  • Mikel announces departure from Tianjin Teda

Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel has revealed he has cancelled his contract with Chinese Super League club Tianjin Teda, a year before the agreement between club and player was due to run out.

The Nigerian captain has not travelled with the Tianjin Teda first-teamers to Spain for pre-season training as he is negotiating with the club to break his contract.

In an interview with Tianjin TV Sports New Vision program, Mikel said: ”I broke the contract with the club, which means I will leave Teda. As for my next stop, I am not sure yet, maybe I will return to Europe, maybe stay in China.

”Anyway, I would like to wish the TEDA team good luck next season.”

Mikel performed well for Tianjin Teda in the first half of the 2018 season but struggled with injuries in the second half after representing Nigeria at the World Cup.

Throughout his stay in China, the central midfielder-cum defender featured in 31 Super League matches, scoring 3 goals (3 assists).

Mikel impressive despite Tianjin Teda home draw

Super Eagles and Tianjin Teda Captain John Obi Mikel was in superlative form on Saturday despite being held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Hebei CFFC.

Mikel afterwards led his team to appreciate their supporters apparently believing that a point is better than losing in the opener of a new season.

Prior to the season opener Tianjin Teda had played four friendly matches losing three and drawing one. They conceded 10 goals during the pre-season matches scoring only two, an indication that their strikers will need to up their game if the team is to make a huge impact in the new season.

Away from Tianjin Teda, it was baptism of fire for Dalian Yifang debutants on Saturday.

The trio of Jose Fonte, Yannick Carrasco and Nicolas Gaitan are not likely to forget Saturday March 3rd 2018 in a hurry.

The three players who joined newly promoted Chinese super League Club  Dalian Yifang in February, made their debut for the club on Saturday but were handed an 8-0 demolition by a rampaging Shanghai SIPG. The three players may have come from different countries, Portugal, Belgium and Argentina respectively, but the Saturday’s experience put them in a no smiling mood. They had all started against for their side but found Shanghai SIPG parading Brazilians Hulk and Oscar too hot for comfort.

Shanghai mustered 24 attempts on goal against a weak Dalian side, who were prone to individual errors and struggled to keep possession throughout.

The writing was on the wall from the opening minute when Oscar put the hosts in front, before doubling their advantage in 24 minutes.

Hulk got in on the act when he converted from the spot to put the hosts further ahead on 37 minutes.

The bombardment did not let up in the second half, as Oscar turned provider to set up Wu Lei, before completing his hat-trick on the hour mark when laid on by his fellow Brazilian.

Fonte, who signed from Premier League strugglers West Ham, was substituted in the  81st minute the by Yang Shanping , but there was still time for Wu Lei to grab a second before Hulk again turned provider, this time for Lu Wenjun to complete the rout.

Carrasco and Gaitan, who both signed from Atletico Madrid at the end of the Chinese window, played the entire 90 minutes and will be hoping for a rapid change of fortunes.

Carrasco, who is reportedly on a wage package worth £8.8million a year in Asia, is in contention for a place in Roberto Martinez’s World Cup squad with Belgium.

Chinese league will be tough for foreign players next season – Ideye

The Chinese Super League has been the new pasture for many world and Nigerian football stars but Tianjin Teda of China and Super Eagles’ striker, Brown Ideye revealed that foreign players will find the league very difficult as the local players were now upping their play.

The former junior international, who had been reported to have been in disagreement with management of Tianjin Teda said this on Tuesday in an interview on Sports Café.

He also confirmed that he would be plying his trade away from the Chinese League next season.

“I don’t think I will be playing football in China next season maybe Europe,” Ideye said.

“The Chinese owners are doing their best, they are bringing more big names to the league.

“Month by month it is really tight because most of the Chinese players are picking very fast. From next season, it’ll be a big task on the foreign players.”

Ideye also discarded talks that he alongside Super Eagles captain – John Mikel Obi and other big stars joined the Chinese Super League because of the money.

According to him, football was the reason he moved to China and he alongside the big names in the league were being rewarded based on their input to the league.

On what took him to China, Ideye, said: “It is football. I’m not the only one playing there, Mikel too is playing and some other big names like Pato and Tevez.

“They too have the same aim which is going to China and play football and enjoy every moment on the pitch.

“People think it is that good but you have to work for it (money); nothing good comes easy. You work for it and get your reward.”

The 29-year-old former Olympiakos player, who has been out of the Super eagles squad for over a year also added that he was looking forward to be part of the players that would represent Nigeria at the World Cup.

He added, “I’m looking forward to Russia just like every other player looking forward to the World Cup and hoping to do their best.”

Mikel dazzles in centre back role

Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel impressed in a new position as a central defender as Tianjin Teda were held to a goalless draw by Jiangsu Suning at  Nanjing Olympic Sports Centre.

Tianjin Teda coach Jaime Pacheco was worried that his team conceded so many goals during their warm-up games in pre-season, and Mikel had to be drafted into the central defense in some of the matches.

Yesterday, the former Chelsea star was partnered by Pan Ximing in central defense and helped goalkeeper Du Jia to post a shutout.

Originally an attacking midfielder, Mikel was converted into a defensive midfielder by Jose Mourinho and played as a centre back in two competitive matches while he was at Stamford Bridge.

Mikel has told Tianjin Teda coach Pacheco that he is willing to play any position for the team.

Mikel moves closer to Tianjin TEDA switch

Chelsea midfielder John Mikel Obi is set to undergo a medical on Thursday as he moved closer to a switch to Chinese Super League side, Tianjin TEDA.

The Dailymail  said Mikel, 29, has been offered a package worth around £140,000 per week to become the latest player to swap Europe for the riches of Asia’s emerging football market.

The Nigeria international has held talks with Valencia, while Marseille and Inter Milan have also shown interest, but Tianjin are now at the front of the queue.

Antonio Conte has not included the midfielder in his plans this season, with Mikel out of the first-team picture and behind N’Golo Kante, Nemanja Matic, Cesc Fabregas and Nathaniel Chalobah in the pecking order.

He has continued to train with the rest of the squad but a return to action at Stamford Bridge, where he has spent 11 years, has long-looked unlikely.

Tianjin, who count former Sporting Lisbon midfielder Fredy Montero and ex-CSKA Moscow forward Wagner among their stars, are now offering a way out.

A three-year deal is understood to have been offered to Mikel.

Terms are yet to be finalised but the move is far enough along for a medical check to be undertaken ahead of the potential transfer.

Mikel is primed to leave Chelsea having won two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the Champions League in his time in West London.
