  • Suspected fake soldiers ‘harass, extort money from traders’

    A Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court yesterday granted N500,000 bail each to two men charged with impersonating soldiers to harass and extort money from Ajah market traders.

    Chief Magistrate Tajudeen Elias also ordered  Cornelius Edet, 37, and Moseri Udoka, 23, to provide two sureties each as part of their bail conditions.

    He directed that one of the sureties should be a relative of the defendants and the other, a community leader.

    Edet and Udoka appeared before the court on a three-count charge of conspiracy, impersonation and unlawful possession of army uniform.

    They pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Hafsat Ajibode said the defendants committed the offence on March 4 at Ajah market, Lagos.

    She alleged that the defendants wore army uniform with which they paraded themselves as soldiers.

    Ajibode said the duo wore army camouflage, harassed and extorted money from the traders.

    She said the defendants were sighted by patrolling soldiers, who approached them and requested for their identity cards.

    “Edet and Udoka, who had no means of identification, were discovered to be fake, and they were apprehended,” the prosecutor said.

    The case continues on April 11.

     

  • Ex-baker docked for stealing 135 loaves of bread

    A baker, Chima Okoro, who allegedly broke into the bakery he worked in and stole 135 loaves of bread and N80,000 on Wednesday appeared in a Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court.
    The police, charged the accused who resides at No. 4, Otua Street, Ijora 7up, Lagos on two counts of theft, breaking and entry .
    The prosecutor, Sgt Hafsat Ajibode told the court that the accused committed the offence on Nov. 7, at 2 a.m. at Kilometre 45 Lekki/Epe Expressway,  Sangotedo Lagos.
    She said that the accused, an ex employee  of Daily Mama Bread Industry broke into the bakery and stole 135 loaves of bread worth  N30,000; and also stole N80,000 all valued at N110,000.
    The prosecutor told the court that Okoro, who was laid off after a shortage of N80,000 was discovered in his sales proceed, absconded.

    “He later came back, broke into the bakery and stole 135 loaves of bread of different size from the bakery and was caught by a security guard,” she said.
    The offence, she said contravened the provisions of Sections 287 and 309 (1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
    If convicted under Section 287, the accused is liable to three years imprisonment while Section 309 (1) prescribes seven years imprisonment for anyone found guilty.
    After the charges were read to him, Okoro, pleaded not guilty.
    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety  in like sum.
    Elias ordered that the surety must be a responsible citizen and gainfully employed.
    He  adjourned the case until Nov. 27 for mention.
  • Man, docked over dogs’ eating neighbour’s poultry

    A 49-year-old, Paul Ajibola, whose five dogs allegedly ate up his neighbour’s 30 chickens and turkeys valued at N100,000, was on Friday brought before a Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    The accused is facing a four-count charge bordering on breach of peace, refusal to take precautions to prevent his dogs from causing damage to lives and property of neighbour.
    Ajibola, however, pleaded innocence of the offences.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Hafsat Ajibode, told the court that the incident occurred between January and July, at No. 32 ,Oyinkan Abayomi Drive, Ikoyi, Lagos. 
     
    She said that the accused, who owned the dogs — a German Shepard, a Tamaya (South African breed) and three of their cross breed puppies — refused to erect a cage for them. 
     
    Ajibode said that the dogs had been dangerous, wild to neighbours and had been destroying their property.
    She said that the dogs ate up 30 chickens and turkeys valued at N100,000, property of his neighbour, Mr Samaila Khalif.
    The prosecutor said that the dogs had become terror to residents because of their violent barking and threats to them.
    “Once it is dark, residents cannot take their garbage out or go to their generator house to switch on their generators,” she said.
    The offences contravened Sections 168, 251, 350 and 394 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, granted the accused a bail of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.
    Elias said that the surety must show evidence of tax payment, and adjourned the case until Aug. 16 for mention.
  • Banker arraigned for swindling customers of N13.6m

    A 29-year-old banker, Kolawole Agboola, was on Friday appeared in a Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing N13.6 million belonging to two customers of Access Bank Plc, Lagos Island.

    The accused, who resides at 4, Johnson Ikuomola St.in Idimu, Lagos is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, fraud and theft.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Hafsat Ajibode, told the court that the accused committed the offences between October 2017 and March 2018.

    Ajibode said that the accused withdrew the money from the unnamed customers’ accounts by issuing a forged investment certificate to them to conceal his fraudulent activities.

    Agbola pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The Chief Magistrate, Mr Tajudeen Elias, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He said one of the sureties must be a relative of the accused and the other, a civil servant.

    He adjourned the case until Aug. 16 for hearing.

    The offences contravened Sections 287 (7), 325 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Section 287 (7) stipulates seven years imprisonment for offenders.

    Security guard in court over alleged rape of 15-year-old half-sister

    A 36-year-old man, Henry Asuquo, alleged to have raped his 15-year-old half-sister, was arraigned at a Tinubu Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on Wednesday.

    The accused, a security guard, who resides at Saint Saviour St., Sura, Lagos Island, is facing a two-count charge of rape and sexual harassment and assault.

    The prosecutor, Insp. Nurudeen Thomas, told the court that the offences were committed between March, 2013 and June, 2017 at the apartment of the accused.

    He said that the victim had been staying with her half-brother of same mother since she was brought to Lagos from the village at the age of five.

    The alleged said that the accused had been sexually assaulting the girl ever since she was 11 years.

    “The accused had been sexually assaulting the girl on different occasions whenever his wife was not around, raping her and having anal sex with her.

    “When the girl started reaching adolescent she started fighting back; since then the accused would beat her to a pulp for any slight mistake.

    “On June 11, when he tried raping her again, the 15-year-old grabbed his scrotum.

    “While he was writhing in pain, she had the opportunity to run to the nearest police station to report,” Thomas told the court.

    He said that the offences contravened Sections 263 and 264 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised)

    The accused pleaded innocence of the offences.

    In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Kikelomo Ayeye, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N1 million, with two sureties each in like sum.

    She adjourned the case until July 5 for mention.
