Actress Tina Mba urges colleagues to choose supportive partners, prioritise career goals

Veteran actress Tina Mba has urged her colleagues in the entertainment industry to be mindful when choosing life partners, warning that signs of future career limitations often appear before marriage.

Speaking from personal experience, Mba emphasised the importance of open conversations about career aspirations before tying the knot.

She suggested that couples consider signing an “undertaking” to affirm mutual understanding and support for each other’s professional goals.

The actress stressed the value of staying true to oneself and choosing a partner who encourages growth, rather than one who demands compromise at the expense of ambition.

“Marriage should not be the end of your dreams,” she said, encouraging women to prioritise their careers and never let marriage hinder their personal or professional development.

Promoting self-worth and individuality, Mba described herself as an “antique babe,” urging women to embrace their uniqueness, love themselves deeply, and seek validation from within, not from society.

Speaking in a recent episode of Lights, Camera – It’s My Turn, Mba said, “He met you as an actor, he married you as an actor, there was no issue of you are going to leave this job because I am insecure or because we need to raise our children. No discussion or whatever. Then you got married thinking that now you are going to fly, and then the man comes and tells you, ‘No, you’re going to sit.’

“See, the signs are always there. Don’t ignore it. Watch him, watch her. You need to discuss with the person. If need be, you need to sign an undertaking that you will not make me leave my career. Did he leave his job?

“Marriage is important, but nobody put a gun to my head or to your head to do it. There are so many people in this world. If this didn’t work, another may work. You will meet a soul mate, someone who will be supportive. Just be true to yourself. Don’t go for the dazzles, be an antique babe like me”.

  • TINA MBA: I’M A BORN AGAIN CHRISTIAN, A WARRIOR WIFE ON HER KNEES

TELL us about your role in this movie…

I’m Regina Timi, I’m a born again Christian; a praying wife, warrior wife on her knees. My husband, Timi, played by Zack Orji, is a bloody pensioner who actually lost his path in life. I’m speaking from the Mama Christian point of view. He has two best friends and they are together in the same boat of life. Regina and Timi have been married for 35 years. They love each other quite right, but midlife crisis sets in after the husband’s retirement. And that’s where they have found themselves. The good thing about it is that you lose your path and you allowed yourself to be led back into the light. It’s fantastic. These things happen every day; old men trying to re-discover themselves. But then they forget that this is not the 60s, 70s or 80s; that it’s a different time, a different temperament, different in every way. And how do you begin to fit in to this age? So you look physically ridiculous, mentally retarded; because you have to be retarded to want to be sagging and wearing bling bling… it is deeper than that.

    Is it a gospel movie?

It is a faith based story. It would inspire you to think. It would make you reflect. People in their late 40s, 50s and 60s can identify with this. They would look at it some would have smiles and some would actually roar in laughter. Because it’s a reminder, because we have those three wise men in every body. Once you cross 40, you become those people. The things you didn’t have begin to appeal to you, meanwhile they were never meant for you.

Opa Williams is known for comedy, are there elements of comedy in this film?

This is comedy really. It is comedy of errors (Laughs)

You’ve been on set for a while now, how would you appraise the script, the production, everything?

For me, it’s international level. My experience on other international sets is what I’m experiencing here really. If there are challenges, it’s not anything out of this world. It’s what you find in productions. Nothing is perfect. For me, it’s fine.

Tina Mba to celebrities: if you can’t stay married, don’t go into it

Notable Nollywood actress, Tina Mba, has advised celebrities who are not prepared to stay married not to venture into it. Speaking as a celebrity guest on Jara recently, the Delta State-born actress and single mother, who has been involved in stage productions and films for over two decades, said: “I have two lovely children.  But what I know about marriage is that it is an institution laid down by God, so it is sacred. What I tell people is that if you can’t stay married, please, do not go into it.

“Marriage is a burden; it is a huge responsibility. If you are not ready for it, don’t go there. Marriage is not about having a lavish ceremony. But it is about you and what you truly feel and how you tend to make it work. What I am saying is that if you can’t keep it together, don’t venture into it. People marry for different reasons. If you are an actress, a wife and a mother, you should know your responsibility is more. Because you are married, you cannot go on a movie set and start giving excuses. You know you will be losing your jobs little by little. The directors understand, so they will be giving you slacks. You do not have to kiss and hug all the time.”
