JUST IN: Supreme Court strikes out PDP states’ suit against emergency rule in Rivers

The Supreme Court has struck out the suit filed by Adamawa and 10 other Peoples Democratic Party-led states challenging the propriety of the state of emergency declared by President Bola Tinubu in Rivers State, during which elected state’s officials were suspended for six months.

In a split decision of six-to-one on Monday, the Supreme held that the plaintiffs (the 11 PDP states) failed to establish any cause of action capable of activating the original jurisdiction of the apex court.

Justice Mohammed Idris held, in the lead majority judgment, that the plaintiffs failed to show that there existed any actionable dispute between them and the federation to require the court to exercise its original jurisdiction.

Justice Idris proceeded to strike out the suit for want of jurisdiction.

Tinubu hails commencement of commercial flights at Ekiti airport

Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on National Assembly Matters, Ibrahim Olarewaju, has hailed Ekiti Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, on the commencement of commercial flight operations at the Ekiti State Agro-Allied International Airport.

Olarewaju described the development as a major milestone and a clear testament to visionary leadership, policy consistency and continuity in governance.

In a statement on Sunday, the Ex-House of Representatives member said the inauguration of commercial flights at the airport represents a defining moment in Ekiti State’s developmental journey.

He noted that the facility has continued to attract commendations from aviation experts and prominent business leaders who have already made use of the airport.

According to him, stakeholders who have visited the airport have affirmed that it meets world-class standards, citing its robust design, modern infrastructure and high level of operational excellence.

Olarewaju stressed that the airport is strategically positioned to significantly transform Ekiti’s economic landscape by opening the state to fresh opportunities in commerce, investment, tourism and the hospitality sector.

He further underscored the strategic importance of the airport’s location, pointing to its proximity to key academic and research institutions such as Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State University (EKSU), as well as the emerging Ekiti Knowledge Zone in Ado-Ekiti.

Olarewaju also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support for Ekiti State’s development agenda, particularly his support for Governor Oyebanji’s administration and the successful completion of the airport project.

He lauded previous administrations for laying the groundwork for the project, with appreciation to former Governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi for the bold and decisive steps taken during his tenure to advance the airport initiative.

He also lauded the contributions of legal luminary and educationist, Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, for his significant role in ensuring the realisation of the project.

Olarewaju urged the people of Ekiti State to continue to support Governor Oyebanji beyond 2026 and up to 2030, noting that sustained support would guarantee stability and enable the administration to consolidate its achievements while delivering more transformative projects across the State.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to take decisive and collective action against unconstitutional changes of government, warning that the evolving security threats confronting the sub-region demand unity, coordination and a shared sense of responsibility.

Speaking at the 68th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, held at the State House in Abuja, President Tinubu said West Africa’s increasingly porous borders make joint action unavoidable, stressing that no single country, regardless of size or capacity, can achieve lasting stability in isolation.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Nigerian leader said the region’s security, prosperity and resilience are collective obligations that require consultation, unity of purpose and coordinated action among member states.

“The external threats confronting West Africa today demand nothing less than a united front. Terrorism, violent extremism, unconstitutional changes of government, transnational organised crime, cyber insecurity, climate shocks, food insecurity and irregular migration do not respect borders.

“No single member state, regardless of size, can achieve enduring stability alone. Our security, prosperity and resilience are collective responsibilities. We must sit at the same table, speak with one voice and act with shared resolve”, Tinubu said.

Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the ideals of the ECOWAS community, insisting that fraternity rather than force must define the future of the regional bloc.

“This is the abiding conviction of President Bola Tinubu, whose actions have consistently shown that our unity is not transactional but foundational. Nigeria remains steadfast in its fidelity to the ideals of ECOWAS and unwavering in its commitment to collective action in defence of our common future”, he said.

Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority and President of Sierra Leone, Julius Maada Bio, described the summit as a historic crossroads, warning that West Africa is facing some of the gravest security, democratic and economic challenges in its post-independence history.

“This session is a defining moment for the future of over 400 million West Africans. No border can insulate us from violence or fragmentation. Instability in one member state threatens the entire region”, Bio said, noting that the meeting coincides with the Golden Jubilee of ECOWAS.

Bio said terrorism, violent extremism, organised crime and communal conflicts, particularly in the Sahel, continue to undermine development, adding that the regional response must be united, uncompromising and holistic, combining security efforts with good governance, education, job creation and community resilience.

He disclosed that member states are advancing plans to operationalise the ECOWAS Standby Force, including the establishment of a 1,650-person counter-terrorism brigade by the end of 2026, supported by sustainable funding arrangements.

Condemning recent unconstitutional changes of government in the region, Bio cited developments in Guinea-Bissau and the attempted coup in Benin, stressing that ECOWAS would not compromise on democratic governance.

He commended the swift mobilisation of troops and air assets, led by Nigeria, as a demonstration of the bloc’s resolve, while reaffirming solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau and support for President Patrice Talon and the people of Benin.

On the economic front, Bio highlighted rising living costs, trade disruptions and shrinking opportunities across the region, describing regional integration as non-negotiable.

“Economic integration is the bedrock of the ECOWAS vision and the foundation of our collective prosperity,” he said, reaffirming commitments to remove trade barriers, harmonise policies, deepen the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme and advance monetary convergence in line with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

He said the ECOWAS Convergence Council has strengthened fiscal and monetary coordination, with a single regional currency by 2027 identified as a strategic priority.

“When achieved, a common currency will be transformative, reducing transaction costs, expanding trade and strengthening competitiveness across West Africa,” Bio said.

In a move aimed at easing mobility and stimulating trade and tourism, Bio announced that from January 1, 2026, ECOWAS will abolish air transport taxes and cut passenger and security charges by 25 per cent.

“This is leadership that is practical, people-centred and responsive to everyday realities,” he said.

The summit also marked a renewed push for private-sector-led integration, with President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, announcing the launch of the ECOWAS Business Council and naming Nigerian industrialist Alhaji Aliko Dangote as its pioneer chairman.

“Alhaji Aliko Dangote has graciously accepted to serve as the pioneer chairperson of the ECOWAS Business Council,” Touray said, noting that the council would drive investment and deepen economic integration across the region.

He described the body as a structured platform for dialogue between governments and private-sector actors, adding that ECOWAS is planning a West African Economic Investment Summit, envisioned as a Davos-style forum to coordinate investment and track regional progress.

Leaders present at the summit included Presidents Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, José Maria Neves of Cabo Verde, Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal, Faure Gnassingbé of Togo, Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire, Adama Barrow of The Gambia and John Mahama of Ghana, alongside representatives of Guinea-Bissau, Benin and Liberia.

  • Tinubu is God-given president at this critical time – Majekodunmi

Tinubu is God-given president at this critical time – Majekodunmi

Chief (Dr) Femi Majekodunmi is a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State.

In this interview with Bola Joseph, the Bada of Egbaland bares his mind on the state of the nation, especially the current security challenges, like banditry, kidnappings and terrorisms across the country and how President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been tackling the menaces headlong, the developments which have achieved the desired results.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has been accused of muzzling the oppositions to achieve its one-party state agenda. How would you react to that?

APC with a one-party state agenda? That cannot be true. It is true that the APC is the only strong and functional political party today in this country. When you look at the political situation in the country now, and considering all the other parties around, the APC is really doing well. Which other party is doing well now? Almost none. Consider the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is nowhere to be found today. Consider the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that has just started. Maybe they are preparing for the 2031 general elections. I can’t see ADC doing anything. What else do you want to mention? Accord or, what do they call themselves? In fact, I can’t recall the rest having come to focus in any way. They are not doing enough to be considered as viable parties for the forthcoming 2027 general elections. So, it’s not true that the APC is muzzling the opposition to achieve a one-party system. If it’s a reality and it’s happening, it is because others are not functional, then it’s not the APC doing so. It’s all the other parties that are dying.

What in your opinion that’s fuelling the current wind of defections to the APC?

Our incumbent President (Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu) is a strong factor. He is a very intelligent person. He’s a sound, and a knowledgeable politician with tremendous experience over the years. He had done it in Lagos State. From the time he became the governor of Lagos State in the first term, you could see that he was all over the place. And he was able to administer Lagos to the best of his ability. All could see the results that emerged. No wonder he has taken up the whole country in the same pattern. The way he is working, performing, since he became President is unprecedented. He has put so much seriousness into governance. And people might feel that virtually everything has been done by him. No o! It’s just that many people appreciate him for his contributions in solving many problems he met on the ground. I believe if he’s given time he would solve many of Nigeria’s problems. He can take it one-by-one. See the way and manner he solved the Rivers State crisis. See the way and manner he solved the problems at the Lagos State House of Assembly, and so many other problems. See the problems he’s solving Donald Trumps’ fearful threats. I am saying it; give him time he would do better.

Can the APC genuinely and honestly exonerate itself from the crises in the opposition, especially PDP?

Well, like I said, the APC is very strong and everybody can see it. Tinubu is even stronger. I see Tinubu as a God-given President at this time of our history. The problems are many. And the way and manner he is solving these problems, definitely, has generated comments, both supportive and antagonistic. But, then, he is just a smooth, silent operator.

He doesn’t make noise and I can’t see him muzzling these problems . He has been solving them accordingly. Now, the current one is the security problems. They are being solved today. The way and manner he has been solving them, because he believes there are collusions and many, many problems even within the ranks and file of our security operatives. He’s tackling them in a no nonsense way. And if this continues many of these problems would be solved. We are talking about the Sambisa Forest and it’s still there. Why is it difficult for Nigeria, the military, especially the army and the Air Force to tackle them? Why are they finding it difficult to dismantle whatever is in Sambisa Forest? The Chibok Girls were taken there. Many of these people were taken there, and we don’t hear, up until today, of their movement, how they got there, what they are doing there, getting there and bringing them back to their homes. That means there is serious collusion. All these things are going on. With the way Tinubu is tackling them, it is a matter of time, things will be better.

Do you see the ADC as a threat to the APC, because we have seen powerful figures, like Atiku, El-Rufai, Aregbesola, etc who have defected to the former?

It would take time to know what is happening in the ADC, with Atiku and all big politicians joining them. The way I see it, like I said earlier, the best they can do is to start preparing for 2031 elections. Because I can’t see them achieving anything in the forthcoming 2027 general elections, because they have problems already, with those that have been managing it. They have had problems with those who have been in the ADC for a long time. And ADC has never been a strong party, nationally, anyway. So, what are they going to do now? They have to solve the problems, to start with, and the party’s preparedness for the general elections which is less than two years away. So, all we hear is talk, talk, talk. I don’t know how they would organise that party to be ready for any election, when we talk of competing with a party like the APC. A party like the APC is definitely a winner as far as this forthcoming 2027 general elections, with what we can see on ground.

How have Nigerians fared under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu?

Well, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu came in at a time when we had problems. And the problems are still there. But the way and manner he is tackling them, I have a strong conviction that he would solve these problems.

People talk of Tinubu not being prepared for governance, what preparation do you require from a person who knows what to do at any given time?

He fits into what they call ‘small body with big engine’. He has that big engine, God-given one that he’s using now to do many things in this country. And what surprises everybody is that he has been doing them, solving many problems, noiselessly and yielding results from time-to-time.

When you consider the economy, money to some extent is being made available, and with time, the economy will keep on improving because the indices are there.

Another important aspect of it is the suffering of the people and that’s still on at the grassroots level. When the problems are solved, things will improve too. We can see prices of commodities are going down. So, what do you expect?

We can only pray for Tinubu. In uniting Nigerians, he has been very, very careful, not to set us against ourselves. We have many dichotomies, religion. He is carefully making sure we don’t have a religious crisis.

Like I said, it is a matter of time, Tinubu will excel. We should all continue to pray for him. He means well. He’s doing well. He’s doing it to the best of his ability. He is someone who doesn’t want to offend anybody. He wants the job to get done and he wants a good life for every citizenry. It takes time. Nigerians should be patient with him. I can’t imagine what would happen within the next one year because many of what we haven’t seen would be apparent. We will see Tinubu excelling.

Has Tinubu done enough in governance to deserve a second term?

He has done more than enough. There’s no strong opposition for Tinubu today, because he’s working hard to solve many of the problems, even if not all the problems. What else do we have to do the work, either now, or even later? That’s what he is doing now, because we don’t have an alternative to Tinubu right now. And that’s why we should pray for him. The others are just more rabble-rousers. We should pray for him. He hasn’t finished the work, but the best we have now is considering the nation and the circumstances, generally.

Is Nigeria winning the insurgency and terrorist war?

We are very much in it, now. We can see that Nigeria is winning. And that’s one of the reasons Tinubu has changed the Service Chiefs. And that’s why I said earlier that he means well. He’s leaving no stone unturned to make sure he deals accordingly with the security challenges. And he’s going to win. He’s likely to turn many of the criticisms, including Donald Trumps and others, to a force that would assist him to solve many of the problems.

Whatever the opposition,  by way of criticising him, that’s prevailing right now, should be used as a kind of caution. It should be used as a weapon to solve many of these problems. He’s not going to fight anybody, for what? In any situation that, people are talking to you; criticising you, there would be one, two or three points that would help in solving these problems. And when a good leader does accordingly, using some of these things, he’s bound to succeed with time, and the opposition with their criticisms would come down. They will keep quiet. It’s one of the strategies he’s using, instead of fighting those who are criticising him, he’s managing them in one way or the other. He’s a strategist on his own.

  • Tinubu moves to transform NIPSS into global centre of excellence by 2030

Tinubu moves to transform NIPSS into global centre of excellence by 2030

Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the commitment of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remodel the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) into a digitally driven, financially stable and globally recognised centre of excellence by the year 2030.

Shettima, who represented President Tinubu at the graduation ceremony of the Senior Executive Course (SEC) 47 of NIPSS in Kuru, Plateau State, on Saturday, said the transformation of the institute is central to the administration’s broader agenda of strengthening evidence-based policymaking and leadership development in Nigeria.

According to him, the Tinubu administration regards NIPSS as the nation’s most strategic platform for developing thinkers, reformers and innovators, as well as a meeting point for ideas that shape policy, guide reforms and influence the course of national development.

According to a statement issued by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima said, “His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been unequivocal in his commitment to supporting NIPSS in its transformation agenda, particularly its ambition to become a digitally driven, financially stable, and globally recognised centre of excellence by 2030”.

He stressed that the Federal Government’s support for the institute would go beyond funding, infrastructure and a conducive research environment, adding that emphasis would be placed on producing implementation-ready policy papers.

“Our support must therefore go beyond funding, infrastructure, and a conducive research environment. It must ensure that NIPSS produces implementation-ready policy papers and that its outputs are fully integrated into national decision-making and execution frameworks,” Shettima stated.

The Vice President commended the theme of the SEC 47, “Blue Economy and Sustainable Development in Nigeria,” describing it as timely and reflective of the interconnection between development, security, environmental stewardship and social inclusion.

He noted that the strength of academic work lies not only in intellectual depth but also in its relevance to Nigeria’s realities, adding that the graduands’ research on the maritime domain underscored the links between security, livelihoods, food security, environmental protection and national cohesion.

Shettima assured that the Tinubu administration takes evidence-based policymaking seriously, disclosing that he had directed relevant ministries, departments and agencies to give the report and recommendations of the course participants close attention for both immediate application and long-term strategic planning.

He also praised the Director-General of NIPSS, Prof. Ayo Omotayo, as well as the management and staff of the institute, for their dedication and professionalism in sustaining NIPSS as the nation’s foremost centre for strategic thought and leadership development.

He further commended Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, and the people of the state for maintaining a peaceful environment that has enabled the institute to function as a national asset.

Earlier, Governor Mutfwang applauded the Federal Government for its support to NIPSS, noting that Nigeria stands to benefit immensely from the institute’s research outputs, particularly in broadening governance perspectives and addressing security challenges across the country.

Chairman of the NIPSS Board, Senator Ken Nnamani, urged authorities at the national and subnational levels to adopt and implement research outputs from institutions such as NIPSS, expressing confidence in the Tinubu administration’s continued support for research-driven policymaking.

In his welcome address, Prof. Omotayo said the Vice President’s presence at the ceremony underscored the Federal Government’s recognition of NIPSS as Nigeria’s premier policy and strategic research institute, highlighting achievements recorded under its five-year strategic plan.

Goodwill messages were also delivered by the President of the NIPSS Alumni Association, Ambassador Emmanuel Okafor, and the Monitor-General of SEC 47, Col. Mukhtar Sani Daroda, who pledged the graduands’ continued commitment to national service.

Highlights of the event included the presentation of certificates to the graduands by the Vice President, their induction into the Alumni Association of the National Institute, and the inauguration of four units of two-bedroom apartments donated to NIPSS by the SEC 47 participants.

Meanwhile, the Vice President also interacted with strawberry farmers in Plateau State, reiterating the Federal Government’s resolve to transform Nigeria’s agricultural value chain in line with President Tinubu’s development agenda.

  • Wike at 58: No regret supporting President Tinubu

Wike at 58: No regret supporting President Tinubu

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Saturday said he has no regrets for openly supporting President Bola Tinubu since 2022.

Wike maintained that his position has remained consistent before, during and after the 2023 presidential election.

The Minister, who spoke at a special event organised to mark his 58th birthday anniversary, said his political decisions are guided by the principles of character and integrity, adding that he never concealed his support for Tinubu from the outset.

He recalled that during the build-up to the 2023 presidential election, he was the only leading figure from the main opposition party, who openly declared support for President Tinubu, a decision he said was based on equity, fairness and justice, as well as his conviction that power should shift to the South.

According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant (SSA), Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, the minister further argued that his leadership capacity was demonstrated in Rivers State during the elections, where the All Progressives Congress (APC) won the presidential poll while the PDP secured victories in the National Assembly, governorship, State House of Assembly and local government elections under his watch.

At the birthday event held in the wee hours of today, in Wike’s residence in Abuja, leaders from different political divides gathered to celebrate the achievements and political impact of the former Rivers State Governor and current FCT Minister.

In attendance were National Assembly lawmakers from Rivers State, serving and former members, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly led by the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, chairmen of local government areas, as well as close friends and political associates.

Speakers took turns to extol the virtues of the Minister, describing him as an achiever and astute politician whose impacts are visible across the country, urging him not to relent and assuring him of their continued support.

Rivers State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors and former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chairman, Ambassador Desmond Akawor, described the FCT Minister as the “naked wire” of Rivers politics.

Akawor, who is the ex-Director-General of Nyesom Wike’s 2015 governorship campaign, said Wike’s feat had shown that President Bola Tinubu picked the right product from the PDP to work with.

Also, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, who led 27 members of the House of Assembly to Wike’s residence, thanked the Minister for being a leader with a strong shoulder for everyone to lean on.

He promised the continued loyalty and support of the Assembly members to him, saying; “Wherever our leader (Wike) goes, we will follow him, whoever he is supporting, we will also support.”

Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government and River State Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), Hon. Allwell Ihunda, who spoke on behalf of Local Government Chairmen, extolled Wike’s virtues, describing as a consistent and compassionate leader.

Others who spoke were Chairman of the PDP National Caretaker Committee, Mohammed Abdulrahman, PDP Board of Trustees Chairman, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, PDP National Vice Chairman (South South), Chief Dan Orbih, his All Progressives Congress counterpart, Hon Victor Giadom,

former Governor of Abia State, Dr Okieze Ikpiazu, Senator (Prof) Sandy Onor, Senator Magnus Abe, Senator George Sekibo, Senator Bari Mpigi, and others.

In his response, the Minister thanked his political family and associates for standing solidly behind him, acknowledging the role they have played in shaping his leadership journey.

He said he remained fulfilled working with his people and pledged to continue collaborating closely with them in the interest of the people of Rivers State and Nigeria at large.

Wike, who described criticism and abuses as one of the things that keep him going, added that he has never been bothered by those who abuse and criticise him.

The event ended with special prayers for the Minister and his family.

Tinubu mourns ex-diplomat, Sokoya, hails lifetime of service, nation-building

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to Ambassador James Duro Olufemi Sokoya, a veteran career diplomat and former Nigerian envoy, who passed away at the age of 94, describing him as a distinguished statesman whose life and service embodied the finest ideals of diplomacy and patriotism.

In a tribute he issued on Saturday, the President said while the nation mourns the passing of Ambassador Sokoya, Nigerians must also celebrate his remarkable life, enduring legacy and invaluable contributions to nation-building and Nigeria’s global standing.

Ambassador Sokoya, who was born in Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State, was described by the President as an extraordinary public servant who served the country with uncommon dedication, dignity and an unwavering belief in the power of dialogue to bridge divides and foster peace.

President Tinubu noted that Sokoya’s public service career began in the Old Western Region before Nigeria’s independence in 1960, where he worked as a teacher in primary and secondary schools as well as teacher-training colleges in Abeokuta, Ibadan and Ijebu-Ode.

During this period, he gained admission to the University of Ibadan to study Geography.

After graduating in 1960, Sokoya served in various ministries of the Western Nigeria government, including the Premier’s Office, where he distinguished himself through hard work, brilliance and patriotism, before transferring his service to the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1962.

Throughout his diplomatic career, President Tinubu said, Ambassador Sokoya carried himself with calm wisdom, integrity and a deep commitment to service, noting that he understood diplomacy as more than negotiation but as a platform for building trust, nurturing peace and fostering enduring partnerships.

The President recalled that the late diplomat served in several strategic capacities, including as Head of the Asia Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Chief of Protocol under former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon; at Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York; and as Head of the Nigerian Embassy in Bamako, Mali, in the capacity of Charge d’Affaires, as well as in Algiers, Algeria.

President Tinubu further highlighted Ambassador Sokoya’s instrumental role in Nigeria’s entry into the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and in the establishment of the Nigerian Embassy in Vienna, Austria. He also served as Deputy High Commissioner in London and later as Nigeria’s first Resident High Commissioner to Jamaica, with concurrent accreditation as Ambassador to Cuba, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, and as High Commissioner to the Bahamas.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, the President described the late diplomat as a man of profound character, humble, principled and compassionate, who inspired younger diplomats through mentorship and positively impacted his community through kindness and service.

On behalf of the nation, President Tinubu expressed profound gratitude to Ambassador Sokoya for his devoted years of service, saying his legacy would remain a guiding light for generations of public servants.

The President extended his deepest condolences to the family, friends and associates of the late diplomat, praying that they find comfort in the knowledge that he left an indelible mark on Nigeria and all who knew him.
