NIWA boss denies attack claim on Tinubu, warns peddlers of fake news

The Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Asiwaju Bola Oyebamiji, has denied allegations that his supporters attacked President Bola Tinubu following a recent visit by Governor Ademola Adeleke, his brother Adedeji Adeleke, and afrobeat star David Adeleke (Davido) to his residence.

Oyebamiji, a leading governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), issued a strong warning to those spreading false information, urging them to desist from deliberate misinformation.

In a statement released through his campaign coordinator, Adebayo Adedeji, Oyebamiji described the claims as “mischievous and cruel,” alleging they were the handiwork of desperate politicians seeking to cause division.

“My supporters had and have no reason to attack President Tinubu over a harmless private visit. The accusations are nothing more than an insanely sponsored narrative by rejected political actors,” the statement read.

Oyebamiji reaffirmed his loyalty to President Tinubu and commitment to the APC, urging the public to disregard what he called baseless propaganda.

  • Senator Abubakar Kyari: Driving food security under Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda

Senator Abubakar Kyari: Driving food security under Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda

    By Joe Mutah

When President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office in May 2023, he met a nation grappling with inflation, food insecurity, and climate-related disruptions to agriculture. The urgency to act was clear—and the president responded by prioritising agriculture and food security as a cornerstone of his Renewed Hope Agenda. A key early move was renaming the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, signaling a decisive shift in policy emphasis: from bureaucratic routine to national food sufficiency and resilience.

But institutional change alone was not enough. The Tinubu administration needed capable leadership to translate vision into results. That responsibility fell on Senator Abubakar Kyari, a seasoned lawmaker, administrator, and grassroots mobiliser. Supported by Minister of State Senator Sabi Abdullahi, Kyari assumed leadership of the ministry in 2023, at a time when food inflation was surging, insecurity threatened farming communities, and millions of Nigerians were struggling with the cost of essential staples.

Kyari quickly emerged as a steady, data-driven, and reform-oriented minister. His leadership has been instrumental in aligning the national agricultural policy with President Tinubu’s broader economic goals. A pivotal move was the president’s declaration of a State of Emergency on Food Security, which elevated agriculture to the level of national security. This opened the door for inter-ministerial collaboration, faster funding approvals, and urgent interventions across the entire food value chain.

One of the flagship programmes under this new urgency is the National Agricultural Growth Scheme and Agro-Pocket (NAGS-AP), supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB). The scheme has supported over 500,000 smallholder farmers with subsidised inputs—including improved seeds, fertilisers, agrochemicals, and extension services. For the first time, digital payment systems were deployed to ensure transparency and eliminate leakages, restoring public confidence in government-led agricultural programmes.

The targeted crops—rice, maize, cassava, sorghum, and wheat—were selected for their relevance to household consumption and national food needs. Focusing on these staples has already resulted in increased yields and expanded land under cultivation.

Recognising the need for all-season food production, Kyari leveraged Dry Season Farming as a strategic pillar. In November 2023, the minister launched the Dry Season Wheat Programme in Jigawa State, targeting 120,000 hectares and 240,000 farmers. This was followed by similar programmes for rice, maize and cassava, covering an additional 200,000 hectares and involving 400,000 farmers. These efforts were funded through a mix of federal support and a $134 million intervention from the AfDB, with the government covering the bulk of input costs.

This intervention was not only timely—it was transformational. By removing cost barriers, expanding irrigation infrastructure, and enhancing extension support, Kyari’s ministry unlocked a new frontier for dry season cultivation. As a result, food supply began to stabilise, and price volatility moderated in key markets.

In direct response to rising food prices, President Tinubu ordered the release of 42,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains—including maize, millet, and sorghum—from national reserves. He also directed the release of 60,000 metric tonnes of rice through millers for distribution. Senator Kyari ensured these grains reached intended beneficiaries, bringing relief to millions of Nigerians.

The most impactful policy measure yet was the 150-Day Duty-Free Import Window for Food Commodities, which suspended tariffs, duties, and taxes on maize, husked brown rice, wheat, and cowpeas. These imports were subject to recommended retail pricing to prevent market exploitation. This partnership between the Federal Government and private-sector players had an immediate impact—prices of key commodities began to stabilise within months.

Kyari also tackled one of agriculture’s most pressing structural issues: mechanisation. In early 2024, the ministry signed an MoU between the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) and AGCOMS International Trading Ltd to procure 2,000 John Deere tractors, and other implements such as ploughs and trailers. The agreement included plans for a tractor assembly plant in Nigeria, signaling a long-term commitment to mechanised farming, job creation, and technology transfer.

This intervention is part of the National Agricultural Mechanisation Programme (NAMP), a bold initiative to replace outdated tools with modern machinery, particularly in rural areas.

To support food production, President Tinubu also directed the free distribution of 2.1 million bags of fertiliser to smallholder farmers across Nigeria. Implemented on Kyari’s watch, this move eliminated a major input bottleneck and ensured that farmers could plant in time—leading to higher productivity and better harvests.

In a bid to improve targeting and eliminate fraud in government programmes, Kyari’s ministry signed an MoU with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to establish a comprehensive Farmer Register. This biometric database, linked to the National Identity Number (NIN), ensures that only genuine farmers receive support. The pilot phase targets 2 million farmers, with plans to expand to 6 million. This system will help streamline interventions, track progress, and eliminate “ghost” beneficiaries.

Beyond food staples, the Tinubu agricultural strategy also emphasises structural transformation. The Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) project, in partnership with the AfDB, IFAD, and the Islamic Development Bank, is developing infrastructure and attracting private agribusinesses to rural areas. SAPZ aims to boost rural incomes, especially for youth and women, while improving food and nutritional security.

Another transformative project is ACReSAL (Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes), supported by the World Bank, which focuses on restoring degraded land, especially in Northern Nigeria. The project aligns with Nigeria’s climate goals and promotes climate-smart agriculture, a necessity in the face of rising temperatures and unpredictable rainfall.

Taken together, these programmes represent one of the most comprehensive agricultural reform packages in Nigeria’s recent history. And while challenges remain—especially in the areas of logistics and state-level implementation – the results so far are encouraging.

Food inflation is slowing. Farmers are returning to their fields. Input availability has improved. Mechanisation is scaling. Market confidence is rising. And above all, agriculture is no longer treated as a welfare issue—but as a viable driver of national economic growth.

Kyari’s stewardship at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is a clear example of what focused leadership can achieve in a short time. His calm, strategic, and inclusive approach is not only delivering results—it is restoring faith in public institutions. Kyari understands that true food security is not just about more food, but about affordable, accessible, and sustainable food systems that serve all Nigerians.

Under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, agriculture has been given a new lease of life. And thanks to Kyari’s leadership, that hope is already becoming reality.

  • ‘Why we back Tinubu, APC men in 2027’

‘Why we back Tinubu, APC men in 2027’

Traders in Alaba International market, the biggest electronics and electrical market in Africa, have declared support for the second term ambition of President Bola Tinubu and all All Progressives Congress (APC), candidates for 2027.

Speaking in an interview with reporters, President General of Alaba International Amalgamated Council of Sectional Heads, the umbrella body of all associations in the market, Chief Camilus Amajuoyi,  said the founding fathers and traders have resolved to change their voting pattern.

According to him, over the years, the parties they have been voting for have not been of any help to them.

He said they are living in Lagos, doing their businesses in Lagos, their children are living in Lagos and their property are also in Lagos, adding that common sense demands that they should align with the party in power in Lagos State.

Speaking, he said: “… For more than 12 years now, traders in Alaba International market have been voting differently from the party in power in Lagos State.

“Because of that, we are seen or perceived as people in the opposition. With our huge population, we have more than one million registered members. As you know, politics is a game of number. We have voted in federal and State House members in Ojo Federal Constituency. But at the end of the voting season, these candidates would not come back to say thank you or show any appreciation. Even the dividends of democracy from the people we voted into office, we don’t see. So, we are victims of use and dump by the political parties and candidates that we have been voting for. That is the reason I said at the beginning that Alaba International traders have woken up,” he said.

Amajuoyi added that not voting for the party in power in the last election had its consequences but it is all in the past.

“The effect is natural. By not voting for the party in power in Lagos State, we are being denied a lot of things. All the things that we are supposed to get from the government of Lagos State were not forthcoming. For example, all the trunk C roads in Ojo Local Government has been tarred or interlocked and every street has been reconstructed or rehabilitated, but the road that links to Alaba from Ojo-Igede to Ajangbadi has been left out without attention even at our pleas to the Governor, Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Works.

“The revenue that Lagos State and Ojo Local government including the Federal Government make from Alaba International market is more than enough to tar the road that leads to the market, but the reverse is the case because we are seen as people in the opposition and enemies of government.

“On the part of the traders, we are losing hundreds of millions of naira because of the dilapidated state of the road. When they clear our containers at the ports, when they get to Alaba road, the containers would fall and the goods would waste. Mind you most of us borrow money from banks to import. When that happen, whatever was used for collateral would be confiscated by the banks and before you know it, traders that were controlling hundreds of millions of naira would become bankrupt. Some even become sick and die because of the pressure and frustration. We have continually appealed to the Lagos State government to link the Alaba road to the Alabarago road to ease the traffic, but after series of promises, it has not been done,” added Amajuoyi,

In addition,  Amajuoyi noted some reasons why traders in Alaba are equally affected in building structure adjustments.

“We have suffered series of demolition in Alaba, ranging from shops to plazas in the name of the property being defective or distressed. But when you look very well, you would see that the plazas and shops were built not more than two years ago which means they are solid and strong. Then you begin to wonder what is happening. We have also succeeded in building a clinic in Alaba and have pleaded with the government of Lagos State to help us equip it, but up till now nothing has been done. We have written several letters to the government on that, but to no avail. Well, when you are in the opposition, a lot of things that are not too palatable would be happening to you. So, that is the situation that we have found ourselves by voting for other political parties.

“Having said that, it is the reason we decided that we must change our voting pattern. With all that we are going through, none of those people that we have voted into power either in the past or in the present has come to our aid. The same thing with the political parties that they used as platforms to win the elections. The only party that has started showing concern is the All Progressives Congress (APC).They have started fixing the road that lead from Masafejo, Ilufe to Chemist bus stop. Also they have come to survey Ojo-Igede road (Olojo Drive), and they have also assured us that if we vote for them, all that we are requesting from them would be met. The party candidate for the forthcoming local government election, Hon. Muhabat TitilolaRufai has assured us that if we vote her into office ,she will personally take us to Alausa for our demands to be met,” Amajuoyi said.

Continuing,  he stated: “The founding fathers of Alaba International market, the presidents of sections, the leaders and stakeholders of Alaba International have resolved that henceforth, all the traders will be voting for the party in power in Lagos State. We have realized our mistakes and we are joining the APC party for the benefit of traders at Alaba. We are living and doing our businesses in Lagos. Our children schools in Lagos and our property are in Lagos. So, common sense demands that we should work with the party in power in Lagos State, so that our plights and other problems would be attended to.

“As the council election is drawing near, we are pleading with the party to continue with the tradition of using an Igbo person as a vice chairman in Ojo. We have absolute confidence in the leadership of the chairman of APC in Lagos State, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi. We also want to use this opportunity to appreciate the amiable and resourceful governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat for the way they are transforming the state into a smart city. We are assuring them of our unalloyed support and loyalty,”  Amajuoyi concluded.

I was online last week when I stumbled upon a clip that I had first seen a long time ago. There was President Bola Tinubu (GCFR), years before his presidency, defending a decision against detractors that perfectly encapsulates why I call him the King of the Long Game:

“….When I invested Lagos State funds in Econet, they criticised me. But I used N4 billion to bring back N19 billion to Lagos State. So, who really made the better decision? The truth is, when you’re superior to them in knowledge, in intellectual capacity, in professionalism, they do not engage on the issues. Instead, they try to drag you into the mud. And when you wrestle with a pig, you get stained.

…when will I rest from politics? I’ll rest when I free Nigeria.”

That video was recorded circa 2009, before Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), five years before the All Progressives Congress (APC) was formed, and 14 years before he was elected our President. For that long and I dare say even before, he has been working towards his goal. He played the long game. Many things have changed since then but his intention remains the same – to free Nigeria.

To achieve his lifelong dream, he is once again playing the long game. This is evident by the policies his administration is pursuing.

Back to that clip, it reminded me why transformative leadership often looks like recklessness to short-term thinkers. The King of the Long Game understands something critics miss: the most impactful policies require time to mature, like investments that compound over decades.

    The Patience of Visionaries

In our hyperconnected world, where instant gratification often drives decision-making and campaign cycles are every three years, we sometimes forget that the most transformative policies require time to germinate, grow, and ultimately transform lives. The question that should guide every good leader is not ‘what can we achieve by next year?’ but rather ‘what seeds are we planting today that will yield a harvest for generations?’

This long-term perspective is what distinguishes truly visionary leaders from mere administrators. Take Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s introduction of free primary education in the Western Region in 1955. Critics called it ‘financially reckless’’, ‘politically-motivated’, and ‘economically unsustainable’. Yet, that single policy decision created the most educated generation in Nigeria’s history, producing the doctors, engineers, lawyers, and business leaders who would drive the nation’s development for decades.

The children who walked barefoot to those free schools in the 1950s and 1960s became the professors, CEOs, and innovators of the 1980s and 1990s. They raised families who valued education, created businesses that employed thousands, and built the intellectual foundation upon which modern Nigeria stands. Awolowo understood that education is not just a policy, it’s an investment in human capital that compounds over generations.

As Dr. Myles Munroe once said, “Managers think of the next position. Leaders think of the next generation”. That distinction could not be more relevant today.

Similarly, during Tinubu’s Lagos governorship (1999-2007), every major reform faced fierce criticism. Free WAEC and NECO examinations? “Unsustainable”. Jigi Bola? “Pointless”. The Health Insurance Scheme? “Poorly timed”. The BRT system? “A waste of resources”.

Today, Lagos remains Nigeria’s economic powerhouse precisely because of these “controversial” investments. The young professionals driving Lagos’s economy often trace their success to policies that removed barriers when their families couldn’t afford examination fees or healthcare

    NELFUND: The Latest Seed

Now we’re witnessing history repeat itself with the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). Since launching on May 24, 2024, it has disbursed N56.85 billion to 298,124 students across 198 institutions- with a remarkable 92 per cent approval rate on over 550,000 applications.

Critics ask why fund education when unemployment is high? Why invest in long-term programs when immediate needs press? This perspective fundamentally misunderstands transformative change. The infrastructure we build today serves this generation. The education we fund today serves the next generation.

Every NELFUND beneficiary represents a future innovator who will not just fil existing jobs, but create new industries. When a brilliant student from rural Kebbi can study engineering debt-free, or a young woman from Cross River can pursue medicine with the guarantee of debt forgiveness after five years of Nigerian service, we are not just changing individual lives- we are building the human capital foundation for economic diversification.

    The Digital Multiplier

What makes this moment unprecedented is the convergence of educational investment with Nigeria’s digital revolution. NELFUND beneficiaries will graduate into a Nigeria where fibre optic cables reach every corner, where 5Gnetworks eliminate geographic barriers to opportunity.

A computer science student in Makurdi can now collaborate with MIT researchers, access Oxford’s online courses, and launch a fintech startup serving West Africa from Nigeria. This is the “digital dividend the exponential returns when brilliant minds have global access through reliable connectivity.

Our young entrepreneurs already demonstrate this potential. From Flutterwave to Etap to Jumia, Nigeria’s digital natives build global solutions. Imagine their capabilities with universal broadband access and comprehensive digital literacy.

    The Compound Effect

What makes President Tinubu’s approach particularly powerful is the compound effect of his policies. Educated parents prioritise their children’s education. Economic opportunities in one generation create investment capital for the next. When combined with digital infrastructure, this compound effect becomes exponential.

The children benefiting from NELFUND today will likely send their own children to better schools, funded by the opportunities their education provided. They will start businesses employing others, pay taxes, fund public services, and contribute to a virtuous development cycle spanning generations.

This same thinking is visible in the recent passage of the long-debated National Tax Reform Package, designed to streamline collections, reduce burdens for SMEs, and improve compliance. Its impact will not only be immediate also clear the fiscal underbrush needed to grow a broader, fairer revenue base for years to come.

    The Harvest Awaits

Critics of patient, strategic leadership often ask for immediate results in a complex world requiring generational thinking. They want quarterly returns on policies designed for decadal impact. President Tinubu understands that true transformation takes time-but in our digital age, it can happen faster than ever before.

The Econet investment that drew criticism returned nearly five times Lagos State’s initial stake. The BRT system that seemed extravagant now moves millions efficiently across Africa’s largest economy. The free examinations that appeared financially reckless unlocked countless minds that drive Nigeria’s progress today.

Just this weekend, President Tinubu inaugurated the first completed section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, a bold infrastructural project long dismissed as “impossible” by doubters. When finished, it will connect nine coastal states, boost regional commerce, boost tourism and become a permanent artery for national development- another long bet already taking shape. Real estate proprietors have begun their harvest.

Nigeria’s future is bright not because of wishful thinking, but because of deliberate policy choices combined with digital infrastructure that amplifies human potential. The King of the Long Game has planted the seeds. The digital highways are being built. The soil is fertile. The harvest awaits, and it will be sweeter and more bountiful than we can imagine.

And perhaps this is the clearest sign of all that for President Tinubu, it is not just politics; it is purpose. He will rest, as he said, only when he has freed Nigeria.
