The driver of the bus and a passenger died.

Spokesman for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the accident, attributed it to careless driving.

  • Three injured in gas explosion

    Three injured in gas explosion

Three persons were injured yesterday in a gas explosion at 73 Orile Road, Tabon Tabon, Agege, Lagos.

No less than N150,000, a bag of rice, phones, gas, cylinders, mattress, fan, cloths and other household goods were lost to the inferno, which began around 9:30am and lasted till noon.

The injured – two boys, who came to fill their cylinders in a gas shop and another boy, Chijoke – who works in the gas shop, have been taken to the hospital.

When The Nation visited the house, sympathisers were around to condole with the victims. Many passers-by stopped at the house to find out the cause of the fire, while motorists peeped.

A food vendor, Mrs Kafayat Soliu, whose one room apartment got burnt, said she could not rescue anything from her room.

Mrs Soliu, who was at home when the incident happened, said: “I just finished fetching water and went into my room to change my cloth. I was in the kitchen dishing food when I suddenly heard the sound of a gas cylinder fell and it exploded immediately. I screened ‘my son’, he was in front of my room with another person who carried him and we all ran out of the house.

“Many people were already around the house, the fire had extended to my room, all I have, including my phones, clothes, television, the N100,000 that my husband kept in the wardrobe and the N50,000 I kept in my children’s wardrobe,  a bag of rice, which I bought three days ago and everything inside the room, got burnt. I could not take a single pin out of the room. All we have left is this clothe I am wearing.

“The food, which I sell in front of the house, is also affected. The gas shop was razed.  All the cylinders and everything in the shop got burnt. Both of us could not pick anything. I don’t know where my family and I would sleep tonight; we have no family around to spend the night with. I’m fed up; even my husband who just left here does not know what to do.”

Mrs Soliu appealed to the government for assistance.

“We have nowhere to go to or sleep,” she said.

Another victim, whose roof of her one room apartment also caught fire, Mrs Elizabeth Oke, said she learnt that the boys, who came to fill their gas, must have been using the gas before coming to fill it.

Mrs Oke said: “Their cylinder was hot and it exploded while Chijoke was filling it. The boys should have allowed the cylinders to get cold before coming to fill it.

The gas being filled while it was hot exploded and caught fire. Although we thank God that no life was lost. All our children had gone to school when the incident happened.”

She said the three boys were injured are in the hospital.

She said: “We don’t know if they will survive because I learnt that one of them was seriously burnt. The two boys that came to fill their gas are within age 12, we do not know them because they just came to fill their gas. But Chijoke should be in his late 20’s.

“A neighbour called to inform me. I was at Oshodi, on my way to buy some stuff at Eko market when I got the call and rushed home.

“It was the boys in the area that quenched the fire. We need government intervention because we have nowhere to sleep tonight; as you can see, we are all outside and we have no one to help us.  The fire fighters came here without water.

“They just came here, expecting us to give them money for them to look for water to quench the fire. It was the house next to us that helped us out because they sell water there. The fire fighters came for nothing because they did nothing.  It was police officers that later chased them away since they were not able to do anything. We are not sure of which fire fighters came. Gas shouldn’t be sold at residential buildings. They should be at the filling station and anyone whose wants to fill gas should go and do so at the filling station. They should  stop the landlord from renting the house as  a gas shop because it is dangerous,” she said.

Teenager killed, three injured in crash

A teenage girl was yesterday killed and three others injured in an accident on Ekoro Road near Abule-Egba, Lagos.
The accident, eyewitnesses said, was caused by brake failure.
Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) official said plastics laden trailer rammed into two tricycles and a Tata bus following a brake failure.
“We can’t say whether the girl killed was inside the tricycle or the bus. The girls’ body was immediately taken to the mortuary after she was confirmed dead,” he said.
The trailer, he said, appeared like the ones from neighbouring countries.
“We cannot say which country the driver was coming from but definitely not our country. The driver and the trailer have been taken to Oke-Odo Police Station in Ile-Epo,” he said.
He said LASTMA battled traffic snarl for about five hours while trying to clear the road, adding “it was around 12 noon that we were able to free the road. The traffic stretched back till Ajasa Command and was at standstill at some point. We had to divert traffic to ease our work.”
A traffic warden with Oke-Odo Police Station, Inspector Peter Ajewole, who was at the scene, said an articulated vehicle marked KSF821XM rammed into a tricycle with registration number APP926QD.
“I was controlling traffic here around 6.30 a.m., I saw the truck coming from Abule –Egba on top speed and the driver was unable to control it.
“This may be due to brake failure and it rammed into the tricycle and killed the girl.
“We have called relevant authorities and the family of the victim to inform them about the accident,’’ he said.
Ajewole said the case had been reported to the Divisional Traffic Officer and the truck driver arrested.

  • Three injured in accident

    Three injured in accident

Three people were injured yesterday when the brake of a Toyota Sienna space bus failed at Okunola Bus Stop on Egbeda Road, Lagos.

The occupants, two women and a child, it was learnt, were heading to Ikotun when the accident happened.

The vehicle veered off the road and plunged into drainage.

Passersby and motorists quickly rushed to their aid.

They were taken away by some Good Samaritans.

A trader, Mrs Bola Ogunniyi, said she was attending to a customer when the vehicle veered off the road, adding: “I am glad I didn’t ask my children to attend to the customer if not, the case would have been different. As I was just measuring the litres of oil, the car tumbled off the road and came to a halt in front of me. I was shocked. That moment, I didn’t know what to do. Those who drove were also shocked. I am grateful.”

Another trader, simply called Alhaja, said she was sleeping when she heard a loud noise.

She said:”I really can’t talk because everything is still like a dream. I just don’t know how it happened. The noise woke me.”

A motorcyclist, Muftau Saliu, said it was the third time in three months that such incident would happen, adding: “That part of the road is sloppy and whenever there is an accident, vehicles fall inside the ditch. The ditch has also turned into a refuse dump. I thank God we haven’t recorded any casualty because it would have been worse,” he said.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) officials towed the vehicle away.

LASTMA spokesman, Mahmud Hassan, advised motorists to drive with caution and obey the traffic laws, adding: “Motorists should also make sure their vehicle is in a good state before setting out. They should also plan their journey ahead to avoid overspeeding.”

  • Three injured as fire razes Sara Foam

Three injured as fire razes Sara Foam

Three persons were injured and goods worth billions of naira destroyed yesterday in a fire which razed Sara Foam, a mattress production company on Coscharis Street, Kirikiri, Lagos.

It was gathered that the fire started at 1pm from an air conditioning unit in the finished production store.

Firemen from the State Fire Service, Sara Foam workers and staff of neighbouring companies battled to put it out.

An eyewitness, who gave her name as Rachael, said the fire raged on for four hours.

She said there was a spark from the air conditioning unit in the production store.

“We have been here since morning. We thought it was going to be put out easily till it became serious,” she said.

A resident, who didn’t give his name, said: “This is not the first time this is happening. Residents are scared of living here because of the frequent fires. They should take proper security measures to prevent it. Life is not cheap. The company needs help because it is happening three months after the last incident.”

The company manager, Mohammed Rana, said the fire was caused by an electrical surge.

He said: “It started at 1pm. The goods damaged are close to a billion naira. All the machines and equipment were burnt. The fire fighters came to the scene 30 minutes after they were contacted. Three people were injured and about six sections were affected. I am pleading with the government to help us.”

State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) General Manager, Michael Akindele, said there were no casualties but textile materials, seven warehouses and eight other rooms were burnt.

Akindele said they were able to salvage the production unit, which is the company’s power house.

Director, State Fire Service, Rasaq Fadipe said three fire stations attended to the Sara foam fire.

“We got the emergency call at 2.30pm but when we got to the scene, we realised that we were informed late because the fire was uncontrollable. The goods in the factory are highly flammable materials. Residents should call 112 or 767 whenever there is an outbreak.

There was another fire that affected two shanty houses in Awoyaya Elefo in Lekki, Lagos.

It was gathered that two residents identified as Taiwo and Matthew set fire on each other’s shanty during a fight.

  • One dead, three injured in road accident

One person died while three others sustained injuries yesterday in an auto accident on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The tragedy, according to the Unit Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Ogun, Mr Omatu Sunday, occurred at about 5.45 a.m.

He said it began when the tipper allegedly damaged the side mirror of the bus, following which bus’ driver and conductor insisted that tipper’s driver must replace the mirror.

The tipper’s driver reportedly drove off, prompting the conductor of the bus to jump into the tipper in efforts to prevent the driver from escaping.

The tipper lost control and ran into a stationary trailer. The conductor died, while its three other occupants sustained varying degrees of injuries,” he said.

Sunday said the body of the conductor was deposited at the morgue of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, while the injured persons are receiving treatment at the hospital. NAN.

  • Three injured as fire guts building in Lagos

An inferno, on Sunday, gutted a three-storey building, next to that which collapsed on Tuesday, at Ojodu Berger, Lagos, leaving no fewer than three persons injured.

The incident, which according to sources, occurred at about 8:12am, was caused by a generator spark.

Meanwhile, another building collapsed early yesterday at Ojo, a Lagos suburb. The building, located in Liverpool Estate, Zone 11, Ijegun, Oriade Local Council Development Area (LCDA), was said to have collapsed at about 12am, although no casualty was recorded.

Chairman of the Estate, Victor Nnotum, told The Nation: “Yes, a three-storey building collapsed early this morning. It happened at about 12am. Because our estate is located within the carnal area, we are trying to ensure that children do not come near the affected building to swim or play, so that they do not get trapped.”

Nnotum, who commended the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), for their prompt response, said that although it was not easy gaining access into the area, the rescue agencies acted swiftly to ensure no casualty was recorded.

At the fire site, it was gathered that the three injured persons were trapped inside the building, and were immediately rushed to the hospital where they received treatment and were discharged after their rescue.

A source said: “Eight flats out of 27 assorted flats in the building were razed by the fire.

“The building is like barracks; the occupants do not even have enough air space.’ Why won’t a generator cause fire outbreak? “Those who live here were given quit notice, but I don’t know why people toy with their lives. If you look at the building, you will see that it is not habitable.”

Our source commended the timely intervention of the Fire Service men and other emergency management agencies, noting that but for their quick response, it would have been a serious disaster.

Director, State Fire Service, Rasaq Fadipe, and NEMA’s South West Information Officer, Ibrahim Farinloye, also confirmed the incident.

Fadipe said his men were deployed to quench the fire as soon as they got the tip-off.

He said: “We got the information in the morning that a building next to Tuesday’s collapsed one at 19, Bashiru Street, was gutted by fire. We were told the fire started around 8am and as soon as we got the information, Fire Service men were deployed there.”

Farinloye, who confirmed that the occupants had been asked to vacate the premises, said there had been complaints of fragility.

He said: “The result of the integrity test on the building is still being awaited. But I’ll like to use this opportunity to beg Lagosians to be mindful of the environment and their actions. We were told the fire was caused by a generator. The house is so air-tight. There are close to 27 flats of two and three bedrooms, all packed in one building.”

Farinloye who also confirmed the building collapse at Ojo, said: “We are just leaving there now. It is a three-storey building and it is located right inside the carnal. The building has a good foundation but materials used were substandard. We have been able to secure the place and have also spoken with the community leaders to ensure that children do not go around there to swim. Drainages have also been evacuated and there is calm at the moment. No one was injured.”
