  • Three policemen, eight farmers killed in Nasarawa

Suspected Fulani herdsmen killed three Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) policemen and eight farmers in Mararaba Udege, Aisa and Aguma communities in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, it was learnt yesterday.

Houses were burnt and the communities have been deserted.

The incident happened on June 3.

It was gathered that the policemen were on their way to quell the crisis between the Agatu people and Fulani herdsmen when they were ambushed.

Police spokesman Ismaila Usman, who confirmed this, said the conflict erupted after an Agatu man shot a Fulani and stole his motorcycle.

He said: “As the Fulani launched a reprisal, the police was called in. But unfortunately, our men were ambushed and three were killed.

“One Inspector, a sergeant and a corporal were victims of the attack and no arrest has been made.”

Usman added that normalcy has returned to the affected areas as a team of policemen, headed by an Assistant Commissioner of Police, had been deployed there to maintain order.

Bodies of the deceased had been recovered and deposited at an undisclosed mortuary.

The Paramount Ruler of Agatu Chiefdom, Alhaji Ahmed Kwanaki, identified the dead farmers as Sale Ozala, Oyigoso Sale, Danladi Joko, Abdulahi Musa, Adamu Haruna, Musa Adamu, Yakubu Sale, and Shehu Sabo (Bassa man).

Kwanaki appealed to the state and Federal Government to deploy military men in the area to stem the attacks.

According to him, security operatives earlier deployed in the area were overpowered by the herdsmen as they could not move to the interior where the killings happened.

Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) Husseini Mohammed condemned the attacks and promised to help in arresting the perpetrators.

He said: “If the perpetrators are Fulani, we would expose them and ensure they face the law.

“Agatu people should also expose the criminals among them to end the crisis.”

  • Three policemen held for ‘gambling’ on duty

Three policemen attached to the Lagos State Police Command have been arrested for gambling on duty.

They were arrested at Opebi, Ikeja, after a video, which has gone viral, showed them counting their wins.

A statement by the command’s spokesman, Chike Oti, a Superintendent of Police (SP), said the policemen were alleged to be counting bribes they collected and were smoking.

He said: “Based on the allegation, the Commissioner of Police (Imohimi Edgal) ordered for their arrest, detention and trial. Preliminary investigation into the case revealed that the men were not counting bribes received as alleged but coupons they collected from a game of gambling (Baba Ijebu) they played.

“The men are currently facing disciplinary actions that could lead to reduction in rank or dismissal. It is wrong to engage in such distracting activity while on duty.

“CP Lagos encourages members of the public to always expose, albeit accurately, indisciplined and unprofessional policemen.”

  • Three policemen escape lynching

Three policemen yesterday escaped lynching at Christ the King Cathedral (CKC) Aba, Abia State, for chasing a bus driver into the church premises while mass was on.

The policemen, it was gathered, chased the driver from Asa Road by Azikiwe Junction, into the church for refusing to stop.

The church’s security locked the gate, thereby preventing the mob from entering, and also trapped worshipers from going home.

When the mob refused all pleas to let the officers be, they were let out through the church’s third gate on Obohia road.

An eyewitness, Chiemeka, said the police in Aba are now taking worship centres for granted, and that if nothing is done about such unholy acts, it may lead to serious fracas.

A security guard said since the church cannot permit an angry mob to attack the trapped policemen, it was high time the police force examined the mental status of its recruit.

  • Three policemen held for suspects escape

Two sergeants and a constable have been arrested over the escape of two suspected robbers from the Isheri Osun Police Division.

The suspects were said to have removed their cell’s roof to escape.

The policemen are believed to have aided the suspects’ escape. They claimed to have slept off when the suspects’ escape was discovered the next day during routine cell inspection.

The suspects’ escape is causing panic among residents, who said they helped the police to arrest them.

One of the escapees, simply named Basiru, is believed to have been rearrested by a team led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Camelius Emodi.

The suspect has been charged before an Isolo Magistrates’ Court for alleged wilful damage and escape from lawful custody. He denied the allegation.

According to a senior policeman, the policemen’s Orderly Room trial has begun at the Area M Command Headquarters in Idimu.

He said: “If found guilty, they will be dismissed. The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, has zero tolerance for impunity. How can two suspects break the roof and escape under their noses?”

According to the command’s spokesman, Olarinde Famous-Cole, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), the suspects were arrested for stealing.

He said: “There was no case of armed robbery at Isheri Oshun, rather, stealing was reported and the case has now been charged to court.

“Concerning police conduct as regarding the incident, the policemen involved in the incident have all been defaulted and they will be disciplined departmentally.”

  • Three policemen held for suspect abuse

Three policemen with the Bariga Division have been arrested for allegedly chaining a man to a generator.

They are facing orderly room trial at the command headquarters in Ikeja, Commissioner of Police Fatai Owoseni said yesterday.

According to Owoseni, the policemen after arresting the victim on July 16, chained him to a generator at the station.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO), who was on routine station inspection, stumbled on the case and got the policemen arrested.

Owoseni, who frowned at the unprofessional conduct of some policemen, said the directives of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, that international best practices be followed in policing would be respected.

He said: “In view of the desire by the IGP to sanitise the force, the three policemen involved in the act are being tried and adequate disciplinary actions will be taken against them at the end of the trial. The policemen had arrested a man for committing an offence on Bariga road. They took him to the station where he was handcuffed to a generator.

“The command frowns at any case of misconduct against any of its men. Policemen are advised to operate within the ambit of their guidelines. Anyone found wanting in the discharge of his duty will be made to face the wrath of the law.

“People who feel their rights have been trampled on should approach the various platforms for compliant and desist from self-help.”

On the command’s efforts to contain crime, Owoseni said 53 armed robbery suspects and 12 suspected cultists were arrested in the past three weeks.

He said 10 weapons, 13 rounds of live ammunition and 30 vehicles were recovered during the period.
