  • Melaye bail application for Thursday

    A LOKOJA High Court yesterday adjourned hearing of Senator Dino Melaye’s (Kogi West) bail application to Thursday.

    This followed the inability of parties to submit their counter-affidavit and “better” affidavit to the written bail application by Melaye’s counsel, when Kogi State Chief Judge Justice Nasir Ajanah, last Friday, ordered that the lawmaker be transferred to the National Hospital, Abuja.

    The prosecution led by Dr. Alex Iziyon (SAN) presented a counter-affidavit to the written application for bail by Chief Mike Ezekhome (SAN), Melaye’s counsel. But the latter sought the court’s permission to file a “better” affidavit to the counter-affidavit by the prosecution.

    Justice Ajanah asked the parties to pick a new date to allow for the examination of written affidavits.

    Justice Ajanah adjourned for the continuation of hearing in the written bail application filed by the defence counsel, asking for variation of Melaye’s remand order.

    Amosun to distribute C of O Thursday

    Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun will distribute Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) and other land title documents to another batch of beneficiaries under the Homeowners’ Charter Programme.

    The Director-General of Bureau of Lands and Survey, Mr. Biyi Ismail, spoke in his office in Abeokuta, the state capital.

    He said beneficiaries would collect their documents from November 23 at 9 am at the Oba’s Complex Auditorium of the Governor’s Office at Oke-Mosan in Abeokuta.

    Ismail urged contacted beneficiaries to attend the distribution ceremony with valid means of identification and photocopies of same.

    He advised them to be at the venue at 8 am for accreditation.

    Akeredolu to open campaign Thursday

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) has constituted a 30-man Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the campaign launch for its governorship candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN).

    Akeredolu’s running mate Agboola Ajayi is to chair the committee.

    A statement by the publicity secretary, Omo’ba Abayomi Adesanya, said: “The campaign launch is fixed for Thursday at the Democracy Park in Akure, the state capital.

    Expected are President Muhamadu Buhari; Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; National Chairman John Odigie- Oyegun; APC governors and members of the National Assembly.

    Akeredolu said his administration would ensure the state feel more Federal Government impact.

    He said his administration, through the support of the Federal Government would ensure that the state uses gas to supply electricity.

    The APC candidate also promised to work with the Federal Government to develop the dilapidated infrastructures in the state.

  • Maltina’s Teacher of the Year Thursday

    The Maltina Teacher of the Year 2016 will be unveiled on Thursday in Lagos to celebrate and showcase exceptional teachers and the teaching profession.

    The race for the Maltina Teacher of the Year 2016 has sparked excitement and expectations from teachers. After a rigorous screening, the pool of state champions are in the final.

    The Maltina Teacher of the Year, established to recognise, reward and celebrate exceptional teachers, is an initiative on the platform of Nigerian Breweries – Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund. The Fund was established in 1994 by Nigerian Breweries to enable it play active roles in the development of education in Nigeria.

    Since then, the Fund has impacted over 20,000 students across the country. It has built and furnished over 280 classrooms, 280 sanitary facilities and libraries in 40 communities. It has granted scholarships to students and tertiary institutions.

    According to Kufre Ekanem, Corporate Affairs adviser, Nigerian Breweries Plc, “the Education Trust Fund expanded its intervention in education in 2015 through the Maltina Teacher of the Year initiative. The initiative was hinged on the realisation that teachers seldom get recognition despite their pivotal role in training, coaching and determining the quality of education.”

    At the end of collecting, screening and judging of entries, 19 State Champions, two runners-up and a winner, Mrs Rose Nkemdilim Obi, emerged.

    Each State Champion will get N500,000, the 2nd and 1st runners-up will receive additional N750, 000 and N1, 000,000.

    The Maltina Teacher of the Year 2016 will get additional N1,000,000 instantly plus N1,000,000 every year for  five years, a development training abroad and a block of six classrooms built at her school.

  • Court hears suit on NBA election Thursday

    A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) presided over by Justice Y. Halilu will on Thursday begin hearing on a suit filed by Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama (SAN) against the trustees and officers of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for allegedly stealing his mandate.

    The plaintiff, who claimed he won the last NBA election, is challenging the declaration of Mr Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN) as winner.

    Gadzama is seeking a declaration that NBA presidential election held on July 30 and 31 under the supervision of the immediate past president Augustine Alegeh (SAN) and NBA Electoral Committee chaired by Mr. Ken Mozia (SAN) violated the NBA Constitution 2015.

    After hearing interlocutory applications and preliminary objections on the matter during the vacation, Justice Ademola Adeniji returned the file to the Chief Judge for reassignment. The matter was assigned to Justice Y. Halilu sitting in Jabi.

    With the defendants’s failure to file their defence, Gadzama filed a motion for judgment in default of appearance. He also prayed for accelerated hearing since time was of the essence, with the tenure of an NBA president only two years

    In a Counter Affidavit in opposition to the motion, Mr. Yunus Ustaz (SAN), leading other lawyers for the trustees, prayed the court to dismiss the motion for being frivolous and lacking in merit.

    He said: “The Plaintiff filed the originating processes in the suit on August 16 and served his clients during the court’s vacation and that by the Rules of the Court, time for filing and service of pleadings does not run during the yearly vacation of the court.

    “The court resumes from its yearly vacation on September 12, 2016, my clients are still within time to file their statement of defense as their 14 days to file same started counting when the court resumed from vacation.

    “We filed a motion challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the matter, that the court as presently constituted is not competent to hear this matter,” Ustaz Usman said.

    Other defendants in the matter have not filed any statement of defense or motion in respect of the matter.

  • Reps promise to pass budget on Thursday

    The House of Representatives has said it is working towards passing the budget on Wednesday, as promised.

    Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs Abdulrasak Namdaz told The Nation yesterday: “We’re working towards the date.”

    Attempts to speak to the Chairman, Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin  Jibrin, were fruitless.

    He neither picked or returned his calls nor replied to  text messages yesterday.

    Unconfirmed reports said lawmakers may have been under pressure to fix the date.

    Some financial analysts believed that given inconsistencies and confusion trailing defence sessions by MDAs, there would be need for proper scrutiny.

    But chairmen of the Senate and House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Senator Danjuma Goje and Jibrin Abdulmum had assured Nigerians that the budget would be passed on Thursday.

    Goje, on March 3, said subcommittees of both chambers, after interacting with respective MDAs,  had submitted their reports.

    He said there was no reason the National Assembly would not meet the deadline.

    Jibrin also confirmed the date at the joint briefing, saying: “After consultation with the leadership of the House and Senate, we confirm that we should be able to lay our reports before the House and Senate on March 16, for consideration the next day.

    “So it is safe to conclude that the 2016 Appropriation Bill will be passed on March 17, 2016.’’

  • Court adjourns murder trial till Thursday

    •Accused fails to open defence

    In Ikeja High Court yesterday adjourned till Thursday trial of Seun Oladapo for the death of rights activist, Kunle Fadipe.

    Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye adjourned the case at the instance of Oladapo’s counsel Walter Oduagbaka, who sought time to confer with his client. Oladapo was billed to open his defence yesterday.

    Fadipe was allegedly killed by the defendant at his Harmony Estate, Ogba in 2014.

    Praying for adjournment, Oduagbaka said he needed time to talk with Oladapo.

    He said he had not discussed with the defendant since his arrest.

    He sought a short adjournment in order to represent his client will.

    Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Mrs Idowu Alakija urged the court to reject the request, for lack of merit.

    Granting the request, Justice Ipaye held that a counsel must have access to his client in order to represent him well.

    CHAN Eagles off to Burkina Faso Thursday

    Nigeria’s home-based team will depart for Burkina Faso on Thursday for a return leg 2016 CHAN qualifier.

    Nigeria defeated Les Etalons 2-0 on Saturday in Port Harcourt and the overall winners of this fixture will qualify for next year’s CHAN in Rwanda.

    A squad of 18 players from the 23 in the training camp will be named for the trip to Ouagadougou.

    It has been gathered coach Sunday Oliseh will stick with the team who were involved in the first leg in Port Harcourt.

    Goalkeepers Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Femi Thomas, defenders Austin Oboroakpo, Chima Akas, Orji Kalu, Jamiu Alimi as well as midfielders Bature Yaro, Ifeanyi Matthew, Usman Mohammed and Paul Onobi will make the trip.

    Strikers Gbolahan Salami, Chisom Chikatara, Ezekiel Bassey and Osas Okoro have also been penciled down for the trip.

  • Olokun Festival ends Thursday

    The vibrant culture and tradition of Yoruba will be on the front burner once again as the curtains fall on the 2015 edition of Olokun Festival on Thursday, October 22, at the Suntan Beach, Badagry, Lagos State.

    The annual festival, organized by the Olokun Festival Foundation (OFF), kicked off with a prayer session involving Chrsitians, Muslims and traditional religion worshipers on Thursday, October 1, held at the Airport Hotel in Ikeja, Lagos.

    Other activities lined up for the festival include arts exhibition, beauty pageant and Yoruba quiz competition, among several other beautifully arranged programmes.

    The keenly contested quiz competition, which held on Wednesday, October 14, at the All Seasons Plaza, along Agidingbi Road in Lagos, witnessed a large turnout of secondary schools.

    The quiz competition, according to Otunba Gani Adams, Chief Promoter of Olokun Festival Foundation, is part of the concerted efforts of his organization to promote Yoruba culture and tradition.

    According to him, “We have come to the realization that our children are no longer interested in those things that matter to us and our fathers. It is very unfortunate that such thing is happening, and if care is not taken. With this kind of programme, we are gradually rekindling the interest of the youths in our culture and traditions.”

    And indeed, the students did not disappoint, as they thrilled the audience to their understanding of Yoruba culture and tradition. At the end of the competition, students of Army Senior High School went home with the first prize and a cash prize of N70,000. Other winners are State High School and Estate Senior Grammar School, who won the send and third positions respectively.

  • Thursday is public holiday

    The Federal Government has declared Thursday a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 55th Independence celebration.

    The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior Abubakar Magaji made the declaration yesterday on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the ministry’s Director of Press, Yusuf Isiaka.

    Magaji, who congratulated all Nigerians both at home and abroad, also thanked them for their supports to President Muhammadu Buhari in his efforts towards building a peaceful, united and virile nation.

    He urged them to use the occasion of the celebration to pray for peace and unity across the country.
