  • 24-year-old faces theft charge

    A 24-year-old man, Pakute Oseni, has been arraigned at an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, for allegedly stealing a vehicle, worth N4.5 million.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oseni, of no fixed address, was in court on charges of conspiracy and stealing.

    The prosecutor, Folake Ewe, told the court that Oseni and others at large, allegedly conspired to steal the vehicle.

    She said Oseni was alleged to have stolen a Lexus Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), registered as AGL 553 DX, valued at N4.5 million.

    Ewe said: “The offences were committed on January 23, 2016 at 8 pm, at Alarere, on new Ife Road, Ibadan, where the car was parked.”

    She said the offences were contrary to Section 383 and punishable under Section 390 (9) (10A) of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State, 2,000.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Mrs. Jejelola Ogunbona granted the defendant bail at N100, 000 with two sureties.

    She adjourned the case till January 31 for hearing.

    Man docked for stealing Cocoyam in Ekiti

    A 35-year-old man, Bosede  Abiodun, on Tuesday appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court for alleged theft.

    The defendant of no fixed address is standing trial on a count charge of theft.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Monica Ikebuilo, told the Court that, the defendant committed the offence on November 23, at about 09:00 am at Odo village via Ado-Ekiti.

    She alleged that the accused stole cocoyam tubers on the farm of the complainant, valued at N40, 000 belonging to one Ovie Dominic.

    Ikebuilo said that the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Law of Ekiti State 2012.

    The prosecutor asked the court for adjournment to enable her to study the case file and present her witnesses.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    His counsel, Mr Emmanuel Sunmonu, urged the Court to grant him bail, with a promise that he would not jump bail.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Omolola Akosile, granted bail to the defendant ‎in the sum of N10,000, with one surety in like sum.

    Akosile adjourned the case until January 15 for hearing.

    21-year-old arraigned for theft

    A 21-year-old man, Adebisi Gbenga, was yesterday arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court, Ekiti State for alleged theft.

    The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing charge of stealing.

    Police prosecutor Oriyomi Akinwale told the court that the accused committed the offence on November 18 about 2:30pm at New

    Iyin Road, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the accused stole a bag containing Mini-Laptop Computer valued N20,000, Primary and Secondary School Leaving

    Certificates, textbooks and some documents belonging to one Gideon Abiodun.

    Akinwale said the offence contravened section 390 (9) of the Criminal code, Laws of Ekiti State 2012.

    The prosecutor asked for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and assemble his witnesses.

    The accused pleaded not guilty, and his lawyer, Mr Oluwasola Olarewaju, urged the Court to grant him bail, promising he will not

    jump bail.

    The Magistrate, Mrs Modupe Afeniforo, in her ruling, granted the

    accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum and

    adjourned the case until December 13 for hearing.

    A 21-year-old man, Adebisi Gbenga, has been arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Magistrates’ Court in Ekiti State for alleged theft of a laptop bag.

    The accused, whose address is unknown, is facing a charge of alleged stealing.

    The prosecutor, Oriyomi Akinwale, told the court that the accused allegedly committed the offence on November 18 about 2:30 pm, at New Iyin Road, Ado-Ekiti.

    He alleged that the accused stole a bag containing a mini-laptop valued at N20,000.00, primary and secondary school leaving certificates, textbooks and documents belonging to  Gideon Abiodun.

    Akinwale said the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Mosquito net theft lands man in jail

    A Mapo Senior Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan, Oyo State, has jailed a 20-year-old man, Olalekan Adebisi, for six months for stealing 50 pieces of mosquito nets.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mrs. Mercy Aderounmu, said the convict had spent five months in Agodi Prison due to his inability to perfect the bail conditions of N50,000 granted him.

    She said the convict would do a community service for four weeks within the court premises.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adebisi, of no fixed address, was first arraigned on June 7 on a one-count charge of stealing.

    He pleaded not guilty and was admitted to bail with two sureties, but could not perfect the bail conditions.

    Adebisi later changed his plea to guilty on November 13, after spending five months in prison custody, and the case was adjourned till November 20 for facts and sentences.

    Presenting the facts before the court, the prosecutor, Philip Amusan, said Adebisi on May 30 jumped the fence of Bode Health Centre, Ibadan, and stole 50 pieces of mosquito nets.

    He said the convict, on June 3, about 5 am, came back to the health centre and scaled the fence in an attempt to steal again.

    Amusan said Adebisi was arrested in the process by a security guard attached to the health centre and was handed over to the police.

    The prosecutor told the court that Adebisi sold the nets through hawking to buyers he could not identify.

    He said the offence contravened Section 509 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Oyo State 2000.

    Truck driver held for ‘N400,000 theft’

    Rapid Response Squad Operatives have arrested a truck driver, who specialises in recharging call cards from victims’ bank account.

    Ebenezer Oyeneye, 50, who lives at 4, Moyinoluwa Avenue, Ijoko Lemode, Ogun State, was arrested by the decoy team of RRS, who had been on his trail since last year.

    One of Oyeneye’s victims  told officers at Aguda Divisional Headquarters, Surulere that an unknown person has been recharging his phone call card from her bank account since July 2016.

    She noted that the fraud began on July 4 after she received a debit alert from her bank that she had recharged a sum of N1,000 call credit  for her phone line without initiating such transaction.

    “I was amazed when my bank debited my account and the same thing continued for like 11 months,” she said.

    The case was transferred to the  RRS.

    RRS said Oyeneye confessed that he started using a short code in July 2016 to load his call card from people’s bank account.

    He said he resorted to the crime after the truck he was driving was retrieved by the owner due to a misunderstanding.

    RRS quoted him as saying: “I tried it the following day and I got a N3,000 balance which was also credited and so I  continue day in, day out, for weeks and months. I became overwhelmed by the value of my call credit balance and resorted to selling to people around me for months.

    “The maximum I can recharge from the account is N3,000 per day because my network provider restricted me to a daily top up of the said amount.”

    Oyeneye said he had recharged up to N400,000.

    Police spokesman Olarinde Famous Cole, an Assistant Superintendent (ASP) urged members of the public to seek professional advice from their financial institution before connecting their bank account to any online transaction and report immediately any strange activity on their bank account to the necessary authorities.

    Suspect arraigned for alleged bus theft

    A 27-year-old man, Johnson Michael, has been arraigned at an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court in Osun State for alleged theft of a Toyota Sienna car, valued at N1.8 million.

    He is facing a one count charge of stealing.

    The prosecutor, Duro Adekunle, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on October 7 at Deborah Event Centre, Osogbo.

    He said the defendant stole the vehicle, registered as LND 974 AZ, worth N1.8 million, belonging to Lukman Olatunbosun.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol.11 Laws of Osun State, 2003.

    The defendant denied committing the offence.

    His lawyer, Mr. Ranageous Ugwu, prayed the court to grant him bail.

    The Magistrate, Mr. Ashiru Ayeni, granted the defendant bail at N250, 000 with two sureties.

    He adjourned the case till December 22 for mention.

    Attendant in trouble for theft

    A 24-year-old man, John Okonkwo, who allegedly stole his employer’s N3.5 million and invested it in the Mavrodi Mondial Movement (MMM) scheme, has appeared at an Ojo Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The accused, a sales attendant, is facing a charge of stealing.

    Okonkwo pleaded not guilty.

    The prosecutor, Uche Simon, said the accused committed the offence at Shop 26, Zone E, Block 2A, Aspamda Market, Trade Fair Complex, Lagos, between March and October.

    He alleged that the accused put the N3.5 million sales proceeds belonging to his employer, Mrs. Jane Ekweanua, into the Ponzi scheme.

    “Okonkwo put the sales proceeds into MMM without the consent of his employer.

    “It was during auditing that it was discovered that N3.5 million was missing,” Simon said.

    He said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Magistrate, A. S. Okubule, granted the accused N500,000 bail with two sureties.

    She said they must live in the court’s jurisdiction and must be employed.

    Okubule adjourned the case till January 23.

    A 35-year-old man, Rabiu Omotayo, who allegedly stole N360,000 meant for supply of bread to customers, has been arraigned at an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Omotayo, a driver, who lives at Ifako Ijaiye, Lagos, is being tried for alleged stealing.

    The prosecutor, Clifford Ogu, told the court that the offence was committed on October 4 in Agidingbi, Ikeja.

    He said the accused worked with Top Crust Bakery and was asked to distribute bread, worth N360,000 to customers.

    “The customers paid the accused and instead of remitting the money into the company’s account, he converted it to his use,” Ogu alleged.

    He said the accused was handed over to the police and arraigned.

    The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (revised).

    The accused pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Mrs. Taiwo Akanni granted the accused N100, 000 bail with two sureties.

    She adjourned the case till November 27 for mention.
