The People’s Elephant rose to second on the league table with 18 points from 10 matches after they defeated El Kanemi Warriors 3-1 at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba yesterday in a Glo Premier League Week 10 tie.

  • International friendly: Eagles thrash Yemen 2-0

International friendly: Eagles thrash Yemen 2-0

Mfon Udoh and Azubuike Egwuekwe were on target as Nigeria claimed a 2-0 friendly victory over Yemen at the Sevens Stadium in Dubai.

The Super Eagles were initially scheduled to play Sudan before the country pulled out on Tuesday due to unforeseen reasons.

Ranked 176 against Nigeria’s 43 in the FIFA monthly rankings,Yemen bowed to the superior powers of the three-time African Champions.

The Nigerian side threw everything at the Asians in the international friendly match and went into the recess with a well deserved lead.

Yemen failed to keep possession and were camped in front of their 18-yard box with little sign of putting the Nigerians under pressure.

Nigeria enjoyed the lion-share of possession but could not make their territorial superiority count in the opening exchanges.

Mfon, who netted 23 goals in the 2013/14 Nigeria Professional Football League season stunned Yemen in the 25th minute with the only goal of the first half.

Stand-in coach Daniel Amokachi, who made some changes to the team that fell one-nil to Cote D’Ivoire, made his intention clear to Yemen with an all out attacking system.

The first half ended one-nil in favour of Nigeria.

Both nations looked strong at the start of the second half, but as the match wore on the Eagles were back to their peak and took a two-goal cushion.

A fine strike from in-demand central defender Egwuekwe in the 64th minute ensured that the Eagles ended the tour on a high note.

    Eaglets thrash Congo DRC 4-0

Nigeria’s Under 17 team, Golden Eaglets, are through to the final qualifying round of the 2015 African Championship to be hosted in Niger after a 5-0 aggregate win against Les Leopards of Congo Democratic Republic.

Leading 1-0 from the first leg second round match played in Kinshasa last weekend, the Golden Eaglets confirmed their superiority yet again with a 3-0 win at the M.K.O. Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta on Sunday, in front of appreciative home fans.

There were first half goals for Suleiman Abdullahi, Victor Osimhen while Kehinde Ayinde and Samuel Chukwueze added the other two in the second half.

In attendance to watch the second leg encounter was Ogun State’s First Lady, Mrs. Olufunso Ibikunle who stood in for His Excellency, Senator Ibikunle Amosun as  the Special Guest of Honour; Dr. Lanre Tejuoso (The state’s Commissioner for Youth & Sport; Mike Umeh, the NFF’s Acting President and his 1st Vice, Dr. Shehu Adamu amongst other dignitaries.

The Golden Eaglets dominated the game right from the outset with some good positional play but failed to convert early chances.

But on the dot of 30 minutes, Suleiman Abdullahi scrambled the ball into the net for the first goal after the Congolese goalkeeper, Sese Bia Israel, failed to clear a ball dropped in by Kingsley Michael.

Michael nearly added the second goal five minutes later when his long-range shot was parried away by Israel. From then on, the Golden Eaglets mounted pressure, forcing the Congolese to concede a corner in the 42nd minute. Suleiman took the resultant free kick and Victor Osimhen nodded into the net after Israel failed to hold on to the ball.

At the restart, the Congolese nearly pulled a goal back in the 47th minute but Djemes Diala’s angular shot was caught by goalkeeper Akpan Udoh. Udoh was also at his best a few minutes later when he touched away Mutatu Mbedi’s well struck free kick.

Amuneke pulled out injured Chinedu Ndu for Samuel Chukwueze and it was the gifted striker that provided for Kehinde Ayinde to bury the ball beyond Israel for the third goal in the 67th minute.

The last moment was very dramatic as Abdullahi saw his ball hit the goal post after the goalkeeper had been well displaced  by Chukwueze in the 89th minute. But Chukwueze still had the final word when he drove the ball into the net with almost the last kick of the match.

The Golden Eaglets will now meet Gabon in the third and final round for a place in the next African U-17 Championship after the latter eliminated Ethiopia on a 3-0 aggregate on Saturday.

    Rangers thrash Police Machines 3-0

Rangers international FC of Enugu on Friday thrashed the Police Machines FC, also of Enugu 3-0 in a warm-up match played in the coal city.

The match, which was the third between the two sides as they prepare for the 2013/2014 football season, started on a fast tempo with the police team calling the Rangers goalkeeper into action in the first minute.

Chisom Egbuchulam, however, gave Rangers the lead in the 40th minute to end the half 1-0 in their favour. Abubakar Umar and Meshack Chukwubuike put the game beyond the police team in the 50th and 77th minutes.

The climax of the match came in the 86th minute when Rangers’ Christian Obiozor was given a matching order for brushing an opponent aside. Obiozor was the player who scored the only goal of the home-based Eagles’ victory against Zimbabwe in the recently concluded CHAN in South Africa.

Rangers midfield marshal, Bitrus Dada, said the club had been having the upper hand against the Police Machines.

“This is the third time we would beat them in a warm-up match for the new season. It has been a routine act, had it been they beat us or even a draw would have dented our reputation against them,” Dada said.
