  • Thugs disrupt Bauchi House of Assembly

    Political thugs  compelled members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly (BAHA) to adjourn abruptly on Monday. The thugs literally  poured into the chambers, disrupting the the swearing-in of other principal officers of the house.

    The forced adjournment came few mimutes after the the Speaker of the 8th Bauchi  House of Assembly, Hon. Kasuwar Shehu Damina, was sworn-in by Clerk of the House, Abdulkadir Jafar.

    Also sworn-in was Abdulmuminin Bala Fatti Pali from Alkaleri Local Government Area.

    However, it took the timely intervention of the police to prevent the situation from getting out of hand. The police dispersed the thugs with the aid of tear-gas.

    Besides disrupting the proclamation ceremony, the thugs who were said to be supporters of some of the state lawmakers, also picked pockets of some guests.

    Among those who were victims of the thugs was the Majority Leader Hon Aminu Mohammed Tukur representing Burra/Lere in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area (LGA), whose expensive cell-phone was forcefully snatched from his hand.

    Accepting to lead the state lawmakers Damina, an experienced administrator and a two-term chairman of Darazo LGA  in the 1980s, assured “I will be just and fair.”

    He also said: “I will ensure that we make laws that will improve the living conditions of Bauchi people. I will work for the welfare of every- body, including honourable members and the staff of the assembly.”

    The 31-member Bauchi State House of Assembly has one member from Peoples’ Democratic Movement (PDM) and two from Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), while the remaining 28 seats were won by the ruling party, the All Progressive Congress (APC ).

    Among those present at the swearing-in ceremony include:  Senators Suleman Naxif Gamawa (Bauchi North), Ali Wakili (Bauchi South) and Isa Hamman Misau (Bauchi Central).

    Others are: former Deputy Governor, Alhaji Garba Gadi, who was elected alongside former Governor Isa Yuguda, but was impeached, when Yuguda decamped to the PDP. Some members of the  House of Representatives from the state, as well as the state APC chairman, Uba Ahmed Nana and other party chieftains were also present.

  • Meat sellers, thugs clash

    Meat sellers, under the aegis of Chisom Butchers Association, Amansea, in Awka Local Government Area of Anambra State clashed with thugs yesterday. The thugs were allegedly hired by Awka North council area, Chairman Cosmos Okonkwo.

    Briefing reporters yesterday, the association’s chairman, Christian Nwankwo, who was injured in the fracas alleged that the hoodlums wielded dangerous weapons including guns and machetes.

    Nwankwo said the chairman wanted them to pay revenue to the council, which according to him, was against the directive of Governor Willie Obiano.

    Nwankwo, surrounded by his executives including Theo Igwe (patron), Emma Nwagu (vice chairman), Ifeanyi Ezeonu (treasurer) and Akuchi Israel (member), alleged that the association paid N30,000 weekly before Obiano directed that all revenues be paid into the state account, which they complied with.

    He alleged that apart from the N18.7 million cash carted away, they also lost 16 cows worth N2 million.

    Nwankwo said the thugs beat him up, calling on Governor  Obiano to come to their aid.

    The association’s counsel , Emmanuel Okechukwu said Okonkwo’s action was uncalled for as the court had earlier given injunction on the matter.

    Reacting, Okonkwo described the allegations as baseless, saying the police should be allowed to carry out their investigations.

    He said: “The police had started investigations; I don’t know why they are still on such baseless allegations”.

    Meanwhile, Awka Area Commander Usman Yusuf said investigation was on, adding that no one had been arrested.

    Thugs attack Awe’s elder sister

    Suspected political thugs have attacked the elder sister of the Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman Olajide Awe.

    Mrs. Florence Aluko was inflicted with machete cuts in Erijiyan-Ekiti in Ekiti West Local Government Area on Saturday at the farmhouse of the APC boss at Oketere/Aaye area in the community.

    She is said to be on the danger list.

    Sources told The Nation yesterday that the 68-year-old victim was beaten before she was cut on her face and back.

    A chief in the community was alleged to have led three thugs to attack Mrs. Aluko.

    Other women working on the farm with her fled. Mrs Aluko was rescued by good Samaritans, who took her to the State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti.

    It could not be immediately ascertained why she was attacked but some residents believe that the attack was politically motivated.

    Impeachment: Thugs shut down Ekiti

    All was tense yesterday in Ado-Ekiti as the 19 lawmakers who issued Governor Ayode Fayose an impeachment notice were barred from entering the state capital.

    A woman, Modupe Olaiya, was reportedly killed in the wave of protests in many parts of the state against moves to remove Fayose from office.

    Olaiya, according to eyewitnesses, was shot dead in Efon Alaaye during a protest that greeted the arrival in the town of the lawmakers who were on their way to Ado-Ekiti.

    A statement from Speaker Adewale Omirin denied the death rumour.

    The APC lawmakers ran into a barricade erected on the Ado-Ilesa-Aramoko Highway by the protesters at Itawure on the outskirts of Efon.

    The police fired gunshots to disperse the protesters who had held up traffic.

    Soldiers mounting a checkpoint at Efon-Itawure junction stopped the APC lawmakers from proceeding on their trip to Ado-Ekiti for their planned sitting.

    It was not clear at press time whose directive the soldiers were carrying out.

    Many parts of the state  were shut down as suspected political thugs and members of drivers’ unions took over all roads leading into Ado-Ekiti and boundary towns.

    The hemp-smoking and arms-bearing hoodlums blocked the federal highways as early as 6.30 am with trailers, luxury buses, logs of wood and other objects to prevent human and vehicular traffic.

    They were acting on information that the APC lawmakers were on their way to Ado-Ekiti to hold a sitting at the House of Assembly to deliberate on the notice of impeachment issued Fayose and his deputy, Kolapo Olusola.

    The lawmakers are accusing Fayose of eight impeachable offences.

    Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members and hoodlums staged violent protests on the streets of Ado-Ekiti and other towns, warning architects of the planned impeachment to shelve the idea or face their wrath.

    They protested in Ajilosun, Ijigbo, Odo-Ado, Old Garage, Okesa, Ojumose and Secretariat Road.

    Other communities rocked by protests are: Ikere, Ise, Efon Alaaye, Aisegba, Iworoko, Ogotun and Igbemo.

    Some of the roads affected are Ado-Ikere Road which leads to Akure, the Ondo State capital,  Ado-Iworoko Road, which leads to Kwara, Kogi, Abuja and other northern states,Ado-Iyin-Igede Road, which leads to Ibadan and Lagos, Ado-Ijan Road, which leads to Ikare in Ondo State.

    Passengers were stranded as the thugs made bonfires in many parts of Ado-Ekiti and other towns, such as Ikere-Ekiti, Ifaki-Ekiti, Igede-Ekiti and Oye-Ekiti.

    Civil servants and others who live in Akure, the Ondo State capital, but work in Ado-Ekiti could not enter Ekiti State capital. Others who live in Ado and work in Akure were prevented from going to their places of work.

    Some final year secondary school students writing their Senior School Certificate Examinations outside the state capital could not get vehicles to convey them to their schools.

    Motorists and commuters passing through Ikere-Ekiti were stopped and searched by soldiers stationed around Odo-Oja Roundabout and on the outskirts of the town before being allowed to proceed with their journeys.

    Taxi drivers and mini buses plying intra city routes had a harrowing experience in the hands of the hoodlums who maintained that nobody would be allowed to pass.

    Many residents who were on their way to work returned to their homes because of the tense situation. Some of those who ventured out with the hope of boarding taxi cabs returned home, frustrated, after waiting for hours.

    Soldiers and riot policemen later moved round the city to clear the barricades and bonfires erected by the hoodlums.

    Markets, shops, and government offices were closed. Major markets in the state capital, sujch as Erekesan and Bisi, were quiet.

    A band of hoodlums stationed at Oye-Ayede-Isan junction in Oye-Ekiti stopped  a group of journalists from plying the road, claiming that “it is only a permission from the governor that they would be allowed passage”.

    Vehicles going to Kogi State and Abuja from Kwara State were stopped by the thugs. Passengers were stranded at Oye junction.

    A government-owned Ashok Leyland luxury bus was used to block one section of Ado-Ifaki Road, leaving a very little space for vehicles to meander through.

    The House of Assembly’s vicinity was like a war zone as scores of battle-ready riot policemen stood guard at the Secretariat Road junction leading to the complex, preventing vehicular movement.

    Another platoon of riot policemen blocked the Saliu Adeoti Road, which leads to the Assembly.

    They had earlier dislodged a band of thugs who had stormed the Assembly complex.

    One of the vehicles conveying the thugs to the Assembly complex, a blue Toyota Hilux van marked AA 363 YEK was impounded by the police after it occupants reportedly engaged security men in a shootout.

    The Assembly complex and the House of Assembly Service Commission gates were locked. Another set of armed policemen and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) stood guard.

    Eyewitnesses confirmed to reporters in Ado-Ekiti that the APC lawmakers were allegedly coming from Osun State and had rammed into the barricade mounted by the protesters at Ita Ore , a border town between

    The Head of Service, Gbenga Faseluka, and organised labour under the

    leaderships of Trade Union Congress (TUC)  and Nigeria Labour Congress (NUC), had besieged the Assembly in protest, warning the lawmakers against plunging the state into violence.

    Labour, in a statement signed by NLC  Secretary Ade Obatoye, TUC Secretary Joseph Adebayo  and JNC Secretary  Oladele Ayodeji , told workers to see the development as a way of fomenting trouble and put their lives at risk.

    Also yesterday, Igbemo-Ekiti residents, led by Chief Agamago  Adetunji, visited the governor, declaring their support for him.

    “Ekiti people elected you to be their leader and no power under the earth can remove you.

    “We are praying for you and assuring you that you will win all the 26 Assembly seats during Saturday’s polls,” Adetunji told Fayose.

    The Deputy Governor, who responded on behalf of the governor, likened the APC lawmakers’ action to the biblical war of Egypt against the people of Israel. He is confident that the governor will triumph over his  enemies.

    Thugs snatch ballot boxes in Ebonyi

    Suspected thugs invaded many polling booths in Ebonyi State, carting away ballot boxes and other electoral materials.

    At Onuwakpu Market Square in Ikwo Local Government Area, hoodlums wielding AK-47 rifles shot into the air to scare voters and officials away before snatching the materials.

    No police patrol or military vans were seen in the area at the time of the incident.

    The patrol vans suddenly disappeared from the roads as voting began paving the way for the hoodlums to have a field day.

    Similar incidents were witnessed at Nsokara in Ezza South Local Government Area and in other parts of the state.

    The member representing Ikwo/Ezza South Constituency, Tob Okwuru, said the attacks were perpetrated by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

    Late arrival of materials, inadequate materials, mix-up of materials were some of the noticeable errors as the elections kicked off in Ebonyi State.

    These led to late accreditation in many polling centres.

    Labour Party(LP) governorship candidate, Edward Nkwegu, said: “The most disturbing part is that only five incident forms were provided while about 200 persons failed the accreditation by the card readers.

    “How are the rest of the people going to fill the forms?

    “The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should go ahead with the card readers but to work assiduously to ensure that the challenges are solved and that all eligible voters take part in the electoral process.”

    Gun wielding thugs have evaded some polling booths at Nwakpu market square in Onunwakpu Ikwo LGA carting away electoral materials.

    The PDP Deputy guber candidate, Kelechi Igwe is from the ward.

    Our reporter who was in a convoy of journalists monitoring the election witnessed the incident.

    The hoodlums wielding AK 47 riffles emerged from the bush and shot into the air to scare voters and officials away before snatching the materials.

    No police patrol vans were seen in the area for long kilometres of the road fueling anxiety that the hoodlums may perpetrate same action at other polling units along the road.

    Similar incidents were witnessed at Nsokara in Ezza South LGA.

    An eyewitness told our reporter that hoodlums shot into the air scaring voters.

    Electoral officials were said not to be keen on continuing with the exercise because of the exercise.

    The member representing Ikwo/Ezza South Constituency, Tob Okwuru said the attacks were perpetrated by the PDP.

    Lt Col Felix O Alaita in charge of Nkwagu Military Containment of the Nigerian Army said he has mobilised to the area and normalcy has returned.

    Police, thugs clash in Oshodi

    There was pandemonium in Oshodi, Lagos, yesterday during a clash between the Police and thugs.

    According to eyewitnesses, the police came from Alausa, Ikeja to arrest commercial motorcyclists popularly known as Okada riders.

    An Okada rider said the police arrived around noon.

    “They usually come around 10am but today (yesterday), the police came around 12pm and started harassing us. Some of our people were arrested with their bikes,” the motorcyclist said.

    According to him, anyone caught pays nothing less than N10, 000 to retrieve his bike.

    After the police left around 3pm, he said, some boys from Oju Irin came to attack some policemen around Oshodi in annoyance.

    “Elections are close by; we wonder why the officers cannot allow us to make money to spend on our family members because everybody will be indoors. They should at least allow us to make some money this week and stop harassing us. For how long do we continue with this harassment, that was the reason the guys came out to show their annoyance,” he said.

    According to another Okada rider, the police returned in large number around 6pm to deal with the thugs.

    “Some of the guys at Oju Irin were arrested; they shot sporadically into the air and people started running for their lives. My brother, me too, I run ooo,” he said.

    When contacted, the command’s spokesperson, Ken Nwosu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), promised to find out and get back.

    Also yesterday, hoodlums suspected to have come for a rally organised by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) attacked commuters at Stadium Bus stop in Surulere, Lagos, robbing them of money, handsets and other valuables.

    According to an eyewitness, the hooligans operated for over 30 minutes unhindered.

    One George Essien posted on his Instagram how he was robbed and his car damaged.

    “Just got robbed in traffic near National Stadium by some hoodlums on the PDP rally train. Over 30 other cars also vandalised and robbed of phones, money, items. No police in sight in the 15mins operation *ElectionMadness,” Essien wrote.

    Three dead as thugs attack LP supporters

    Three persons have been confirmed dead and several others injured, following attacks on Labour Party (LP) supporters at Amaigbo Ward in Afikpo South Local Government Area of Ebonyi State by suspected thugs of a popular party.

    One of the deceased was Osu Emegha, while the identities of the other two could not be ascertained.

    A witness, Nkumah Okoro Agha,  told our reporter  that the thugs besieged their meeting, brought out machetes and other weapons and attacked  people.

    He said they cut the deceased’s neck and he later died at Mater Hospital, Afikpo.

    “Over 10 other supporters were injured. Most of them are being treated at Mater Hospital, Afikpo”, Agha added.

    Police spokesman Chris Anyanwu said  he was yet to be briefed. He assured of the command’s readiness to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators.

    Anyanwu urged youths to desist from unleashing mayhem on the supporters of other parties, adding that the matter would be investigated and the case referred to the Police Command in Zone 6, Calabar, Cross River State.

  • 23 suspected thugs arrested in Kano

    The Kano state police yesterday paraded 23  suspected political thugs including a female alleged to be sponsor of the killing of one persons, during a clash.

    The police commissioner Idris Ibrahim told reporters in Kano yesterday that, that a clash between two political rivals in LadiMakole in Warawa Local Government Area in Kano state which resulted in the killing and also a wanton destruction of properties.

    According to him “as you are aware on the 23rd of Febuary, around 1700hrs we recorded an incident at Ladin Makole village, where we fracas between two political parties, which resulted in the death of one of the party supporters.

    “When the police spread their dragnet, the area where the incident happened look very obscured and the police could not arrest anybody, and we establish a full patrol in that area, on

    Tuesday we got information of  a build of political thugs around  Tudun Wada area, in the process we arrested 23 suspects with dangerous weapons, in the course of the investigation we discovered that a lady was fingered by this political thugs to cause mayhem in that area.

    The police boss also said that, the suspected political thugs and their alleged female sponsor will be arraigned before the court of law, adding that, these will definitely serve as deterrent to any political party supporter or financiers who had the notion of causing trouble in the state.

    Idris said In a situation whereby some political actors gather innocent children giving them hard drugs to wreck havoc, I think is not in the best interest of our political evolution.

    I want to use this opportunity to call on political parties and every well meaning of this state to ensure they talk to their wards on the inherent danger associated  with violence, during electioneering campaign, talk to their supporters to desist from being engage in destructive tendencies, in the process of advancing their political objectives.

    The inter security agency consultative committee yesterday met and took some far reaching decisions, that henceforth we shall not tolerate  any politicians while on procession or campaign wielding dangerous weapons attacking each other and the process harassing, intimidating innocent people in the community.

    Henceforth we have decided in the joint security committee that anypolitical actor that organizesor encourages thugs wielding their dangerous weapon in the public, we are going to take legal action against them.

    On the issue of buying PVC from eligible voters by some unpatriotic citizens, the police commissioner said that five persons have been arrested and recovered 350 permanent voters card from them

    He accused Aisha Majama’a of assembling youths  to participate in destructive venture by giving drugs and attacking each other, he however frown at the incidence.

    Hajiya Maijama’a in her reaction to the allegation said that “ this issue is politically motivated, let me tell you, I am a mother, how can I hire or sponsor people as thugs it is just a frame up and it can happen to anybody. I am a female political pillar, in my area, these boys are our children, they were directed to go and paste posters by our party headquarters.

    “I later got informed that they were arrested and brought to the police headquarters, so I came here to bail them, that was what happened, like I said it is politically motivated, so I have faith in God and leave everything to God, in life anything can happen to someone either good or bad, but I am telling you, it is politically motivated against me.

    Meanwhile, the meeting under the inter agency consultative committee on election security held at the Kano state police command yesterday resolved that the military will participate in the election process, but will not directly involve in the conduct of the election, because their participation is under the law, whereby they will not be allowed within the vicinity of the polling units, but will be strategically positioned in case of any eventuality.

    The state police commissioner told reporters after the meeting that the security agencies in the state  are prepared to provide maximum security during the conduct of the elections. “As we have all shown, committed and endeavor to ensure that, maximum men are deployed to the nook and cranny of the areas, so that we can have a very peaceful election”.

    AIG vows to tackle thugs

    The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 10, Bala Hassan, said yesterday that the command would not grant bail to political thugs arrested with weapons during campaigns.

    He said the command would not compromise its role of ensuring peace, law and order as well as protecting life and property.

    According to him, the command would not fold it arms and allow thugs to unleash terror and violence on the citizens, especially before, during and after the elections.

    Hassan spoke in Sokoto at a stakeholders’ meeting with leaders of parties.

    Zone 10 comprises Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states.

    He warned that henceforth, any thug arrested with a knife, cutlass or other weapons would be charged.

    “We will, however, ensure thorough investigations to make sure anyone indicted is charged and prosecuted,” the AIG said.

    He promised to provide a level-playing field for the parties.

    According to Hassan, “this is to ensure the protection of life and property before, during and after the polls.”

    Police Commissioner Salisu Fagge assured of the force readiness to ensure the conduct of violence-free rallies and elections.

    He stressed that politicians must respect the rules of the game by obeying the laws of the land and the Electoral Act.
