  • Theme: ‘Dead bones’ shall rise again!

When a terrible thing happens, human beings are quick to erroneously conclude that it is a case of hopelessness and wrap it up fast that the end of the road has come. As a follow up to that, occurrence of a bad event brings the identity of real friends out because when things are good or when one occupies a position of influence or benefit, litany of ‘friends’ hover around the ‘corridors of power’ but when an untoward thing happens, those ‘friends’ are very quick to condemn, destroy, malign and of course ‘borrow the feet of an hare’. Human beings enjoy the relish of fingers covered with stew and abhor the sight of blood stained fingers.

It is however instructive to note that besides the fact that God uses bad times to unveil true friends, He many times uses trials as an ingress to launch His children to a higher level because with God it is never over (Romans 8:28). He is the One that can “… make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert (Isaiah 43:19).

In John 12:24, Jesus Christ said that before a seed can yield lots of fruits, it must first die. At that point of temporal death, it is normal for friends to ‘show their true colours’, while honest friends stand to provide understanding and support, insincere friends bring out their sublime nature, speak vile words and even elope thinking that it has ended. Job, in his moment of ‘death’, experienced same with his wife and trusted allies respectively. When things were good with Job, his wife and friends were there to fellowship with him and enjoy the goodies of his blessings. The moment things turned aslant with him however, his wife asked him to curse God and his friends sat with him, sprinkled dust on their heads and mourned with him ( Job 2:9-13). After their true personalities have been fully revealed, the Almighty God, who has promised never to leave us nor forsake us (Isaiah 49:15-16) restored Job such that his latter end was better than his beginning. ( Job 42:12-16, 8:7)

From the story of the valley of dry bones in Ezekiel 37, God brought Ezekiel to a valley of not only dry and lifeless bones but bones that have been dismembered. God asked him a seemingly illogical question that “… Son of man, can these bones live?” (Ezekiel 37:3a). The response of Prophet Ezekiel that “God thou knowest” could probably be out of knowledge that God can do all things or predicated on his decision not to be rude.

It is common knowledge that bones that are dead don’t have hope of life again but it is worthy of note that the Almighty God has the capacity to do all things (1 Samuel 2:6-7). God therefore gave Ezekiel unambiguous instructions and when he complied as was asked to do, the unbelievable happened; dry bones were joined together and rose up as an army (Ezekiel 37:4-10).

Beloved in Christ, there is no end of the road with God. In Job 14:7-8 God promised that, “… there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease. Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground”. God promised in verse 9 that, “.. through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.” There is surely no bad case with God. The Almighty God who with a command released life to the rotten flesh and bones of Lazarus who was dead for four days can do anything (John 11:39-44; Luke 1:37).

Have you lost your benefactor or your marriage is on the brink of complete breakdown; have you lost your job or you are on the verge of losing it; is it that your close friends have turned against you like Job or you are terribly sick and doctors have even lost hope of your recovery like the woman with the issue of blood (Mk. 5:25-34); are you in debt and there is no way of redeeming your indebtedness like the wife of the deceased son of the prophet (2 Kings 4:1-7) or is your life bent such that things aren’t going well with you as it was with that afflicted woman and you are the subject of demeaning comments among friends (Luke 13:11-13); are you being haunted by the society that you are getting past the age of marriage or conception or there is none to help you like the man by the pool of Bethesda (John 5:1-9).

Is your income insufficient to meet your expenditure and you are unable to meet your obligations? Have you lost any of your priceless possession with no Insurance backing to mitigate the loss? The good news for you is that as the Lord lives, your predicament is a “comma” and not a “full-stop”. The Almighty God shall arise for you and the story of your life shall change for good. He has promised to restore the years that the devourers have destroyed and stolen (Joel 2:25). Beloved, that grave situation is not your abode, it is a temporary domicile and you are going to rise up again. God is going to make you eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord.

The word of God to you at such a time is that He “….will open your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel……. And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the Lord have spoken it, and performed it, saith the Lord (Ezekiel 37:12-14). When God visits your valley of dry bones, not only will you live but all your entitlements shall be returned to you. No wonder the Psalmist said that “when the Lord restores the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream dreams” (Psalm 126:1).

It is for such a purpose that Jesus Christ came to the world brethren, “…. that He might destroy the works of the devil”. (1 John 3:8). The thief (the devil) came to kill, to steal and to destroy but our Lord Jesus Christ came so that we can have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10). Beloved, you have a hope of bouncing back. You have hope of bouncing back in a bigger way and enjoy eternal life when your sojourn is ended here. It therefore doesn’t matter how terrible things are with you now, don’t loose hope because it has not ended. “Weeping may endure for a night’, says David, ‘but joy comes in the morning” (Psalm 30:5). This season is your morning of joy and none can hinder your bouncing back.

What you need to do to enjoy His power of restoration is to destroy the membership card and all alliances you have with the devil, his agents and sin; and change to Jesus’ side, make a commitment not to go back to your past ways, identify with Him openly, allow your walk, work and talk to tally with His and then call His attention to what you are passing through. As He lives who never fails, you shall arise and shine; God will bring your light out and His glory shall be risen upon you, darkness of the earth and gross darkness of the people shall not have dominion over your life again. When God has finished with you, unbelievers shall see your light and take direction cum coverage from your light. Not only that, you shall be so tectonic that Kings and rulers shall regard you as a very important person in the society- Halleluyah! ( Isaiah 60:1-3 paraphrased.)

Prayers: Oh Lord, breathe upon my dry bones during this season and restore all my lost grounds, in Jesus’ name.

  • Theme: Unbending the dysfunctional

Dysfunctionalism is a broad term for a range of personality disorders as defined by the American Lunatic Fringe. This state of health is very sadly becoming the order in our polity today. It is a situation whereby the wrong is taken for correctness and abnormality or seamless law breaking is accepted as the best way of life. It is normal, for instance, to see drivers abandoning their lanes and face oncoming vehicles in high speed under the watchful eyes of law enforcers, as noticed last week on the Apapa-Oshodi expressway in Lagos – a symptom of a bent life!

A bent or dysfunctional state typifies awkwardness, deviation from norm, unexplainable circumstance or mockery of logic; it is a situation where things are not happening in tandem with expectation or where its workings are impaired or abnormal. An abysmal situation can be self-inflicted or orchestrated by an evil hand (Matt. 13:25). A self-inflicted dysfunctional state can be remedied by identification of its root cause and empirical measures are put in place to rectify same. To the contrary are abnormalities that are traceable to the kingdom of wickedness, they defy human attention and can only be mended by spiritual cure. A spiritual dysfunctional state is that awkward life situation that has a medical name or human explanation attached to it but cannot be remedied by medical action or human efforts cum counsel.

A self-inflicted dysfunctional system can be imposed on a person who ignorantly or against counsel innocently or wilfully bypasses boundaries set by God or the experts He has sent for guidance (Isaiah 1:18-19; 1Kings 13:1-24; 1 Sam. 15:1-23) This can be with regards to health (Exodus 15:26), education (Jer. 6:16), marriage (2 Corinthians 6:14), business (Ephesians 6:2-3) etc.

From our text, we are faced with the case of a woman that had lived a bent over (dysfunctional) life for 18years. Her people and peers jeered at her whenever she appeared in the public and temple. People that were ignorant of spiritual law of cause and effect closed their reasoning to what or who could have done this to her (Matthew 13:28) but made her an object of public spectacle. She was an unfortunate personality which exposed her to public odium because of her peculiar circumstances. Understandably, like the case of the woman with the issue of blood who for 12 years who spent all she had to get better but ended worse, she must have tried all sorts within that long years to get better too to no avail ( Mk. 5:25-26).

One day however, Jesus Christ entered the temple and saw her in her dysfunctional state; He saw a rope which powers of wickedness had used to tie her which no x-ray could have seen. Jesus Christ who has all powers in heaven and earth intervened (Matthew 28:18; Col. 1:16-17); He that opens and none can shut came forth (Rev. 3:8); He that says Yes and none can say No (Isaiah 46:10) commanded the ‘spiritual rope’ to be loosed and immediately she was made straight – the bent became unbent. What was impossible for science and man to do for 18years, He did it within seconds! I therefore pray that whatever unexplainable situation any of yours are in now shall receive divine attention during this season of lent to the glory of God, in Jesus’ name

It is instructive to note that there are many individuals, families, marriages, organisations and places of worship that are dysfunctional as a result of sin, evil background or satan. But, the good news is that it is not over. The invitation and arrival of Jesus Christ into any dysfunctional system mindless of how bad things are or how long one has been in that terrible state will turn things around for good. The Almighty God who turned scarcity into surplus within 24 hours shall arise for you and step into your situation during this season of lent. Where it has been said that it is over with you, the Almighty God who remembered the forgotten Mephibosheth and catapulted him from his beggarly state into the palace (2 Samuel 9:1-7) shall intervene for you in the name of Jesus.

Lazarus was in the grave for 4 days and already stinking before Jesus Christ was invited. When He appeared at that ‘bent’ situation, the Resurrection and the Life turned things around and their weeping turned into joy and celebrations (Jn. 11:1-44). The wedding in Cana of Galilee too would have ended on a very sad note if not for His presence and their obedience to Him which made the wedding end on a grandiose level (John 2:1-10) – the ‘bent’ was made straight. Beloved, it is not over with you. The Almighty God is going to intervene in your situation and all your lost years shall be restored, in the name of Jesus.

Are you not where you are supposed to be? Have you entered into trouble and not into sin like Joseph? Are you very bright educationally without a good employment to back it up? Are you experiencing marital disappointments without any justifiable reason? Are you suffering from a strange sickness that has defied medical attention? Is any of your family members behaving irrationally? Is your business or finances going steadily down the hills mindless of your prayers, diligence and strategy? Do you have someone who is on drugs and cannot stop despite all efforts? I have good news for you. It is for these reasons that Jesus Christ came to destroy the dysfunctional works of the devil (1John 3:8b). So, you are not hopeless. Weeping may endure for a night but your joy is here! This is your morning of joy! (Psalm 30:5).

What you need to do for the dysfunctional state to become functional is to invite Jesus Christ into your life, confess your shortcomings to Him as an individual and the shortcomings of our land (2Chronicles 7:14), make a commitment not to sin again, live a life of holiness and love, let Him know what you are passing through and stop looking at man to help you. He is the One that can deliver from captivity and do what no man can do for you. He is the One that can destroy the works of the one that kills, steals and destroys by giving life and giving life that is more abundant (John 10:10). As the Lord lives, before this lent ends, you shall experience divine intervention and we shall all celebrate the joy of deliverance from the shackles of pain, lack and death, in Jesus’ name.

Prayers: Lord God, I don’t have any power of my own. I come to you this day, turn things around for me and give me reasons to celebrate, in Jesus’ name.

  • Theme: His Passover, the Holy Communion and a new dawn

The head that will wear a crown will not leave the world without fulfilling destiny goes a common saying but it is needful to add that this will only happen provided the head remains focused, undeterred and undaunted. It therefore does not matter how unfriendly or severe the economic situation of the land is or how challenging your place of assignment is, provided you are a child of divine purpose and have absolute faith in Him, the Almighty God who operates with times and seasons (Ecclesiastes 3:1, 9:11) will surely have His way concerning your life. You shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth his fruit in his season; your leaf also shall not wither; and whatever you opt to do shall prosper (Psalm 1:1-3).

The Almighty God gave heed to the promises He made to Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3 and prospered the Israelites to the extent that they were objects of envy before King Pharaoh and the Egyptians (Exodus 1:7,10). Following that, the Egyptians “…..made the children of Israel serve with rigour: And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour” (Exodus 1:13-14). Despite every entreaty by God to let them go, King Pharaoh refused to release them from captivity and they served as his slaves for 430 years (Exodus 12:40-41).

As a result of King Pharaoh’s wickedness, God’s anger was ventilated upon the Egyptians and they consequently passed through lots of hardship. From our text, God informed Moses that the angel of death was going to visit Egypt but whatever doorpost that the blood was seen, death would pass such a household over. True to God’s word, the following morning, there was weeping and wailing in the household of the Egyptians over the loss of their first born children but the household of the Israelites was spared because of the blood of the lamb (Exodus 12:30).

It is illogical to assume that ‘ordinary blood’ can wade off the angel of death but Paul told the Corinthians that “God uses the foolish things of this world to confound the wise” (1Cor. 1:27). The things that are seemingly useless with human beings are very useful tools in God’s hands. When Samson was to face the Phillistines, he used the ‘ordinary jawbone of an ass’ to slaughter thousands of men (Judges 15:15-17). When the Midianites and Amalekites that “lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude” waged war against Israel, Gideon was asked to use an army of 300 men as against 32,000 that volunteered and they defeated the huge army (Judges 7:1-12).

Not only that, with ‘ordinary songs and praises’ Judah destroyed the armies of the Ammonites, Edomites and Moabites (2 Chronicles 20). When the axe-head was lost by the sons of the prophet to River Jordan, an ordinary stick was thrown into the river by the man of God which prompted the axe-head to jump up from the belly of the river while the stick sank (2 Kings 6:1-7). It was also an ‘ordinary stone’ in the hand of David that destroyed the intimidating Goliath (1 Samuel 17:49). With God, nothing and nobody is useless!

It is by this same token that God holds the matter of blood very dearly. When Cain killed his brother, God told him that “the blood of your brother is crying from the ground” (Genesis 4:9-10). In Leviticus 17:11, He explained it further that “the life of the flesh is in the blood”. This is the foundation of the Holy Communion which Jesus Christ gave to His disciples as a memorial that must be duly observed in remembrance of Him (Luke 22:19). The blood of Jesus Christ might look ordinary to unbelievers but the blood of the lamb that was slain has potency above the blood of bulls and goats for cleansing from sin and protection in times of evil ( Hebrews 9:13-15).

In the new testament, and on a day like this (Maundy Thursday), Jesus Christ instituted the Holy Eucharist (Matthew 26:26-28) and He enjoined that the Holy Communion must be done in His remembrance (Luke 22:19). The Holy Communion, apart from having power to protect from the hands of the angels of death, it also enlightens one’s eyes of understanding, provides insight and gives direction (Ephesians 1:18 cf Luke 24:30-35). When God opened the eyes of Hagar and she saw the well, she was saved along with her son from death (Gen. 21:14-19). Not only that, the Holy Communion opens the window of divine favour, grace and unmerited blessings ((cf Acts 2:46-47). Lastly, the Holy Communion facilitates long life, good health and showers of blessings (1 Corinthians 11:29-30).

To enable you get maximum advantage of the Holy Communion, it is important to first examine yourself (I Corinthians 11:27-28, 11:18, 21-22). You must also surrender your life to Jesus Christ and endeavour to live a holy life henceforth. As a follow up to that, the Holy Communion must be taken reverently, not with disrespect to the poor and needy, and must not be taken with unbelief. As you partake of the Holy Communion, may God protect your family members from the devil’s onslaught, incapacitate powers of wickedness in our land, bless our dear country and give us a new dawn of economic revival, security across the length and breadth of the land, improved infrastructure, honesty among our leaders, selflessness in high places and prosperity, in Jesus’ name

Prayer: Father, let the blood of Jesus release unto us a new dawn as individuals and a nation, in Jesus’ name.

  • Dakkada: Akwa Ibom’s change communication theme

Dakkada: Akwa Ibom’s change communication theme

With teasers running in traditional and social media days before its launch in September 23, many were oblivious of what Dakkada was all about. Akwa Ibom State Governor Emmanuel Udom, the architect of the new campaign, says it is a communication strategy that will spur his people to “Rise Up” and achieve greatness, ADEDEJI ADEMIGBUJI writes.

It is one of the most compelling change communications strategies by any state in recent times. Marking the 28th anniversary of its creation, Akwa Ibom State appears to have found a new voice for its people and it is inspiring new hope. For a state whose citizens are stereotyped as ‘house-helps’, or at best ‘great cooks’, the campaign initiated by Governor Emmanuel Udom and tagged Dakkada meaning ‘Rise Up’, is expected to change the narrative for the state and its people.

In one of the Dakkada social media campaigns, monitored by The Nation via YouTube, Udom affirms the new strategic direction and attitudinal change among Akwa Ibomites across socio-economic strata.  Titled: ‘Dàkkádà – Rise to the Faith of Greatness,’ the 1:03 seconds ad reveals a sky reflecting nightfall. Then came the governor, Udom. Decked in a typical Southsouth traditional suit and cap, he calls on the citizens: “Akwa Ibomites, rise to the faith of greatness.”  To enhance recall of the call to action, he says again, “Rise to the faith of greatness that with God all things are possible.”

The next scenes show young people, technicians at work, fishermen casting a net from the canoe, professionals in the office environment working with zeal, the elders drinking palm wine, with the governor’s voice over saying: “Rise to the faith that as people, we can move beyond biases, ethnicity, religion and gender.”

As his voice ran throughout the commercial, charging the citizens, he says: “Rise to togetherness, rise to chart a new course for us, our children and a generation of Akwa Ibomites unborn, hold fast the confession of hope, without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.” Displaying various actualities to communicate every line of the message, Udom showed passion about the rebirth of his people. The commercial, one of many produced, set the emotion, motivational tone with a strong leaning to the Bible.

Also, some of the print ad copies monitored by The Nation explore endorsement of the campaign by citizens of the state who are doing great exploits in every sphere of life, adopted as models for the target of the campaign.

The use of a palm in the entire communication materials symbolises the map of the state. But beyond the sloganeering, Udom while unveiling the campaign during the 28th anniversary of the state on September 23, said: “If we were to situate this moment in the context of the Bible, it would be that we have crossed River Jordan. Behind us is the wilderness and before us is the Promised Land. We can look back and remember our exodus from Cross River State, when God granted our wish 28 years ago, with the creation of this state that is appropriately named after Him. We can remember the years we toiled in the wilderness as house helps and servants in the nooks and crannies of our nation. Yes, we can still remember the days we wallowed in under-development and scorn as we struggled to find our feet and catch up with the other states in our country,” he said.

    The Dakkada creed

He said the power behind the campaign is for people to change their mindset, despite militating factors.

“But the greatest development is in the mind. Let every Akwa Ibom son and daughter know that no matter the circumstances they find themselves, they can rise and shine like a million stars. Let us rise to illuminate our world with our God-given talents and potentials. It is a product of the mind. If you can dream it, you can make it. But the demand of today, which has brought us together to launch this Dakkada campaign, is that we must rise up as a people, take the ark of faith and go around the walls so that they will tumble down like the walls of Jericho. That is the power behind the Dakkada campaign,” he affirmed.

After the campaign launch, many are supporting the new journey, showing optimism in various write ups and sharing them online. One of such is Ezekiel Nya-Etok, the chairman, Social Advocacy Group, and a former governorship aspirant.

He said: “On the 23rd of September, the state governor launched the Dakkada campaign. For me, it is about the most progressive action that any governor has so far taken. It is a campaign or crusade that I had wished was national.

Dakkada is an Ibibio word that simply means ARISE! On the surface, one might be too carried away by the challenges of the moment, but upon closer reflection, it is the call to the inner man to look beyond the challenges of the moment. It is the inspiration to call on the deep, to reach down to the inner strength, to reflect and refocus, to see beyond the physical, the ordinary, and the mundane. It is the X-Factor the defines the super- and the extra- in the natural and the ordinary.

“It is the last strength that makes the difference between giving up, and crossing the finish line. It makes the man that was down to rise and the man that contemplated giving up to change his mind, and the man of excuses, to alter his confession. It is the stuff from which achievers are made, who will not give in to the challenges of the moment, but forge a new vision, a new paradigm, a new perspective, and a new motivation,” he said.

Also, Mr. Ufot Udeme, Group Managing Director of SO & U Group, a marketing communication outfit, said: “The issue also tells us that Akwa-Ibom also parades distinguish personalities who have contributed their to the growth and development of Nigeria. When we look back at people, such as the late Dr. Clement Nyong Isong, who was a banker, politician, governor of Cross River State (1979–1983) and Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria between 1967 and 1975, he happened to be one of the most successful CBN governors in history. He successfully managed the country’s finances throughout the civil war.

“We didn’t borrow any money from any foreign institutions. We look at people such as Sir Egbert Udo Udoma, a lawyer and justice of the Nigerian Supreme Court. He was Chief Justice of Uganda from 1963 to 1969. He spent 13 years as a judge on the Supreme Court of Nigeria and was chairman of the Constituent Assembly from 1977 to 1978. We have so many others. So, they came to the conclusion that in fact our young people do not have fact to understanding our history as a people; and even the right values had not been what it should be,” he said.

While the campaign explores faces of successful indigenes of the state in various communication materials, Udom, however, said it’s is the time to obey the Biblical injunction and wake up the mighty men and beat the pruning hooks into spears. “Now is the time to let our nation see our ingenuity. Now is the time for creativity and innovation in our land to manifest. Now is the time to wake up the mighty men and women so that our nation will know that we are a great people and a blessed generation,” he said.

Meanwhile, with the campaign, Udom believes that having a slogan is not enough to change people’s mindset. He said it must be backed by commitment of government to state development and industrialisation.

“On May 29, 2015, you graciously extended to me the mandate to be your governor. In the execution of this sacred trust as your governor and in observance of the oath I took before our God and our good people, we have spared no efforts in keeping faith with that covenant. During my electioneering campaign, I had laid out a bold plan in my five-point agenda of wealth creation, economic and political inclusion, poverty alleviation, infrastruc-tural consolidation and expansion and job creation. So far, we have kept our eyes on the ball, and this is evident through the numerous projects undertaken by this administration. We have so far undertaken the construction of 137 kilometers of road with 10 bridges spanning all the three Senatorial Districts. We have pursued the construction and completion of a second runway at the Ibom International Airport and a 1.2km underground drainage in Uyo by Nsikak Eduok/Oron road junction,” he noted.
