LG crisis: Osun Rep member slams Adeleke over alleged blackmail of Tinubu, Oyetola, AGF

A member of the House of Representatives representing Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency, Hon. Oluwole Oke, has criticised Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke for allegedly blackmailing President Bola Tinubu and key federal officials over the ongoing local government leadership crisis in the state.

Oke, who chairs the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, condemned Adeleke’s actions, accusing him of deliberately causing hardship in the state by politicising the council leadership dispute.

The crisis stems from conflicting mandates issued to local government executives. The Court of Appeal recently reinstated All Progressives Congress (APC) officials elected in October 2022, while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) conducted its council elections in February 2025, deepening the impasse.

In response, the Osun State House of Assembly labelled the reinstated APC chairmen as impostors and called on President Tinubu to stop the Minister of Finance, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Attorney-General of the Federation, and Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, from disbursing allocations to them.

Reacting to the Assembly’s position, Oke said Adeleke’s administration is engaging in “blame games” rather than finding lasting solutions. He warned that the continued politicisation of the issue could undermine governance and public trust in Osun.

He said, “Please stop blackmailing Mr President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Osun State APC Leader, Isiaka Gboyega Oyetola, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN and CBN Governor on this matter.

“It is your Government that is inflicting pains on us, the beneficiaries of Local Government Administration in Osun State, by not doing the right thing.”

He disclosed that “One of the reasons I left PDP under your (Adeleke) leadership is because you don’t listen to advice. Those people working with you do not mean well for you.

“I spoke to you and advised you on what to do on the Court of Appeal Judgment reinstating elected APC Council Chairmen, Vice Chairmen and Councillors, but you ignored me. Only an illiterate lawyer will advise you contrary to what the Court of Appeal ruled. That PDP/OSSIEC approached the wrong Court. What else do you need to hear, sir?”

He noted that the window for the Osun Government to ask for a stay of execution and appeal the verdict reinstating APC excos at the Supreme Court is closing, and the beneficiaries will not go to court on the APP case on the matter.

He advised that Adeleke should direct the Local Government workers to resume their duties and embrace the APC elected officials by working together.

Equally, he advised the state electoral body to issue 180 days to conduct a fresh LG election if APC elected officials are not asking for completion of their 3-year Mandate.

“All the PDP chairmanship aspirants, vice and councillors spent a fortune to participate in the ill-fated election, and most of them are now suffering hopelessly. The governor can add them to the list of his SAs or SSAs.”

Tinubu confers CFR honour on Dangiwa Umar for role in defending democracy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred the national honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) on retired Colonel Abubakar Dangiwa Umar in recognition of his courageous defence of democratic values during Nigeria’s military era and his enduring contributions to the country’s democratic journey.

The announcement came on Thursday during President Tinubu’s working visit to Kaduna State, where he commissioned a series of developmental projects and unveiled 100 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses to boost the state’s public transportation system.

Addressing dignitaries and the public at the event, the President acknowledged that Col. Umar was omitted from the list of honourees mentioned in his Democracy Day address at the National Assembly on June 12.

“Let me use this opportunity to correct an omission. Some of those people that I missed out on during the June 12 broadcast at the National Assembly is Colonel Dangiwa. Today, let me correct that by honouring him with national recognition of CFR”, President Tinubu said.

Col. Umar, a former military governor of Kaduna State, gained national prominence for his vocal opposition to the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history.

At great personal risk, he pushed within military circles for the validation of Chief M.K.O. Abiola’s victory and the restoration of democratic governance.

His stance led to his brief detention by the military regime.

He later resigned his commission and devoted himself to civic activism, eventually founding the Movement for Unity and Progress political party.

In honouring Col. Umar, President Tinubu said the recognition reflects a national consensus on the significance of those who stood on the side of democracy during Nigeria’s most uncertain moments.

Akume salutes Tinubu, vows to lead peace-building efforts in Benue

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his prompt and compassionate visit to Benue State in the wake of renewed violence, pledging to rally all critical stakeholders in a concerted effort to restore lasting peace in the state.

In a statement issued on Thursday by Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the SGF, Segun Imohiosen, Akume hailed the President’s decision to personally visit Benue, despite a demanding schedule, as “a courageous and commendable gesture,” demonstrating a clear commitment to ending the cycles of violence plaguing parts of the North Central state.

“The President’s visit was not just symbolic. It was a powerful signal to the people of Benue that their pains are not being ignored. Mr. President engaged in frank discussions with traditional rulers, political leaders, security operatives, and civil society actors in a town hall meeting aimed at charting a new course for peace and stability”, Senator Akume said.

Following the President’s visit, Senator Akume disclosed that he had been directed to coordinate the formation of a high-level committee of key Benue stakeholders to fast-track peace efforts and interface directly with President Tinubu at a forthcoming meeting in Abuja.

According to him, the committee will include former Governors of Benue State, the paramount traditional rulers, the Tor Tiv and the Och’Idoma, as well as the SGF himself and other notable stakeholders.

Their mandate is to develop a practical, inclusive, and lasting framework to end the bloodshed and communal hostilities that have plagued the state for years.

“This is a directive I take very seriously. I assure Mr. President and the people of Benue that I will work hand-in-hand with all critical stakeholders—local communities, civil society organisations, security agencies, and our revered traditional rulers—to build a roadmap for reconciliation and sustained peace”, the SGF stated.

Senator Akume, a former governor of Benue State, acknowledged the complex socio-political and ethnic dimensions of the state’s conflicts but maintained that solutions are within reach through honest dialogue, mutual understanding, and political will.

“Achieving sustainable peace requires a united effort. The time for finger-pointing is over. We must now focus on solutions, together,” he said.

The committee’s establishment is part of President Tinubu’s broader Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasises peace-building, national unity, and inclusive development.

The administration is prioritising security and reconciliation in conflict-prone areas, particularly in states like Benue, where herder-farmer clashes and communal tensions have led to devastating loss of life and livelihoods.

Senator Akume’s latest statement signals the beginning of a coordinated federal-state response mechanism anchored on stakeholder engagement, local ownership, and high-level political commitment.

The SGF concluded by urging all parties to rise above partisan divides and work together to restore the dignity and security of the people of Benue.

“Peace is not a gift; it is a responsibility,” Akume said. “We owe it to our children and future generations to end this cycle of violence once and for all.”
