    One dead, eight injured in accident on Third Mainland Bridge

    One person died on the spot while eight others sustained injuries in a head-on collision involving two Mazda commercial buses with registration numbers LND 624 YE and EKY 804 YH, on the Third Mainland Bridge, inward Iyana-Oworonshoki, Lagos.

    In a statement, the Director Public Affairs, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr Taofeeq Adebayo, stated that the drivers of the buses were on top speed from Adeniji Adele.

    LASTMA, he further said, facilitated the rescue of the passengers, who suffered severe fractures. They were taken to the Gbagada General Hospital for medical Care by the Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS).

    Police units from Bariga and Alonge were instrumental in providing critical security support during the rescue, ensuring order and expediting the efforts to restore normalcy.

    Adebayo reiterated that LASTMA is committed to safer roads.He implored motorists to observe speed regulations and exercise caution.

    Also, another accident involving a Honda CRV (AKD 743 HV), which overturned, was recorded yesterday on the bridge near the UNILAG Waterfront, in-bound Iyana-Oworonsoki. The crash was attributed to excessive speeding, resulted in no casualties.

    Man arrested for vandalizing aluminum railings on Third Mainland Bridge

    A 28-year-old man, Yakubu Yusuf, was arrested early Monday morning for allegedly vandalising aluminum railings on a bridge near the Old School of Nursing, heading toward the Third Mainland Bridge.

    Officers from the Onikan Police Division apprehended the suspect.

    It was gathered that around 6:42 a.m., the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Onikan received a tip-off about a group vandalizing the bridge’s railings.

    Acting on the information, the DPO swiftly led the division’s anti-crime patrol team to the scene.

    Yusuf was arrested at the site, and 21 long pieces of aluminum railings were recovered.

    However, other suspects managed to flee before police could catch them.

    The Lagos police command confirmed that an investigation is underway to capture the remaining suspects and reassured the public of their commitment to safeguarding public infrastructure and ensuring security.

    A fatal collision on Lagos Third Mainland Bridge has resulted in one death and left eight others critically injured.

    The accident occurred near the Ilaje area, involving two Mazda commercial buses with registration numbers (LND 624 YE) and (EKY 804 YH).

    The buses, reportedly engaged in a high-speed chase, collided head-on, causing severe damage.

    Eyewitnesses indicated that reckless driving was a factor, as both buses had been speeding from the Adeniji Adele axis towards Iyana-Oworonsoki before the crash.

    It was gathered that emergency services from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) arrived promptly, rescuing the eight injured passengers, who sustained serious fractures.

    They were transported to Gbagada General Hospital by Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) for urgent medical care.

    Police from the Bariga and Alonge stations secured the scene to facilitate rescue operations.

    LASTMA expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and reiterated its commitment to road safety, urging drivers to adhere to speed limits and drive cautiously to prevent such tragedies.

    Earlier in the day, a separate accident involving a Honda CRV (AKD 743 HV) occurred on the same bridge near the Unilag waterfront.

    The vehicle overturned due to excessive speeding, but there were no casualties.

    LASTMA swiftly cleared the wreckage, minimizing traffic disruption.

    LASTMA Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, emphasised the agency’s commitment to enhancing road safety and urged stricter compliance with traffic regulations to reduce accidents.

    Blind man, two children rescued from suicide on Third Mainland Bridge

    A 65-year-old blind man and his two children have been rescued from an attempted suicide on the Third Mainland Bridge.

    The man, identified as Ewenla Ibrahim Adetomiwa, tried to jump into the lagoon with his children – a 16-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy.

    The incident occurred at 2:30 pm, last Wednesday, drawing the attention of concerned citizens who intervened and alerted the police.

     Upon receiving the distress call, officers promptly arrived at the scene, where they found Adetomiwa and his children amidst a crowd of onlookers and motorists.

    During initial questioning, Adetomiwa confessed that his intention was to end his life, hoping that the government would take responsibility for his children if he succeeded.

     The family was safely escorted to the police station for further assistance.

    The police are working to contact Adetomiwa’s wife and investigating the circumstances leading to the incident.

    Also, a young man identified as Elijah, aged 18, was rescued last night by a routine anti-crime patrol as he attempted to jump into the lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos.

    The incident occurred around 8:10 pm, when the patrol team on their regular duty, noticed Elijah standing dangerously close to the edge of the bridge.

    Acting quickly, the officers intervened and prevented what could have been a tragic incident.

    Elijah, who resides at 104 Estate, Victoria Island, was identified as mentally unstable.

    After being brought to the station, the police contacted his family. His brother arrived shortly after and Elijah was released into his care for necessary medical treatment.

    Early morning accident on Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos, has claimed one life.

    However, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), was able to rescue one of the victims who were involved in the crash.

     The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, confirmed the incident, detailing that the accident occurred near the Unilag waterfront, in the direction of Iyana-Oworonsoki. The vehicles involved were identified as a Mini Truck (MUS 489 XS) and a Toyota Camry (KRD 470 JD).

    Preliminary investigations attributed the cause of the accident to excessive speeding amid heavy rainfall. Despite ongoing efforts by the government to enforce speed limits, motorists continue to violate the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law of 2018, according to Hon. Giwa.

     “The fatal accident this morning underscores the critical need for drivers to adhere to speed limits, particularly during adverse weather conditions,” Giwa stated.

    He emphasized the need for heightened vigilance on the Third Mainland Bridge and other roads across Lagos.

    In the wake of the accident, the deceased was removed by the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), while LASTMA operatives swiftly cleared the vehicles to restore normal traffic flow on the busy bridge.

     Giwa extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and reiterated the government’s commitment to road safety. “We urge all motorists, including commercial bus drivers, to exercise caution and avoid speeding at all times,” he said.

     Adebayo Taofiq, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, echoed these sentiments, calling for increased compliance with traffic regulations to prevent future tragedies.

    One person was confirmed dead in an accident that occurred on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on Saturday morning.

    The fatal accident involved a Mini Truck (MUS 489 XS) and a Toyota Camry (KRD 470 JD).

    “Preliminary investigations revealed that the accident was caused by excessive speeding during a heavy downpour this morning,” the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said in a statement.

    The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, in the statement signed by Mr Adebayo Taofiq, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA, said that three others were rescued at the accident scene.

    He said that operatives of LASTMA responded swiftly to the accident, which occured near the Unilag waterfront, heading towards the Iyana-Oworonsoki area of Lagos.

    Giwa said that despite the government’s ongoing campaign to educate motorists about speed limits, drivers continued to flout the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

    He urged both commercial bus drivers and private car owners to avoid exceeding speed limits on the Third Mainland Bridge and other roads throughout the state.

    Giwa said that the deceased was promptly removed by State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) officials, while LASTMA cleared the accident vehicles to ensure smooth traffic flow on the bridge.

    He extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and emphasised the importance of road safety.

    Relief as Third Mainland Bridge is reopened

    There was relief yesterday following the reopening of  the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos. The remaining works such as solar light installation and CCTV installations, according to Works Minister Dave Umawould continue.

    Umahi also instructed that the  works should not disrupt the flow of traffic.

    The minister said the brick deck work would be completed next month and would be inaugurated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

    The bridge was partially closed to traffic a few weeks ago to allow for comprehensive repair,  with lane markings, new streetlights and CCTV installed.

    Represented by the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, Olukorede Kesha, the minister hailed Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his assistance in the management of traffic during the rehabilitation.

    He thanked Nigerians for their cooperation, which, according to him, assisted in rehabilitating the bridge.

    Umahi expressed indebtedness to workers of the Federal Ministry of Works, especially the Director of Bridge Rehabilitation, Director Southwest and Federal Controller of Works Lagos, for their commitments in the success of the rehabilitation.

    He said the ongoing under deck and underwater works would not disrupt traffic flow and would strengthen the integrity of the bridge when completed.

    The Federal Controller thanked President Tinubu for his commitment to infrastructural development.

    “He’s not just committed to providing infrastructure, he’s also committed to providing indelible ones that will remain in the minds of Nigerians even years after he has left office.

    ‘Without his commitments, this project would not have become a reality. Without his support, he has supported the ministry all the way. It has never been done like this,” she said.

    She added: “Most of the time, what we have is release of money in an epileptic manner. But this one, the release of funds was done 100 per cent. He was committed to the rehabilitation of the bridge without minding the cost. He had the money and he was willing to spend it.”

    Lagos State Commissioner for Transport, Osiyemi Seun, said: “Maintenance in this place will be categorised into two, maintenance of infrastructure, and also maintenance of safety as regards vandalism.”

    LASTMA warns motorists on speed limit on renovated Third Mainland Bridge

    The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has warned motorists to maintain speed limit while driving on the long stretch of the newly-renovated Third Mainland Bridge.

    The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, gave the warning in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos, signed by Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA, Mr Adebayo Taofiq.

    According to Bakare-Oki, the comprehensively-repaired bridge is scintillating and fascinating to drive on without any impediment.

    He said that this might be too tempting and risky not to observe speed limit, thereby resulting in untoward consequences for motorists.

    “The government has installed state-of-the-art facilities that will aid motorists in navigating the entire bridge to their various destinations within a reasonable travel time,” he said.

    The general manager urged motorists to obey every traffic sign and other installed traffic-related electronic devices where necessary and keep to the approved speed limit.

    “Motorists must be conscious of time and plan their journey ahead to avoid unnecessary speeding while using the bridge and any other link roads across the state,” Bakare-Oki said.

    He assured the motoring public that the agency would deploy more men, patrol and recovery vehicles to ensure safety of motorists and timely rescue intervention on the bridge.

    Bakare-Oki, however, cautioned owners and drivers of vehicles to ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before plying the bridge as the agency would frown at any avoidable obstacle capable of hindering vehicular movements on the flyover.

    The LASTMA boss addressed officers of the agency whose purview fell within the Third Mainland Bridge operational areas.

    The Federal Government is set to reopen the bridge for traffic on April 4.
