Obasa, Tinubu-Ojo lead fundraising art exhibition

Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly Mudashiru Obasa, and the Grand Host, Dr. Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, have announced plans for a landmark fundraising art exhibition aimed at establishing Bola Ahmed Tinubu Centre for Arts and Vocations (BATCAV).

The announcement was made yesterday at a news conference in Lagos, where stakeholders unveiled details of the exhibition scheduled to hold on February 5 at the Muson Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos. The exhibition is being curated by Artifact Galleries.

BATCAV is envisioned as a transformative national institution designed to empower over 100,000 Nigerians through arts, crafts and vocational training, while strengthening Nigeria’s creative economy and preserving its rich cultural heritage.

Speaking at the briefing, Obasa, who is the official host of the event, described the initiative as “a strategic investment in Nigeria’s creative economy and youth empowerment architecture.”

He said the Centre would bridge talent development with enterprise, promote cultural preservation, and further position Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s growing creative sector.

Dr. Tinubu-Ojo emphasised the broader national importance of the exhibition, noting that it goes beyond art display.

“This is not merely an art event, but a collective commitment to legacy, opportunity, and the preservation of our cultural memory,” she said.

She called on leaders, institutions and philanthropists to rally behind the project to build a Centre that would serve future generations.

The Event Chairman and Foundation Patron, Dr. Abbey Onas, reaffirmed his support for the initiative, highlighting BATCAV’s practical and sustainable framework.

According to him, the Centre will not only train participants, but also link graduates with financial institutions to access start-up capital immediately after training, creating a direct pathway from skill acquisition to sustainable livelihoods.

Also acknowledged at the news conference was Otunba Muraina Banjoko, the major supporter of the exhibition.

According to the organisers, BATCAV’s objectives include training over 100,000 Nigerians in arts and vocational skills; housing 1,000 portrait paintings of President Tinubu to document his journey from senator to president; preserving 5,000 artworks by Nigerian artists across all states; and showcasing 4,000 artworks by artists from across Africa, thereby positioning Nigeria as a continental cultural hub.

The organisers called on corporate organisations, cultural institutions and the public to participate in the exhibition and support the establishment of BATCAV, which they described as “a living archive, a training ground, and a launch pad for the future of African creativity.”

Tinubu-Ojo is a formidable force for change – World SDGs organisation boss

Dr. Fubes Ade Danor, Executive Director of the World Sustainable Development Goals Organisation (WSDGsO) for West Africa, has praised Dr. Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, the Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, as a formidable force for change and a beacon of resilience across the continent.

In a birthday felicitation message, Dr. Danor lauded Tinubu-Ojo’s passionate efforts toward fostering community growth and sustainable practices, particularly through her work with women traders.

“She has diligently worked to enhance the livelihoods of market women by promoting access to training, finance, and technology,” Danor said, noting that her initiatives are helping to close socio-economic gaps and empower grassroots communities.

Highlighting her dual role as the Africa Continental Grand Matron of WSDGsO, Danor commended her unwavering commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in the areas of trade, economic empowerment, and environmental sustainability.

“As Iyaloja-General, she champions trade and commerce initiatives that uplift local economies and empower women traders across West Africa. Her leadership perfectly aligns with the mission of WSDGsO to promote sustainability and a better quality of life for all,” he stated.

Danor concluded by affirming that the impact of Dr. Tinubu-Ojo’s contributions to sustainable development and women’s empowerment is profound and enduring.

“Her vision and dedication have significantly contributed to gender equality (SDG 5), economic growth (SDG 8), and reduced inequalities (SDG 10). The intersection of these goals signifies the importance of equitable access and opportunities for all people, regardless of their socioeconomic status.

“For instance, the United Nations (2015) emphasises that promoting gender equality and empowering women is not only critical for achieving the SDGs but catalyses broader development. Understanding this, Dr Tinubu-Ojo’s initiatives reflect a strategic approach towards balancing power dynamics in marketplaces and communities, ensuring that women’s voices are heard and valued.

“As a leader in the community, she has facilitated partnerships that result in practical training programs for women traders. These programs focus on enhancing skills in areas such as budgeting, management, and innovative selling techniques. By equipping women with the necessary tools, Dr Ojo is actively breaking barriers and reshaping perceptions around women’s roles within the economic sphere.

“Additionally, her efforts towards establishing a supportive network among women have fostered an environment of collaboration and mentorship. In a region where women represent a significant percentage of the informal workforce yet often lack recognition, Dr Tinubu-Ojo’s commitment towards establishing a well-defined space for women traders cannot be understated. Research has shown that investing in women can lead to profound economic benefits.

“Moreover, the commemorative aspects of this birthday celebration highlight not only personal milestones but also serve as a platform for reflecting on the ongoing challenges that persist within the realm of sustainable development. The realities of climate change, economic inequality, and social unrest necessitate strong and visionary leadership. Dr Tinubu-Ojo epitomises this, actively engaging with policymakers, civil society, and the business community to advocate for sustainable practices that can lead us toward a more equitable future.

“In light of her birthday, it is opportune to commend her for the ear-to-the-ground leadership style she embodies. Dr Folasade Tinubu-Ojo is well aware that sustainable development does not occur in isolation but demands a collaborative approach. Therefore, she has continuously encouraged dialogue among stakeholders to address barriers to sustainable trade and market access. Her perspective resonates with the findings of the World Economic Forum (2021), which stipulates that stakeholder collaboration is vital for addressing global challenges.”

Dr Fubes Ade Danor urges all citizens and organisations to join in celebrating Dr Tinubu-Ojo not only for her remarkable achievements but also for her vision of a sustainable future for West Africa.

“Birthdays serve as reminders of family, friends, and communities coming together in appreciation of one another; in a broader context, it is also a time to recommit ourselves to the shared goals of equality, sustainability, and progress.

“In closing, the WSDGsO commends Dr Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, celebrating her milestones, her spirit of service, and her perseverance in her quest to uplift those around her. The work she has undertaken is numerous, inspiring, and deserving of recognition as we continue to advocate for a sustainable future for generations to come. May this birthday bring her joy and a renewed sense of purpose in her work”, Fudes added.

Tinubu-Ojo leads Ramadan prayers for security, national growth

Iyaloja-General Folasade Tinubu-Ojo yesterday called on the Muslim community and Nigerians to intensify prayers for the unity, security and progress of Nigeria during Ramadan.

Speaking at the Annual Ramadan Lectures and Prayers for the Nation in Abuja on Wednesday, Mrs. Tinubu-Ojo emphasized the importance of seeking divine intervention for the country’s leadership.

She described prayer as a powerful tool for unlocking greatness and mercy and should therefore not be neglected.

The event drew prominent figures, including serving and former heads of government agencies, industry leaders, market women representatives from various geopolitical zones, and members of civil society organisations (CSOs).

Islamic clerics led lectures and prayers, reinforcing the spiritual significance of Ramadan and the need for collective supplication.

Addressing the gathering, Mrs. Tinubu-Ojo urged Nigerians to uphold prayer as a continuous practice beyond Ramadan, stressing that faith and action must go hand in hand in building a peaceful and prosperous country.

She underscored the values of love, unity and charity, which define the holy month, encouraging citizens to embrace generosity and support for the less privileged.

The market leader called on Nigerians not to relent in praying for the country’s security and economic growth, emphasizing that both spiritual and practical efforts are crucial to ensuring national stability.

Acknowledging that ultimate security comes from God, she also encouraged vigilance and ongoing prayers for divine guidance for the nation’s leaders.

She said: “It is only God that can keep you secure. But then, you should not fold your hands and expose yourself to danger.

“So, we have to pray, commit the whole nation, the whole leadership of this nation into the hands of Almighty Allah, that God should use them to provide security for every Nigerian.

“We have to continue to pray for them, not just during this Ramadan period alone. It is very, very key because it is only God that can give us whatever we need.”

Mrs. Tinubu-Ojo also highlighted the significance of organizing the prayers during Ramadan, describing the month as one of divine favor and mercy.

“You agree with me that we need prayers in Nigeria. At all times, we have to pray for our leaders, pray for everybody,” she said, describing the gathering as a spiritual obligation aimed at fostering peace, unity, and prosperity for the country.

In their lectures on the benefits and lessons of Ramadan, Islamic scholars Prof. Sunusi Yuguda, Dr. Abdulahi Shahibu, Mikhail Daud and Sheikh AbdulWahab Garba, urged Muslims to uphold the spiritual discipline beyond the fasting period, emphasizing the need to shun vanity, practice selflessness, and sustain charitable acts beyond the holy month.

The clerics, Sisters of Salawah, stressed that Ramadan is a period of spiritual rebirth and renewal, encouraging Nigerians to cultivate habits that promote societal harmony.

  • Tinubu-Ojo instals Computer Village market leaders

The President-General, Association of Commodity Market Women and Men of Nigeria, Mrs Folashade Tinubu-Ojo, on Thursday installed Mr Adeniyi Olasoji and Mrs Abisola Azeez as ”Babaloja”and ”Iyaloja”of the popular Computer Village.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Tinubu-Ojo installed the market leaders at an elaborate ceremony in Ikeja.

Recall that some traders had staged protests at the market on Tuesday, kicking against the planned installation of the market leaders.

They had claimed that Computer Village is an international market and that the titles of ”Babaloja” and ”Iyaloja” were only suited for markets where commodities like pepper and onions are sold.

The protesters, who paralysed activities at the market for hours, also claimed the market leaders were imposed on them.

They said people outside of the market had no right to choose leaders for them.

But Tinubu-Ojo at a news conference on Wednesday had described the protests as ill-informed.

She had claimed that, as the leader of all commodities traders, it was within her powers to appoint leaders for any market, including Computer Village.

The market leader denied imposing leaders on the traders, saying she only endorsed the traders within the market that were chosen by stakeholders as leaders.

She alleged that some officials of Computer Dealers and Allied Products Association of Nigeria(CAPDAN),whose tenure she claimed had expired, were behind the protests.

The market leader alleged that the objective of the sponsors of the protests was to perpetuate themselves in power.

At the installation ceremony, Tinubu-Ojo urged the market leaders to see their installation as an opportunity to serve the traders.

While praying that they succeed in their responsibilities, she urged them to give their best to impact greatly on the traders and the market.

Tinubu-Ojo pledged her support for the installed market leaders to enable them to succeed.

Speaking to newsmen after the ceremony, she said the aggrieved CAPDAN officials had visited her on issues surrounding the installation of the new market leaders.

Tinubu-Ojo said she expressed her displeasure over the protests during her meeting with them and that she blamed them for taking the action instead of engaging her in talks.

She said discussions to iron out all issues with the other party were still on-going.

”I don’t have any issues with them (protesters), they have been here; they came yesterday after I addressed the press and they related their position.

”In fact, the former President of CAPDAN, Mr Adeniyi Ojikutu, came this morning. We talked at length and the next thing for us is to call another meeting.

”I don’t have issues with them. The only thing was that, they should have come here instead of carrying placards when they got the information that there was going to be installation.

”They should have come to have a chat with me and perhaps, we may have ironed out issues and understood each other.

”Disagreements are bound to happen, there is no way we won’t step on each others’ toes in offices, markets and so on, but the ability to manage the crisis is what matters, which is the next line of action.

”I have even told the Iyaloja and Babaloja I installed today that we are still going to revisit the issues with the other people at a round table,” she said.

NAN reports that the installation was graced by many colourfully dressed market women who sang and danced in celebration of the new leaders. (NAN)
