  • Suspected phone thief to know fate July 18

    A Tinubu Magistrates’ Court on Monday ordered that a 21-year-old man, Wasiu Sosun, be remanded in prison pending his sentencing for allegedly stealing two cell phones from a mosque.

    Magistrate A.M. Olumide-Fusika gave the order after Sosun’s guilty plea.

    Olumide-Fusika ordered that Sosun be remanded in Ikoyi prison, until July 18.

    Prosecuting Inspector Ben Ekundayo said the defendant committed the offence on June 28, at Kuti Mosque, Lagos Island.

    He said the defendant entered into the mosque and stole two mobile phones valued at N8,000 from two people.

    “Wasiu who also pretended to be praying in the mosque crept beside two people who are praying, stole their phones and bolted out of the mosque.

    “Some people ran after him and caught him before he could escape,” Ekundayo said.

  • Hoodlum bags four years for stabbing welder

    A Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Monday sentenced a man, John Koffi, to four years imprisonment for stabbing a welder with a broken bottle.

    Magistrate A.M Olumide-Fusika convicted Koffi, 21, after he pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of assault occasioning grievous harm.

    Before the sentence, the court heard that Koffi broke into Mr Nsikkan Okon’s workshop with the intent to steal and stabbed him while trying to escape.

    She held: “I hereby sentence the defendant to four years imprisonment.

    “The defendant should learn a skill that he so pleases and the prison authorities should keep a close watch on him”.

    Reviewing the case, prosecuting Inspector Ben Ekundayo said Koffi, of Mobil Road, Ajah, Lagos, committed the offence at about 3am on May 20, at Thomas Estate, Ajah.

    He said Okon, a welder, observed that some unknown persons had been entering his workshop and stealing his work tools.

    “The complainant stood guard in his workshop overnight and saw Koffi scaling the fence into the shop to steal his tools.

    “When the defendant saw Okon, he attacked him with a broken bottle and stabbed him repeatedly on his right hand and chest,” Ekundayo said.

  • Man assaults Neighbourhood Watch official

    A Tinubu Magistrates’ Court on Monday heard that a 23-year-old man, Ahmed Ishola, bit off the lower lip and tongue of a Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LSNSC) official.

    The police said Ishola committed the offence when the officer tried to stop him from beating up his girlfriend.

    They made the allegation during Ishola’s arraignment before Magistrate A.M Olumide-Fusika, on a two-count charge of assault and breach of peace.

    Prosecuting Inspector Ben Ekundayo said the defendant committed the offence on June 18 at about 8:30am, on Elegbata Street, Lagos Island.

    Ekundayo said: “The defendant was beating his girlfriend in front of Nawarudeen Central Mosque and the complainant tried to intervene but Ishola came at him with a broken bottle.

    “While wrestling to take the broken bottle from the defendant, he bit off the Neighbourhood Watch man’s lower lip and tongue causing him serious injury.”

    Mrs Olumide-Fusika granted Ishola N100,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She adjourned till August 9.

  • Plumber steals N150,000 pipes from employer

    A 26-year-old plumber, Paul Aduma, yesterday appeared at a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing 75 pieces of PVC plumbing pipes valued at N150,000.

    The pipes are said to belong to his employer Mr Sunday Nwazor.

    Aduma pleaded not guilty.

    Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Fidelis Dike alleged that the defendant committed the offence on January 16, around 4:15am, at Road I, Bakery bus stop, Badore, Ajah, Lagos.

    He said the defendant conspired with two other labourers (at large) to steal the pipes at a building site.

    Magistrate T. A. Anjorin-Ajose granted the defendant N50,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    Anjorin-Ajose said the sureties must be responsible and credible.

    The case continues on March 18.

  • One dead, two injured as tricycle rams into truck

    A Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday heard that a passenger lost his life and two others were injured when a tricycle rammed into a stationary truck at Ajah, on December 28, 2018.

    The police told Magistrate A.M. Olumide-Fusika that the truck driver, Mr Sesan Koiki, neglected to warn road users that his truck had broken down.

    Koiki, 29, was arraigned on a two-count charge of driving on the highway without a valid driver’s licence, and failure to display reflective caution signs.

    Prosecuting Inspector Ben Ekundayo alleged that Koiki committed the offences at about 10pm on December 28, at Pump and Sell, Ajah Road, in Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos.

    The court also heard that the defendant drove a Mack Truck with registration No. AAA 148 XD on the highway without a valid driver’s licence.

    It heard that Koiki allegedly caused the death of Mr John Aboti and injured two others by failing to place a reflective caution sign or other warning signs on the road after his vehicle broke down.

    Ekundayo said: “The driver left the truck which broke down in the middle of the road at night without placing any warning signs on the road to alert other road users.

    “The tricycle which the late Aboti boarded and sat in the front, rammed into the truck because the tricyclist did not see the truck in the middle of the road on time.

    “Aboti died on the spot while the tricyclist and one other passenger at the back sustained serious injuries.”

    According to him, the offences contravened Sections 7, 20 and 42 of the Road Traffic Act, Law of Lagos State, 2012.

    Koiki pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Olumide-Fusika granted him N100,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    The case was adjourned till January 11.

  • Four sales reps face N15m theft charge

    Four sales representatives on Friday appeared before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, over alleged theft of N15 million from their employer’s interior decoration store

    The accused – Afeez Adebayo, 30; Afeez Abdullahi, 30; David Ajayi, 43; and Nkiruka Chinedu, 35 – are facing a two-count of conspiracy and theft to which they pleaded not guilty.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Ben Ekundayo, the accused committed the offences from January 2017 to October 2018 on Holloway Street, Lagos Island.

    Ekundayo said that the accused sold some items from the store but failed to remit the money to their employer, Mrs Folashade Tokunbo-Esan.

    He listed the items to include flower vases, storage boxes, pillows, chairs, clocks and mirrors. Ekundayo said that the complainant, Tokunbo-Esan,   discovered the theft when during stock-taking.

    “She reported the case to the police, and the accused were arrested for questioning,” he said. The alleged offences contravene Sections 287 (7) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The Magistrate, Mrs A.M. Olumide-Fusika, granted the accused bail in the sum of N2 million each with two sureties each in like sum.

    Olumide-Fusika ordered that one of the sureties should be a relative of the accused and the other, a civil servant.

    The case was adjourned until Dec. 10 for trial.

  • Driver in court for alleged theft of employer’s truck

    A 21-year-old driver, David Uruwah, who allegedly disappeared with his employer’s truck on Wednesday appeared before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

    Uruwah, whose address was not provided, faces three-count charge of stealing, conduct likely to cause breach of peace and fraudulent conversion to which pleaded not guilty.

    The prosecutor, Insp Ben Ekundayo, said the accused committed the offences on Nov. 16, at Abel Sowo International Company Ltd,Tincan Island Apapa, Lagos.

    Ekundayo said that the accused disappeared with the company’s truck with Registration No. FFF 709 XA to unknown destination.

    “He was arrested two days later at Dosumu Market, Lagos Island with the truck.

    “The accused also failed to remit N85, 000 to the company’s account, instead he converted it to personal use,” he said.

    The offences contravened Section 56 (1), 287 and 323 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 56 stipulates one year imprisonment, while Section 287 provides seven-year jail term for offenders.

    In her ruling, the Magistrate, Mrs A. M. Olumide-Fusika, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500, 000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until Dec. 10 for hearing.

  • Three docked for obtaining bank loan with forged documents

    Three bank customers, who allegedly tendered forged documents to obtain N1.3 million loan, on Friday appeared before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court in  Lagos on a five-count charge.

    The accused are John Fashina, 26; Olawale Akinboro, 35; and Alexander Onwa, 44.

    The accused, whose addresses were not provided, were charged with conspiracy, obtaining money under false pretences, theft, forgery and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

    They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Prosecutor, Inspector Ben Ekundayo, told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 16 and Aug. 24, at Lekki, Lagos.

    Ekundayo said that Fashina and Akinboro – first and second accused – fraudulently obtained the loan from Oak Payday Solution Ltd. Loan Trust Microfinance Bank.

    He said that the third accused, Onwa, who had also applied for N3 million loan from the same bank but was denied because his documents were not authentic, orchestrated the forgery.

    He said that the accused forged Zenith Bank and Access Bank documents to obtain the loan.

    “Onwa, after his own failed attempt, told Fashina and Akinboro about it and organised how they got the forged documents which they tendered and got the loan.

    “The micro finance bank detected that the documents were not authentic when it was time to deduct money from the accounts; this led to their arrest,” he said.

    The offences contravene Sections 287, 315, 320, 363 and 411 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.

    Magistrate A.M. Olumide-Fusika granted each of the accused N500,000 bail with two sureties each in like sum.

    She ordered that one of the sureties must be a relation of the accused and the other, a civil servant.

    The case was adjourned until December 21 for trial.

  • Ex-convict faces another break-in charge

    A 25-year-old man, Musa Olumade, who had previously pleaded guilty to breaking into several houses and was sentenced to six months of community service, was on Monday again brought before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court on a similar charge.

    Olumade is facing a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy, burglary, unlawful entry and theft.

    He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and was admitted to bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

    The prosecutor, ASP Fidelis Dike, told the court that the accused committed the offences on

    July 23, at Alarape Street, Langbasa, Ajah, Lagos.

    He said that the accused conspired with others now at large to break into 12 houses, with the intent to steal.

    Dike added that the accused broke into the houses of Stephen Kogbe, Adewale Ashafa and Akeem Adeleke, and stole their phones, all valued at N160,000.

    “The accused, who was sentenced to six months community service on Feb. 3, went back to commit similar offences just twenty days after he finished his community service sentence.

    “Olumide was apprehended while his accomplices escaped,’’ Dike said.

    The offences contravened Sections 287, 307 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Section 287 provides for three years imprisonment, Section 307 stipulates seven years imprisonment, while Section 411 prescribes two years imprisonment for convicted offenders.

    The Magistrate, Mr Kazeem Omolaja, said that the accused must provide a surety who is gainfully employed and should be his blood relation.

    He adjourned the case until Aug. 16, for mention.

  • Saleswoman faces N5.2m frozen chicken theft charge

    A 30-year-old saleswoman, Blessing Abel, on Friday appeared in a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing 4,000 cartons of frozen chicken valued at N5.2 million, property of her employer.

    Abel is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, theft and forgery. She, however, pleaded innocence of the offences.

    But the Police Prosecutor, Insp. Ben Ekundayo insisted that the accused committed the offences on March 13 at Victoria Garden City (VGC), Lekki, Lagos.

    He alleged that the accused stole 4,000 cartons of frozen chicken valued at N5.2 million belonging to her employer, Mrs Benita Egbuchua.

    In addition, the accused also forged the invoice and receipt of Silver Stone Farm Ltd, where she is working, and issued the fake receipts to customers.

    “She also diverted the company’s money to her own account and when she was asked to account for proceeds from the sales, she claimed the customers had not paid.”

    The offences contravened Section 287 (7), 365 and 411 of the Criminal Law 2015.

    Magistrate Olumide Fusika granted the accused N1 million bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case until May 25.
