said the complainant entered a filling station to buy fuel, and in the process the defendant attacked him and stole the car.

    He said after the complainant filled the tank, the defendant snatched the car and drove off.

    “The vehicle was tracked, recovered and the defendant was arrested,’’ the prosecutor said.

    The offences contravene sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Following his plea of not guilty, Magistrate J.A. Adegun released the defendant on N200, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    Adegun said the sureties should be employed and show evidence of two years tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned till May 8.

  • Suspected shoplifter faces theft charge

    A 32-year-old unemployed man, Sunday Ebiefegha, was yesterday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly shoplifting items worth about N2.6 million from a supermarket.

    The defendant, whose residential address was not given, is standing trial on a three-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Friday Mameh said the defendant and others at large committed the offences between May 30, 2018 and April 21, at Adiba Supermarket, 54, Adeola Odeku Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.

    He alleged that on May 30, 2018, the defendant stole from the supermarket some items, including expensive brands of wine, four Hennessey X05, eight Ciroc vodka coconut peach, four Moet ice and Remi Martin.

    Mameh said the brands of wine were valued at N2.5 million.

    The prosecutor alleged that the defendant returned to the same supermarket the second time on April 21 and stole items worth N66, 300.

    He said the items stolen the second time were Moet necter rose, Moet eye imperial, Ions moifet wine, a bottle of Hero beer, a pack of towel and tissue paper.

    According to him, the total value of the items allegedly stolen was about N2.6 million.

    Mameh said the offences contravened sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The defendant, however, denied committing the offences.

    Magistrate A. O. Olukemi granted him N500, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She said the sureties must show evidence of three years tax payments to the Lagos State Government and be employed.

    The case continues on May 13.

  • Two salesmen face N4.3m theft charge

    TWO salesmen have been arraigned at two Chief Magistrates’ Courts for allegedly stealing  pharmaceutical products worth N4.3 million.

    Adam David, 33, was arraigned for allegedly stealing N2.3million worth of pharmaceutical products before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court. Michael Okolie, 25, was charged with stealing medicines worth N2million from his employer before a Yaba Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    At the Ikeja court, prosecuting Inspector Benson Emuerhi said David committed the offence with others now at large last November 5 at 23, Ogunlowo Street, Ikeja.

    He alleged that the defendant obtained pharmaceutical products from SKT Health Care Pharmaceutical Ltd, but failed to remit the N2.3 million realised from sales.

    “The defendant sold the drugs and converted the money to his use.

    “Efforts by the complainant to get the defendant to refund the money proved abortive,” Emuerhi said.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat granted him N200, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case continues on April 4.

    At Yaba, Okolie pleaded not guilty to the one-count charge of stealing from his employer.

    Prosecutor Thomas Nurudeen alleged that the defendant committed the offence on February 8, at 42A, Ashogbon Street, Idumota, Lagos.

    He said the defendant was employed by the complainant, Mr. Tochukwu Nduka, as a salesman in the pharmacy he had just established.

    Nurudeen said the defendant, who resumed work that day, stole the medicines in the pharmacy.

    “My Lord, it was the opening day of the pharmacy. Nduka left the defendant at the pharmacy to get to the bank. When he returned, the pharmacy was empty.

    “During investigation, it was discovered that the defendant had an accomplice whom we are yet to identify.

    “They stole the pharmaceutical products worth over N2million,” he said.

    Chief Magistrate K. B. Ayeye granted the accused  N250,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She said the sureties must be employed with evidence of three years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    The case was adjourned till March 27.

     

  • Accountant, sales assistant face N2.3m theft charge

    An accountant, Samson Adejoh, and a sales assistant, Chisom Uzor, have been arraigned at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N2.3 million.

    They pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Inspector Christopher John said the defendants committed the offence at Mouka Foam Nigeria Ltd., Alagbado, Lagos, on January 1.

    He alleged that the fraud was discovered when the company’s books were audited.

    “The duo stole the money and failed to remit N2.3 million into the company’s account.

    “All fingers pointed at the defendants because they were in charge of the company’s accounts and sales,” the prosecutor alleged.

    Chief Magistrate P. E. Nwaka granted the defendants N300,000 bail with two sureties each in the like sum.

    The case continues on April 4.

  • Suspected cultists face theft charge

    SEVEN  men suspected to be members of a cult yesterday appeared at a Badagry Magistrates’ Court  for alleged stealing,   weapons display and breach of the peace.

    Ojo  Jimoh, 27, Taiwo Jimoh, 21, Hammed Adebayo, 22, Adeniyi Abass, 18, Michael Segun, 18, and two minors were said to have conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace on February 24 at Shibiri, Ajangbadi, Lagos.

    They pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Akpan Ikem  alleged that the accused stole one Itel P31 phone valued at N37,000, Techno W1 valued at N17,000 and N15,700 cash belonging to Anthonia Emeka.

    Magistrate Patrick Adekomaya granted the accused N200,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    He said the sureties must show evidence of tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

    The case continues on April 4.

  • Three face N13m theft charge

    Three men, Iyanu Ogunsanmi, 20,  Eze Izuchuckwu, 21, and Emeka Iheagwu, 29, were yesterday arraigned before   a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court for  allegedly stealing a Mitsubishi mini-truck and 290,000 empty crates of beer   worth N13 million.

    Iheagwu allegedly received the stolen items from his co-defendants.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Anthonia Osayande said the trio and one other committed the offence on January 23, at 15, Ilamoye Street, Ijeshatedo, Surulere, Lagos.

    She alleged that Ogunsanmi and Izuchuckwu sold the crates to Iheagwu, who knew they were stolen.

    The prosecutor said the stolen items belonged to Denike Agoro Enterprises Ltd.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Oluyemisi Adelaja granted them N100, 000 bail, with two sureties each in the like sum.

    She adjourned till March 11.

     

  • Suspect faces theft charge

    A 39-year-old sales representative, Kolade Timothy, who allegedly stole his employer’s N723, 000, has been arraigned at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    He pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Michael Unah alleged that the defendant committed the offences from March 2017 to December 2018, at Smart B. Ocean Company Ltd, Meiran, Lagos.

    He said the defendant stole the money from the complainant, Mrs. Ajose Titilayo.

    Unah said the defendant, who also doubled as a driver to the complainant, admitted he stole the money to eat and take care of his sick wife.

    “Attempts to recover the money from the defendant proved abortive,” the prosecutor said.

    Chief Magistrate A. A. Fashola  adjourned till February 27.

     

     

  • Panel beater faces van theft charge

    A 40-year-old panel beater, Adekunle Adegbeso, yesterday appeared at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for alleged theft of a Lagos State Ministry of Sports Toyota Hilux Pick-up valued at N4.5 million.

    Adegbeso pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Michael Unah said the defendant committed the offence with others at large in July 2017 at Ladoje Street, off Oko-Oba, Lagos.

    He alleged that the defendant, who was given the Toyota Hilux with number-plate HN697EKY to repair, sold it and converted the money to his use.

    “Attempts to retrieve the van or the money from the defendant proved abortive,” Unah said.

    Chief Magistrate A. A. Fashola granted the defendant N400, 000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    He said the sureties should be employed and show evidence of two years tax payments to the Lagos State Government.

    Fashola added that the sureties should be relations of the defendant and live in the court’s jurisdiction.

    The case continues on March 20.

  • Two N500,000 theft charge

    Two men, Chinedu Ossai, 34; and Ikenna Chukwu, 37; were yesterday arraigned at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly breaking into a shop and stealing generator parts worth N500,000.

    Ossai, a driver, and Chukwu, a cart pusher, according to Prosecuting Sergeant Ishola Samuel, committed the offence last December 15 at a shop near Ladipo bus stop, Sogunle, Lagos.

    He alleged that the accused conspired and broke into the shop of the complainant, Mr. Samuel Ogundeji, to steal the generator parts.

    “The duo destroyed the door of the complainant’s shop and stole a generator alternator engine, six cylinder engine, 28m of electrical armoured cable and double charger, and generator radiator, valued at N500,000.

    “The duo were intercepted by a vigilance group in the neighbourhood and handed over to the police,” the prosecutor said.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate I.A. Abina granted them N300, 000 bail with two sureties each.

    She adjourned till February 6.

  • Contractor faces N39.7m theft charge

    A building contractor, Dehinbo Olatunji, who allegedly obtained N39,730,000 under false pretence, was yesterday brought before an Igbosere Chief Magistrates’ Court.

    Olatunji, 38, was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Folashade Botoku on a two-count charge of obtaining and stealing.

    Prosecuting Inspector Haruna Ibrahim alleged that the defendant committed the offence last June at Wasimi, Maryland, in Lagos.

    Ibrahim said Olatunji obtained N39,730,000 from Emmanuel Sunday, who deposited it in the defendant’s Zenith Bank account bearing the name ‘Dehinbo Anthony Olatunji.’

    The court heard that the defendant collected the cash following an agreement to complete Sunday’s building in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, but he failed to do so.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened sections 314 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Olatunji pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Botoku granted him N1million bail with two sureties in the like sum, among other conditions.

    The case continues on February 14.
