  • Three feared dead as another building collapses in Anambra

AT least three persons were feared dead yesterday in Eziora village, Adazi-Ani in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, when a three storey building collapsed. About others are said to be injured. But police spokesperson in the state, Mr. Uche Ezeh, told reporters yesterday that only one person died during the incident. The owner of the building, one Mr. Uche Okeke, one of the brothers of transport mogul, Chief Godwin Okeke (aka G.U.O), told The Nation that the incident occurred on Thursday. He said the building, which was jointly owned by him and his five other brothers, was at the completion stage when it collapsed. According to him, “It is a sad thing and we are still confused over the incident because we awarded the contract over a year ago to a professional after spending millions of naira on the project for use of quality materials. “Over 20 men were at work when the incident happened. One worker was still trapped and so we immediately ordered for earth-moving equipment from Onitsha to remove the rubbles and to save his life. “By that time, we had reported to the police, who also helped in the rescue mission. But unfortunately, the man under the rubble died before help could come,” he said. The body of the deceased, according to Okeke, had been deposited at the morgue of St. Joseph’s Hospital at Adazi-Nnukwu, near the scene of the incident. One of the labourers, Mr. Olisa Obaze, said he broke his knee cap when he jumped down from the threestorey building. “We were carrying blocks upstairs when we suddenly heard a large cracking sound. We started running for our lives and I had to jump from the three-storey building. After the incident, we started calling on our others and realized that one man was still under the debris,” he said. However, two of the community members close by who spoke with The Nation, said the number of people trapped in the collapsed building had not been confirmed at press time.
