  • Three ‘wise’ men take Maltina Teachers’ crown

If competence were measured by size, then Olasunkanmi Samuel Opeifa would not have been crowned the 2018 Maltina Teacher of the Year (MTOY) last Thursday.  Neither would Olalekan Adeeko and Temitope Popoola have been named the first and second runners up at the event held at the  Shell Hall of the MUSON Centre, Onikan, Lagos Island.

The three teachers would easily pass for secondary school pupils if they wear school uniform.  But their brilliance, effectiveness and commitment to the teaching profession shone through and showed that their stature did not affect their productivity.

It is the first in the history of the competition started in 2015 that the top three of 26 finalists would be all men.

Opeifa an English teacher, was presented with the star prize of N5 million to be spread across five years – plus N500,000 for being shortlisted as the best teacher in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

His school, Government Day Secondary School, Karu, Abuja, would get a block of classrooms courtesy of Nigerian Breweries plc, sponsors of the competition.

Adeeko a Computer studies teacher from Baptist Boys High School, Abeokuta, Ogun State got N1 million; while Popoola, who teaches Physics at the Deeper Life High School, Akure, Ondo State got N750,000.  Both also got N500,000 each for emerging the best in their states.

Opeifa’s journey to the classroom was filled with doubts because of his diminutive statue.  The graduate of English Education from Lagos State University (LASU) said his father initially questioned his choice of profession but later supported him.  He also said a principal asked how he would enforce discipline in the classroom.

“My father did not want me to go to the university.  He said that I should go and learn how to sell spare parts in Port Harcourt.  He asked how I can be a teacher with my size. But he changed and encouraged me,” he said.

He thanked Nigerian Breweries for the prize which is funded by the Felix Ohiwerei Trust Fund.

“This is a step forward in education.  I want to dedicate this award to my wife.  We are doing a lot in this country to produce children despite the harsh working conditions,” said the 32-year old indigene of Ogun State.

Twenty-three other finalists from Ekiti, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Lagos, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Abia, Edo, Anambra, Akwa Ibom,a Plateau, Taraba and others were also honoured at the event.  They got N500,000 each.

Chairman of the Panel of Judges, Prof Thomas Ofuya said the judges were satisfied with the quality of winners and their contribution to the Nigerian education system.

“Teachers are finally being rewarded and we are happy to be witness to it.  I am impressed with the extent Nigerian Breweries has gone in improving education.  Teachers influence almost every area of our society,” he said.

In his speech, the Managing Director, Nigerian Breweries Plc., Mr. Jordi Borrut Bel said the decision to start the teachers’ award in 2015was taken when the firm noticed support for teachers was missing from its Corporate Social Responsibility projects.

Borrut Bel said NB Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund had over the years impacted over 25,000 students with over 400 classrooms, 30 libraries and laboratories built in over 40 communities across Nigeria.

In his remarks, the Minister of State for Education, Prof Anthony Anwukah praised NB Plc for its huge investment in education.

Diggnitaries at the event include Mrs. Yetunde Odetayi, Permanent Secretary, in the office of the Deputy Governor of Lagos, Boboye Oyeyemi, Corp Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps and Desmond Elliot, member, Lagos State House of Assembly among others.

Since inception, the Maltina Teacher of the Year has produced four grand winners: Rose Nkemdilim Obi from Anambra State (2015), Imoh Essien from Akwa Ibom State (2016) and Felix Ariguzo from Delta State (2017) and the current champion.

‘Three Wise Men’ rocks despite poor cinemas schedule, says producer

DESPITE complaints of poor cinema schedules for Three Wise Men, producer of the flick, Opa Williams, said the movie rocked.

“Three Wise Men as (a) movie comes with all the ambits of modern filmic practice; high production value, star power, strong entertainment and thematic thrust,” noted the ace producer on Thursday.

“One will say the demand to watch the movie was not met, not by share awareness because it trended both in conventional and new media but by poor time scheduling and also coming at a time when the distributors also had their own movie with a deep pocket for production value, collaborative strength and media clout.”

A movie maker who saw the movie but wants to remain anonymous however flayed the cinemas, observing that they should have supported the movie which is also a BOI project because the cinemas also got BOI support.
“The distributors have not fared well to support the BOI initiative of elevating the industry,” he said.

“The movie is a BOI project just as the distributor got support from BOI in establishing the cinemas. One will expect them to give a BOI project some level of priority but that doesn’t seem to be happening.”

Directed by Pat Oghre-Imobhio and produced by Opa Williams, Three Wise Men is one of the beneficiaries of the Bank of Industry (BoI)’s loan scheme tagged Nollyfund. Apart from being a BOI sponsored movie,

Three Wise Men is one of the movies made by one of the pioneers of Nollywood producers with Okey Ogunjiofor’s yet to be released Queen Amina.

The movie is about three retirees acted by Richard Mofe-Damijo, Zack Orji and Victor Olaotan, who settle in a suburb to enjoy their retirement benefits after many years of service in different government parastatals. Leader of the gang, Irikefe (RMD), a divorcee with three failed marriages after five children, refurbishes his flat, buys a laptop, a nice sports car and goes shopping for jeans, T-shirts, sneakers and everything a young man could dream of. The three men become an item as Irikefe introduces them to his world of fun; from tracking girls on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, joy riding to clubbing. RMD’s portrayal of this ‘sagging’ and tattoo-wearing characters makes as much thrilling effect as his act of taking selfies and posting them on his social media platforms.

Other cast of the movie include Ebere Okaro, Thelma Nwosu, Uche Nwaefuna, Akunna Nworgu and Stanley Edirin Isokoh.

Opa William’s  Three Wise Men gets BoI’s funding

As film festivals and award ceremonies warm up for their 2016 edition, there are indications that most of the Nigerian films that will top the list are the big-budget productions coming from the Bank of Industry (BoI)’s Nollyfund, the latest  being The Three Wise Men, produced by popular comedy entrepreneur, Opa Williams.

Just like some of the previous films which benefitted from the bank’s first scheme of N1.0billion in easy-access interest loan, tagged BOI Nollyfund (BNF), The Three Wise Men is an ensemble caste of top-rated actors such as Richard MofeDamijo (RMD), Zack Orji, Victor Olaotan, Tina Mba, and Ebele Okaro.

Directed by Patience Oghre Imobhio, The Three Wise Men makes the fourth, in the series of more than a dozen film projects which have already received a nod from the development bank, the others being Kunle Afolayan’sThe CEO, Okey Ogunjiofor’s Queen Amina and Emem Isong’s Anyama.

During a visit of the film’s location in Parafa, Ikorodu on January 20, 2016, BOI’s officials led by Mrs. Uche Nwuka C. Nwuka, Group Head, Creative Industry met the major cast on set, and observed the shooting of two scenes, involving RMD, Zack Orji, Victor Olaotan and GennfieKanu, a relatively new actress, while Tina Mba and Ebele Okaro amongst others were seen rehearsing their lines.

Nwuka was accompanied by other officials of the bank, including Okechukwu Madu, Assistant Manager (CI); Stanley Onugu , Assistant Manager (LE Credits); Tejumade Talabi, BO(CI) and Toyin Oyekanmi, BO(CCD).

Williams informed the BOI team that 30 members of the crew are involved in the production of the film, adding that the project has also employed about 100 individuals, including new set of actors that are being groomed for various roles.

The group which has been monitoring the production and post-production of the BNF projects, observed that the cast and crew list submitted to the bank are the same individuals engaged in the production. Just as it found that the film is being shot on Red Epic, and Red Scarlet cameras provided by the accredited studio.

Nwuka, who also interacted with the actors on location, expressed satisfaction at the level of work done so far. She said her bank is encouraged by the efforts of filmmakers who have benefitted from the scheme so far, to produce highly commercial and international standard movies; hence the bank is expanding its chain of exhibition outlets around the country.

She reiterated that BOI has already accredited some reputable distributors such as G-Media, Filmone Distribution Company, Silverbird Distribution Company, and Genesis Deluxe Distribution Company, as well as  Studio Operators such as Fans Connect Online Nigeria Limited (i.e. Afrinolly), Kingsley Ogoro Productions Limited, and 4Screams International Nigeria Limited) to support this initiative.

It would be recalled that the Bank of Industry had in the recent past, financed creative-industry projects such as Half of A Yellow Sun, Flower Girl, Digitization of Silverbird Cinemas, G-media and establishing of Filmhouse Cinemas, Viva Cinemas and Ozone Cinemas among others.

  • THREE WISE MEN: RMD’S ‘LIFE’ OF BLINGS, TATTOOS & BABES AFTER RETIREMENT

Parafa, a sleepy outskirt of Ikorudu, a Lagos suburb, swelled quietly with the presence of celebrity actors who were part of the rich cast of a new movie, The Three Wise Men, produced by comedy merchant, Opa Williams. The director, Pat Oghre wore a serious countenance – calling the shots.  The set is housed by a storey building which contains a large studio, an editing suit, changing rooms, props and costumes room.

It was on a day when the big shots were all on set; Richard Mofe Damijo, Zack Orji, Victor Olaota, Ebele Okaro and Tina Mba – they did not add to the pressure on the film director, who was pressed for time. If anyone increased her burden, it was a relatively young actress, Gennfie Kanu who did not master her lines, a Bible verse, quite adequately. Sitting between RMD and Zack Orji, with Olaotan at the other end was enough to make the points fly off her head. It was an opportunity of a life time, and Gennfie had to prove herself or be replaced by the no-nonsense director. Of course she got the sympathy of the men, who probably felt they were part of the challenges of the young girl, unconsciously.

DIRECTED by Pat Oghre, and produced by Evi Opa –Williams, Three Wise Men captures the follies of three aged men; Irikefe (Richard Mofe Damijo; Timi (Zack Orji and Tobore (Victor Olaotan) in a dramatic comedy lined with deep social and moral messages.

A first feature-length film by Opa Williams of the Night of a Thousand laughs fame. The comedy satirizes the actions and intents of the elderly trio in their mid/late 60’s as they struggle to re-live their lost youth.
