  • Urgent appeal to Tinubu to save mass exodus of  Nigerian athletes

Urgent appeal to Tinubu to save mass exodus of  Nigerian athletes

    By Maxwell Kumoye

Sports and athletics in particular, in many countries including Nigeria, have been used to develop and empower the teeming youth population. It has also helped the government, well-meaning individuals and corporate bodies to reach their target audience and market.

It has become an industry where athletes, coaches, musicians, administrators, marketers, advertisers, sponsors, and other stakeholders earn their livelihood.

In Nigeria, there is a conscious effort at attaining that height with consistent reforms in sports and its related sectors, aimed at taking the country beyond the ordinary in all ramifications.

Through the sheer determination of our athletes and the contributions of the present administration, and certain corporate bodies, Nigeria has been able to excel in many international competitions and events, engraving the country’s in gold.

Indeed, the support of the private sector through their numerous world class clients, products and services has contributed to Nigeria’s success in this area of the economy.

However, it’s imperative to state that most of the success stories and landmark developments in sports and the showbiz sectors are gradually being eroded by the high and purposeful spending on foreign athletes by countries in America, Europe and Asia. And Turkey or Turkiye is one of them.

Only last week, the news broke that world record holder in the women’s 150m and Nigeria’s record holder in 200m, Favour Chukwuka Ofili, has decided to switch allegiance to Turkey.

Although she claimed that money was not the primary reason for her decision. All investigations, facts and the recent movements to Turkey by over a dozen Olympic Games gold medallists and World Champions in athletics, from well-organized and established countries says it all.

    The facts before us:

The Turkish government under the leadership of 71-year-old Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is the 12th  and current President of Turkey, is using sports and athletics in particular to open his country to the business, political and tourism worlds.

And one of the ways Turkey is using to grab the headlines, as well as reach its grand and rapid plan is by hooking top athletes who are not of Turkish origin to win laurels and add value to their economy.

They are offering earth-shaking incentives to lure these world class athletes including our own beloved daughter, Favour Chukwuka Ofili, into their dragnet as part of the country’s sporting ambassadors who will then invite the much needed investors and tourists to Istanbul and other parts of the country.

    The irresistible carrots

The Turkish Athletics Federation is offering half a million dollars as sign-on fee to any top athlete that agrees to switch allegiance to Turkey and a month allowance of thirty thousand dollars as training grant. That’s not all, gold medal winners at the Olympic Games, World Championships and European Championships get half a million dollars for gold, three hundred and fifty thousand dollars goes for a silver medal and a hundred and fifty thousand dollars for a bronze medal winner, this is besides the appurtenance fee for these competitions.

    The results so far

Six members of Team Jamaica including a gold medal winner, a silver medallist and two bronze medal winners have changed their nationality to Turkey and information making the rounds indicates that more athletes will be moving over to Istanbul after the Jamaica National Athletics Trials this weekend.

The same story goes for a number of top Kenyans, Americans and perhaps Nigerians if urgent steps are not taken in Nigeria’s case.

    What the president must do

As the popular saying goes, a stitch in time saves nine or a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first steps. The Federal Government, the National Assembly and the National Sports Commission must review our sports policies, incentives and reward packages to rekindle elite athlete’s confidence and commitment to the country.

It’s commendable that the Government has improved sports funding in the last two years, athletes are getting training grants ahead of major competitions. But the figures are a far cry compared to what Turkey, USA, UK, Germany, Morocco and South Africa are offering their top athletes.

Currently Nigeria is offering five thousand dollars for gold, three thousand dollars for silver and a thousand five hundred dollars for bronze medal winners at major competitions aside football.

This amount should be significantly improved upon, if we hope to rub shoulders with the big sporting Nations and also prevent our elite sportsmen and women from dumping Nigeria in the face of flowing milk, honey and dollars being offered to them by Turkey, Rwanda, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and America to mention but a few.

We cannot deny the fact that sports is under-funded from all the three tiers of government and the private sector. Our sporting infrastructures are in a sorry state, training of technical officials is lagging behind and the much needed investors are not forthcoming.

It’s informative to state that since 2021, Rwanda has hosted over 70 international competitions and sports events, generating more than $50 million in revenues. Sports are more than a game. It is a platform for youth, innovation, economic stimuli and continental and equally world visibility.

The time to take this BOLD and DECISIVE step to correct these inadequacies is NOW, not tomorrow.

Brazilian-backed $1bn GIP to overhaul Nigeria’s agricultural sector – Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation with Brazil, spotlighting the $1 billion Green Imperative Programme as a transformative initiative to overhaul Nigeria’s agricultural sector through technology-driven solutions and strategic capacity building.

Speaking after receiving the Vice President of the Federative Republic of Brazil, Geraldo Alckmin, at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday evening, President Tinubu described the programme as a flagship of the growing partnership between the two nations.

“The landmark $1 billion Green Imperative Programme, a bilateral agricultural mechanisation initiative anchored by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security in collaboration with Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and private sector stakeholders, stands as a flagship of this renewed partnership,” the President stated on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, @officialABAT.

He explained the initiative is “designed to transform Nigeria’s agricultural value chain through technology transfer, capacity building, and the establishment of service centres across the country.”

Tinubu, who was joined by Vice President Kashim Shettima during the high-level meeting, said the visit by the Brazilian delegation signified a shift in relations from mere expressions of goodwill to concrete steps towards shared economic and developmental goals.

“Our engagement reaffirmed the enduring ties between Nigeria and Brazil, two diverse democracies linked by shared values, historical connections, and a common ambition for inclusive, people-driven growth,” Tinubu said.

He outlined several strategic sectors where both nations are aligning efforts, including agribusiness and food security, trade and industrialisation, energy transition, healthcare delivery, innovation, defence cooperation, and cultural exchange.

Looking ahead, President Tinubu noted that Nigeria is preparing for active participation in the upcoming COP30 Climate Conference in Belém, Brazil — another avenue for intensifying collaboration on climate action and sustainability.

“We also look forward to Nigeria’s active participation at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, as both nations work to scale up collaboration on climate action, energy transition, and environmental resilience,” he said.

From renewable energy projects to creative industry partnerships, Tinubu described the renewed relationship as one anchored in shared prosperity and results-driven diplomacy.

“Nigeria remains firmly committed to building resilient South–South partnerships anchored in mutual respect, shared prosperity, and tangible results for our citizens,” the President affirmed.

He concluded with a message of solidarity in Portuguese, echoing Brazil’s maxim for unity: “As our Brazilian friends say, ‘Juntos somos mais fortes’ —together we are stronger.”

I am determined to replicate Abuja infrastructure across the country – Tinubu

… FCT council polls: don’t waste your money, Wike advises opposition candidates

President Bola Tinubu has assured that his administration will replicate the infrastructure put in place in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) across the country.

Tinubu vowed that no region would be left behind.

He said this on Tuesday at the official commissioning of the right-hand service carriageway of Inner Northern Expressway (INEX) from ring road 3 (RR3) to outer northern expressway (Murtala Mohammed Expressway), also known as the Idu–Zuba road, in the FCT, Abuja.

The president commended the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for his vision, commitment to quality and timely execution of projects.

The infrastructure, Tinubu said is a critical piece of the Federal Capital Territory’s master plan, designed to ease traffic flow, enhance connectivity and improve urban mobility for millions of commuters, residents and businesses in the city.

Tinubu, who was represented by the Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, said, “It is with great pride and fulfilment that I stand before you today to commission the newly completed right-hand service carriageway of the Inner Northern Expressway (INEX) linking Route 3 to the Outer Northern Expressway ONEX also known as the Murtala Muhammed Way.

“I commend the FCT administration led by the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his vision, commitment to quality and timely execution. You have contributed to something larger than the roadway. You have contributed to the future of our capital.

“This vital carriageway we commissioned today is not just a road. It is a symbol of progress and a reflection of our administration’s Rehabilitation Agenda. An agenda committed to building infrastructure that serves the people, unlocks economic potential and supports sustainable development.

“As traffic volume increases in the FCT and across the satellite towns, it has become imperative for the continuous expansion and maintenance of critical routes. This road will not only decongest key junctions but also facilitate safer, faster movement within Abuja’s transportation corridors. It will open more opportunities for businesses, housing and investments in the adjoining districts.

“It is quite apt to say that projects like these are a testament to what we can achieve when planning, execution and leadership align with purpose. We are determined to replicate these in every part of the country with roads, bridges, railways and more, ensuring that no region is left behind.

“To the residents and road users, I appeal to you, protect this infrastructure, obey traffic rules and keep public assets with respect. They belong to all of us and generations yet unborn. Having said that, it is my honour to officially commission the right-hand service carriageway of the Inner Northern carriageway from Ring Road 3 to the Murtala Muhammed Expressway.

FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, had earlier took stock of the various infrastructural interventions made by President Bola Tinubu in the territory in the last two years, wondering what the opposition would predicate their campaigns on ahead of the February 21, 2026 FCT Area Council Polls.

Urging opposition candidates not to waste their resources prosecuting an election they already lost, Wike said the exercise will be a referendum on the achievements of the Tinubu administration and those of his opponents.

He said those who are with the president would be running based on their records, and advised that no one should accuse the government of rigging the polls when the results do not go their way, saying with the projects on the ground, it is obvious that the election has already been won and lost.

He said, “We will continue to do the best under the Renewed Hope agenda for the interest of our country, for the interest of Abuja

“I don’t know, those who want to run elections in the Area Councils, I don’t know what they will preach to the people, but those who are with us, they have the opportunity to tell the people what we have done.

“So, let people not waste their money. The result is known by what we have shown, so that when you fail, you would not say you were rigged. No, look at the rigging here now. The projects are the rigging. When you provide what the people want, everything is gone.

“So, those of you who are my friends, I don’t know where you are running. But my friends, we will come out and tell the people, look at the roads, look at the bus terminals, look at the schools. All these works are coming now, where are they coming from?”

Wike lamented that the 16-kilometre road was awarded in 2014 at the cost of N7 billion but was executed and completed by the current administration at N31 billion due to inflation and variation.

He said that the completion of the project was in line with Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, to complete ongoing projects that would impact the lives and economy of the people.

Mr Richard Dauda, acting Executive Secretary, Federal Capital Territory Development Authority, said the INEX was the primary road that bound the inner development corridor of the northern flank of the city.

Dauda said that the full scope of the road in the Abuja Master Plan from Maitama to ONEX was a 32.5-kilometre, 10-lane expressway.

He said that the road was planned to consist of two main carriageways of three lanes each and two service carriageways of two lanes each.

“The Master Plan provides that the expressway commences at Maitama by the IBB Golf Course, traverses through the Central Area, passing between the National Mosque and the Yar’adua Centre in Phase I and continues through Phase II of the city to Wuye and Dakibiyu Districts.

“It then proceeds to Phase III and Phase IV, through the Idu Industrial Area and terminates at ONEX,” he said.

He said that the road was being developed in stages, with the first phase being the right-hand carriageway from Ring Road II to Ring Road III, adding that the second stage was the section being inaugurated

2027: El-Rufai not God to decide Tinubu’s fate, Nigerians will, says analyst

Public affairs analyst, Usman Okai Austin, has berated former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, over his recent political comments, describing him as a bitter ex-governor desperate for relevance.

Austin, in a statement on Tuesday, urged El-Rufai to stop acting like God, warning that only Nigerians, not any individual, will determine the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.

His reaction followed El-Rufai’s claim that President Bola Tinubu would not win re-election in 2027.

Describing El-Rufai as “pure sour grapes” and “ego-driven,” Okai wrote on his Facebook page: “El-Rufai doesn’t care about Nigeria, he cares about Nasir El-Rufai. Let Nigerians decide Tinubu’s fate in 2027, not El-Rufai, who talks like God and tries to usurp the people’s power.”

The analyst further asserted that El-Rufai’s political influence had been systematically eroded by his successor, Governor Uba Sani, noting that the former governor had miscalculated by assuming Sani’s loyalty would be unconditional after endorsing him.

“This is the same El-Rufai who manipulated his childhood friend, Uba Sani, into becoming his Chief of Staff, then weaponised him against Shehu Sani, despite the fact that Uba and Shehu are brothers.

“Blood proved thicker than water,” he wrote.

Describing El-Rufai’s fall as “poetic justice,” Okai painted a picture of a man once feared, now discarded.

“Once a kingmaker, he is now a discarded pawn — used, dumped, and left seething with rage.”

He also referenced El-Rufai’s controversial ministerial nomination, which was rejected during Senate screening, as an event he termed an “unprecedented disgrace.”

Adding insult to injury, Uba Sani reportedly disregarded El-Rufai’s preferred nominee for Kaduna’s ministerial slot and instead nominated his candidate.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Okai noted, appeared to have completely sidelined the former governor.

“There were no calls, no reconciliation. Just cold, calculated disregard,” Okai wrote.

El-Rufai’s reaction, according to the analyst, has been one of public outbursts and media interviews.

Questioning if anyone is still listening, Okai said, “Now, El-Rufai is on a revenge tour, granting interviews, crying betrayal, and desperately trying to explain himself.”

The post further criticised El-Rufai’s role in turning Kaduna into Nigeria’s first Muslim-Muslim ticket state, accusing him of fuelling religious imbalance and overseeing widespread insecurity.

“He had the audacity to advise Tinubu to replicate his divisive strategy.

“But Tinubu outplayed him. Shettima got the VP slot. The ministerial dream collapsed.”

“But Tinubu outplayed him. Shettima got the VP slot. The ministerial dream collapsed.”

Okai also recalled El-Rufai’s history of political conflict, citing his attacks on former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Musa Yar’Adua, and his habit of replacing political allies with loyal family members.

“Had Tinubu made him a minister, or had Uba Sani remained his puppet, El-Rufai would be singing his praises today.

“But now? He’s just another bitter ex-governor, thrashing in the political gutter, screaming for relevance.”

Tinubu withholds assent to NASS Library Trust Fund, cites legal, fiscal concerns

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declined to sign the National Assembly Library Trust Fund (Establishment) Amendment Bill, 2025 into law, citing constitutional, policy, and fiscal concerns.

The bill, which seeks to transform the National Assembly Library Trust Fund into the National Assembly Resource Centre, was returned to the House of Representatives on Monday with a formal letter from the President, read at plenary by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.

While acknowledging the bill’s good intentions, President Tinubu raised reservations about certain provisions, describing them as inconsistent with existing federal statutes and administrative policies.

“While the bill pursues commendable objectives, some of its provisions are inconsistent with established laws and policies of the Federal Government of Nigeria,” the President wrote.

Among the areas of concern highlighted were the proposed funding structure for institutions under the National Assembly, taxation of federal entities, remuneration issues within the public service, and clauses relating to age and service limits.

He warned that allowing the bill to pass in its current form could set “an unsustainable precedence” with negative implications for governance and the broader public interest.

Although the letter did not go into detail on the most contentious provisions, President Tinubu emphasized that the bill, as currently drafted, poses legal and fiscal risks with potential ripple effects across the public sector.

He urged lawmakers to revisit and revise the bill to ensure it aligns with constitutional requirements and sound fiscal practices.

“I trust the House of Representatives will take appropriate steps to resolve the issues identified in this legislation,” Tinubu stated.

    • 150km rural roads built in FCT, says Wike

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has again reassured Nigerians of his administration’s resolve to prioritise infrastructure development in all parts of the country.

He said that projects will be executed in a balanced and inclusive manner to uplift communities, especially in the hinterlands.

Speaking on Monday at the inauguration of the newly completed 15-kilometre A2 – Pai Town Road in the Kwali Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), President Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to equitable development and national integration.

His host FCT Minister Nyesom Wike attributed the over 150 kilometers of rural roads built by the FCT Administration across the six area councils to the support given by the President

“This administration will continue to prioritize infrastructure in all zones. We will ensure that development is not lopsided, but balanced, inclusive, and targeted at lifting lives”, the President declared.

The road, which connects the Abuja – Lokoja Expressway to Pai Town, is part of the 150 kilometres of roads completed across the six FCT councils since President Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023.

The President noted that infrastructure only holds value when it directly benefits citizens, improves livelihoods, and creates opportunities.

He said: “The road, the infrastructure development, means nothing if you don’t develop it to the benefit of our people. Indeed, this progress will continue to elevate our lives.”

Highlighting the strategic importance of the project, Tinubu said the road creates a vital corridor for economic and social advancement.

“The commissioning of this newly constructed road… is both symbolic and strategic. It opens a new corridor for agriculture, commerce, education, and mobility—all necessary to strengthen our national economy from the grassroots up”, he said.

The president also acknowledged the longstanding neglect of many rural communities and said his government is determined to reverse that trend, saying “rural communities such as Pai make important contributions to Nigeria’s social and economic fabric, especially in food production and local enterprises, but their potential has been hindered by poor road access, isolation and neglect for far too long. Today, that narrative is changing.”

Commending the FCT minister for prioritising rural development, Tinubu urged residents to take ownership of the infrastructure and protect it as a tool for community advancement.

“You are doing commendable work in the underserved rural areas. Let this road serve as a pathway to growth and a bridge to a better life for farmers, traders, students, and youth”, he told the Minister.

On the age-old challenge of tension between farmers and livestock herders, calling instead for collaboration and economic symbiosis.

“On my way, I observed the need for our great farmers and livestock owners to establish the opportunity for grazing and do what is necessary,” he said.

He assured the Pai community that the Federal Government would support efforts to turn potential sources of conflict into platforms for prosperity, assuring “we will help you, we will work with you. We will convert what used to be a liability and a source of conflict into a means of prosperity.”

The road project, he noted, complements such efforts by improving access to markets and facilitating economic activity in previously hard-to-reach rural settlements.

The FCT minister said some of the 150 roads so far constructed by the FCTA had already been inaugurated.

Wike reiterated the administration’s resolve to continue investing in infrastructure under the Renewed Hope Agenda, with the aim of transforming the FCT into a globally competitive capital city.

He lauded Tinubu for coming to PAI, adding: “Today, of all the roads inaugurated, this, for me, I consider very, very important. I recall that when I came to see you, I said, Mr. President, it would be very, very fine if you can make out time to visit one, at least, of the rural roads and see the people how joyous they will be.

Wike said: “I’m sure if you look directly opposite you, you will see that the people are very, very, very happy. This also tells us that your emphasis is not just to improve infrastructure in the city, it is also to improve life and other infrastructure in the satellite town. I will state here for record purposes so that we will understand what you’ve done since you came on May 29, 2023. What you’ve done in the rural areas.

“The number of roads you have constructed and the number of roads you are still constructing. I don’t want to talk about the issue of security and education. But let me tell you the history of this road. Through the Federal Council, we are awarded the contract for Pai, the boundary between Pai and Gomani.

“So, when we were coming for the fly-off, I was asking, where are we going to fly off this road? We are past 10-12 kilometers. So, when I got to the boundary between Pai and Gomani, from that to Gomani is 13 kilometers that is ongoing, before December, they will also be completed.

So, I now ask, how do we get to that Pai, when this road is not constructed? It doesn’t make sense. All we would have done are okay, let us do this, later we can go from Pai to Gomani. I thank God, today we are commissioning it.

“The contractor assured us that he will do everything. I said, can you include it in the celebration of Mr. President’s second year in office? And he said, yes, that he will use this to show his capacity and capability. I also want to thank them. Now, from Gomani to Yangoji is another 13 kilometers, which we have told the managing director of this company to make sure he starts work from Gomani to Yangoji. At the end of the day, At only this stretch you would have done about 45 kilometers of the roads in this area.

“I want to inform you that all those roads have all been commissioned. All those six roads have all been commissioned.”

“Today, I will read out what you have done so that everybody can hear, so that those who are doubting Thomas can go and check. These roads they are talking about, is it in existence or just mere propaganda?

“In 2024, you approved the construction of six emergency roads, and I will name them. One is the construction of Paikon Kore-Ibwa Road in Gwagwalada, nine kilometers. That road has been commissioned.

“Today, we are in A2 to pai. Let me say, for this year’s commissioning, Your Excellency, we will be commissioning 10 kilometers of Aguma Palace-Radio-New Market Road in Gwagwalada. And then, Nyanya-Karshi dual Carriageway, 18 kilometers. We are doing the commission of 7.4 kilometers of Old Ushafa Road and rehabilitation of Lower Usuma Dam.

“We are very happy. So, we have done, if you calculate all, and the ongoing roads, and the ones completed, within the satellite towns, you’ve done not less than 150 kilometers of roads.

“You have been able to open most of the roads. If you came here before, you would have wondered, assuming there is crime, how will police enter here? How will security men enter here? It will not be possible.”
