    BBNaija: Entertainment returns to television

There are times that one needs a break from scripted entertainment, and enjoy the veracity and piquancy that come with impulsive shows. Such times are when the beauty of reality television comes to play.

How I love reality shows – especially the competition/elimination subgenre like the Big Brother Naija (BBN) which will hit our airwaves again tomorrow.

As a fan, I look forward to another season of confining young men and women in a house where, for three months, a potpourri of activities, including talents, competitions, intelligence quotient, human relations, personal upbringing, sense of tolerance, endurance, leadership ability, sexual disposition, and sportsmanship, among other virtues will not only educate viewers, but provide the sort of entertainment that evokes intellectual discuss.

One of the dynamism of the Big Brother show is such that not only are the actors under wraps before the opening show, it portrays so much dramatic irony in such a way that housemates, however close, are still strangers to themselves. The viewers know best, the true disposition of one housemate to another, only next to the show captain called Big Brother.

Last year, Bisola needed to be out of the house to discover that ThinTallTony, with whom she was romantically hooked to, was married with kids. Just as all other housemates eventually found out about the many lies told by Gifty.

Beyond the romance therein, the show, right from 2006 when the first edition staged its Nigerian version; young Nigerians have entertained us with their different personalities and unique talent.

To underscore the huge followership of the show, the prize money which is usually accompanied by an SUV, has moved from $100,000 won by Katung Aduwak, N25million won by Efe Ejeba, and now N45million for the eventual winner of this year’s edition.

Every week, fans look forward to the diary sessions where housemates get personal with Biggie. This is followed by housemates nominating themselves for possible eviction. Here, trust is sometimes put to shame, as your supposed friend could put you up if they find you are a threat to their next step up the ladder. And when it so happens that the fans favourite housemate is being so victimised, the outside world engages its arsenal in multiple rounds of public voting. Last year, we heard of how an entire clan voted their own, with political leaders getting in the ‘fray’. Such is how all-engaging the Big Brother format can be.

Interestingly too, I have two ‘pastor’ friends who, for the first time, didn’t only see the need to follow the show, they had favourites housemates for whom they staked their money. In Big Brother show, there is obviously something for everyone. And like they say, ‘you see what you want to see.’

And as the show is being recorded in Johannesburg, South Africa, the organisers, I believe will, beyond this business decision, make it nothing short of a Nigerian show.

Last year, several indications pointed to the fact that it was our show: the twelve housemates that eventually became 14, were all Nigerians selected from the six geo-political zones; the popular Big Brother Voice was that of a Nigerian; series Director, Gbenga Kayode is a Nigerian and Nigeria-trained; head of content and about nine other members of his team were Nigerians; the title sponsor, Payporte, which returns this year again is a Nigerian online retail company; foods, drinks, fabrics, decors, props were largely from Nigeria; English, pidgin, and other Nigerian languages were permitted on the show; Nigeria’s major language interpreters were engaged on the show, and of course, the prize money of 25 million was in Naira.

I have a date with tomorrow. Ahead of which I’m thinking; who will that wow factor be – a popular celebrity perhaps – that will ignite the first news mention and send the media on a ‘viral’ errand. I can’t wait!

  • BBNaija’s ThinTallTony set to hold dance concert

BBNaija’s ThinTallTony set to hold dance concert

Former Big Brother Nigeria housemate, Anthony Effiong, popularly known as ThinTallTony says he is set to host a dance concert aimed at promoting the growth of dance.

Effiong made this known in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday.

He said that the concert, which is aimed at contributing to the growth of dance as a profession would hold on Oct. 8.

He said that the project was one of the few he had embarked on since he left the reality show, adding that he had also featured in a few movie productions.

Effiong, who recently starred in the movie ‘Celebrity Marriage’ alongside Tonto Dikeh and Jackie Appiah is also shooting two short films.

The dancer decried the way at which dancers in the country were relegated to the background.

“They are only used for music videos to dance; but as a profession it has not been fully embraced in Nigeria unlike other forms of entertainment.

“Musicians need dance to make their shows interesting, they need dancers also in their videos but we have been relegated so much to that role alone.

“We have not been given much recognition and are usually restricted to music videos and as backup dancers for musicians which is not done in other countries.

“This is because people tend to forget that dance is a genre on its own. We have a couple of dance concerts in Nigeria but they are not mainly about dance,’’ he said.

Effiong said he studied dance in Vienna, Austria through a UNESCO scholarship in 2005 and he had not been able to express his full potential, hence the need for the concert.

He said that although he had had two dance productions, he still wanted to do more, considering the state of dance in the country.

“I have worked with choreographers who handled Madonna, Christiana Aguilera and others. There are lots of people in my archive.

“Coming back home, I am supposed to dance around a brand and express myself fully as a dancer.

“We want people to be able to see what we can do and commercialise us not just in music videos but as brands just like the actors.

“Dancers need to come out and show people what they can do so the younger ones out there can use that as a platform to ride.

“This is to show that we are not just social dancers and we can as well have a good show that people can pay, sit down and watch,” he said.

NAN reports that ThinTallTony had lots of negative publicity immediately after he left the reality show due to his romantic involvements with fellow housemate Bisola Aiyeola because of his status as a married man.

Effiong said that he did not pay any attention to the negativity as human beings tend to use little negative events to wipe out all the good deeds of a person.
He also expressed his desire to try out reality television shows again, saying he loved healthy competition and was intrigued by the shows.

He advised future housemates to know what they would wanted to use the platform for before going into it.

According him, this will help them properly utilise the fame and not be left clueless when they get it.

BBNaija: Efe receives prize money, SUV

    …As Bisola shuns Tony Offiong

It was a cold reception Bisola Aiyeola gave fellow housemate and ‘lover’, Tony Offiong, aka ThinTallTony when they finally met at a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday, despite their romantic moments together while in the Big Brother House.

Tony, a dancer who was evicted some weeks ago, kept his marital status under wraps throughout his stay on the show, and it was only on the eviction night that Bisola confirmed that he was indeed married.

Organisers of show used the platform of press conference which held at the Wheatbaker Hotel, Ikoyi, Lagos, to present the car prize, a Kia Sorento SUV and a cheque of N25m to Efe Ejeba, winner of the Big Brother Naija reality show.

Some other housemates were also present at the event.

While Bisola, the first runner-up and recently appointed ONE Campaign ambassador, hugged other members like Bassey, Jon, Soma and Gifty, she theatrically greeted Tony without physical contact, unlike the tactile relationship they developed while in the BBN house.

While in South Africa, Bisola was shocked when she noticed that Tony wore a wedding band whereas he never disclosed he was married.

“I hope your family is doing great, well done to you, to them,” she said curtly.

“Feel just betrayed that we were really close, come on, we shared a lot of things together.”

Upon being evicted, Tony, a father of two, had said it was an agreement between him and his wife, Laraba Offiong, not to discuss his marital status on the show.

#BBNaija: I do not need to talk with TTT – Bisola

Bisola Aiyeola, 1st runner up of the Big Brother Naija reality TV show said on Monday that she does not need to talk to ‘ThinTallTony’ Offiong, former housemate and love interest about his marital status.

The newly appointed Ambassador of ONE Campaign for the Girl-Child education said this during a news conference along with winner, Efe Ejeba at The Wheat baker, Lagos.

Bisola who was romantically involved with ThinTallTony while in the BBNaija house, said that she does not see the need to have a conversation with him as to why he hid the fact that he is married with kids from her.

She had earlier addressed the issue during a briefing in South Africa after she (Bisola) shockingly noticed and pointed out the wedding band on TTT’s finger.

Reacting further, she said, “So I just found out that Thin Tall Tony is married, has a family and in my mind I’m like, ‘dude, you are one amazing actor.

“Good thing, I did not have it in my head that I was going to come out and have a sort of romance with you; I hope your wife did not deal with you too much.

“But somehow I feel sort of slightly betrayed that he betrayed that friendship that I thought we had, I thought we could really be close buddies outside of the house.

“So, yes, Tony, I hope your family is doing great, well done to you, to them, feel just a little betrayed that, we were really close, come on, we shared a lot of things together.

“This one thing that you didn’t say, I don’t know why. Anyway, it’s your choice, you played the game the best way you know how to.’’

ThinTallTony who is married with two kids hid his marital status during his stay in the house before he got evicted.

The dancer had earlier stated in an interview that he had an agreement with his wife, Laraba Offiong to keep his family private

#BBNaija: ThinTallTony gets rousing reception in Calabar

Offiong Anthony, popularly known as ThinTallTony, (TTT) who was recently evicted from the on-going Big Brother Naija reality TV show, on Thursday arrived Calabar to a festive welcome by fans and admirers.

TTT, who is a professional dancer, was welcomed by members of Passion 4 Calabar Carnival Band group who dressed in their all black attire, friends and scores of fans.

Speaking to Journalists at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport, Tony described his BBNaija experience as interesting as well as amazing.

“It was a worthwhile experience. Big brother Africa is the only show which I really don’t know what they are looking for every time.

“But each time I go for it, I always pray that, whatever they are looking for, I should have it, ‘’ he said.

He urged young people with passion for showbiz to go for work towards achieving them, adding that the BBNaija as a platform “offers a wide range of opportunities.’’

TTT while in the house was famous for his controversial relationship with Bisola, one of the housemates. (NAN)

  • MY MARRIAGE IS SAFE –BBNaija Evictee ThinTallTony

MY MARRIAGE IS SAFE –BBNaija Evictee ThinTallTony

Big Brother Naija housemate, Tony Offiong, aka ThinTallTony is the latest evictee on the show. In this interview with VICTOR AKANDE, the professional dancer who became controversial for concealing his marital status and claiming is ‘family’ were dead, noted that his denials were all about the game. He also insisted that nothing erotic happened between him and female housemate, Bisola, under the duvet.

HOW do you feel, not winning the N25million prize money?

To be honest I went into the show without the inkling of winning the prize money. To have gotten this far in the game, I wish I had won it. Like I said earlier, I was just looking for an opportunity to show my craft.

What lessons have you learnt about life when you look back and reflect on all that transpired in the BBNaija house?

I would say one word; tolerance. Because of the kind of work that I do; I work with a lot of people, I should be able to manage them and understand where they are coming from. Mine is all about the work, it has to be good. So to tolerate people and know where they are coming from is very important; I learnt that.

What would you do differently, given another opportunity?

Nothing! If I go back into the house, I would play the game same way. I’m sure when I step into the house it would be more problems (Laughs).

Don’t you feel you over-rated yourself by thinking Efe would be evicted when, eventually, he scored the highest number of votes?

The whole truth is that we have no idea what the voting lines are like or how the rates are. We should also not forget that it’s a game and we are friends and we are also not friends, and we are allowed to nominate anybody and I choose to nominate Efe at that time.

Tell us one embarrassing thing that a family member or friend has said to you since you left the house

Since I left the house – to be honest – I have not spoken to anyone apart from my wife and she hasn’t said anything embarrassing yet.

What about one uplifting thing that a family member or friend has said to you since you left the house

One of the comments that I read was that they felt that I played the game the way I should have, and sticking to the whole thing of keeping my marriage private and not allowing anyone know.

How do you feel now, knowing that your strategy of philandering with Bisola and TBoss didn’t work for you?

To correct that, I didn’t play with anyone’s emotion. I tried as much as I can to know who these ladies were. For me, I was more into Bisola based on what I would be able to learn from her as an artiste like myself. I and Tboss had no connection whatsoever because even after the house, we won’t be able to work together; she is on a different level and Bisola is also on a different level that is also my own line. So, I connected only with Bisola.

You were a popular dancer and actor before going into the house, how come a relatively unknown person like Efe was able to beat you to the game?

I wasn’t in there to do any kind of competition with anybody.  My major plan was to go out and remind people who I am and what I can offer. It has nothing to do with competing with anybody. I love my work and I love working hard. So, I had that opportunity to show people what I do and do it well. People voted based on likes but I went in there to show what I can do and that’s all that I did.

People say any man that gets close to TBoss ends up being evicted. Do you think this was the case with you?

I don’t believe that’s what happened in my case. I did talk about it, I said the same thing but maybe she has a strong fan base and more support than anyone that has left so far. The game is still being played and she is still up for nomination this week. So we’ll see what happens.

Do you think that you could have earned more favour from fans if you had told the truth about your marriage?

I respected myself and respected the orders from my wife not to disclose my marital status; to keep my family out of it. Also, while in the house, there’s no lie that I do like Bisola a lot and I could have taken it a step further but remembering what took me into the house in the first place; I could have led her on, could have also gotten to the part where maybe sex would have been involved. Also I tried as much as I can to protect her because I knew where I was coming from and that’s what I did. Let’s not forget that it is a game and we were all playing a game.

Are you having problems with your marriage in any ways?

No, I’m not. (Laughs) My marriage is safe. The only thing that I’m looking forward to is kissing my wife and holding my kids.

How much has Payporte improved your wardrobe?

Payporte is amazing. I got things that would take me months to even get. They have done more than enough. I don’t think I have the right words to appreciate them. But I would say they have done fantastic work for me and every other housemate.

What do you miss most in the house?

I miss the Friday games. I love the games because that’s the only time I tell myself that I’m not competing. I just play the game and also look forward to drinking every Friday evening. I also miss the task process that made us not just get up and do work but to build ideas as individuals or pairs and even as a group and mostly work as a unit; I miss that.

How was the kissing festival for you? Does it make you feel dirty now that you’re outside the house?

Everyone was involved in the kissing festival. At some point I felt people didn’t want to play and a lot of guys to some extent had to stop because we got advice from Biggie and we didn’t want it to look like we were forcing people to do want they didn’t want to do. It doesn’t make anyone feel dirty, we were all involved in it and we all decided that we should end it.

Bisola did give you a ‘head’ in the house, were you really going to lay her when you brought out those condoms on the night before your eviction?

(Laughs)I hear that the rumour is flying; maybe it would take me a long time to try and clear that. Bisola did not give me a head in the house. We were talking under the sheets; we always talk under the sheets. That’s the only time we have our moments together to just talk outside the cameras. That’s also where we talked about laying things straight because even when she had an opportunity to come out openly; if there was anything we would have told Ebuka, we didn’t.

But mostly, a lot of people did hear when she said Tony is a gentleman and Tony did not do things that you probably thought he did. I would wait for her to come out and if she has a different opinion which I do not believe that she will; I know what happened and I can only tell you. You are allowed to believe what you want to believe but nothing did happen.

How has your wife reacted since you left?

My wife has been very supportive and she just wants me to come home but right now, we are doing the interviews and the rest. I should be able to spend that much family quality time with her. We need to sit down and strategize on how to move forward with everything and also try to clear the air. I also don’t want it to look like I’m putting her on the spot but funny enough that’s what comes with new environment that we find ourselves, but she has been very supportive and I am very humble and thankful to have someone as supportive as my wife.

Apart from being a dancer, what are the new things you are inspired to do now to advance your career?

For one, I have always wanted to go into my own clothing line and I have always wanted to have my own production to be able to produce good quality work and also to have my own TV show. There are a whole lot of things that I’ve lined up for myself before I got into the house. Like I said, if I had won the money it would have been a good start. But it doesn’t take me to the part where I say I can’t move on. I am moving on and work has started for me. And yes, these are also the things I have discovered about myself. Also, I want to go back to Radio. I love radio and I would do that as well.

How was it like spending over a month without your phone and social media?

It was difficult for two months actually, without a phone because that’s the only means I use to promote the work that I do before I got into the house. So now, it’s still new to me and I can’t type like I used to. I can’t type fast anymore. I even forgot passwords at some point. It’s still coming; it’s a very slow process.

After losing the prize money, is there a way the game has made you a better person?

To rephrase, I didn’t go in there to win the money. I went in there for the platform, for the opportunity that it would give. If the money had come with it, it’s all well and good. Like I said I had no regrets. It has definitely made me a better person. I know how to co-ordinate myself and take opinions from other people. We were fourteen housemates and most of them were not artistes but every opinion and idea there counts; that means any one can be creative like myself and even much more. It has opened my eyes to see that I can’t be in my creative sector and think that’s the only way I can get ideas. So, yes, it has done a lot for me. It has opened my eyes to see more.

At some point, Big Brother offered you a million naira to walk out of the show. Do you regret not taking the offer?

I know there are no regrets for me refusing the money but the real truth is that I’ve been hustling for the opportunity to have a platform for about 12 years; but a million naira in 12 years? Well, I probably have made a million naira and I did not even know. So, giving me a million naira in one day with the amount of things that I wanted to do would not have worked for me. People would probably say that if I wanted to do something that I’ll kill myself to achieve it, that I’m a die-hard person and would advise that I stay there till the end. That offer would have backfired; that would not have made me a man of my word. It’ll amount to shooting myself in the foot. I didn’t take it, I know I’m not money conscious. I just want to create my own work and my own lane and make myself relevant and impact lives. That’s all I wanted to do. And now, I have the platform, that’s what I’m going to do.

How much of dancing job and acting have you missed so far?

Well, I used the house as a place for me to rest because before I got into the show I had a bad leg. So I used that process to heal and to get myself back to work more. There’s still a lot of work I need to do because I have a dance tour and I need to make that come up as soon as possible. Yes, it would take a lot of hard work to get to the level I was before I got into the house but I’m prepared for it.

How did you come about the name ThinTallTony?

First, I need to give a proper shout-out to Nissy George who was the one that came up with the name ThinTallTony. We were at an event and the M.C was running late and we were talking at the backstage with some friends. I was at the programme to perform as a dancer but we were cracking ourselves up and he said the audiences were waiting and asked if I can work on the stage for about five minutes and I said OK. He asked for my name and I said Tony. He responded that the name won’t sell but I should not worry, that we’ll look for something. I went on stage and I was introduced as an upcoming comedian and he said ”Ladies and gentlemen, please, give it up for ThinTallTony”, and that’s how the name stuck.

    ThinTallTony faces life after BBNaija

BBNaija housemate, ThinTallTony, has returned to the country after Sunday night’s eviction show. Apparently still in shock over his sudden removal from the show, the lanky contestant is being confronted with questions, bothering on his earlier claim that his family members are all dead.
It started with Efe being told to stay back by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, as he was saved from eviction and then the most underrated Debbie-Rise, coming second in the votes ranking.
When the bomb was released, it hit straight into ThinTall Tony’s heart. It was a great shock. His eyes were laced with tears. His female ally, Bisola, cried out loud. Bally looked on with starry eyes.
ThinTallTony now has the outside world to contend with. He had claimed he had nowhere to go to, saying to his fellow housemates that his family was dead, while fans of the show have been campaigning with the hash-tag that he should return to his wife, Laraba, and two children. This was against the backdrop of his flirting with Bisola and TBoss at intervals.
Joining Ebuka on stage, the 5.7ft dancer said: “I’ve waited for 12 years to be here. I lived it to the fullest. I’m living the dream.”
He said it was heartbreaking that he was evicted, but it’s all good.
Playing back his kissing scenes with Bisola, he claimed he was merely acting. “No offense to anybody, but that was not real. I know that I felt something for her. She is an incredible woman. But we spoke about it and took it maturely.”
Asked about his wife and children, who he admitted are real, he said: ‘Like I said in the game, I never spoke about my family. I kept it really separated, I don’t want anyone to know about that part of my life because the truth is, I’ve done research before about people, humans, and how they think, not just in Nigeria but around Africa. When I did that research, I realized there is a way people look at you when you are married, especially in the game, and I’m married. Nobody knows I am.”
However, when told everybody, including his fellow housemates knew he is married, he was alarmed.
According to him, he had tested them by asking them a few questions and they did not respond in a way that suggested they knew he is married.
He said he wasn’t perturbed by people who nominated him, because he had also nominated Bisola, despite their closeness.
He claimed that the aspect of his family that he said was dead were his grannies, brother and sister because he held them in high esteem.
During an eviction diary room session earlier, TBoss had predicted Debie-Rise’s exit, just as Efe noted that her main strength was the guitar, with which she has been constituting nuisance in the house.
Although Debie-Rise was not originally nominated for possible eviction, she was put up by Marvis, who had to use her power card to nominate someone, between Bisola and Debie-Rise. This was just as Head of House, Bassey, used his veto power to save Bally and put up Efe.
Efe took the lead with a wide margin of 51.97 percent, followed by Debie-Rise with 21.78 percent, and TBoss with 14.57 percent while ThinTallTony had 11.68 percent
Reekado Banks opened the show with the medley ‘Oluwa Ni’, followed by ‘Problem’, as he was joined by four female dancers in an applauded performance witnessed by his master and honcho of Mavin Records, Don Jazzy, who was sitting among the live studio crowd.
The second performance was done by DNA Twins, singing “How Can”. When Reekado Banks returned to close the show, he sang “Ladies and Gentlemen”.
The show continued with seven housemates left for the prize of N25 million and a brand new Kia Seranto car.
The next eviction show holds on Sunday, March 26. And viewers in Nigeria are expected to text the word “Vote” followed by their preferred housemate’s name to 32052. While for the rest of Africa, fans are told to follow the AfricaMagictv official account on WeChat and click on the menu option ‘BBNaija’ and select their preferred housemate. Voting will open at 21h00 WAT on Monday, March 20 27 and will close at 20h00 WAT on Saturday, March 26, 2017.

#BBNaija Day 44: Bisola desires romantic task with ThinTallTony

Bisola, one of the housemates in the on-going Big Brother Naija (#BBNaija) reality TV series on Tuesday said she looks forward to a “romantically oriented” task with her fellow housemate ThinTallTony(TTT) .

It would be recalled that the two housemates have been displaying affection for each in the house.

The love birds have also received criticisms from viewers due to their explicit actions in the house.

Bisola said this during her dairy session with “Biggie” owner of the #BBNaija house.

When asked by Biggie “who among the housemates would you want to be tied with in a romantically orientated task,? She responded “Thin Tall Tony.”

Bisola explained that she was comfortable with TTT because he knows how to tolerate her excesses.

“I can be little over bearing sometimes; I can’t play with other housemates the way I play with Tony; with Tony I can have fun.”

Bisola and TTT’s closeness keeps growing by the day.

Bisola who also spoke on Kemen’s disqualification from the show last Sunday expressed regrets for some unprintable comments she made about Tboss.

She said her comments were based on what Kemen told the housemates

” I said some unprintable worlds about her, but when she called me aside and told me what went down, I was like yooo!.

“I felt really bad; I miss Kemen, I admired his drive, focus and the fact that he loves to help other youths.

“But on what he did; even if Tboss didn’t say anything or didn’t know what happened, as long as Big Brother saw it, it was enough for Big Brother to disqualified him.

“It was really bad, I was disappointed in Kemen for what he did; I didn’t know what pushed him, but I do miss him though,” Bisola said.

The housemate also said, she hoped the disqualification would not hinder him and his future plans.

She also apologised to Tboss adding, “I like her, but just that sometimes she over does certain things in the house.

“And me, I have a big mouth and will just talk about it, but she thinks I don’t like her,” Bisola said.

On Uriel’s eviction, Bisola said it was shocking because she did not think Uriel was going to leave.

According to her Uriel, who was evicted last Sunday, was the house favorite and always lending helping hands to other housemates when there was a need.

Earlier, Biggie who was in a prankful mood ordered the housemates to freeze while some Ninja’s sprayed whipped cream all over their bodies.

  • #BBNaija Day 43: ThinTallTony retains Head of House

ThinTallTony has retained his head of house title in the on-going Big Brother (#BBNaija) reality TV series for second time in a row, after winning Monday’s task by picking the golden egg.

Just off his regime last week, Thin tall Tony has once again won the head of house challenge.

It was a game where housemates had to find a golden egg and break the ones that weren’t golden on their heads.
After a few rounds of breaking eggs on their heads TTT found the golden one and as such became the head of house once again.

As there is no eviction this week the advantages of swap and replace or immunity are not to be utilised.
TTT had escaped nominations after he won the title during last Monday’s task of bursting balloons.

Nigerians who have been waiting for an opportunity to vote the housemate out are quite disappointed as he seems determined to win more tasks and remain in the house.

TTT had come under serious criticism for denying his family when Bisola one of the housemates he is romantically involved with inquired about his marital status.

His response “I am single by God’s grace’’ did not go down well among most viewers who felt that nothing is worth denying one’s family for.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that being the head of the house provided immunity from being nominated for eviction from the show.

Meanwhile, there will be no eviction next Sunday as announced by the host of the show Ebuka Obi –Uchendu on Sunday.

This comes after the eviction and disqualification two housemates from the #BBNaija house.

Kemen was disqualified on grounds of sexual misconduct while Uriel was evicted for having the second lowest votes after Kemen.

The winner of the reality show will leave the house with N25 million and a brand new Kia Sorento (NAN)
