  • Three die in Ondo multiple road crashes

    Two bloody road accidents that claimed three lives occurred on Saturday in Akoko area of Ondo state. The first carnage was witnessed along Ugbe-Iboropa road in Akoko Northeast local government when a Mazda car had a head on collision with another vehicle. An unidentified middle aged lady died on the spot. The second road mishap occurred when a car with two young men inside it, rammed into a stationery trailer along Victory College road, Ikare. Eyewitness said the two occupants of the vehicle also died.

    Confirming the incidents, the Unit Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Ikare-Akoko, Yinka Akande, said his men went to the two scenes for rescue operations. The Divisional Police Officer for Ikare, Olu Agboola, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), also confirmed the two road mishaps. He described the incidents as most regrettable, saying the Police were carrying out investigation to unravel the cause of the auto crashes.

    Three persons have died in four accidents on Christmas Day in Ogun State.

    Twenty-two others were injured and hospitalised.

    The state’s Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Clement Oladele, announced these in a statement by the state’s Route Commander of FRSC Enlightenment Education Unit, Florence Okpe.

    The sector commander urged motorists to drive cautiously, observe the FRSC’s ‘ember months safety campaigns of driving and safe arrival this season as well as use their day-time running lights due to poor visibility that occur on most mornings and evenings.

    He also advised motorists to remember that the areas where diversions were removed on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway remained construction zones.

    Oladele urged the motorists to always maintain the stipulated 50-kilometre per hour maximum speed limit and refrain from overtaking till they are clearly out of construction zones.

    He said: “Four road traffic crashes were recorded in different parts of Ogun State’s highways on Tuesday, December 25.

    “The first crash occurred at 0230hrs (2.30 a.m) on the Benin-Ore Expressway by Omo River at J4, near Ogbere, after Ijebu-Ode. This involved five persons (five male adults). Three persons were injured (three male adults) and two people killed (two male adults).

    “Two vehicles were involved. They are: a Toyota Sienna and a Bed Ford truck with registration numbers AAA113XY and XB538GBD. The injured were conveyed to Roono Hospital in Ijebu-Ode.

    “The second crash occurred at 10.25 hours (10.25 a.m) on the Abeokuta-Sagamu road   around Day Waterman College. It involved 16 persons (10 male adults, six female adults). Sixteen persons were injured (10 male adults, six female adults).

    “Two vehicles were involved: a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number ABG121XA and a Castar pick-up with registration number LSD126XR. No death was recorded. The victims were conveyed to the General Hospital in Abeokuta, the state capital.

    “The third crash occurred at 1035 hours (10.35 a.m) on the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway by Main Gate. It involved two persons (two male adults) and one person was injured (one male adult). One vehicle, a Volvo truck with registration number MEK721XA, was involved.

    “There was no death recorded in the crash. The injured victim was conveyed to Supreme Global Hospital in Sagamu.

    “The fourth crash occurred at 19.20 hours (7.20 p.m) on the international Idiroko-Owode route. It involved three persons (three male adults). Two of them were injured (two male adults) while one person, a male adult, was killed in the crash.

    “Two motorcycles were involved in the crash: one Bajaj motorcycle with registration number EKY465QH and another unregistered motorcycle.  The injured victims were conveyed to the General Hospital in Otta.”

    At least three people yesterday died in an accident and four others were injured when a truck rammed into a commercial bus (Danfo) in Lagos.

    The accident occurred around 3pm at Agunlejika bus stop on the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway.

    It was gathered that the driver of the Danfo with registration number MUS485XW was driving against the traffic when he collided with a truck carrying a container..

    An eyewitness told The Nation that many passengers were injured, while others were trapped under the truck.

    The driver was reportedly speeding and he collided with a truck marked KRD426XL, which was equally on top speed.

    A man, who identified himself as Tunde, said he saw victims trapped under the trailer, adding that some of their legs were cut off.

    “It was a horrible sight. As soon as the accident occurred, the driver of the trailer escaped for fear of being killed,” he said.

    Another man said the accident was between a bus, a truck and a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), who were struggling for right of way.

    “The three vehicles were heading towards Oshodi. They were struggling for space on a road that was very free. “They were trying to overtake one another. The SUV turned to the bus’ direction, the bus turned towards the container, then the container hit the Danfo.

    “The bus somersaulted, which led to the death of the conductor and two others. About four other people sustained injuries.”

    Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and others evacuated the bodies. The injured were taken to the General Hospital, Isolo in an ambulance.

    The Nation learnt that operatives of the  Army, Police and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) assisted LASEMA officials during the rescue.

    Confirming the incident, police spokesman Chike Oti said three people died and five injured.

    He said the accident was caused by over speeding.

  • Three die, five missing in Lagos boat accident

    Three persons were confirmed dead, when a boat carrying 20 passengers capsized between Liverpool and Coconut Under Bridge in Lagos on Wednesday.

    Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) General Manager (GM) Mr. Adesina Tiamiyu said yesterday that rescue team was still searching for the missing passengers.

    The boat en route Ojo from Liverpool capsized around 8.20pm a few minutes after take-off.

    Tiamiyu said: “Twelve of the passengers were rescued by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) officials and local divers.

    “Two men and one woman were confirmed dead. The three bodies have been bagged. They were handed over to the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), to be deposited at the morgue.

    “A female victim, identified as Alhaja, was handed over to her family after documentation by the Marine Police Officers,” he said.

    Two injured

    THREE men were yesterday killed and a woman severely injured after a tanker laden with vegetable oil upturned at Odogunyan, Ikorodu in Lagos State.

    It was gathered that the incident occurred inward Sabo Garage in the early hours shortly after it rained heavily.

    Our correspondent learnt residents had rushed to the scene thinking the fallen tanker was laden with petroleum products.

    They were said to have been scooping the oil when the tanker’s head, which was facing the major road, suddenly turned and crushed the deceased instantly.

    According to a source, a woman and another man were badly injured and were rushed to Ikorodu General Hospital.

    He said: “A tanker that was carrying vegetable oil fell at Odogunyan. Its head was detached from its body but the tanker was still standing.

    “When people saw it, they thought it was carrying fuel or diesel and they rushed it. But they discovered it was vegetable oil and were still scooping when the tanker fell on them.

    “Three men were killed on the spot. A woman’s leg was almost cut. She was in critical condition and another man also sustained serious injuries. They were rushed to the hospital. I do not know their names.”

    Confirming the incident, the General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Adesina Tiamiyu, urged motorists to obey traffic rules and check their vehicles before hitting the road.

    He said aside the Ikorodu accident, the agency’s response averted calamity along CMD Road Magodo after a 45,000 litres tanker laden with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) skidded off the Express and rammed into flowers displayed by horticulturists.

    Tiamiyu said: “Who knows what might have happened if we had not responded early?

    “After pulling off the tanker with the help of the crane, we had to ensure that the gridlock that built as a result of the accident was cleared.

    “Then, the accident at Ikorodu was the second yesterday morning. Our men at Onipanu responded to it and they were able to prevent further damage.

    “They were assisted by LASTMA, NSCDC, soldiers attached to Op MESA, fire service, FRSC, police, LASAMBUS and SEHMU. We also managed traffic, recovered the tanker.”

    Three die in Edo multiple accidents

    Three persons were yesterday confirmed dead in two separate accidents that occurred along the Benin-Lagos highway near the Ovia River.

    In one of the accidents, a tanker truck carrying diesel towards the Ore axis rammed into a stationary truck conveying iron rods and killed the driver on the spot.

    An eye witness said the other accident happened few minutes after the first occurred.

    The witness said a truck attempting to overtake another vehicle had a head on collision with another vehicle and two persons were killed on the spot.

    State Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Samuel Odukoya who confirmed the accident said obstruction on the road caused by the accident has been cleared by officials of the FRSC.

    The accidents have caused traffic gridlock before the arrival of FRSC officials.

    Odukoya blamed the accidents on over-speeding and dangerous overtaking, adding that the corpses have already been taken to the morgue while the injured driver has been taken to an undisclosed hospital for medical treatment.

    Three die in Magadali Boko Haram bomb attack

    Some people are feared dead in a bomb attack on Magadali Local Governmet Area of Adamawa on Monday.

    A source told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the bomb was planted on a road side in the town.

    It added that about three persons lost their lives in the attack.

    Mr Othman Abubakar, the Adamawa Police Command spokesman confirmed the attack but said only one person was killed.

    He said the command was still gathering information for full details.

    Also when contacted, the Executive Secretary, Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), Mr Haruna Furo, confirmed it

    “I received a call from Madagali LGA Council chairman about the incident but due to poor network the conversation cut off.

    “I tried several times to reach him but it failed,” Furo said.

    He said that the agency has yet to get clear details of the attack.

  • Three die, eight injured in Kogi accident

    Three people died yesterday in Lokoja, Kogi State capital, when the driver of a cement-laden articulated truck lost control and ran into a taxi and a commercial tricycle (Keke NAPEP).

    The accident occurred at Nataco Junction on the Abuja-Lokoja Highway.

    Among the deceased were two children. Eight others were injured in the accident, which occurred about  9 am.

    The Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Olusegun Martins, said brake failure caused the crash.

    He added that the trailer was coming from Obajana when the driver lost control of it and hit a tricycle and a taxi at Nataco Junction.

    Martins said a female student of the Kogi State Polytechnic and two others died instantly, adding that eight injured victims were taken to Specialist Hospital, Lokoja.

    Urging the Federal Government to build a flyover at the junction to reduce accidents, he advised drivers to put their vehicles in good condition.

    An eyewitness said the truck driver, who was heading northwards, lost control near the polytechnic gate.

    Students went on the rampage on confirming the death of their colleague.

    They barricaded the highway and made bonfires, causing a gridlock.

    Another eyewitness, Mr. Emmanuel Adams, enjoined the government to stop traders from selling by the roadside, saying there would have been more victims if it was a market day.

    Head of Emergency Unit, Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, Mr. Okpanachi Stephen, confirmed that eight people were brought in from Nataco junction; some with head injuries.

    Stephen said they were responding to treatment, adding that the dead had been taken to the mortuary.

  • Three die in Customs, auto dealers clash in Kwara

    Three persons reportedly died in a clash between men of the Nigeria Custom Service (NCS) and auto dealers in Bode-Saadu, Moro Local Government of Kwara State.
    But the police said only one person died and three others sustained injuries.
    It was gathered the injured are receiving treatment in a private hospital. An eyewitness said the clash caused pandemonium as residents ran to safety.
    It was gathered the auto dealers were coming from Cotonou, Benin Republic, when they ran into an ambush of the NCS.
    The auto dealers sped off to evade arrest and men of the NCS chased after them. An exchange of fire ensued and three persons were hit.
    Police spokesperson Ajayi Okasanmi said the clash happened Monday evening and that only one person died. He, however, said no arrest has been made.

    Three persons were confirmed dead and several homes destroyed at Monday night’s rains in Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital.
    The downpour, which was accompanied by a thunder storm, also destroyed seven telecommunications masts and 25 advertising boards.
    It was Garden City’s first rainfall in the year.
    Some of the telecoms masts and advertising boards fell on homes, destroying goods and property estimated at millions of naira.
    At Nkpolu School in Port Harcourt City Local Government, a telecoms mast fell on a 16-year-old boy, who was reportedly hawking pure water for his mother.
    He was said to have died instantly.
    Two other persons were seriously injured when advertising billboards fell on their homes.
    The victims were rushed to hospital but did not make it. They were confirmed dead yesterday.
    One of the victims, Mr. Ifeanyi Uba, whose shop and goods were destroyed when an advertising billboard fell on it, said two of his workers were injured and almost trapped.
    He said: “I’m hoping that the government will come to our aid. Though I thank God that my workers didn’t die, because when the advertising billboard fell on the roof, it brought down the building. But we were able to bring them out.
    “The rain was violent. It pulled down the advertising structures. This billboard has been here for more than 10 years. I am not asking for compensation but they should rebuild the shop because it will cost me more than N3 million to rebuild and I don’t have that kind of money.”
    Mrs. Marry Ordu lost her three–year-old daughter to a telecoms mast.
    In tears, she urged the owner of the mast to revive her daughter.
