Tinubu tasks AFCSC graduates to lead Nigeria’s security reforms

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has charged newly graduated officers of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College (AFCSC), Jaji, to take the lead in Nigeria’s ongoing security transformation, as the nation confronts evolving threats ranging from terrorism and insurgency to cyber warfare and climate-induced conflicts.

The President gave the charge on Friday while speaking as Special Guest of Honour at the Joint Graduation Ceremony of Senior Course 47 and Junior Course 100, held at the Major General Bulama Biu Parade Ground, Jaji Military Cantonment, Kaduna State.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, Tinubu described the ceremony as a reaffirmation of the enduring values of discipline, patriotism and selfless service that define the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Congratulating the graduating officers, the President said their successful completion of the rigorous courses reflected years of sacrifice, resilience and commitment to national duty.

According to a statement issued by Special Adviser to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, the President noted that their graduation coincided with a critical period of transformation in the global and regional security environment, requiring a new generation of military leaders equipped with strategic insight and professional depth.

“Graduating today at this critical juncture in our national and global history places upon you a solemn duty. Traditional and non-traditional threats, ranging from terrorism and insurgency to cyber warfare, maritime insecurity and climate-induced conflicts, continue to evolve in scope and complexity”, Tinubu said.

He stressed that addressing these challenges would require more than courage and tactical proficiency, underscoring the need for strategic foresight, inter-agency collaboration, and strict adherence to democratic values and the rule of law.

According to him, the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture, improving the welfare of the armed forces, and enhancing synergy among military, intelligence and civil institutions in the pursuit of peace and stability.

The President also commended the Armed Forces Command and Staff College for its long-standing role as a centre of excellence, noting that the institution has produced officers who have provided leadership in peace and conflict situations within Nigeria and across international peacekeeping missions under ECOWAS, the African Union and the United Nations.

He said the college’s blend of academic rigour, field training and multinational collaboration had continued to strengthen the nation’s defence and security framework.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to modernising the Armed Forces, Tinubu said ongoing reforms were focused on upgrading training infrastructure, enhancing operational capabilities and improving the living conditions of officers and their families.

He explained that these efforts were part of a broader agenda to build a safe, stable and prosperous Nigeria.

While emphasising unity within the military, the President reminded the graduating officers that they represent Nigeria’s diversity, bound together by a common oath to defend the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He cautioned that misinformation, ethnic tension and divisive narratives pose serious risks to national cohesion, urging the Armed Forces to remain professional, impartial and loyal to constitutional authority to sustain public confidence.

Charging the officers to see their graduation as a new beginning, Tinubu urged them to apply the leadership qualities, analytical skills and operational competence acquired at Jaji in service to the nation and humanity.

“Be bold in leadership, innovative in strategy and humble in service. Uphold integrity and discipline at all times, mentor those coming behind you, and never lose sight of the sacred trust the nation has placed in you,” he said.

Other members of the presidential entourage at the ceremony included former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom; Senator Jack Gyado; Professor Iorwuese Hagher; General Benedict Williams (retd); and Air Vice Marshal James Gbum (retd).

Tinubu clears N758billion pension liabilities, records 180% recoveries

Nigeria’s pension system entered a new phase of stability and accountability in 2025 as President Bola Tinubu approved the disbursement of N758 billion to clear outstanding pension liabilities. Also the National Pension Commission (PenCom) recorded a 180 per cent surge in recoveries from defaulting employers within one year.

Presenting a 365-day scorecard at the Pension Revolution Journalist Summit in Lagos, PenCom Director-General, Omolola Oloworaran, said the administration’s intervention marked a historic turning point in restoring confidence among pensioners and contributors, many of whom had waited years for entitlements dating back to 2007.

According to the Commission, long-standing pension increase arrears for Federal Government treasury-funded retirees have now been fully settled, while zero waiting time for payment of accrued pension rights was restored with effect from July 2025, ensuring retirees receive benefits as and when due.

As part of measures to improve benefit adequacy, PenCom introduced Pension Boost 1.0, which has added about N2.68 billion to monthly pension payments under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), easing pressure on retirees amid rising living costs.

The Director-General said the reforms were anchored on Pension Revolution 2.0, the most comprehensive overhaul of the pension industry since 2004, combining stronger regulation, tighter supervision, governance reforms and full digital automation of key pension processes, including pension clearance certificates, benefit processing and contribution remittances.

A major outcome of the reforms was a sharp rise in compliance by employers. PenCom disclosed that between January and November 2025, pension recoveries climbed to N4.04 billion, compared with N1.44 billion recorded in the entire 2024 financial year.

The Commission said N2.06 billion of the recoveries was recorded in the third quarter of 2025 alone, following a compliance circular that linked Pension Clearance Certificates to participation across the pension industry value chain.

Similarly, the value of Pension Clearance Certificates issued jumped significantly. While issuances averaged about ₦150 billion per quarter previously, the third quarter of 2025 recorded issuances of approximately ₦233 billion, signalling a shift in compliance behaviour.

Beyond compliance, PenCom also launched the PenCare Initiative, an industry-wide healthcare programme aimed at providing free and accessible medical care for low-income retirees, as well as the Pension Industry Leadership Council to deepen collaboration, accountability and innovation across the sector.

In a bid to expand pension coverage among informal sector workers, the Commission restructured and rebranded the Micro Pension Plan into the Personal Pension Plan, targeting artisans, traders, gig workers and creatives.  The plan introduces simplified onboarding, digital enrolment and the deployment of Accredited Pension Agents, expected to create thousands of new jobs for young Nigerians.

On governance, PenCom raised capital requirements for pension operators and tightened rules to eliminate shadow directorships, insisting that institutions managing Nigerians’ life savings must be transparent, well-capitalised and professionally run.

The Director-General said the reforms signalled that the pension revolution was no longer a promise but an irreversible process, stressing that retirement security is a right that must be protected.

“With these reforms, Nigeria is building a pension system that is inclusive, resilient, transparent and trusted,” she said.

Analysts say the reforms, backed by strong presidential support, have repositioned the pension industry as a stabilising force in the economy while restoring dignity and certainty to retirement for millions of Nigerians.

Tinubu Media Force hails pro-market reforms amid Dangote–regulators dispute

The Tinubu Media Force has reaffirmed its unwavering support for a free, competitive, and well-regulated market structure as Nigeria navigates ongoing disagreements involving major conglomerates and regulatory agencies.

Speaking on the issue, Gbenga Abiola, National Coordinator of the Tinubu Media Force, emphasised that regulators must stand as transparent and independent checks against the excesses of market dominance, particularly where monopolistic tendencies threaten competition, distort pricing, and expose Nigerians to exploitation.

According to Abiola, regulatory agencies are not obstacles to industrial growth but stabilizing institutions designed to prevent the concentration of market power in the hands of a few.

He noted that when such dominance goes unchecked, it leads to artificial scarcity, hoarding, price manipulation, and the exclusion of alternative market players, creating a non-competitive market structure that ultimately works against Nigerian consumers.

The National Coordinator further highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decisive intervention through the stoppage of the 15 percent import duty on petroleum products, describing it as a bold and strategic move aimed at restoring balance to the downstream sector.

Abiola explained that by removing this duty, the administration dismantled artificial barriers that fueled fuel queues, speculative price increases, and supply restrictions, while opening the market to broader participation.

He stated that this policy shift reflects the administration’s clear opposition to monopolistic control and its commitment to open competitiveness.

With the import duty removed, Abiola noted that petroleum pricing is now better guided by demand and supply realities rather than restrictive practices, ensuring a more transparent pricing framework that protects Nigerians from exploitative costs.

Gbenga Abiola stressed that these reforms align squarely with the Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises consumer protection, regulatory strength, and private-sector-led growth without favoritism.

He added that the Tinubu administration is deliberately empowering regulators to enforce rules fairly while deploying market-friendly policies that stabilize prices, improve supply, and strengthen investor confidence.

In conclusion, Abiola said the Tinubu Media Force commends President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership across all sectors of the country, describing it as strategic, decisive, systematic, and people-oriented.

He noted that the administration’s interventions in market regulation, petroleum pricing, and institutional reforms reflect a deliberate commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerians while building a resilient, competitive, and inclusive economy.

Over 250 senior citizens in Edo State have praised the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS).

They have benefitted from the N1.9billion disbursed through RHIESS.

They said the Federal Government had shown commitment to their welfare.

The senior citizens spoke at the Government House, Benin City, at the Renewed Hope Initiative’s annual social investment programmes aimed at improving the quality of life of elderly Nigerians.

Madam Agnes Akhamentalor from Edo Central, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, said they were surprised when they were called to be part of the beneficiaries.

She urged Senator Tinubu to continue to remember the poor and needy.

Speaking at the event, Senator Tinubu said the scheme was a demonstration of a compassionate government that valued the dignity, comfort and well-being of its elderly population.

Represented by the Coordinator, Office of the Governor’s Wife, Edo State, Mrs Edesili, she said the celebration of senior citizens every December was in recognition of their immense contributions to nation-building.

“As we approach the festive season, it is important that we prioritise our elderly citizens. They have walked difficult paths so that younger generations may enjoy smoother roads. It is our moral duty and joy to ensure they live their later years in comfort, good health and dignity,” she said.

She urged senior citizens to remain hopeful, active and engaged; stressing that ageing gracefully was beyond longevity.

Special Adviser on Health to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Dr. Andrew Iyamu, said empowering vulnerable groups was a service to God and humanity.

Tinubu to governors: obey verdict on Council autonomy

    • State police will strengthen our security, says President
    • Yilwatda to roll out e-registration

It is time to fully comply with the Supreme Court judgment on financial autonomy for local governments, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu admonished governors last night.

He urged them to brace for the implementation of state police as a panacea to insecurity.

The President spoke during a National Caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governors of the APC, along with party leaders, attended the meeting at the Presidential Villa.

The caucus is usually a prelude to the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which will be held today.

The Supreme Court in July last year held that funds for the councils should be paid directly into their coffers rather than into the joint state/local government account, as is currently done.

That verdict has not been obeyed, prompting the President’s call.

He said there can be no genuine autonomy for the councils without direct access to funds.

Emphasising the importance of the apex court judgment, he said: “Let us look at the recent Supreme Court judgment, what we can do with it and how well we can position our country and our party.”

President Tinubu said the judgment on autonomy must be implemented in both letter and spirit, adding that councils cannot function effectively without financial independence.

He stressed: “To me, the local government autonomy, as it is, must be effective. There is no autonomy without a funded mandate.

“We’ll give them their money directly. That’s the truth. That’ll comply with the Supreme Court order.”

President Tinubu urged the governors to take leadership seriously by ensuring that governance and party coordination extend down to the grassroots.

He said: “You are in a leadership position and must yield and continue to promote, tolerate, and be flexible. Get involved in whatever is happening in your various states, up to the local government level.”

The President also enjoined the governors to support the proposed establishment of state police, describing it as a critical pillar of his administration’s security reform agenda.

He explained that he had assured international partners of Nigeria’s resolve to make state policing work.

He expressed confidence in the ruling party’s capacity to deliver the reform.

President Tinubu said: “I had a very long discussion with the U.S. and Europeans. I was bragging to them that, definitely, we will use the state police to improve security.”

He said when his interlocutors questioned his confidence, he pointed to the APC’s dominance across the country.

The President added: “They asked me if I’m confident, and I said yes. I have a party to depend on. I have a party that will make it happen, and God forbid, we will not fail.”

The President emphasised that reconciliation, accommodation, and cooperation within the party were essential to translating numerical strength into effective governance.

Akpabio commended President Tinubu for what he described as his decisive leadership on national security, particularly the recent rescue of over 100 abducted children, pledging the Senate’s full backing for tougher measures against kidnapping and banditry.

He praised the security agencies for their efforts and expressed sympathy with the families of victims and fallen security personnel.

Akpabio, who offered prayers for the release of the remaining captives, assured affected families of continued support, stressing that their sacrifices would not be forgotten.

The Senate President applauded President Tinubu’s diplomatic intervention in the Benin Republic to safeguard democracy.

He said the Senate had already commended the President’s regional engagement during plenary, noting that Nigeria’s security cannot be guaranteed if its neighbours remain unstable.

Akpabio explained that the Senate had passed a bill classifying kidnapping as terrorism, a move that would attract the death penalty upon presidential assent.

He urged governors to enforce capital punishment where applicable, warning that failure to do so could embolden criminals to endanger society further.

Akpabio welcomed governors who defected to the APC and urged party unity and accommodation across states.

He said the ruling party would deliver bloc votes for President Tinubu in the 2027 elections, expressing confidence that cohesion within the APC would translate into electoral victory nationwide.

APC Chairman Prof Nentawe Yilwatda said the party had recorded a surge in political strength following the high-profile defections and dominance in the National Assembly, declaring that APC now enjoys a “commanding majority” nationwide.

He said the influx of new members from opposition parties reflects the APC’s expanding national appeal.

He cited the defection of Governors Douye Diri (Bayelsa State), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Agbu Kefas (Taraba) and Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers) as evidence of the party’s widening influence across geo-political lines.

The chairman also noted that the party has consolidated its grip on the National Assembly, attributing the dominance to aggressive internal mobilisation led by the leadership of both chambers.

Yilwatda said the APC now holds clear majorities in the Senate and the House of Representatives, adding that they have strengthened the party’s legislative leverage and national profile.

On party organisation, he unfolded major reforms, including the rollout of an electronic membership registration system to improve transparency and internal democracy.

He said training had been conducted at zonal, state and local government levels, while new members have been assured full rights and privileges ahead of congresses and the national convention.

Yilwatda also highlighted other milestones such as the acquisition of land for a new APC national secretariat in Abuja, strong performances in recent by-elections, progress on constitutional amendments, and preparations for the 2026 FCT local government elections.

He reaffirmed the party’s full backing for President Tinubu’s reforms, expressing confidence that APC remains united and well-positioned for sustained electoral success nationwide.

President Tinubu, who arrived at the State House Conference Centre, venue of the meeting at about 7:38 pm, was accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, and Prof. Yilwatda.

The meeting was attended by former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, members of the National Working Committee (NWC), governors, and principal officers of the National Assembly.

Governors at the meeting included  Monday Okpebholo (Edo),  Inuwa Yahaya (Gombe), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Usman Ododo (Kogi),  Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti),  Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), Ahmed Aliyu (Sokoto), Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Rev. Dr Ali, who was first appointed as a commissioner in February 2022, takes over as Vice Chairman from December 1, 2025, and will serve in that capacity until the completion of his first term.

    •‘NLC’s protest selfish, unpatriotic’

The Convener of the Arewa Think Tank (ATT), Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, has condemned the nationwide protest organised by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) over insecurity.

ATT described the industrial action as “selfish and unpatriotic”.

In a statement, Yakubu reminded Nigerians that the NLC stayed silent in 2017 when bandits slaughtered civilians across the North, “but it is now that the military gains ground against terrorism that the union has called for a shutdown”.

He added: “The NLC did not call for protests when bandits were killing people in the North in 2017. Now that the military is winning the war against terrorism, they go on strike. This is not fair in the eyes of right thinking Nigerians.”

Citing the 2017 Sokoto massacre that left 76 dead in a single day, Yakubu recalled that “the North was not secure; it was the worst place to be in this country at that time. Yet, the NLC did not protest. Why now?”

The ATT convener said the NLC pledged a peaceful, orderly demonstration, urging civil society groups and the masses to join in “reclaiming national dignity and sanity from the grip of fear and violence”.

He said the union premised its nationwide protest on a surge in kidnappings, banditry and terrorist attacks.

NLC’s Acting General Secretary Benson Upah called the action a “watershed moment” for Nigerians whose lives have been shattered by violence, warning: “Enough of the excuses and rhetoric, we want action.”

But the ATT expressed its support for President   Tinubu’s intensified fight against insecurity.

“President Tinubu has taken decisive steps to confront the criminal elements that threaten our communities,” Yakubu said. “His administration’s recent surge in military operations, coupled with community engagement programmes, has already yielded tangible improvements in safety for countless citizens.”

The ATT applauded the President’s decision to deploy additional troops to the restive Northwest, the launch of a coordinated intelligence sharing platform, and the allocation of emergency funds for displaced families.

“These measures demonstrate a clear commitment to addressing the root causes of conflict, poverty, unemployment and lack of access to basic services,” Yakubu added.

The ATT urged patriotic Nigerians to rally behind the President’s security strategy, urging the NLC and other labour groups to channel their concerns into constructive dialogue rather than disruptive strikes.

“The nation cannot afford to be divided while the enemy exploits our differences,” ATT warned.
