Jega: Tinubu has political will to end farmers-herders crisis

The Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Livestock Reforms, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has said the President possesses the political will to resolve Nigeria’s long-standing farmers-herders crisis if the right reforms are implemented with support from relevant stakeholders.

Jega, a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), spoke yesterday at a distinguished personality lecture, titled: The Political Economy of Livestock Development in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects, at the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Kwara State. The lecture was part of activities commemorating the university’s 50th anniversary and held in honour of Senator Saliu Mustapha.

Jega described the escalating clashes between farmers and herders as a product of worsening land pressure, climate change, and poor governance of natural resources—issues that need to be tackled as part of broader livestock sector reforms.

“President Tinubu has demonstrated the willingness and capacity to solve this crisis,” Jega said. “What is needed now is stakeholder support, especially from the National Assembly, security agencies, and state actors, to implement evidence-based reforms.”

The political scientist, who advises the President on livestock reform policy, also painted a sobering picture of Nigeria’s looming protein deficit and rising food insecurity.

Citing population growth projections by 2050, Jega warned that Nigeria, expected to become the world’s third most populous nation with nearly 400 million people, could face severe nutritional and economic crises unless the livestock sector undergoes urgent transformation.

“To meet basic consumption needs by 2050, Nigeria will require a 253 per cent increase in poultry production, 117 per cent in beef, and an astonishing 577 per cent growth in milk output.

“These are not abstract projections—they are clear warning signs,” he said.

Jega added: “The livestock sector already contributes seven to nine per cent to Nigeria’s agricultural GDP and sustains over 20 million livelihoods.

“Yet, the sector remains crippled by outdated production systems, poor veterinary services, inadequate infrastructure, fragmented value chains, and chronic underinvestment.”

According to him, the insecurity tied to the farmer-herder conflict has further compounded the problem, disrupting rural livelihoods and exacerbating national instability.

“Violent conflict over land use and grazing routes is not only a food systems issue; it is a peace and security issue. Reforming this sector is no longer optional; it is a developmental and national security imperative,” Jega said.

The presidential aide emphasised the need for climate-smart agricultural practices, investment in rural infrastructure, and the creation of inclusive value chains that bring private capital into the sector.

“The alternative is continued protein deficiency, widespread rural poverty, and deeper reliance on food imports,” he said.

No community too small to enjoy democracy dividends, Tinubu assures Nigerians

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday said no Nigerian community was too small to enjoy the dividends of democracy.

Tinubu said the inauguration of the newly constructed Giri District access roads was a testament to his administration’s commitment to opening up rural communities.

He praised FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for making the Renewed Hope Agenda (RHA) meaningful to rural dwellers.

The President, represented at the inauguration by   House of Representatives Speaker  Tajudeen Abbas,  said history will never forget Wike for taking governance closer to  FCT  residents.

He said: “From the vast-spaced districts of Maitama, Jahi, Katampe, Wuye, Mabushi and the likes, to the towns of Gwagwalada, Kwali, Bwari and Abaji, and the growing communities of Kabusa, Ketti and now Giri district, your leadership has brought progress closer to the people.

“You have not only embraced the visions of my administration’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’, you have localised it, made it meaningful and made it real.

“Your actions have brought quality and excellence to the dual states of communities long laid in the shadows.

‘’These newly constructed access roads are not just infrastructural achievements, but statements of intent, the intention to open up Giri District and the FCT.

“Honourable minister, on behalf of myself, my administration and the good people of the FCT, I say thank you for reminding us that good governance is not about fanfare, but about footsteps.  Continue to shine your light, Nigeria sees it, and history will record it.

‘’This administration, no community is too small, area too distant and citizen too insignificant to benefit from the dividends of democracy.

“To the contractors, the engineers, the labourers and the community leaders who supported this process, you have all played a part in building not just roads, but trust between the government and its people.

“And to the residents of Giri, I say may these roads lead you to greater opportunities. May they carry your children to school, farmers to markets, families to healthcare and dreams to reality.

‘’As your President, I’m proud of what we celebrate here and even more committed to seeing more of such milestones replicated across the nation.

“I stand before you, not only to inaugurate a road, but also to express a deep and heartfelt appreciation to the FCT Minister, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom  Wike, a man whose quiet diligence and visionary leadership have continued to transform the landscape of the Federal Capital Territory.

‘’The roads we inaugurate here in Giri District are more than accessible. They are bridges of inclusion, signals of recognition and instruments of national unity. They remind us that development must reach the outskirts just as it touches the surface.

“Honourable minister, your words speak for themselves in every corner of the FCT.’’

Earlier,   Wike accused the authorities of the University of Abuja(now Yakubu Gowon) of land grabbing.

Wike said he has directed the FCT Director of Land to give them 4,000 hectares out of 11,000 hectares that it had already fenced.

He said: “The university, on its own, grabbed 11,000 hectares. No document, nothing. I said that would not happen.

“What you see there is fencing everywhere. Before you know it, they will sell our land.

“I have told the Director of Land and relevant agencies to carve out 4,000 hectares and give to the university.

This road being inaugurated  has helped us to stop the land grabbing by the university.’’

The minister said the Giri access roads would open up the district where many institutions are domiciled.

Tinubu proposes formal Nigeria-OECS pact to deepen bilateral ties

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has proposed the establishment of a formal Joint Commission or Political Consultation Agreement between Nigeria and the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to strengthen structured collaboration across key sectors and enhancing the historic ties between Africa and the Caribbean.

Speaking on Monday during a special joint session of the Senate and House of Assembly of Saint Lucia at the William Jefferson Clinton Ballroom, Sandals Grande Resort, Tinubu emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to forging deeper partnerships with the OECS and its member states, spanning trade, investment, education, culture, health, and climate resilience.

“In consideration of the strategic importance that my country attaches to OECS, we have formally established diplomatic relations with Saint Lucia. This diplomatic move is a symbolic bridge that will provide a gateway to fostering ties between us”, Tinubu said.

He continued: “To further deepen our partnership, I recommend that our two parties initiate negotiations towards a formal agreement on a joint commission or political consultation—such a framework will provide a structural platform to explore and advance cooperation across a broader range of mutually beneficial areas.”

The Nigerian leader, who is on a state visit to Saint Lucia, was warmly received by the Saint Lucian legislature and leaders from across the OECS, including heads of government and representatives from Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, the Premier of Montserrat, Saint Martin, and Saint Vincent.

Citing Nigeria’s economic reforms and outward-looking strategy since assuming office in May 2023, President Tinubu said his administration is keen on building strong international partnerships.

“When I assumed the office of the President of Nigeria in May 2023, my administration embarked on series of economic and social reforms… to put the country on the path of sustainable growth and development,” he noted.

He explained that the visit to Saint Lucia was in line with Nigeria’s renewed global engagement agenda and an effort “to explore areas of cooperation and collaboration between the Eastern Caribbean States.”

Tinubu identified trade and investment as core pillars of potential collaboration, pointing to Nigeria’s economic size and diversity.

“Nigeria’s vast natural resources and its position as the largest market in Africa present significant opportunity for the OECS, both as a source of essential input and as a growing export destination,” he stated.

“Together, we can leverage our respective strengths to attract investments, create jobs and foster joint ventures that benefit both our peoples,” the President added.

He also highlighted the potential for deeper educational and scientific cooperation, advocating exchange programs between Nigerian and OECS maritime universities, saying “such partnerships will build technical capacity, but also foster mutual understanding and long-term academic collaboration”.

Beyond education, the President called for joint scientific research initiatives to address shared health challenges, as well as climate adaptation strategies.

“We can deepen our understanding and enhance collective resilience,” he said, referencing joint efforts on climate change, hurricane response, and sustainable agriculture to ensure food security.

In addition to institutional cooperation, Tinubu called for greater people-to-people engagement through cultural exchanges, tourism, and visa facilitation.

“It is essential that we invest in cultural and human exchanges that build mutual understanding from the ground up among our peoples,” he said, stressing the importance of heritage awareness among younger generations.

“In a concrete step towards this goal, Nigeria is open to exploring a visa waiver arrangement for holders of diplomatic and official passports from OECS member states traveling to Nigeria. I respectfully urge a reciprocal gesture to enable smoother movement of officials and foster closer institutional cooperation”, he announced.

President Tinubu also pledged to extend Nigeria’s Technical Aide Corps to the OECS countries to support capacity development efforts across key sectors.

“We will provide skilled professionals to support capacity building efforts across all sectors in your region,” he said.

In a goodwill gesture, the President offered full tuition scholarships to students from OECS countries, stating: “I will establish full scholarship tuition for students of OECS.”

Quoting both Marcus Garvey and an African proverb, Tinubu concluded with a call for unity, mutual support, and long-term partnership between Nigeria and the Eastern Caribbean region.

“Let us journey together, united in purpose and fortified by our common heritage. Africa belongs to all of us. We need to continue to promote that,” he urged.

Endorsements for Tinubu, Oborevwori show Delta people value performance — Aniagwu

Delta Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, has said that the increasing wave of endorsements for President Bola Tinubu and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori clearly show that Deltans appreciate effective leadership and the developmental strides witnessed across the state.

Speaking on ‘This Week’ on Arise News, Aniagwu highlighted that the Oborevwori administration had remained faithful to its MORE agenda—comprising Meaningful development, Opportunities for all, Realistic reforms, and Enhanced peace and security, since assuming office.

According to Aniagwu, the Governor’s commitment to delivering across these four pillars has ensured that no part of the state is left behind.

“He was very clear that development must reach all senatorial districts and local governments. That includes not only physical infrastructure but reforms that improve the quality of life for all residents,” he said.

The Commissioner stressed the importance of peace and security in achieving the Governor’s vision, noting that Oborevwori prioritized ensuring safety across Delta’s 25 local government areas.

“In an atmosphere of chaos, even the best ideas fail. The Governor knew he needed to build peace to actualize his vision,” he added.

Aniagwu further explained that the endorsements for both the Governor and the President are a reflection of public satisfaction with their synergy, especially now that they share the same political platform.

He cited several federal infrastructure projects ongoing in the state, including the 17.5km access road to the Second Niger Bridge, the Benin–Asaba corridor, and upgrades to the Sapele–Amukpe–Abraka–Agbor highway.

“People can see that the President and the Governor are working in tandem. That alignment is paying off. Our people are simply saying, let’s sustain this momentum,” Aniagwu noted.

Aniagwu emphasised that the growing support is not swaying the Governor’s focus.

“Oborevwori is not carried away by endorsements. He remains committed to delivering more developmental footprints, and we are proud to be led by someone who understands our people’s needs.”

He further said Delta State is poised to reap significant benefits from Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s recent participation in the International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum (IIICF) in China.

Nigerian medical student hails “inspiring” encounter with Tinubu, Saint Lucian PM

For Nigerian medical student Bob Chikwem Amadi, what began as a routine work assignment turned into an unforgettable encounter with two world leaders — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of Nigeria and Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre of Saint Lucia.

Amadi, who is completing his medical education at the American International University in Saint Lucia, was part of a service team engaged during President Tinubu’s courtesy visit to the official residence of Prime Minister Pierre on the second day of the Nigerian leader’s state visit to the Caribbean nation.

A native of Rivers State, Amadi has lived in Saint Lucia for a decade and recently concluded the four-year basic phase of his medical studies.

He is preparing to commence the clinical training component of his programme.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Amadi works part-time as a talent and brand manager with a local catering and entertainment firm, a role that brought him in close proximity to the high-level bilateral meeting.

During the visit, Prime Minister Pierre was informed by his aides that a Nigerian student was among the event staff.

Taking a moment before his official discussions began, the Prime Minister introduced Amadi to President Tinubu.

The President, known for his charismatic presence and interest in the Nigerian diaspora, paused to engage the young student, asking his name, background, and progress in his studies.

Tinubu offered his best wishes and words of encouragement, commending Amadi’s efforts in pursuing his education abroad.

Reflecting on the moment, Amadi described it as deeply inspiring.

“This is an inspiring moment for me. Saint Lucia is an amazing island. I will describe it as a wonderful place. They are a very contented society and things are relatively calm”, he said.

The highlight of the encounter came when Amadi was invited to join both President Tinubu and Prime Minister Pierre for a group photograph — a symbolic and memorable conclusion to an unexpected meeting with two of the most prominent political figures in Africa and the Caribbean.

Amadi also shared his thoughts on the historical and cultural links between Nigeria and Saint Lucia.

“We have always hoped that there are many opportunities between Saint Lucia and Nigeria. We share similar food crops and culture, and the connection is deep”, he noted.

President Tinubu’s ongoing visit to Saint Lucia marks the first leg of a broader diplomatic engagement with the Caribbean and South American regions.

His itinerary includes high-level bilateral talks aimed at strengthening trade, cultural exchange, and diplomatic cooperation between Nigeria and Caribbean nations.
