Tinubu hails NAFDAC on retaining WHO ML3 status for medicines, vaccines regulation

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) for maintaining the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Maturity Level 3 (ML3) status for the regulation of medicines and vaccines.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the endorsement follows a re-benchmarking exercise conducted by the WHO from May 28 to 30, 2025, assessing NAFDAC against global standards for regulatory performance.

NAFDAC first attained ML3 status in 2022, becoming the first National Regulatory Authority in Africa to achieve the milestone for regulating medicines and vaccines (non-producing).

WHO policy mandates periodic reviews to ensure sustained compliance, with the latest evaluation coming after a formal re-benchmarking in November 2024 and five Institutional Development Plan review meetings between February and April 2025 to monitor corrective actions.

Welcoming the WHO’s verdict, which affirmed that NAFDAC operates “a stable, well-functioning, and integrated framework for regulating medicines and vaccines (non-producing),” President Tinubu commended the agency’s management and staff for their professionalism, consistency, and dedication to safeguarding public health.

He said the achievement reinforces Nigeria’s standing as a reliable partner in global health security and pandemic preparedness, adding that it aligns with his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda to transform the healthcare system.

The President highlighted ongoing government efforts to upgrade over 17,000 primary health centres nationwide, enhance maternal care and diagnostics in underserved communities, train 120,000 frontline health workers, and double national health insurance coverage within three years.

He further underscored the administration’s priority of promoting local production of healthcare products, pledging continued collaboration with credible partners, development agencies, and donor organisations to strengthen the pharmaceutical sector, attract investment in health-related industries, and expand local manufacturing capacity.

President Tinubu assured that his government would fully support NAFDAC’s journey towards attaining WHO’s Maturity Level 4 — the highest global benchmark for regulatory excellence.

The Enforcers of Good Governance have stressed the importance of ensuring that Nigerians at the grassroots are fully aware of the economic empowerment initiatives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

According to the group, such awareness is crucial for citizens to appreciate the President’s extensive efforts to reposition Nigeria after years of decadence and systemic decay.

The Convener and Chief Enforcer, Dr. Kingsley Ogu, noted that the Enforcers of Good Governance adopted a creative approach by blending sportsmanship with political advocacy, using sports as a unifying force to bring communities together while spotlighting the Renewed Hope Agenda and its contributions to both local and national development.

He explained that this was the motivation behind the novelty football match held during the weekend in Ogbogu Town, Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State, emphasizing that the primary objective was to deepen community engagement, promote awareness of government policies, and mobilize grassroots support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

According to him, such activities not only provide entertainment but also serve as platforms for dialogue, mobilization, and reinforcing the shared vision of a more prosperous Nigeria.

Represented by Promise Otto, the Chief Enforcer described the event as a symbolic tribute to President Tinubu’s leadership.

He lauded the administration for its bold and strategic policy directions and its commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians, particularly through infrastructure renewal, economic reforms, and sports development.

“Sports remain one of the most powerful tools for grassroots engagement and national unity,” Ogu said, emphasizing the importance of creating opportunities for young people to contribute positively to their communities.

The spectators were treated to a mix of football, music, and cultural displays, underscoring the unifying potential of such gatherings.

The football match, staged at Dr. Ogu’s country home, featured the Enforcers Football Team against a selection of Rivers State celebrities which ended in favour of the Enforcers with a 6–1 victory.

Ogu further revealed that the novelty match formed part of the group’s wider grassroots mobilization strategy in the build-up to President Tinubu’s expected 2027 re-election bid.

He stressed that beyond the political dimension, the event aimed to foster civic responsibility and inspire citizens to play active roles in shaping Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“For the Enforcers of Good Governance, the day’s event was more than just sport, it was a demonstration of how communities can come together, celebrate shared values, and rally behind a common vision for the future,” he said.

  • Why Niger Delta should support Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, by Otuaro

Why Niger Delta should support Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, by Otuaro

The Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Dr. Dennis Otuaro, has Niger Delta residents will support only President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

He said President Tinubu has, in the last two years, proven he has the best of intentions for the region.

The PAP boss oted that if re-elected, President Tinubu would consolidate on the laudable gains his administration has so far recorded.

Otuaro spoke at the weekend at the closing ceremony of the ‘Stream 1, Batch 3, three-day strategic Leadership, Alternative Dispute Resolution and Mediation training organised by the PAP for its stakeholders in collaboration with the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja.

The PAP administrator reiterated that President Tinubu has genuine intentions for the Niger Delta and is determined to sustain the prevailing peace in the region.

He said the President is galvanising development activities and socio-economic growth through his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Otuaro urged the people of the region to unite firmly behind President Tinubu’s second-term ambition for the greater good of the area.

He cautioned the people of the Niger Delta to beware of political manipulators posing as activists.

According to him, such people are gradually gathering momentum towards the 2027 contest.

The PAP boss urged the people of the region to be wary of the antics of those he called desperate politicians with the intent to cause mischief.

He noted that President Tinubu has given unprecedented encouragement to the PAP, particularly his approval of an increase in the programme’s budget to enable it to expand opportunities in formal education, vocational training, and post-training empowerment schemes for ex-agitators and other beneficiaries.

Otuaro expressed optimism that President Tinubu would do much more for the region as he has demonstrated strong commitment and the political will to deliver on his mandate in the past two years.

He said: “As Niger Delta people, we will support only His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in 2027. Let us not allow anybody to deceive us that come 2027, there is a new and better agenda. That is not true, and we are wise enough to know.

“We are sure that President Tinubu has the best agenda for the country and indeed the Niger Delta. He is the only candidate that we will all support.

“The President has proven that he has genuine intentions to sustain the peace, security, infrastructure, and human capital development, as well as the socio-economic advancement in our region. He means well for us, and this is incontrovertible.

2027: Osun ex-lawmaker urges southern elders to protect Tinubu from northern conspiracy

A former Osun State lawmaker, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has called on political and traditional leaders in southern Nigeria to rally behind President Bola Tinubu and protect him from a small group of northern elites allegedly plotting to thwart his 2027 re-election bid.

In a statement on Sunday, the All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain said Tinubu has long been a friend of the North and a supporter of its political causes, and therefore deserves reciprocal support for his second-term ambition.

Oyintiloye, who once represented Obokun State Constituency, warned that a recurring pattern in the country’s political history shows that a splinter northern clique often emerges when a Southerner is president, resorting to blackmail and other tactics to undermine the administration.

He added that this tendency has repeatedly subjected southern presidents to political embarrassment in the quest by a minority in the North to seize power.

“This has been recurring and the nation’s political history won’t forget the kind of intimidation Southern President often suffered in the hands of very few men from the North who always mount serious opposition to the reelection bid of such President.

“But in the case of President Bola Tinubu, he has done enough to get the support of the major power block in the North.

“Therefore, the time has come for the region to further put the tiny few behind the mischief being plotted against the President where they really belong.

“These individuals are self appointed leaders of the North, so the region’s recognised political leaders and royal fathers can’t continue to watch the trend and allow blackmail against Tinubu to gain traction,” Oyintiloye said.

The former lawmaker also called on political leaders and traditional rulers from Southern Nigeria not to make themselves available for some rejected politicians from the North who are plotting against Tinubu.

He said, “And this is the more reason the Southern leaders must rise and rally support for the President.

“This support is necessary to put an end to the consistent, negative political trajectory that second term bid, whenever a Southerner is the President, often follows.

“They should shield the President against unwarranted attacks from just a handful politicians from the North.”

He also appealed to the His Royal Majesty, Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, who is Chairman of the Council of Southern Traditional Rulers, and the co-chairmen, Obi of Obinugwu, Cletus Illomuanya, and King Jaja of Opobo, Dandeson Jaja, with the Secretary of the of the council, Benjamin Ikenchuku Keagborekuzi 1, Dein of Agbor, to champion the support for the President within the region and work with their colleagues from the North to ensure victory for Tinubu in 2027.

“I also want to advise ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, ex-President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Prof. Wole Soyinka, former President of the Nigeria Senate, Ken Nnamani, and other Southern elders, to rise to the occasion and stop repeat of negative history. They should defend Southern Nigeria from the few Northern power mongers,” he further said.

Tinubu’s education policy will boost literacy in Nigeria – Lawmaker

By 2031, Nigeria will have achieved full literacy nationwide, according to Lagos lawmaker Hon. Temitope Adedeji Adewale.

Adewale, who represents Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, made the statement on Saturday after inspecting a screening exercise for the distribution of his free GCE forms to prospective candidates.

He praised the Federal Government for its initiatives aimed at taking youths off the streets and engaging them in productive ventures, particularly through education.

The lawmaker highlighted the impact of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, noting that it has spurred more Nigerians to seek admission into tertiary institutions.

“You see, Mr. President is doing everything possible to boost the literacy level in the country. And given the way the government is going, by the end of President Tinubu’s second term in 2031, Nigeria will be boasting a 100 percent literacy rate and this would include resolving the issue of out-of-school kids,” Adewale said.

As at April, 2025, NELFUND said over 500,000 students had applied for loans across Nigeria.

The lawmaker described the figure as encouraging adding that it would help the government with future projections.

“It also gladens the heart that the state governments continue to support the Federal Government with various initiatives. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu attended the graduation ceremony of 5,300 residents from the Lagos Skill Acquisition Programmes. This means 5,300 residents are off the labour market.

“We are giving out 400 forms this year. We also give out JAMB forms because we know that education remains the strongest tool we can use to change lives and shape the future.

“This programme is part of my promise to ensure no student misses an opportunity because of financial constraints. Our goal remains to make Ifako-Ijaiye the most educated local government in Nigeria by 2031,” he said.

He said that through the Adewale Temitope Educational Initiatives (ATA-EI), he has given out over 8000 free GCE and JAMB forms so far with at least 120 students on scholarships in various tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

“This says a lot about the government’s interest in the youth and, given another term with President Tinubu and our party in power, Nigerians will look back sometime in the future and thank God that we had this chance,” he added.

  • President Tinubu, the north and distortions of politics

President Tinubu, the north and distortions of politics

    By Tunde Rahman

Two years in the saddle, has President Bola Tinubu undercut the Northern region in the management of the country’s affairs and distribution of political appointments and development projects? Has he reneged on the promise made to the Northern elites three years ago in Kaduna that he would run an all-inclusive government, protect the national interest and be fair to every part of the country and the North in particular?

It was in a bid to answer these important questions that governors, ministers and other top government functionaries from the Northern region converged on Arewa House, Kaduna on July 29 and 30, 2025, under the auspices of the Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation, to present their scorecards and tell the region what they had all done to advance the interest of the region since May 2023.

At the end, the intervention by the governors and government functionaries yielded an overwhelming approval rating and an outright rejection of politically motivated allegations of marginalization. They reeled out impressive strides recorded by the administration in infrastructure, social investment programmes, and security.

According to them, President Tinubu has done a lot for the North. Whatever under-development that may exist in the region should not be attributed to him, but to Northern leaders, for the many years they had neglected the region.

However, it was apparent that the motive behind the frenzied conversation about the Tinubu administration’s achievements is not so much what the President has done – or not done – for the North in terms of distribution of national offices and infrastructure.

It was propelled, essentially, by the self-serving interests of some Northern elites angling to shape political decisions and the politics of 2027. As my friend, the Publisher of The Cable and former Editor of Thisday, Simon Kolawole, would say, “it’s all politics”, and this time, it is all about the politics of 2027.

It’s a page from an old politics playbook: couching the views, political agenda, opinions, and interests of the elites as those of the larger society where they operate. To achieve their aim, they deploy all kinds of subterfuge, including ethnicity or tribalism. Richard Sklar hints at this when he states that, “tribalism is an instrument in the hands of political elites.”

This is quite evident in the outburst of the New Nigeria Peoples Party leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who recently accused President Tinubu of marginalising the North in infrastructure development. However, available evidence points to the contrary.

According to the Director-General, Budget Office, Dr. Tanimu Yakubu, who should know, more than half of the capital budgets for 2024 and 2025, were allocated to projects and programs in Northern Nigeria. “Contrary to politically-motivated narratives, Northern Nigeria is not on the margins; it is at the heart of federal investment priorities. Over 50% of the capital budget for 2024 and 2025 is traceable to projects and programs in the North when major national trunk infrastructure and water basin investments are properly accounted for,” he declared

Tanimu outlined flagship projects and interventions that serve as evidence of the administration’s commitment to developing the North. These include the Abuja–Kano Expressway dualization, ₦12.1 trillion Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway, the most ambitious cross-regional road project in decades, spanning 1,068 km, costing ₦3.63 trillion, with 30% of it already approved by President Tinubu for the project’s initial rollout in Sokoto and Kebbi; Kano–Maradi Standard Gauge Railway, a Sahel trade corridor enabler; Zungeru–Kano Power Transmission Line, boosting industrial power supply; Funtua and Bauchi Inland Dry Ports for agro-export and logistics; and Expansion of Airport Runways in Katsina, Maiduguri and Kaduna.

But firstly, there is a need for recourse to the promise Tinubu made to the North before he was elected president. On October 17, 2022, Tinubu came before the Northern leaders to present his agenda for the region and solicit their votes. This was in the run-up to an election where former vice president Atiku Abubakar and Peoples Democratic Party candidate in the poll, had fouled the air, fanning the embers of ethnicity, telling the North he belonged to it and was the best candidate to protect the Northern interest. There was tension in the land. The nation’s fault lines were being toyed with. Atiku’s erstwhile presidential running mate in the 2019 election, who by then had become the Labour Party candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, was also unrelenting, ratcheting up ethnic and religious sentiments for his candidacy.

It was against this backdrop that Tinubu mounted the podium at the Arewa House. Both Tinubu and Atiku were leading other candidates in the North at the time. Thus, the North had become divided and the atmosphere at the venue of the talks was charged. In a measured but purposeful tone, Tinubu told the gathering that as president, he would consolidate on the investments of the late President Buhari administration in all sectors to build on the gains recorded.

He spoke of his plans to ensure that insecurity was nipped in the bud in the North and across the country, harness the resources that abound in every part of the nation for greater economic development, and utilize the vast natural resources of the country through strategic investment in infrastructure.

Speaking specifically and cautiously on his plans for the North, he said, among other things, that the region has a comparative advantage in agriculture and mining, and that under his presidency, the North would emerge as the hub of agribusiness in Africa through huge investment in the sector in collaboration with the private sector.

“Agriculture is of special interest to me. It is both an economic and existential issue for every country. Experience in the last seven years has shown the potential of agriculture in solving the problem of unemployment and boosting our GDP,” he said.

On his plans for education and reducing out-of-school children in the North, he said working with both states and local governments to reform and retool the system, he would provide the required leadership and mobilize investment for the development of the sector. These reforms, according to him, will give special attention to the welfare and training of teachers and lecturers as necessary catalyst for the better system the North desires.

He identified some priority roads and hydropower projects in the North which had either not been followed through, and new ones he would introduce to aid the development of the region.

His lucid presentation and the way and manner he calmly but firmly responded to the questions thrown at him were quite impressive. I know this as a fact because I was there. With that event, the North and Tinubu apparently entered into a pact. And following the results of the 2023 presidential election, the North voted well for Tinubu, giving him about 60% of the votes that brought him to power.

Are there gaps in what he promised the North and what he delivered to them? Has President Tinubu treated the North unfairly two years down the road? I do not think so! I think the President has kept faith with his promise.

However, there is room for improvement. Ongoing critical projects in the North like the Sokoto-Badagry Highway, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano reconstruction work, Mambilla Hydroelectric Dam, Baro Inland Port, and Ajaokuta Steel Mill should be pursued vigorously.

The views expressed at the Kaduna two-day summit titled “Assessing Electoral Promises: Fostering Government-Citizens’ Engagement for National Unity” were nonetheless interesting, though admittedly mixed.

The Chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) Board of Trustees, Bashir Dalhatu, alleged that the Tinubu government had neglected the region, especially in its budget allocations and infrastructural development.

“Two years into President Tinubu’s four-year tenure, the feeling among the people of the North is, to put it mildly, completely mixed,” he said, citing certain federal budget figures to underscore the alleged neglect.

Such grim prognosis was offset by some contrasting submissions. Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani and Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State said the President is committed to fulfilling his promises to the North, while Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume affirmed that President Tinubu’s administration would leave no region behind.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, represented by Dr. Aliyu Moddibo, his Special Adviser on General Duties, noted that the current administration’s inclusive reforms were in line with the economic reality of Nigerians.

Minister of Budget and National Planning Atiku Bagudu stated that the administration is implementing policies aimed at transforming Nigeria’s economy and fulfilling the promises made to Nigerians.

“The President has complete faith in Nigeria. He does not make decisions based on ethnicity or region. His government is rooted in fairness and inclusivity,” he said.

On the fight against banditry and terrorism, National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu said the Tinubu administration had made giant strides in protecting lives and properties. Ribadu said Nigerian security forces had subdued and neutralized some of the terrorist leaders, who had unleashed terror along the Kaduna-Abuja highway, making it safer for travellers.

The NSA noted that the once-troubled highways from Zamfara to Katsina, Kaduna-Abuja and Kaduna to Birnin Gwari that were a nightmare for travellers, can now be safely used at night due to improvement in security. “Politics will not allow people to give us credit for all of that,” he added.

In the final analysis, the Kaduna Governor gave the Northern leaders some food for thought when he declared that the northern woes should not be blamed on President Tinubu. “Yes, President Tinubu made promises. But let’s be honest with ourselves: he has kept faith with the North in many critical areas – security, agriculture, education, and economic inclusion. The real question is, have we kept faith with our people as Northern leaders?”

Tinubu, Akpabio, Akume, others mourn Audu Ogbeh

…hail late statesman’s patriotism, lasting legacy

A former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Audu Ogbeh, is dead.

A statement issued by the Ogbeh family said that the elder statesman who was also a former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, died on Saturday, August 9, at the age of 78.

The family described the deceased as a patriarch who left a legacy of integrity, service and dedication to the country and community.

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Chief Audu Ogbeh. He passed away on August 9 at the fulfilled age of 78.

“He departed peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, service and dedication to our nation and community. We are comforted by the many lives he touched and the example he set,” the family said.

Reacting to the elder statesman’s demise, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described him as a patriot whose wisdom, dedication, and pursuit of progress left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s political landscape.

In a condolence message to the government and people of Benue State, the President said the nation had lost a statesman of rare intellect and commitment to national development.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President also commiserated with the late politician’s family, friends, and associates.

President Tinubu noted the late Ogbeh’s deep intellectual contributions to policy formulation and his skill in articulating practical solutions to the country’s complex challenges.

“He was always ready with facts and figures to support his propositions. The nation will sorely miss his insightful perspectives and wealth of experience,” the President said.

Joining politics in the 1970s as a legislator, Chief Ogbeh became a respected voice in governance, earning a reputation for principled service and an unwavering belief in Nigeria’s potential, said Tinubu, as he prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased’s soul and

God’s comfort to his bereaved family.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, described the deceased as a man of integrity and deep commitment to the Nigerian project, saying his death is a monumental loss to the nation.

Akume, who paid a condolence visit to Ogbeh’s Abuja residence on Saturday, hailed the elder statesman as a distinguished leader, consummate public servant, and patriot who dedicated his life to the service of his people and the country in various capacities.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Akume described Ogbeh as a “distinguished leader, teacher, patriot, consummate public servant, and quintessential intellectual, who shone more than a million stars in the service of his community, Benue State, and Nigeria as a whole.”

“Our prayers are with the family and loved ones he left behind, and we pray that Almighty God will grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss of this perfect gentleman,” he added.

Likewise, former President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo expressed shock and sadness over Ogbeh’s demise.

Obasanjo who is in Uganda on a visit, described the late Minister as a peace-loving, unassuming, committed patriot and a firm believer in democracy and participatory governance.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, the former President stressed that late Ogbeh “will be missed for his commitment to politics, governance and democracy and the re-establishment of democracy in Nigeria.  His place will be very difficult to fill within his community, the State, the Party and the nation.”

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, also expressed sadness over the passing of Ogbeh.

Akpabio, in a statement through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon. Eseme Eyiboh, described the late statesman as a distinguished Nigerian that lived a life of service and integrity.

“Chief Ogbeh lived a life of service, integrity, and commitment to the development of our nation. He was an intellectual store house, whose legacy of service and dedication to Nigeria is a testament to his character and commitment to public service. We will sorely miss him.

“On behalf of my family, constituents and the 10th Senate, I extend our deepest condolences to the family of Chief Audu Ogbeh, his friends, political associates, and the people and government of Benue State as well as our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, on his part, described Ogbeh’s demise as a rude shock stressing that the late Audu Ogbeh was a quintessential gentleman, an amiable friend and reliable political ally, whose immense contributions to nation-building would be sorely missed.

“He was a detribalised and development-minded politician. One who combined intellectualism with pragmatism. He was also a true defender of liberal democracy. His type is difficult to replace,” Atiku said, and prayed that “the Almighty blissfully rests his soul and comfort his family.”

The Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former President of the Senate, David Mark, also lamented the death of frontline politician and former PDP chairman.

In a statement by his media aide, Paul Mumeh, in Abuja, Senator Mark said: “I have lost a dependable brother and friend.”

Mark recalled that Ogbeh was among the rare breed of political leaders who genuinely believed in the unity of Nigeria, where no citizen should be oppressed or denied the opportunity to fulfil their dreams.

“Ogbeh preached justice, fairness, and equity. He was morally upright even in the face of adversity,” he said, urging his family and the people of Benue State to take solace in the fact that the deceased lived an exemplary life worthy of emulation.

Former Delta State Governor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, on his part, stated that the late Ogbeh was one of the most effective national chairmen in the history of the PDP.

In a personal tribute, Ibori praised the late Ogbeh as a humble and unassuming gentleman who valued integrity above money or personal gain.

Ibori recalled that during his bid for re-election as governor in 2003, Ogbeh was given direct instructions to block his candidacy. However, Ogbeh, being a man of principle, refused to comply with what he termed “devilish machinations.” Ibori went on to contest and win the election, completing his second term in 2007.

“On behalf of myself, my wife, and my entire family, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, and the good people of Benue State. May his gentle soul rest in peace,” he said.

The Northern State Governors’ Forum (NSGF) also expressed sadness over the demise of the elder statesman.

Chairman of the forum and Governor of Gombe, Inuwa Yahaya, in a condolence message issued by his Media Aide, Ismaila Uba-Misilli,on Saturday, in Gombe, described Ogbeh as a towering political figure, a statesman of uncommon intellect and an iconic son of Northern Nigeria.

“Chief Audu Ogbeh was an accomplished leader, a seasoned politician and multifaceted scholar whose contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey and development will remain etched in history.

“He brought dignity and depth to every office he held and served the country with integrity and commitment,” he said.

The NSGF chairman described Ogbeh’s death as a huge loss not only to Benue and the north, but also to the entire country as he left behind a legacy of patriotism, intellectual depth, humility and outstanding public service.

The Northern Senators’ Forum (NSF) also condoled with the family of late Ogbeh; Chairman of the Forum, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, in a statement in Abuja, described him as a statesman whose vision extended beyond politics into the fields and homes of Nigerian farmers. During his tenure as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, he launched initiatives like the Agricultural Inputs Mechanisation and Management Services (AIMMS) to enhance transparency and reduce fraud.

“In his public life, Chief Ogbeh always put Nigeria first, preaching about the unity and betterment of Nigeria. He was a good ambassador of Benue State, and his contributions to national development will be remembered.”

Former Delta State Governor, James Onanefe Ibori, has described the late Audu Ogbeh as one of the most effective national chairmen in the history of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a personal tribute, Ibori praised the late Ogbeh as a humble and unassuming gentleman who valued integrity above money or personal gain.

Reflecting on their political history, Ibori recalled that during his bid for re-election as governor in 2003, Ogbeh was given direct instructions to block his candidacy. However, Ogbeh, being a man of principle, refused to comply with what he termed “devilish machinations.”

Ibori went on to contest and win the election, completing his second term in 2007.

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) equally expressed deep shock over Ogbeh’s demise, describing him as a nationalist and one of Nigeria’s biggest farmers.

In a condolence message signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba, the Forum described Ogbeh as “a passionate and large-scale farmer” and “a committed son of Arewa,”stressing that his contributions to agriculture, politics, and national unity were indelible.

Ogbeh, a renowned farmer, playwright and politician, served as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development from 2015 to 2019 under late President Muhammad Buhari.

The native of Efugo-Otukpa in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State was previously appointed as the Minister of Communications during the Second Republic administration of the late President Shehu Shagari at the age of 32, making him the youngest federal cabinet member at that time.

He had previously served as deputy speaker of Benue House of Assembly after joining politics in 1979.

  • ‘Tinubu’s aviation team fixing Nigeria’s airport infrastructure gaps’

‘Tinubu’s aviation team fixing Nigeria’s airport infrastructure gaps’

Aviation industry stakeholders have hailed efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo in fixing decades –  old airport infrastructure challenges describing the ambitious plan to improve passenger experience as a strategic move to unlock new revenue streams for airline.

They said Nigeria’s aviation sector is poised for a major turnaround as the President Tinubu administration consolidates interventions through facility upgrade at airports.

Speaking at the 29th League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents (LAAC) Annual Conference in Lagos, Air Peace Chairman and CEO, Dr. Allen Onyema who led other speakers described inadequate airport infrastructure as one of the most pressing barriers to the growth and profitability of Nigerian airlines. He noted that the absence of proper transit facilities at key airports has long hindered the country’s ability to function as a true regional hub, costing airlines both passengers and revenue.

Airlines operating in West and Central Africa, he explained, lose a competitive edge when connecting passengers must clear immigration, undergo customs checks, and recheck their baggage simply to transit through Nigeria, a process that often drives them to other African airports.

The lack of seamless connectivity, he emphasised has particularly affected the ability of domestic carriers to integrate regional routes into global connections.

Onyema welcomed the government’s recent interventions, including the plan to rebuild the Lagos airport facilities to accommodate modern transit operations.

He expressed confidence in the administration’s commitment, noting that with sustained focus, the country could, within two years, possess the infrastructure needed to compete with Africa’s leading aviation hubs.

He emphasised that such infrastructure upgrades act as a form of indirect financing for airlines by reducing operational inefficiencies, cutting avoidable costs, and creating conditions for sustainable expansion.

With the right facilities in place, Nigerian carriers, he maintained, could match the success of leading African airlines within the next decade.

Also speaking, former spokesperson of defunct Nigeria Airways Limited, Mr Chris Aligbe advised the government to deepen its intervention for the growth of the aviation industry.

Aligbe said:” In every sub-sector is closely linked with each other and so for us today, we are in a vicious circle. Whether you are talking about airlines, if the airlines are not doing well, the airport is not going to do well, the same with grand handling companies and aviation. So we are in a vicious circle.

“The critical point for us today, how do we break this vicious circle? For me, the airlines should be the breaking point.  Thank God we are modernizing our airports.”
