  • Three arrested for ‘illegally’ collecting revenue on Christmas day

    Three persons have been arrested for alleged illegal collection of revenue on Christmas day.

    Commercial drivers had complained that they were beaten up and forced to pay money on a day declared as public holiday when government officials were not on duty.

    The three persons were said to have been collecting money from commercial drivers at Obakhavbaye Central Park.

    Senior Special Assistant to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Security and Surveillance Comrade Emmanuel Orukpe, who confirmed the arrest, said the governor ordered the arrest of the syndicate.

    He said Governor Godwin Obaseki was furious when he received report of the activities of the syndicate who were forcefully collecting revenue illegally from commercial drivers at the motor park.

    Orukpe said: “The culprits, led by one Igwe, are being interrogated at the Oba Market Police Station. We are using this medium to warn other groups involved in this act to desist. The government will not hesitate to punish individuals or groups collecting revenues illegally.

    “The state government has continued to receive worrisome reports from Obakhavbaye Motor Park on the activities of touts collecting revenue illegally.

    “We are putting measures in place to check the activities of the touts, especially at Obakhavbaye Motor Park. Governor Obaseki’s stance against touts and illegal revenue collection is clear.”

     

  • Three arrested for attempting to kidnap prof

    Three persons have been arrested in Edo State for attempting to kidnap an Emeritus Professor Joshua UnuiGboje Aiseku.

    Adamu Aminu, 23, Tamuno Diepreye Samuel, 19, and Ovie Raymond, 21, were said to have threatened to kidnap and kill Prof. Aiseku, if he did not pay them the equivalent of N7.5 million.

    The suspects provided a Turkish bank account number 851838335002, with account name, Akunday Aorah, into which their victim was to pay the money.

    Police Commissioner Babatunde Kokumo told reporters the prime suspect, Aminu, was like a son to Aiseku.

    The police chief said Aminu’s father worked as a security man for Aiseku.

    He said Aiseku paid for Aminu’s education and allowed him to live with him.

    The commissioner said Aiseku sent Aminu to another school when he was rusticated from his first school.

    Aminu told reporters they had no intention to kill Aiseku.

    He said he got the two others in River State to provide a Techno phone and the account number where the money would be paid into.

    Ovie, who provided the Turkish account number, said he didn’t know it was to be used to collect ransom payment.

  • Three arrested for robbery

    Niger State Police Command has arrested three suspected robbers, who have been terrorising the people of Wushishi Local Government.

    Spokesman Mohammadu Abubakar said in a statement yesterday in Minna: “We received information that Alhaji Samaila Usman of Zaragi Maito Fulani camp had been attacked by hoodlums armed with cutlasses and a dane gun.

    “They stormed his house and injured him, leading to the removal of his two teeth.

    “The suspects also robbed him of N87, 000, two sets of wrapper and Tecno phone,” Abubakar said.

    He said the command’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad arrested the three suspects, and recovered one single barrel gun and two cutlasses.

    Abubakar said upon interrogation, the suspects confessed to the crime and would be arraigned after investigation.

     

  • Three arrested for hiring babies to beg for alms

    Three women Chinyere Blessing, Mrs. Ifebeche Uguwozor and Miss Chiamaka have been arrested for hiring babies to beg for alms.

    A sum of N120,000 was reportedly found on them.

    The women were allegedly hiring babies from different mothers with one of them carrying them as her triplet.

    It was gathered officials of the Edo State Ministry of Women Affairs, acting on intelligence report, swooped on Blessing who sat with three babies at the popular Ring Road.

    Blessing was said to have confessed that the supposed triplets were of different ages, parents and that they were not her babies.

    She was said to have taken the officials to the hotel where the mothers of the parents lodged.

    The suspects reportedly confessed that it was their third operation in Edo State as they came in from Enugu State.

    They were subsequently arrested.

    Commissioner of Police, Babatunde Kokumo, said he was yet to be briefed on the incident when contacted.

    Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Ms. Magdalene Ohenhen, could not be reached for comments.

     

  • Three arrested for killing Customs officer

    The police in Katsina State have arrested three persons for the alleged murder of two Customs Officers.

    Police spokesman Gambo Isah stated this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday.

    “The Customs officers were Assistant Superintendent of Customs (ASC) Nuruddeen Babandi and Chief Superintendent of Customs (CSC) Maidamma Yabo,” he said.

    According to him, the deceased served under the Federal Operations Department, and were on routine patrol when they were killed.

    “The Command has deployed officers and men to the scene to investigate the matter. A motorcycle and a military belt were recovered from the suspects,” he added.

    The Customs officers were killed at Dogon-Hawa, near Shargalle village in Dutsi Local Government Area on Sunday night.

    The House of Assembly has invited four top government officials in-charge of security matters, to explain the increasing cases of robbery.

  • Three arrested for selling ‘fake’ JAMB forms

    Officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have arrested three persons suspected to be selling fake Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) forms in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State capital.
    They were arrested at Adebayo and Secretariat Road with counterfeit JAMB forms, cell phones and laptops.
    The suspects described themselves as “education consultants”.
    JAMB officials and NSCDC officers went round some cyber cafes, following complaints that some outlets had begun the sale of 2017/2018 matriculation form.
    State JAMB Coordinator Dele Onileowo said the culprits were arrested with 20 bio-data forms bearing the names and logo of the agency with applicants’ passport photos on them.
    Condemning what he called undue extortion of unsuspecting victims, Onileowo pointed out that the sale of JAMB forms was yet to be announced and appealed to parents, guardians and students to be wary of fraudsters.

    N16m scam:Three arrested for impersonating Magu

    The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested three members of a syndicate for allegedly impersonating the commission’s acting Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu.

    The suspects are Anokwuru Miriam Iheoma, Chukwuma Charles Eze and Ogechi Emeka Okwuosa.

    A statement by the Head, Media and Publicity of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said the suspects had allegedly attempted to obtain the sum of N16million from Prince Casmir I. Ajulu, Secretary, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Anambra State.

    The statement said: “According to Ajulu, the suspects allegedly sent a text message to his mobile phone on March 26, 2016, requesting a list of the names of House of Representatives designates who wanted their Certificates of Return for the last election held in the state.

    “The suspects also allegedly sent some text messages to Ajulu, assuring him that Magu had contacted the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmud Yakubu, over the matter.

    “Given Ajulu’s reluctance to meet their demand, the suspects, however, allegedly threatened to ‘‘deal with him’’.

    “The suspects were, however, arrested in a sting operation by operatives of the Commission.”
