Tinubu’s reforms will end insecurity soon – Rep member

Member representing Enugu North/Enugu South Federal Constituency, Hon. Chimaobi Atu, has expressed strong confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s security reforms will soon bring an end to Nigeria’s prolonged insecurity crisis.

Atu stated this in Enugu on Saturday during the 2025 Yoruba Cultural Day celebration, where he was honoured with an award of recognition by the Yoruba Community in the state.

The lawmaker said the House of Representatives was optimistic that Nigeria’s security situation was nearing a turning point, owing to President Tinubu’s decisive reforms.

“We in the House of Representatives believe that very soon, the security challenges facing Nigeria will be a thing of the past. Tinubu is already doing great.

“We believe that very soon, the security challenges in Nigeria will be a thing of the past. Tinubu is already doing great,” he declared.

The lawmaker specifically praised the President for appointing former Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, as minister responsible for key security responsibilities, noting that the move reflected the President’s determination to restore peace.

“His appointment of General Musa and the clear plans outlined to end the insecurity crisis show that the President is putting the right people in the right positions. I want to commend him for his will in appointing the right man for that office,” Atu said.

He added that with ongoing reforms, coordinated security strategies, and stronger inter-agency collaboration, Nigerians should expect a significant decline in nationwide security breaches.

Speaking earlier after receiving the award, the lawmaker said he was deeply moved by the recognition and praised the Yoruba Community for its contributions to cultural harmony, unity, and national development.

“I am happy and truly overwhelmed by this award from the Yoruba Community in Enugu,” he said. “The Yoruba have contributed immensely to the culture and unity of Nigeria, just like their Igbo counterparts. Their leadership and values continue to enrich our country.”

Atu commended the community’s investments in youth empowerment, particularly the scholarship scheme, describing them as seeds being planted for future national leaders.

“Like the Yoruba community, we are also offering scholarships. What you have sown here is a seed for future leaders of our great nation,” he added.

JUST IN: Senate approves Tinubu’s request to deploy troops to Benin for peace mission

The Senate on Tuesday approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin on a peace mission aimed at restoring democratic order and stability.

The resolution followed the Senate’s consideration of the President’s request in the Committee of the Whole during plenary.

Tinubu had, in a letter read on the floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday, urged the Senate to approve the troop deployment to help restore governance following a recent coup attempt in Benin.

The President had initially deployed members of the Nigerian Armed Forces on Sunday to assist in restoring democracy after a group of soldiers attempted a coup.

In the letter titled, “Deployment of Nigerian troops to the Republic of Benin for a peace mission”, Tinubu cited Section 5(5), Part 2 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and stated that, following consultation with the National Defence Council, he sought the Senate’s consent for the deployment.

“This request is made further to a request received from the Government of Benin Republic for the exceptional and immediate provision of air support by the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The Distinguished Senate may wish to note that the Government of the Republic of Benin is currently faced with an attempted unconstitutional seizure of power and disruption and destabilization of democratic institutions.

“The situation as reported by the Government of Benin requires urgent external intervention.

“The Distinguished Senate considers the close ties of brotherhood and friendship which exist between Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, as well as the principles of collective security upheld within ECOWAS.

“It is our duty to provide the support as requested by the Government of the Republic of Benin.”

After reading the letter, Akpabio committed the President’s request for consent to the Committee of the Whole for immediate action.

HJRBDA boss hails Tinubu over students’ rescue operation

Managing Director of Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority (HJRBDA), Alhaji Rabiu Suleiman Bichi, on Tuesday commended President Bola Tinubu for his decisive and personal intervention in the successful rescue operations of the abducted students from Kebbi and Niger States.

In a statement issued from his office in Kano, Alhaji Bichi expressed profound appreciation for the president’s demonstration of “exceptional leadership and deep-seated concern” for the security and welfare of Nigerian citizens.

“We must acknowledge and sincerely appreciate President Bola Tinubu for his great concern and bold moves taken in rescuing our precious children.

“History shows that while past administrations often limited their response to strong condemnations, President Tinubu went a decisive step further by personally aborting an important international trip to Johannesburg to commandeer the rescue mission.

“This hands-on approach underscores a new proactive standard in leadership at the highest level,” Alhaji Bichi stated.

The HJRBDA boss observed what he described as a concerning trend in public discourse, where tragedies are met with swift condemnation of the government and blame placed on the president, often with accusations of inaction.

“It has become a pattern that when such heartbreaking tragedies strike, the focus is predominantly to blame the government and the president for allowing it to happen or for perceived delays in response.

“However, there is a palpable reluctance to extend credit to where it is due when the same president and our security forces especially the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, demonstrated courage, dedication, and ultimately averted greater catastrophe, rescuing the victims,” he noted.

Alhaji Bichi emphasised that while holding leadership accountable is a vital aspect of democracy, fairness demands that exemplary acts of courage and successful operations should also attract national acknowledgment and support.

This, he argued, strengthens national morale, motivates security agencies and in this regard, will encourage the leaders to ensure successful rescue of all the kidnap victims.

According to Bichi, the successful rescue of the affected students is a victory for the nation, made possible by the president’s direct involvement and the tireless efforts of our security personnel.

He noted, “Let us be a people who are balanced in our engagement—constructive in criticism, but also generous in praise where praise is earned. This is essential for building a united front against the challenges we face.”

Bichi reiterated the commitment of the Hadejia Jama’are River Basin Development Authority under his leadership in supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda of the federal government, particularly in fostering sustainable development and security in communities.

NGF chair commends Tinubu, says rollback of Benin coup In Nigeria’s best security interest

President Bola Tinubu’s deployment of Nigeria’s military assets to swiftly contain and reverse the coup attempt in Benin Republic was an exercise in the best interest of Nigeria, according to the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF).

In a statement on Monday, NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq says a successful coup in Benin would have far-reaching consequences on Nigeria, as the militants and hostile non-state actors in the Sahel Region would take advantage to further destabilise Benin Republic.

“Apart from admirably acting in support of democracy in the subregion, the President acted in the best interest of our country and West Africa with the intervention. With the Sahel in disarray and dire security conditions, and a significant portion of Benin, especially the W-forest, already infested by the militants, a successful coup would have had devastating effects on our own country due to our proximity to Benin Republic which shares border with many of our states,” it says.

The Forum commended the President and the Nigerian Armed Forces for the timely interventions that have helped to restore stability and constitutional order to Benin.

“It is our position that democracy, whatever its challenges, remains the best form of government for regional peace, stability, and development,” the Forum says.

“Subsuing the coup on the invitation of Benin Republic is a big plus for the collective security efforts by ECOWAS in the region and for Nigeria in particular. For instance, security threats on Porto Novo, Cotonou, or Parakou constitute grave security risk to Nigeria, and the President’s firm action is an effective check to this.”

Tinubu in private talk with governors

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday held a closed-door meeting with some  governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other parties at the State House in Abuja.

The purpose of the meeting was not immediately clear, and details of the agenda were not divulged to reporters at press time last night.

The Nation learnt that the governors of Kebbi and Sokoto states arrived first and were later joined by four others from the South.

Those who attended the meeting included Governors Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Usman Ododo (Kogi), Aliyu Sokoto (Sokoto), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo),  and Dr. Nasir Idris (Kebbi) states.

The meeting, which lasted almost two hours, was held in the President’s office.

Although no official of the Presidency gave a hint about the meeting, it came amid recent mounting security challenges facing the nation.

It also coincided with ongoing national political consultations and preparations ahead of key party and governance engagements.

But the governors declined to speak on the meeting when reporters asked them what it was about.

President Tinubu also yesterday met separately with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru at the State House in Abuja.

The closed-door engagements came amid mounting political tension in Rivers State and renewed speculation over Governor Fubara’s future in the Peoples Democratic around 5:01 p.m. and was ushered into the President’s office by the Presidential Protocol Liaison Officer.

The Rivers governor departed around 5:45 p.m, but details of his discussions with the President were not disclosed as at press time.

Minutes earlier, Governor Nwifuru had been ushered in for a separate meeting with the President.

The purpose of his visit similarly remained undisclosed.

The meeting with Fubara comes on the heels of Friday’s defection of 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, loyal to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike and led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The shift in party alignment has altered the balance of power in the state’s legislature and heightened uncertainty around Fubara’s political standing.

Only three lawmakers, viewed as loyal to the governor, remain in the PDP, and they have not resumed sitting since emergency rule in the state was lifted on September 18.

Governor Nwifuru, a former Speaker of the Ebonyi House of Assembly and now an APC governor, has held several engagements with the Presidency, focusing largely on infrastructure development and security coordination in the Southeast.

President ends decades of river, helicopter transport travails

With his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated the temporary use of the 37.9-kilometre Bodo-Bonny Road in Rivers State.

The inauguration has ended many decades of travails caused by river transport and costly helicopter service for residents of the historic Bonny Kingdom and Ogoni communities.

The multi-billion naira project, awarded on December 11, 2014 and abandoned but later revived on October 20, 2017, by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, was inaugurated after it attained 90.98 per cent completion.

Speaking through Works Minister Dave Umahi during the colourful ceremony at Bodo and Bonny axis of the road, President Tinubu described the infrastructure as a flagship achievement of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said: “The dream of the Bonny Kingdom has come true; the dream of the Bodo Kingdom has come true. No more risky journeys through the busy Bonny River. No more expensive helicopters; no more untold hardships to reach this blessed island.

“For now, the road is open only for light vehicles from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Heavy-duty trucks, motorcycles and tricycles are barred until final completion, targeted for March 2026.”

The President applauded the efforts of Julius Berger, especially the Project Manager, who he said ensured that no obstacle stood in the way of the project.

“I have made a commendation to Julius Berger, especially Engineer Tim. I think if Engineer Tim was the Managing Director of Julius Berger, we wouldn’t have had all the fights we had in so many places,” Umahi said.

The minister urged the Rivers State government to provide 20 plots of land each at the Bodo and Bonny ends for the construction of trailer parks.

He warned that indiscriminate parking by trucks would not be acceptable, as it would accelerate the road’s deterioration.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, Barinada Mpigi, poured encomiums on President Tinubu for his clear love for the Ogoni people.

The senator pledged continued support for the administration.

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Benibo Anabraba, thanked President Tinubu for rescuing the project from abandonment and pleaded for more federal interventions.

He said: “This is the temporary opening of the Bonny-Bodo Road. But Mr. President, it is a permanent joy for the people of Bonny, Bodo, and Rivers State. Like Oliver Twist, we will ask for more.”

Julius Berger’s Project Manager, Mr. Tim Nippert, confirmed that 35 kilometres of the dual carriageway were fully motorable, assuring delivery of the remaining sections in the first quarter of 2026.

The Bodo-Bonny Road, with 11 bridges, is the first federal road linking the mainland directly to Bonny Island, home to Nigeria LNG and other multi-billion dollar oil and gas investments.

Tinubu hails Shehu Yar’Adua as symbol of national conscience, integrity

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the late Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, describing him as a symbol of national conscience, civic responsibility, and unwavering integrity whose ideals remain central to Nigeria’s democratic aspirations.

Speaking in Abuja on Monday at the launch of a new civic anthology, “Letters to the Union We Hope to Become,” the President said the late elder statesman represented a rare blend of patriotism and principled leadership that continues to inspire generations.

The ceremony held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre marked the 28th anniversary of Yar’Adua’s passing.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, President Tinubu said the gathering was “not merely a commemoration, but a renewal of the national values Yar’Adua fought for,” including justice, unity, accountability, and responsible governance, values he said form “the pillars of the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

Before an audience of political leaders, civil society actors, writers, and members of the Yar’Adua family, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the President noted that the late Tafida of Katsina was “not simply a soldier in uniform,” but a figure who embodied conviction, patriotism, and selflessness.

In a statement issued by Special Adviser to the SGF on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, the President said, “Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua demonstrated conviction, political awareness, patriotism, and selflessness. In service and in sacrifice, he embodied that rare spirit that places Nigeria before self and comfort.”

He recalled that Yar’Adua’s letters written from prison remain a moral compass for leaders, stressing that from solitude, he called for a nation governed by strong institutions rather than powerful individuals.

“These convictions shape our efforts today to strengthen democratic institutions, uphold transparency, and build trust between government and citizens,” he added.

Tinubu said the anthology being launched represents a fresh wave of civic engagement among the younger generation and aligns with his administration’s priorities in education, economic opportunity, security, youth empowerment, and public sector integrity.

According to him, ongoing investments in economic stabilisation, energy reforms, food security, digital innovation, and social protection are aimed at building “a union that is fairer, more secure, more prosperous, and governed by citizens’ trust.”

The President also highlighted Yar’Adua’s political legacy, citing his key role in the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), and the political structure leading to the historic but annulled 1993 presidential election.

He described the late general as a “phenomenal political strategist” whose national acceptance set him in strong contention for the presidency before the annulment.

Tinubu further noted Yar’Adua’s contribution to national unity through faith, including championing the construction of the National Mosque in Abuja, now regarded as a major symbol of national cohesion.

Urging Nigerians to treat the new anthology as a mirror for national reflection and a guide to the future envisioned under his administration, the President commended the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation for preserving the statesman’s legacy.

“Let us honour Shehu Musa Yar’Adua not only with remembrance, but with resolve. We must not only speak of hope; we must build the nation worthy of it. May the union we hope to become never lose its voice”, he said.
