  • 5,000 fans to get free tickets for Nigeria match

The first 5,000 fans at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Sunday will get free tickets to watch the 2024 AFCON Group A Game 6 tie between the Super Eagles and Sao Tome and Principe.

This is courtesy of the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, in a bid to ensure the Super Eagles get maximum support during the dead rubber encounter on the ground that hasn’t been quite favourable to the three-time African champions.

Sports-loving Eno, who visited the Super Eagles’ camp on Thursday at Four Points by Sheraton Hotel, Ikot Ekpene, has already bpurchased 5,000 tickets of various categories for free distribution starting at 2:30 p.m. on the match day.

This is contained in a statement signed and made available to journalists on Friday by the Akwa Ibom State organising committee for the match.

To this end, match tickets have been released and will be available at designated centres across the state starting today, Friday, September 8, at N200 for regular, N500 for VIP, and N1,000 for VIP.

Nigeria, who have already qualified for the continental football showpiece, sit atop Group A of the qualifiers with 12 points from five matches, but they need to avoid defeat against São Tomé and Principe, who anchor the standings with one point, to finish as group winners.

The match will kick off at 5:00 p.m.

  • Champions League: UEFA slashes ticket price for away fans

Tickets for away fans in this year’s Champions League will not exceed 70 euros or N28, 000, UEFA announced Friday.

In the same vein the ticket price for away fans in the Europa league will not exceed 45 euros or N18, 000.

The slash is not unconnected with recent outcry by fans over the rising cost of tickets for the two championships which ultimately leaves fans financially drained in the course of supporting and following their teams.

Both Manchester United and Liverpool were angered by Barcelona charging 119 euros (about N48, 000) for away tickets in the Champions League last season.

“Fans are the lifeblood of the game and those who follow their teams to away matches must have access to tickets at a reasonable price, bearing in mind the cost they have already had to incur for their trip,”UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said Friday, adding

Trabzonspor’s Mikel Obi trains as club gets Getafe tie in Europa

“By capping ticket prices, we want to make sure that away fans can still travel to games and play their part in making the atmosphere inside football stadiums so special,”

The new price cap comes into effect immediately. UEFA said the new maximum prices were equivalent to the lowest category ticket price for the Champions League and Europa League finals respectively.

“This represents progress, and we commend UEFA for their forward thinking,” Football Supporters Europe Executive Director Ronan Evain said in a statement.

“The cap will eliminate the cases of overpricing, but it is, in our opinion, still too high.

“Thankfully, the impact of the new regulation will be reviewed at the end of the season, and as such, we will focus our efforts on lobbying the relevant parties to lower it.”

  • Who gets Edo APC, PDP tickets?

Who gets Edo APC, PDP ticket? There will be no governorship election in Edo State next year. But, would-be state and federal lawmakers are battling for tickets of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Correspondent

THE race to secure the tickets of the major political parties, to vie for National Assembly seats in Edo State is degenerating into dirty fights in some instances. The political platforms where this struggle has been more pronounced are the Action Democratic Party (ADP), the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

For the Edo PDP, the battle for the  ticket was made relatively easy for incumbent National Assembly members, as they were all given automatic tickets. Those who secured the tickets without a fight are Hon. Omosede Igbinedion from Ovia Federal Constituency, Sergius Ogun of Esan Southeast/Esan Northeast Federal Constituency, Senator Clifford Ordia of Edo Central, Hon. Joe Edionwele of Esan West/Esan Central/Igueben Federal Constituency and Hon. Ogbeide Ihama of Oredo Federal Constituency.

In constituencies where the PDP has no representatives in the 8th National Assembly, there are sole aspirants seeking the party’s nod to contest the election. In Akoko Edo Federal Constituency, Mr. Oladele Bankole-Balogun is the sole aspirant. Mr. Abubakar Momoh is also the only aspirant for the Edo North senatorial ticket. In Owan Federal Constituency, Hon. Johnson Agbolagba is equally the sole aspirant.

But, in Estako Federal Constituency, there are three aspirants. They are: Blessing Agbonmhere, Donald Osikhena-Boih and Victor Okhaimho. Ikpoba-Okha/Egor Federal Constituency also has three aspirants. They are: Nosa Adams, Hon. Jude Ise-Idehen and Mrs. Itohan Ogbeide. For the Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode Federal Constituency seat, there are two aspirants, including Lady Uwa Osunbor.

The aspirants tipped to emerge as the party’s flag bearers in the constituencies that are still undecided are; Agbonmhere for Estako, Jude Ise-Idehen for Ikpoba-Okha/Egor and Uwa Osunbor for the Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode seat.

For the ruling APC, the battle is tough. The push by Governor Godwin Obaseki for consensus candidates failed in some areas, as some party chieftains insisted that some of the aspirants that emerged through the process were unpopular and so it would be a tough sell them to the people. The Edo APC successfully used the consensus arrangement for the party’s congresses and selection of its candidates for the local government election. Governor Obaseki, it was learnt, moved for a consensus arrangement to reduce the cost of securing party’s nomination as was experienced by him ahead of the 2016 governorship election.

The APC Secretary, Lawrence Okah, agrees with the governor’s position. He said in an interview recently that the last governorship election was a bitter experience for Governor Obaseki and the entire party structure, because it came at a huge cost to the aspirants. An aspirant for the House of Representatives, Mr. Isaac Osahon, who also backed the call to make campaigns less expensive, said Governor Obaseki was emphatic that he does not want aspirants to spend much to get the party’s nomination.

Osahon said the governor had stressed that he spent so much money in 2016 and would not want any aspirant to sell properties to seek for the party’s ticket.

After the failure of the consensus arrangement, the Edo APC caucus settled for the indirect primary option to elect its candidates. In Edo North, where the party’s National Chairman Comrade Adams Oshiomhole hails from, incumbent Senator Francis Alimekhena got automatic ticket after other aspirants stepped down for him. In Owan, Professor Julius Ihonvbere who is tipped to get the ticket will slug it out with the APC Legal Adviser, Mr. George Ohima, and Harrison Ehimiyen. It will be a two-race race for the Akoko Edo seat between incumbent Peter Akpatason and Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Kabiru Adjoto, while Hon. Johnson Oghuma who is currently representing Estako is battling one Julius Abuda for the party’s ticket.

The candidates likely to emerge in Edo North are: Senator Francis Alimekhena, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere and Johnson Oghuma. But, there are still doubts as to who will get the ticket in Akoko Edo between Akpatason and Adjoto. Prof. Ihonvbere’s desire was to go to the Senate, but he was asked to step down for Alimekhena and he obeyed. Oghuma appears to have the backing of the party, because he only got elected into the House of Representatives in 2017 after the exit of Philip Shaibu who became the Deputy Governor. Some APC leaders argue that Oghuma should be allowed to do another term, because he has only done half term.

    Edo Central

In Edo Central, with five local government areas, the Commissioner for Finance, Mr. John Inegbedion, is locked in battle with a former member of the House of Representatives, Patrick Ikharhiale, for the APC senatorial ticket. Many party chieftains have penciled down Inegbedion as the likely candidate to emerge. The main challenger, Chief Francis Inegbeneki, stepped down from the race to support whoever the party structure is disposed to. The support for Inegbedion stems from the way he managed the party leadership in Igueben after the exit of Chief Tom Ikimi from the APC. Inegbedion secured victory for the party in the 2015 general elections in an area, which was supposed to be a stronghold of the PDP.

For the Esan Southeast/Esan Northeast Federal Constituency seat, Prince Odianosen Okojie, the husband of Nollywood actress Mercy Johnson, will slug it out with a former council chairman, Mr. Joseph Ikpea. Prince Okojie appears to be the party’s favourite to pick the ticket, because the APC wants to end the PDP’s dominance in the area. Ikpea is from Esan Southeast where the incumbent lawmaker, Sergius Ogun, hails from.

The aspirants for Esan West/Igueben//Esan Central Federal Constituency seat of the party are: Deputy Speaker Victor Edoror, Ojieomon Ebohon and Patrick Idiake. Idiake is said to be favoured to be the party’s candidate by consensus, but Edoror’s popularity may give him victory in direct primary.

    Edo South

The battle for the APC ticket for Edo South is a straight fight between old foes, Emokpae Erhabor and Patrick Obahiagbon, who is more popularly known as Igodomigodo. Emokpae and Obahiagbon contested for the same senatorial ticket in 2015 and both of them lost to Samson Osagie. Obahiagbon is believed to have the backing of the party’s hierarchy, but Emokpae is not disturbed and has vowed not to step down. He denied reports that he has agreed to step down for his opponent and added that he has no intention of doing so, even though nobody has approached him.

Emokpae said: “I am not backing down. There is no such thing. The race, currently, is a two-horse race clearly between myself and my opponent and the contrast between the two of us could not be clearer.

“In Edo South, we need freedom of choice. Freedom of choice is the foundation of true democracy. So, we are going to have a democracy; the National Chairman has promised no less.

“I will do my best. I will present what I will do and the people will decide. I am working with the people and the people are behind the delegates.”

For the Oredo House of Representatives seat, Hon. Osaigbovo Iyoha and Osaro Obazee are in the race for the ticket. Iyoha who is the Chief Whip of the Edo State House of Assembly is believed to be the candidate that has the clout to defeat the incumbent lawmaker, Ogbeide Ihama. He may likely emerge the party’s candidate.

Hon. Ehiozuwa Agbonnayima, the lawmaker representing Ikpoba-Okha/Egor Federal Constituency is battling for the APC ticket with on Victor Obanor. Agbonnayima has secured the support of major party stakeholders in the area and is likely to be given the return ticket.

In Orhionmwon/Uhunmwode Federal Constituency, incumbent Patrick Aisowieren will have to defeat a former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Elisabeth Ativie, to secure the party’s ticket. Aisowieren hails from Orhionmwon, while Ativie hails from Uhunmwode. The APC structure in Orhionmwon and majority of the leaders in Uhunmwode has endorsed Aisowieren to get a return ticket. So, he is likely to get the ticket.

The battle for the Ovia Federal Constituency seat is between Isaac Osahon and Dennis Idahosa. Osahon was in the House of Representatives between 2011 and 2015. He lost his return bid in 2015 to Omosede Igbinedion. It is not clear who will pick the ticket, as neither has agreed to step down.

Major aspirants that have picked the ADP ticket are Mr. Pius Alile, who is seeking to represent Ikpoba-Okha/Egor Federal Constituency. Alile recently sunk boreholes in some communities and graded some roads to woo voters. He said he would lobby other lawmakers to bridge the infrastructural deficits in the constituency.

Ese Owie, a son of a former Chief Whip of the Senate, also picked the ADP form to contest for the Senate. Owie who dismissed people referring to him to as daddy’s boy said he is contesting on his pedigree and achievements.

  • Why we’re involved —Nollywood stars who clinched their parties’ tickets

Why we’re involved —Nollywood stars who clinched their parties’ tickets

Like never before, the 2015 general election will for a long time be remembered as one in which Nigerian entertainers not only found their rhythm but also found their voices. Tired of living a life of make-believe in movies and songs, and wanting to prove a point to their doubters, the entertainers came out in full force into politics, not as mere supporters but as contenders for political offices in the elections.

Three of the Nollywood stars  Desmond Elliot, Shola Onayiga and Funke Adesiyan  who clinched their parties’ tickets, shared their experiences with us. Elliot, who is contesting to represent the Surulere 1 constituency in the Lagos House of Assembly, expressed happiness with his victory in the primaries. For him, the victory is a confirmation of the trust the people and leaders of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), repose in him.

While admitting that politics is stressful, he was quick to add that he is delighted to offer himself for the service of his people. “It’s quite stressful. But I bless God for giving me the opportunity to serve the people. Though it is a different terrain, but it is not too far from the kind of jobs we do in the movies, especially in terms of the stress that we encounter; you know that you still have to deal with people. But politics is something that comes from your heart, so you cannot complain about the stress. I am glad to be counted worthy of being a candidate of my great party.”

Interestingly, Elliot’s romance with politics did not just start yesterday. While most people would want to believe that he, like most entertainers, was attracted to politics in a bandwagon effect, he disclosed that his interest in politics was began during the MKO Abiola crisis in 1993.

“I think I have been involved in politics all my life. It was born from the MKO period. I have always been interested in politics. I started nursing this ambition about seven years ago. It is something that has always been dear to me.”

On his choice for a parliamentary role, Elliot said: “Firstly, it is the fact that you can make laws and still reach out to your people. You know that the executive is purely reaching out, but in the assembly, you can influence law-making, which goes a long way in helping you to decide what path of development your people would take.”

His involvement in politics is not something he sees as ending any time soon. “When it comes to growth, it is always good to start from the scratch, learn the ropes and climb higher. So, the assembly is a good place to start and prove yourself. It is a student in form one in a secondary school. For me, being young and vibrant, I think there is a lot that I can offer. I am in a position where I can inspire a lot of youths by the time I start to achieve and being of good service to the people.”

    funke adesiyan
    funke adesiyan

Beautiful actress, Funke Adesiyan, is very hopeful of becoming the first female Nigerian entertainer to be elected into a state parliament in the country. Adesiyan, who is contesting for the Ibadan South East constituency on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), described her clinching the ticket to represent her party as a responsibility on her shoulders.

While expressing happiness with the prospect of becoming a lawmaker, the actress said she feels responsible for party members who gave her their votes. “I would say winning the primary election is a sign of responsibility on my shoulders. It means more work. Yes, it is true that I am happy, but I have not forgotten the fact that I owe those who voted for me to represent them the responsibility of good representation.”

With the primary election victory behind her, Adesiyan said her attention has shifted to the general elections. “While I keep being me, we have shifted the gear to next month’s general elections. That has been keeping us very busy.”

She refuted claims that she is a new entrant into politics. “My entry into politics is not something that is sudden. It is something that I have been doing for a long time. It is vying for political office that is new. If you recall, I was part of the presidential campaign team of Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau. I played a major role in the campaign.”

Being an active politician, Funke Adesiyan says, will not put an end to her acting career. “I have always said that film-making in my hobby. It is something that I like to do; it is not my job. Filming is something I do when I have the time. Aside politics, I am also a businesswoman. That is what I do to earn my living.”

Speaking on her plans, she said giving back to the society has always been something of interest to her. She confessed to The Nation that her confidence is boosted by the fact that she is the only female and the youngest among the contestants. “My people, especially the women, are happy with me. I am also the youngest and the only female contesting in my constituency. So, the women and the youths have been very supportive of my ambition. Our fathers and mothers are also impressed with me.”

Another popular actress, Shola Onayiga, is hoping to represent Ikorodu constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). For her, the need for more robust contributions to governance was the driving factor in her getting involved in politics.

“In life, we cannot continue to sit down and complain about what some people are not doing right. We need to come out to contribute our own quota to the development of the country.”

Long before she entered into politics, Onayiga said she had always taken care of the youths around here within the limit of her capability. “If you look round, you’ll see many youths roaming the streets without jobs. In my own little way, I have always been involved with these youths, helping them acquire skills that will keep them off the streets.”

Onayiga is sad that governments at all levels in the country have failed to see the economic value of the nation’s movie industry. According to her, “The movie industry is one of the largest employers of labour in the country. We have people who are professionals in different fields in the industry. You have doctors, lawyers and other professionals who earn their livings through acting. Imagine what would happen if the government would invest in this industry and make it work properly.”

She is also out to prove a point. For her, it is wrong for anybody to view an entertainer as a no-do-well. “Some people still believe that actors and actresses are drop-outs. But it is not true, most of us are graduates in different fields. Don’t forget that we all gained admission into the university with the same requirements. For anybody to see us as drop-outs is not only funny, but also nonsense.”

As Nigerians wait eagerly for next month’s general elections, entertainers across the country would hope their representatives in the elections will run a successful race that will open more doors for them in future elections.

  • Sokoto Assembly candidates battle to retain APC tickets

Sokoto Assembly candidates battle to retain APC tickets

Two candidates for the Sokoto State House of Assembly election are battling to hold on to their party tickets following moves by various groups in their constituencies to substitute their names ahead of the general elections.

Abdulwahab Yahaya and Abdullahi Zakari from Goronyo and Rabah State Constituencies, are facing challenges over their qualifications to contest the election.

A group, Sokoto Stakeholders Forum, has already petitioned the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) urging them to stop both Yahaya and Zakari from contesting the election.

Similarly, the group said it would launch a legal battle to deny the duo the chance to run.

Speaking to reporters in Sokoto yesterday, one of the petitioners, Musa Abdullahi Mafara, said the two candidates are disqualified from contesting the elections because they do not have the necessary educational qualifications.

According to him, the two candidates also stand disqualified because they are not registered members of the APC as required by the party’s constitution.

  • Dickson, lawmakers clash over return tickets

Dickson, lawmakers clash over return tickets

Senators and House of Representatives members from Bayelsa State are at loggerheads with Governor Seriake Dickson over zoning.

The crisis was said to have been triggered by a statement by the pioneer state Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Charles Dorgu, at a rally in Sagbama last week.

Dorgu was quoted to have said that the state chapter had zoned the three senatorial seats and the five House of Reps seats to areas outside the lawmakers’ wards.

He was also quoted to have insisted that the tickets would be zoned for two terms with Sagbama producing the senator for Bayelsa West and Ekeremor producing the House of Rep member.

The senators affected by the controversial zoning formula include Emmanuel Paulker (Bayelsa Central); Heineken Lokpobiri (Bayelsa West) and Clever Ikisikpo (Bayelsa East).

Their counterparts in the House of Representatives are Foingha Jephthah (Nembe/Brass); Henry Ofongo (Southern Ijaw); Warman Ogoriba (Yenegoa/Kolokuma-Opokumo); Dr Stella Dorgu (Sagbama/Ekeremor) and Nadu Karibo (Ogbia).

Stakeholders from Ekeremor and Sagbama in Bayelsa West have kicked against the move, describing it as an attempt to cause disaffection among the people.

At a meeting in Yenagoa, the state capital, the stakeholders insisted that the 26 electoral wards in Bayelsa West had ceded the ticket to Lokpobiri.

Convener of the meeting and group leader Dennis Daunemighan was quoted to have said that the zoning arrangement being canvassed was divisive and inciting.

He said: “The decision on who represents Bayelsa West at the National Assembly, particularly the Senate, should be informed by cognate experience, proven track record of competence, capacity to attract infrastructural development and ability to bring about robust perspective to help stabilise the polity at this crucial period of our national history.”

A party chieftain, Abeke Ebikake, said Sagbama had produced three senators.

He listed them as Felix Obaro, Diffa Emmanuel and John Braibaifa, adding that Ekeremor had served only twice.

“The pronouncement that the senatorial seat should go to Sagbama again is wrong. It is not proper.”

    • Imoke reduces prices to N500, N3, 000 and N5, 000

NationSportcan report that tickets for Saturday’s 2015 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Red Devils of Congo will go on sale today at the designated points of sale.

Cross River State commissioner for sports, Patrick Ugbe, who made this disclosure to NationSport yesterday, said the state’s governor, Liyel Imoke, had even reduced the prices of the tickets so as to give more fans the opportunity to cheer the Eagles on Saturday.

According to him, tickets for the popular side will go for N500, covered stand N3, 000 while the state box extension tickets will be sold for N5, 000 as against the N1, 000, N4, 000 and N5, 000 they were sold for in previous matches.

“The tickets will go on sale from tomorrow (today) at the designated sale points. The good thing is that the executive governor has asked us to reduce the prices of the tickets being the first match the team will play in the state this year, so that more fans will be able to come en mass to the stadium to support the Eagles on Saturday,” Ugbe told NationSport.

He also revealed that preparations are in place for a successful hosting of the match on Saturday.

“On our own part, we’ve doing all that is expected of us in ensuring that we have a smooth game on Saturday. I think everything is ready on our part and we are ready to host the best game as usual on Saturday,” Ugbe said.
