Three cops detained over alleged murder

Three policemen attached to Onitsha Police Area Command, Anambra State, were said to have been detained at the police headquarters, Awka for allegedly killing a father of three, Mr. Chibueze Nwakor, who lived at 15F, Haruna Street, Odoakpu/Sokoto Road junction, on October 13, about 6pm.

Counsel for the family, Anayo Emejue, in a chat with reporters in Onitsha, alleged that the deceased was shot dead without any provocation by three policemen led by Jude Utazi.

He said: “We were told that the three policemen, attached to Onitsha Police Area Command, have been detained in Awka. But when we got to Awka, we saw them moving freely on the streets.

“This was a father of three who hailed from Owerre-Ezukala, Orumba South Local Government, but he lived with his family at 15F, Haruna Street, close to Sokoto Road junction, where he did business.

“He didn’t commit any offence, just that he refused to answer their questions and he was shot by trigger-happy policemen and they jumped into their ash coloured commuter Hiace and zoomed off.

“The victim was rushed by his neighbours and friends to White Chapel Hospital where doctors later referred him to New Hope Hospital. Because of the severity of the bullet wounds he sustained, he died before he could receive medical attention, leaving his wife and three children to their fate.

“This is not even a case of torture or assault on the victim, not a case of trespass by the person, but wilful murder of a citizen without any justification or provocation.

“The deceased’s wife wants the police to explain why she was forced into widowhood without notice.”

In a petition written to the Acting Inspector General of Police, wife of the deceased, Mrs. Dorcas Nwakor, and step-brother to the deceased, Obinna Nwakor, through their counsel, Anayo Emejue, said the accused policemen led by Jude Utazi killed the deceased for allegedly refusing to answer questions put to him.

The petition was copied to Commissioner of Police Anambra, State Director of DSS, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abuja, Director, National Human Rights Commission Abuja, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, among others.

  • Three in court for impersonating Sunny Ade

The police yesterday arraigned three persons at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly using the name of Juju music icon, Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye (aka King Sunny Ade-KSA), to swindle the public to the tune of N3.1million

The police charged Lawrence Oyedokun, 27, Rebecca Oyebode, 23, female, and Oyewumi Abiodun, 27, with four counts of conspiracy, impersonation, stealing and obtaining money under false pretences.

Oyedokun and Oyebode live in Osun State, while Abiodun, who resides in Oyo State, however, denied committing the offence.

Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clifford Ogu told the court that the defendants committed the offence last month at Ikeja, Lagos.

He alleged that the defendants created fake Instagram accounts of King Sunny Ade to dupe people.

“The defendants opened an Instagram page with Sunny Ade’s name, advertising that KSA would want to assist interested people to travel on music tours to Europe, America and Asia.

“They also wrote on the Instagram page that those interested in the tour should pay from N50,000 to N100,000, depending on the area of interest.

“People began to pay money into the accounts the defendants provided and they were withdrawing the money daily and promising to contact the victims as at when due.

“The defendants were tracked to Oyo State where they were arrested.

“Ninety-five thousand naira was recovered from the defendants as they were withdrawing the loot,” the prosecutor said.

Magistrate J.A. Adegun admitted the defendants to N300, 000 bail each with two sureties each in the like sum.

He ordered that the sureties should be employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case continues on May 22.

  • Nigeria, Ghana, three others listed

Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, Benin Republic and Cameroun are among the countries listed for the maiden Lagos City Cycling Grand Prix (LCCGP), scheduled for January 18 to 19, 2019 holding in Lagos.

The tourney is the brainchild of Shonga Africana Limited, in collaboration with the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) with the aim of getting the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) status, while the schools’ event has been dedicated to the late Chairman of LSSC, Deji Tinubu, who passed on earlier this year. UCI is the world governing body for sports cycling and oversees international competitive cycling events.

For the Executive Chairman of LSSC, Kweku Tandoh, the idea of the Grand Prix was in line with the vision of the Lagos State Government to involve the private sector in sports development. “We are excited with this innovation again and that is what we have been clamouring for in terms of private sector participation in sports development. We are indeed in support of this kind of initiative that will make the state a sports destination for tourists across the globe,” Tandoh said.

The initiator and Managing Director of Shonga Africana Limited, Daniel Anyankah said the goal of LCCGP is to have a world class event such as the Tour de France and also to get UCI accreditation for the championship.

“It is our belief that this event – LCCP will be a catalyst for the development of cycling as a sporting event using Lagos as a focal point. We also aim to use this project to stimulate the interest of the general populace towards cycling as a pleasurable fun activity for fitness and for function as an option for urban transportation as is found in some more advanced cities such as Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin and Beijing,” he said.

The two-day tournament will have students in secondary schools competing on the first day – January 18 with the prize for the winner dedicated to departed LSSC boss, Deji Tinubu for his immense support to the project and his belief in the idea of Catch-Them-Young, which prompted the secondary school category.

At the well-attended event to unveil the LCCGP tourney, the widow of Deji Tinubu pledged on behalf of the family to donate a bicycle to the winner of the secondary event.

The Nigeria Cycling Federation and the Lagos State Cycling Association will provide technical support at the two-day 100km cycling tourney.

  • Three ‘randy’ LASU teachers risk sack

Three lecturers at the Lagos State University (LASU) may be sacked for allegedly sexually harassing their students.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) learnt yesterday that the institution’s governing council has concluded investigations into the matter.

NAN learnt that the teachers may be sacked after next month’s meeting of the council.

A source told NAN that two of the teachers asked two female students to come and re-sit papers on a Saturday with intent to take sexual advantage of them.

The source said the students reported the issue to the security department, which advised the girls to play along with the teachers so as to catch them.

According to the source, the lecturer directed two female medical students to buy an injection, which he used “to sedate them and take advantage of them sexually’’.

Reacting to the allegation, the lecturer described the allegation against him as the handiwork of mischief makers.

He confirmed that a panel invited him to answer questions on unethical conduct, arising from a medical prescription he gave to students.

The two other lecturers declined to make comment.

The council would also decide the fate of three executive members of the LASU Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), accused of stealing a confidential document and committing other offences.

LASU spokesman Ademola Adekoya said the recommendations of the panel would be ratified by the council.

Adekoya described the issues, especially those relating to sexual harassment and stealing of official documents as regrettable, restating the school’s determination to sanitise the system.

He described cases of misconduct as unacceptable to the university, saying that the institution had zero tolerance to such.

“The panel is ongoing. The joint committee of senate and council is already sitting and would make its recommendations to the governing council.

“Whatever they recommend would be considered by the governing council in its sitting next month and the decision of the council would be final,” the spokesman said.

LASU Registrar Olayinka Amuni told NAN that the punishment for sexual assault by a staff once established, was outright dismissal.

“Once we are able to establish that a staff engaged in an illegal relationship with any student, the person is dismissed from the system because it is the height of academic irresponsibility.

“We are an institution guided by rules and regulations and once we have an official report or an allegation of someone indulging in sexual harassment, the first thing we do is to issue query to the person.

“The query is to get information from the person whether indeed, that really happened or not.

“We would examine whatever response you give with the evidence before us and if the evidence is not genuine, we won’t push further.

“But if we can find element of truth in what is before us, the matter is sent to disciplinary committee and the sanction for such activity is dismissal,” Amuni said.

  • Businesswoman ‘dupes pastor, three others of N18b’

An Ikeja Special Offences Court has ordered that a businesswoman, Olaremi Dilureni,  be remanded in Kirikiri Prisons for allegedly defrauding a pastor,  Anthony Rapu, and three others of N23 million and $50 million (N18 billion).

Rapu, a medical doctor, is the senior pastor of House of Freedom.

Dilureni whose business name is Creadon Ventures, is facing an eight-count charge of conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence and stealing preferred against her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

    She pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Mrs Fadeke Giwa, said Dilureni committed the offence with four others,  who are now at large,  between March and May 2013.

On the run are Lola Anjorin, Tunde Oladunmaye, Oluremi Osubo and a company, Home Concepts.

According to her, Dilureni, on April 16, 2013, obtained N10 million from Rapu under the guise that the cash would be invested in a diesel supply business with a monthly interest rate of 6.5 per cent.

“On April 17, 2013 the defendant received another N10 million from Rapu for the business deal,” she said.

The prosecutor claimed that Dilureni defrauded two members of a popular Lagos family.

According to Mrs Giwa, the defendant in March, 2013, fraudulently received $50 million from Mrs Eyitope St.Matthew Daniel and converted the cash to personal use.

She said the defendant fraudulently received another N320,000 from Mrs Nellie St. Matthew Daniel on May 8, 2013 on the pretext that it was for the same business.

The prosecutor alleged that the Diluremi also fraudulently received N3 million from Adeojo Babasegun.

Following Dilureni’s plea, Mrs Giwa told Justice Sherifat Solebo that she just got  a motion for bail from the defence counsel and asked for time to respond to it in writing.

But the defence counsel,  Tunde Kolawole, urged the court to remand his client in EFCC custody instead of prison because “she is a nursing mother and has been in the EFCC custody since Thursday. She was just brought to court today.”

Justice Solebo rejected his request and ordered that Diluremi be remanded in Kirikiri.

The case continues on  March 14.

  • Boy, three others killed as container falls on Okada

Boy, three others killed as container falls on Okada

A three-year-old boy and three others were killed yesterday when a containerised trailer lost its truckhead on Kara Bridge  on the Lagos-Ibadan Express way.

The truckhead plunged into the nearby river, while the container fell on a motorcycle on which the boy and her mother were riding. The woman and the motorcyclist are lying critically ill in hospital.

The remaining part of the truck crashed into the road median, causing traffic gridlock for hours. The traffic stretched from Kara to Ogudu on the Third Mainland Bridge.

Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) General Manager Adeshina Tiamiyu said investigation showed that the truck head  detached from its body while on motion and rammed into the motorcycle.

He said: “The head of the truck plunged into Isheri Olofin River. Unfortunately, a three-year-old boy on the motorcycle lost his life while his mother had leg fracture and they have been moved to the hospital by  Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) officials.

“The head of the truck that plunged into the river was recovered  with the aid of a crane with support from the local divers. Three adult male were extricated and recovered from the truck head and handed over to FRSC officials who moved them down to the morgue.”

Tiamiyu said among the responders were the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Lagos State Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), police  and OP Mesa.

He advised motorists, especially articulated truck drivers, to  drive within the speed limit and ensure  adherence with road safety regulations.

Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) public relations officer Babatunde Akinbiyi said the bodies had been deposited at the  Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH) morgue in Sagamu.

He said: “A container-laden Mark Truck marked NND 133 XA, had a brake failure and rammed into a Bajaj commercial motorcycle with number plate  EKY 221 QA, with the head of the truck plunging into the  river, while the container it was carrying fell on a woman and the child on the motorcycle.

“We learnt the Okada rider is in the river with the other occupants of the truck, the number of which cannot be ascertained now, as local divers have been contacted for rescue operation.”

  • Boy, three, in coma needs N9m lifeline

Boy, three, in coma needs N9m lifeline

A three-year-old boy, Caleb Popoola, is on admission at the Paediatric and Child Care Unit of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja. He is in a coma on a life support machine. Master Caleb’s doctors have diagnosed him with a brain tumour and he needs N9 million to survive.

A letter from LASUTH said Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) done on Caleb  showed that he has a large Brainstem glioma with mild hydrocephalus.

His father, Akeem Popoola said Caleb, his first son, had been on a LASUTH hospital bed for three weeks.

The distraught father said the surgery would be done at Fortis Hospitals Limited in India.

He said: “It will cost N2, 711,250 ($7,500), while feeding and accommodation in India will cost N759, 150 ($2,100). Air ticket for Caleb will cost about N5 million because we cannot book normal air ticket for him, although we are still looking for something cheaper.

“He will be travelling on a stretcher, life oxygen and possibly the airline’s medical team will be on board to support him. My wife and I will also be travelling with him and we will need N860, 000 to buy air tickets because a ticket costs N430, 000 per person.”

Popoola noted that since the illness began last June 15, the family had spent about N1.8 million on Caleb’s health, including hospital bills and getting an Indian visa.

He said Caleb’s sickness started with his limping on the right leg.

“He could not use his right hand and he was less active in school. We took him to a private hospital but we were told nothing was wrong with him. We later took him to LASUTH and we did several tests which came out fine. It was when we did MRI test we discovered that he had the ailment. We were told that where he had the tumour is very delicate and they cannot play around it. I was at the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan and Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital (OAUTH), all to no avail. I was told that his case was delicate and that it could not be handled at the hospitals due to lack of facilities. We are to spend a minimum of 42 days in India,” Popoola said.

He added: “We have taken him to various churches, including The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) at Mowe and Mountain of Fire Ministries (MFM), for prayers.”

Popoola is appealing for financial assistance for Caleb. Naira donations can be made to Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB), account name: Popoola Akeem and account number: 0006748242.

Dollar donations can be paid to Standard Chartered Bank, account name: Popoola Akeem and account number: 0002492351.  He can be reached on 08056573117 or 08095827721.

  • Three teen heroes get scholarship awards

Three teen heroes get scholarship awards

One would have expected them to look perplexed; considering that they are still teens. But they looked unruffled even as huge crowd gathered to witness the event at which they were “crowned” heroes.

Even though they had inkling about the day’s event, as teenagers, it was expected that they would feel a bit shy. They didn’t. That indicates that they were made to be future heroes.

Three of them: Babatimileyin Daomi 15; Salisu Ibrahim 14 and Favour Uwene 11 emerged winners at this year’s Indomie Independence Day Award.

They were rewarded at an award ceremony which held at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.  Babatimileyin, a Senior Secondary School 3 (SSS3) student of Dobar College, Ikorodu Lagos State, won the Intellectual Bravery Award for inventing a vacuum cleaner, USB charger, USB fan, a collapsible bridge (a model of the 4th Mainland Bridge), a hydrogen separator which could also be used to make bombs and a water-level indicator-the specific invention for which he won the award.

But surprisingly, Timileyin (as he is fondly called), is much inclined to art subjects as his favourites. His most favourite subject is English Language. He, however, hopes to be an engineer in the future and to do more with his winning.

According to Timileyin, his challenges were basically funding as he had to create his models from scrap.

“I feel happy and hope to be able to do more with this money,” he said.

Favour Archibong Uwene, a Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS 3) pupil of Government Secondary School, Akwa Ibom State, won the Physical Bravery Award for raising the alarm which led to the rescue of one of three sisters who are her friends.

During one of the holiday periods, she went to their house and no one was there. She, at first, thought they were hiding from her but as she was about to leave, she heard muffled sounds. She peeped through the window and saw two dead bodies, with the killer getting ready to kill the third girl.

Favour immediately ran to call her mother who then alerted their neighbours and they all rushed to the girls’ house. The killer was apprehended and handed over to the police.

According to Favour, she was not afraid to raise the alarm because all she wanted was for her friends to be saved.

Favour hopes to be a teacher in future.

Salisu Ibrahim’s story sounds a bit pathetic. He won the Social Bravery Award for his determination to live beyond his disability.

Salisu was born blind but he chose not to beg. He is learning to be a cobbler and from the proceeds of his sales, he sponsors himself in school–Special Education Centre, Bauchi.

Each award category attracts N1 million in scholarships but with Salisu’s story, the audience was moved to do more.

Ace comedian, Ali Baba, gave him an additional N500, 000; Executive Director of Zenith Bank, Mr. Ebenezer donated N500, 000; Managing Director of Transatlantic Shipping Agency, Dr. Uche Ohafia donated N250, 000; Managing Director of Micro-Media donated N100, 000 while Managing Director of First Registrars, Bayo Olugbemi donated N250, 000 each to Salisu and Babatimileyin.

Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora also promised to add a token to Salisu’s prize while a former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Chief Joseph Sanusi also promised to add a token to Favour’s win. An anonymous donor also gave N100, 000 to each of the three heroes.

The Indomie Independence Day Award is an initiative of Dufil Prima Foods, makers of Indomie noodles and other household brands, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibilities (CSR).

The Group Managing Director, Mr. Deepak Singhal said the Indomie Independence Day Awards (IIDA) was established in 2007 to recognise and reward heroism in children, adding that 24 winners had emerged in the last eight editions.

He reiterated that the award, in its ninth year, seeks to recognise heroic deeds in children between the ages of five and 15. This year’s award was divided into three categories, namely intellectual bravery, social bravery and physical bravery.

Singhal noted that selecting the winners was taxing for the judges as so many inspiring heroic stories were received.

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Idiat Adebule, who was represented by Mr. Odeyemi, praised Dufil for the gesture.

She urged parents and guardians to be more committed to the proper upbringing of their children, even as she reiterated government’s determination to continue to fight violence against children.

Keynote speaker and Managing Director of The Educational Partnership Centre (EPC), Dr. Modupe Adefeso-Olateju, who spoke on The Nigerian Child: Our Biggest but yet Untapped Resource, noted that the United Nations International Children’s Fund (UNICEF) had indicated that children under 15 years account for about 45 per cent of Nigeria’s population.

She noted that “the Nigerian child has the capacity and ability to contribute significantly to the development of the country. Stakeholders have a responsibility to cultivate these abilities by increasing access to affordable, high quality education for every child. A child’s socio-economic background and geographical location should not be a barrier to receiving quality education,” she said.

She said an estimated 10.5 million children are out of school, accounting for one-fifth of the global population of out-of-school children.

Adefeso-Olateju said: “I am pleased that Dufil has taken this bold step with the IIDA initiative which provides millions of Naira worth of scholarships to deserving children. This contributes to the development of the Nigerian child and relieving the pressure off the parents.

“I cannot over-emphasise the need to do right by the Nigerian children as they, without any doubt, are the leaders of tomorrow.  We need to get things right with them and only then can they become assets to the country. We need to create an environment where they can develop their natural talents; they must be given a chance to contribute to their societies and, thus, to economic development and the growth of the country.

“Economic growth is necessary for development. However, this growth is very reliant on the cognitive skills of the population. This is why children, as human capital, are fundamental to the success of our nation.”

The panel of judges, chaired by Executive Director of Corona Schools, Olufunto Igun, urged the people to  support the Nigerian child as, according to her, there were many more of Salisus out there who should be supported.

Dignitaries that attended the event were wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, who was represented by Mrs. Ronke Solomon, chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora, former CBN Governor Chief Joseph Sanusi and wife, movie producer Tunji Bamishigbin and Sound Sultan, among others.

The award ceremony was co-sponsored by Daar Communications Plc and Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc.
