Woods ties for 9th as Fowler wins with 61

Tiger Woods proved he could be competitive again after playing some of the best golf of his comeback with a final-round four-under 68 to tie for ninth at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas on Sunday.

No one could match Rickie Fowler though. The world number nine birdied his first seven holes and won the elite event by four strokes thanks to a course record 11-under par 61 that left him at 18-under 270.

Woods was 10 strokes back but he had plenty of smiles as he answered the question of how he would do in his first tournament in nearly 10 months following spinal fusion surgery.

Pain free, the former world number one struck for six birdies and an eagle at the Albany course before two closing bogeys.

He also had a double bogey in the elite 18-man event that featured eight of the world’s top 10.

“I showed some good signs,” Woods told NBC Sports after finishing the four days at eight-under 280.

“I hit some really good shots out there (and am ready for) a bright future…. and no pain.”

The latter was especially important to the 41-year-old who once dominated the sport.

“I’ve had some tough times through the years with my back and then finally to come out on the good side and (be) able to get back out there and play. It’s pretty cool,” he said.

He also spoke positively about the future.

“When I was struggling with my back, the world seemed very small. Day to day stuff was very difficult for me to do,” Woods said.

“Now I am able to sit back and enjoy it a little bit more… It’s been really nice.”

He and his team will now sit down to determine how best to build his 2018 schedule for major championships.

“Play enough, but not play too much,” Woods said.

“I don’t know what golf courses I will be playing, what’s the best way to go about it. …We’ll figure it out.”

He definitely had the Albany course figured over the first nine holes on Sunday.

The day after a bogey-filled front nine, Woods showed flashes of his old self with three birdies and an eagle to make the turn at five-under 31.

Reality returned at 10 where he had a double-bogey at the par-four hole. But the 79 times PGA Tour winner struck back with birdies at 11, 14 and 15 before bogeys at 17 and 18.

Fowler was looking at a seven-stroke deficit when he began his round, but seven straight birdies and another at the ninth put him in front at the turn, which he made in eight-under 28.

He added three more birdies on the back nine for a sizzling, bogey-free round.

“I knew I needed to get off to a quick start today to at least show (overnight leader) Charley Hoffman) I was there,” Fowler said.

“We took care of that and kept it rolling.”

Hoffman, who started the day with a five-stroke lead, shot 72 and faded to second at 274. England’s Tommy Fleetwood (67) and Jordan Spieth (69) tied for third at 12-under 276.

Tiger Woods bags 12 months’ probation

Tiger Woods has been sentenced to 12 months of probation  after pleading guilty to reckless driving in connection with his arrest on May 29, when Florida police found him unconscious behind the wheel of his Mercedes-Benz.

Woods will be required to take a diversion program, pay a $250 fine and court costs, perform 20 hours of community service, attend DUI School, and attend a workshop where victims of impaired drivers discuss how their lives were damaged by impaired driving.

He will also be asked to take regular drug tests.

Woods was arrested on May 29 in Jupiter, Florida on charges of DUI, reckless driving, and improper stopping. Toxicology reporters released by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office showed Woods had several pain killers, anxiety calmer Xanax, a sleeping pill, and the active ingredient in marijuana, THC, in his system

Woods has been out of action since the Dubai Desert Classic in February, but his doctors did recently clear him to play following back surgery

Palm Beach County’s First Time Offender pre-trial program allows DUI charges to be vacated with a guilty plea to misdemeanor reckless driving, according to FelonyFlorida.com.

Deputy State Attorney Richard Clausi, who oversees the county’s misdemeanor prosecutions, said that less than 1 percent of the program’s participants have reoffended. He said the key has been getting offenders to take responsibility for their actions without requiring a trial and making sure they complete the program.

Woods issued a statement in August saying he had been self-medicating for pain caused by his fourth back surgery and insomnia. He did not specifically address the marijuana issue. None was found in his possession.

‘I realize now it was a mistake to do this without medical assistance,’ Woods said then. He completed a drug treatment program in July.

Woods’ attorney, Douglas Duncan, did not respond to phone calls and emails seeking comment about Wednesday’s hearing.

The DUI arrest was the first time Woods had been in trouble since Thanksgiving weekend 2009, when he plowed his SUV into a tree and a fire hydrant outside his then-Windermere, Florida, home. That led to revelations that he had multiple extramarital affairs, and a divorce from his wife Elin Nordegren, the mother of his two children. He spent 45 days in a Mississippi clinic where he was treated for sex addiction.

Though he has been a non-factor on the PGA Tour, Forbes Magazine lists Woods as the 17th best-paid athlete in the world in 2017, making $37 million, almost exclusively from endorsements.

  • Biafra, Democracy Day dominate Google search

Biafra, Democracy Day dominate Google search

Nigerians took to Google during the week to know more about Biafra and the history of democracy in Africa’s most populous nation.

Google’s Spokesman Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade made the announcement in Lagos on Thursday.

Kola-Ogunlade, who is Google’s Communications and Public Affairs Manager for Anglophone West Africa, said the searches were apparently to know more about Biafra.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some groups observed a sit-at-home protest on May 30, to commemorate the 50th anniversary since the Biafra uprising ended.

Kola-Ogunlade said that Nigerians searched for Democracy Day, Biafra News, Biafra Day, Tiger Woods, Ernesto Valverde and Paul Pogba in the search engine.

According to him, a group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has rejected May 29 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day, describing it as fraudulent, unrealistic and escapist.

“The group asked the Federal Government to declare June 12 as Democracy Day instead.

“May 29 was chosen by the last military regime of Gen. Abdul Salaam Abubakar.

“Nigerian researched more on the topic on Google search using the terms: ‘when is democracy day in Nigeria.’

The spokesman said that Nigerians also searched for: “why do we celebrate democracy day in Nigeria.

“History of democracy day in Nigeria and democracy day 2017”.

The searches commenced on May 25 and ended on May 31.

Kola-Ogunlade said there was total shutdown in Nigeria’s South East on May 30, following the Indigenous People of Biafra’s sit-at-home order.

He said that the order was to mark the 50th anniversary of the declaration of the defunct Republic of Biafra and also to honour heroes and heroines of the liberation struggle.

The Google chief said that the sit-at-home order was totally complied with in the five states in the South East.

Kola-Ogunlade explained that people searched Google using terms such as ‘Biafra news today’, ‘Biafra latest news’, ‘radio Biafra news’ and ‘radio Biafra’.

The spokesman said that Golf superstar, Tiger Woods’ arrest and charge for Driving Under the Influence (DUI) by the police in Florida on May 29 also trended on Google.

He said that the former golf world number one had to deal with a fresh blow as he struggled to resurrect his career.

“Nigerians went on Google to search for ‘Tiger Woods net worth’, ‘Tiger Woods arrested’, ‘Tiger Woods news’, ‘DUI’ and ‘Serena Williams’.

The Google chief said that Barcelona FC President, Josep Bartomeu, on May 29 officially confirmed the appointment of Ernesto Valverde as the club’s new head coach, replacing Luis Enrique.

Kola-Ogunlade said that sports fanatics Googled ‘Ernesto Valverde profile’, ‘Barcelona’, ‘Who is Ernesto Valverde’ and ‘Barcelona new coach.’

He also said that Paul Pogba’s visit to Mecca to give thanks for a good season trended on Google.

“Paul Pogba visited Islam’s holiest city, Mecca this week to pray and offer his appreciation for a successful season with Manchester United and to mark the beginning of Ramadan.

“Nigerians visited Google to search ‘Paul Pogba religion’, ‘Is Paul pogba a Muslim’, ‘Paul Pogba profile’ and ‘Paul Pogba biography’,” Kola-Ogunlade said.

Google Trends launched in May, 2006, allows one to see how popular search terms and their demography have been overtime on the search engine.

  • ‘More trouble for Tiger in the Woods’

‘More trouble for Tiger in the Woods’

Tiger Woods could lose hundreds of millions of dollars following his early morning DUI arrest in Florida, claim sports experts.

The fallen golfing star currently earns $45.5M-a-year alone in sponsorship money – including more than $20m from his mega-bucks Nike contract – but following his latest public humiliation the 41-year-old could lose lucrative endorsements.

Despite some standing by him following his much publicized marriage breakup amid rampant infidelity and subsequent loss of form, observers believe backers such as Rolex and Bridgestone may re-examine their relationship with the 14-time Major winner.

And to add insult to injury for Woods it is thought that Florida cops will release highly embarrassing dashcam footage of his 3am arrest on Tuesday, during which officers claimed the star – who is worth $740m – was ‘arrogant’.

And before Woods broke his silence with a statement regarding the arrest on Monday evening some of the notorious womanizer’s ex-mistresses came to his defense.

Model Coris Rist, who had a six-month affair with the golfer in 2006 when he was married to Elin Nordegren said that the news of his arrest was ‘kind of sad’ and that he ‘was going through a difficult time’.

Furthermore, TMZ claimed that his current girlfriend, Kristin Smith found out about the arrest while shopping at a Neiman Marcus store in Dallas and ‘went crazy’, began crying and said ‘I knew it, I knew it’.

TMZ then claims Smith – who is the ex-wife of former Dallas Cowboys safety Gerald Sensabaught – spent $5,000 in the store after crying and then left.

Their relationship has survived his Thanksgiving Day scandal in 2009 when he crashed his car fleeing his home following a National Enquirer story that revealed his affairs and ultimately ended his marriage.

Other big money backers of the sportsman are Bridgestone Golf who he has signed a golf ball deal with and TaylorMade Golf, who provide him with clubs.

In addition, he has lucrative deals with Rolex, Japanese pharmaceutical company Kowa and Indian motorcycle maker Hero.

One Forbes sports industry expert predicts that following this latest debacle Woods will lose at least three of his big-name contracts and can expect to see his income drop by at least $20m-per-year.

However, they claim that his key endorsement from Nike will probably survive due to the length of their relationship.

Some of his haters are not going soft on him in this difficult period as they have taken to the internet to mock his drink driving arrest saga

Tiger Woods arrested for driving offence

Tiger Woods was taken into custody this morning on suspicion  for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in Jupiter, Florida. The legendary golfer was however released from custody on his own recognizance at 10:50 am.

Woods had been hopeful of playing in this year’s Masters tournament, on the 20th anniversary of his first win at Augusta in 1997, but lasted only five minutes in a practice session designed to prove he was fit to take part.

There have been previous reports of Woods’ drunken driving problems as well. The ace golfer, in 2009 had crashed his car into a tree, while reportedly driving under influence. However, he was not charged with a DUI back then.

Tiger Woods out for 6 Months, had 4th back surgery

Golf legend, Tiger Woods underwent another back surgery, his fourth in four years.

“The surgery went well, and I’m optimistic this will relieve my back spasms and pain,” Woods said. “When healed, I look forward to getting back to a normal life, playing with my kids, competing in professional golf and living without the pain I have been battling so long.”

According the website, Woods will now rest “for several weeks” before beginning therapy and treatment. TigerWoods.com also said that patients typically need six months to “return to full activity.”

Woods returned to the PGA Tour this season after more than a year away from professional golf. He played in two events before withdrawing from a tournament in Dubai after just one round. He later cancelled an appearance at a press conference for the Genesis Open which is hosted by his foundation.

In each case back spasms were cited as the reason, and his agent said they were unrelated to the recent back problems that kept him out of competitive golf for more than a year.

In March, Tour veteran Steve Stricker, who worked with Woods during last year’s Presidents Cup, told The Golf Channel that he had recently communicated with Tiger through texts saying he didn’t think Woods was “doing that well right now physically.”

Even before the surgery, Stricker was not optimistic we would see Woods on the course anytime soon.

“Obviously he has to get his body right first before he can compete,” Stricker said. “Then it’s going to take some time I think for him to come back believing in his swing and trusting in his ability again.”

  • I will never feel great again, says Tiger Woods

I will never feel great again, says Tiger Woods

Former world golf number one Tiger Woods has accepted that he will “never feel great’’ again after suffering a number of back and knee injuries in recent years.

The 14-times major champion returned to action in December following a 15-month layoff but was forced to pull out of the Dubai Desert Classic last week.

After playing in the first round of the event, he withdrew due to a back spasm.

“There were a lot of times I didn’t think I was going to make it back. It was tough, it was more than brutal,” Woods said.

The 41-year-old American has racked up 79 PGA Tour victories in his career but has not won a major championship since 2008.

“There have been plenty of times when I thought I would never play the game again at the elite level,’’ Woods, ranked 674th in the world, said.

“It was tough, it was more than brutal. There were times I needed help just to get out of bed.

“I feel good, not great. I don’t think I will ever feel great because it’s three back surgeries, four knee operations,” he added.

  • Woods out of Dubai Desert Classic with “bad back’’

Woods out of Dubai Desert Classic with “bad back’’

Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the Dubai Desert Classic before the second round because of a “bad back’’, the European Tour said in a statement on Friday.

The 14-time major winner only returned to action in December after 15 months out following two back operations.

The 41-year-old Woods struggled in the first round in Dubai as he shot a five-over 77 and failed to register a birdie. He pulled out before his second round.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the American went into the tournament having missed the cut in his previous outing at Torrey Pines in San Diego.

Woods had won the Dubai tournament twice before but was 12 shots behind overnight leader Sergio Garcia after day one.

“I wasn’t in pain at all. I was just trying to hit shots and I wasn’t doing a very good job,’’ Woods said after his opening round.

His agent Mark Steinberg said the American suffered a back spasm on Thursday night but was told by Woods that it was not “the nerve pain that’s kept him out for so long’’.

Steinberg explained: “He feels terrible for the tournament. He wants to be here. He can move around. He can’t make a full rotation on the swing.

“The fact he feels it’s not the nerve pain is very encouraging for him. He’s had some spasms before, no doubt about it.

“The short-term prognosis, he thinks, hopefully will be strong, based on the fact it’s not that nerve pain I just alluded to.

“He doesn’t have the strongest back in the world so it’s probably easier to spasm because of the issues he’s had.’’

Woods’ first return to competitive action after his lengthy lay-off came at the Hero World Challenge — an 18-man tournament in the Bahamas — in December.

The former world number one finished 15th at the PGA Tour event.

Afterwards, he had expressed concerns over the physical challenge of being scheduled to play four full-field tournaments over the next five weeks.

His next outing came at the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines where a first round 76 and level-par second round of 72 meant he missed the cut.

His next two tournaments were to be the Genesis Open at Riviera from Feb. 16 to Feb. 19 and the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens from Feb. 23 to Feb. 26.

But his participation now appears in doubt.

Woods, who has won 79 titles on the PGA Tour, has not won a tournament anywhere since 2013, while his title drought in the major championships dates back to 2008.

Nigeria Striker, Kelechi Iheanacho has been dropped by Manchester City to the B-list lof the UEFA Champions Leage but could still feauture in the competition.

  • Tiger uncertain about return

    Tiger uncertain about return

World number one Tiger Woods said Monday he is making very slow progress recovering from surgery for a pinched nerve and unsure when he will make his return to golf.

Woods updated his status in a blog posting on his website, saying he remains sore after the operation and regrets not being able to defend his title this week at the US PGA Players Championship.

“It’s tough to miss any tournament, but especially one that’s so important to the players and where I’m defending,” Woods said.

Woods has been unable to resume his workout regimen because of the March 31 operation, which kept him from playing in last month’s Masters, the first major championship of the year.

“My recovery from microdiscectomy surgery for a pinched nerve in my back is coming along, but it’s a very slow process,” Woods said. “I’m still sore, not from the procedure itself but the incision. I just need to get back to my day-to-day activities and that’s it.”

Woods, a 14-time major champion chasing the all-time record of 18 won by Jack Nicklaus, cast doubt upon his ability to play in next month’s US Open at Pinehurst, North Carolina, in listing potential timetables for his return.

“As for my return to golf, I really don’t know,” Woods said. “I’m doing everything I can and listening to my doctors and working on a strength program and then we just have to see how my back is.

“Some people heal up in three months, some people take four months, some people take longer. I just don’t know.”

The earliest of those spans would bring him back in time for the British Open at Hoylake, where Woods has won before.
