Economy: Tinubu is on track, says APC Professionals Forum

Despite the challenges posed by the current economic hardships, the APC Professionals Forum, a think-tank stakeholders group within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), stated on Friday, March 1, that the administration led by President Bola Tinubu remains on course.

The forum urged Nigerians to see the current situation as short-term pains for long-term gains.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja on its assessment of the nine-month-old federal government APC-led administration, the chairman, Board of Trustees of the forum and former governor of Bauchi state, Isa Yuguda admitted that the Tinubu administration had little choice about the courageous economic reforms it introduced to tackle the lingering challenges.

Assessing the effects of the removal of fuel subsidies, the unification of all foreign exchange rate windows, intervention programmes in the agricultural sector to boost food production and the implementation of the Oronsaye report which seeks to rationalise government agencies and parastatal, the forum maintained that the country is on track.

Commending the bold step taken by the president to end the fuel subsidy regime and unify the foreign exchange rates, the group, however, admitted the consequences of the initiatives on the price of foodstuff and the general cost of living of the people.

According to Yuguda, “On the unification of the exchange rates, it’s important we highlight the commendable efforts by the Minister of Finance (and Coordinating Minister of the Economy) and the CBN Governor to arrest the freefall of Naira and plug the loopholes saboteurs used in undermining our currency and the economy.

“However, we must be wary of the Bretton Wood institutions who operates outside of Nigeria and may not appreciate the challenges of our economy. The solutions prescribed for American institutions may not work in our clime.

“We are also aware that the decision to discontinue fuel subsidy has since June 2023 led to a quantum increase in monthly allocations from the federation account to the sub-nationals with States and Local Governments getting almost 70% more than what they were receiving before the end of fuel subsidy.”

Lamenting that only a handful of states have introduced meaningful measures to cushion the effect of the removal of subsidies, the group advised state governments to channel a large portion of their increased federal allocations to food production and transportation and other intervention purposes to ameliorate the conditions of the people in their respective states.

The forum also urged all state governors to toe the path of the federal government in bringing succour to the people given the increase in monthly allocation occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidies.

On food security, the forum acknowledged efforts to boost food production through interventions such as the N200bn intervention to cultivate 250,000 hectares of land following the declaration of a state of emergency.

The group however want state governors in whose domains the lands are to invest more in agriculture even as they work with the federal government to enhance the capacity of farmers and forest rangers to protect farmlands.

On foreign policy and ECOWAS lifting of economic sanctions on Niger, Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso, the forum observed: “The president has done a great job in lobbying his brother’s Presidents to lift the sanctions. We also acknowledged that political and other targeted sanctions are still in force and look forward to Nigeria leading the charge to get the military leadership in those countries especially Niger to provide acceptable transition time table.”

The forum noted: “It is just nine months in the four-year tenure of the President and from our assessment at APC Professionals Forum, the Tinubu administration is on track.”

Support Tinubu’s administration, Southeast group urges Ndigbo

A non-political and non-governmental group, the Southeast Development Peace Initiative (SDPI), has urged Ndigbo to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The group said this is better than embarking on a nationwide protest.

SDPI said the call became necessary due to the prevailing socio-economic situation in the country and the attempts by those it called outsiders and other interests trying to incite the Igbo to join the protests over the worsening living condition in the land.

The group’s President, Vitus Okechi, explained why Ndigbo should support the Tinubu administration.

“The Igbo have suffered worse hunger, deprivations, and neglect since the end of the civil war in 1970.

“It is disheartening that the same people who folded their arms when the Igbo suffered such untold marginalisation are the ones attempting to persuade our people to join the protests against the current Federal Government.

“What have these people done to ease the pains suffered by our people since the war? What have they done to bring the Southeast at par with other regions in the number of component states? What have they done to address the dilapidated federal roads and other infrastructure in Igbo land? Does it matter to them that the five states in the Southeast account for only 95 local government areas whereas other regions have no less than 100 local government areas each?” he said.

Okechi, a former commissioner and outgoing local government chairman in Enugu State, admitted that the situation is dire in Nigeria.

But he said the Tinubu administration needs the support of all Nigerians to get the country out of the hard times, which did not start with the current government.

“Let’s be frank, times are hard now. But the best way to get out of the situation is to support the Tinubu administration in its drive to make things better in the long run. The government has rolled out some measures aimed at alleviating the suffering of Nigerians. The South East Development Peace Initiative calls on our people to back the government’s efforts to ameliorate the pains of today.

“As for Ndigbo, I appeal to them to be wary of those encouraging us to protest over what our people have suffered for many decades. Ohanaeze Ndigbo has also spoken and advised our youths not to put their lives at risk by joining such protests. We have, as a regionup, suffered a lot in the hands of successive governments.

“Like I said earlier, our people are wiser now. We want to take our destiny in our own hands. When our people were murdered in different parts of the country in the past, we bore our losses alone. When we faced marginalisation, as we still do, what did those people calling us out do to help the Southeast region? What have they done in the case of Nnamdi Kanu who has been in the custody of the government for years?

“It is in the interest of Ndigbo to support the government of President Tinubu because it has shown that we have a stake in it. The appointment of an Igbo man, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla as the Chief of Naval Staff and the appointments of other Igbo sons and daughters into strategic positions are pointers that this government has plans for Ndigbo.

“Following from this, our group, the South-East Development Peace Initiative (SDPI) supports President Bola Tinubu’s government and implores Ndigbo to back the administration’s renewed hope initiatives for the wellbeing of the entire country.”

    • President seeks understanding of reform programmes rather than partisan reactions

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday objected to incessant strikes and threats of industrial action by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

Noting the ruptured relations between government and Labour, he faulted the four industrial actions within nine months of the administration.

The President, who reflected on the pattern of acrimony, urged the NLC to pull the break, saying that it is not the only voice of the people.

President Tinubu spoke in Lagos where he inaugurated the first phase of the 37-kilometre Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line.

The landmark project of the Sanwo-Olu Administration is designed to ease intra-city transportation.

After reading his prepared speech, the President who said he wanted to throw a jab, chided the Joe Ajaero-led NLC for regressing into partisan politics.

Noting that political participation is a right, President Tinubu, however, asked the NLC leaders to wait till 2027 to participate in the electoral process.

On Tuesday, NLC organised a two-day nationwide protest to ventilate workers’ grievances over the rising cost of living.

It suspended the action after the first day.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC), led by Festus Usifo, acknowledged that the government had met a substantial part of the 16-point agreement signed between the government and Labour in October, and shunned the protest.

Attempts by the government through Minister of State (Labour and Employment) Nkeiruka Onyejeocha and Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume to prevent the protest, were rebuffed.

The warning by the Directorate of State Service (DSS) of the likely hijack of the protest was also ignored.

NLC held it in Abuja, Lagos and some state capitals. It was, however, peaceful.

Ajaero slammed the TUC for not joining it to protest, saying that the NLC is ready to act alone.

Many Nigerians, who believe that NLC should exercise patience and opt for dialogue with the government, have criticised the union leaders for harbouring political motives.

A statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, said President Tinubu advised the Labour leaders to refrain from disruptive actions.

He urged the union leaders to support the country in its drive for peace if the underlying reason for the strikes is not political.

President Tinubu reminded the NLC that the Labour movement is not the only voice of Nigerians.

He stressed: ‘’Some labour unions should understand that no matter how we cling to our freedom and rights, to call four strikes within the first nine months of a new administration is unacceptable.

‘’If you want to directly participate in the electoral process, wait until 2027.

“If not, maintain the peace. Labour is not the only voice of Nigeria.”

Ajaero does not hide his political leaning.

Speaking in March last year, the Labour leader said the NLC would continue to get involved in politics.

He was quoted as saying: “The NLC will be involved in politics; we are already involved in politics; NLC has a political party: the Labour Party (LP), and LP participated in the recent elections.

“Nigeria must exist before we practice our unionism; anybody, who emerges as the President of Nigeria will work with us, and the rights and privileges of the workers must be guaranteed.

“That is what we are going to impose on them – even the ones that have emerged as senators or House of Representatives members.

“They must, as a necessity, meet with us and we will give them our programmes.

“That is the whole essence and thinking of LP in the first place; so that their actions, inactions, and utterances will reflect the affairs of the labour movement, and there should be no pretences about it.

“We are not saying that people cannot belong to any party of their choice, but we have a party where whatever we discuss here, we take it there as workers.

“If we want new minimum wage, we take it to the people that represent; all these issues concern the workers, and we should no longer shy away from them.”

The programme’s theme is ‘Let God arise and peace reign in Nigeria’.

Tinubu to NLC: wait till 2027 if…

President Bola Tinubu has warned the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to maintain peace in the best interest of the country.

He spoke at the commissioning of the Lagos Red Line rail, on Thursday, February 29.

Tinubu came hard on the Union in the course of his remark, saying the Labour Union should understand that despite its acclaimed right and freedom, it cannot fight an administration that is just nine-month-old.

The Nation reports that NLC and other related unions protested on Tuesday over the high cost of living, inflation, insecurity, and hardship in the country.

But the union suspended the two-day nationwide protest after the first day, saying its suspension was based on the fact that the street action achieved overwhelming success.

The protesters headed to the National Assembly where the NLC President Joe Ajaero, presented a letter of demands to President Bola Tinubu through the leadership of the National Assembly.

Reacting on Thursday, Tinubu said: “Allow me to throw a jab here. The Labour Union should understand that you’re not the only one with freedom & rights.

“If you want to participate in the electoral process, meet us in 2027.

“If not, maintain peace. You’re not the only voice of Nigeria.”

The President further declared that: “There is a very bright light at the end of the tunnel. Nigeria will be out of the economic problem; we just need to persevere and work hard”.

Tinubu said the commissioning of the Red Line was the culmination of the vision he nursed 25 years ago when he was governor of the state, calling for more collaboration between the Ministry of Transport and other states to develop railway infrastructures across the country.

President Bola Tinubu has reassured Nigerians that his administration is committed to fighting corruption to ruins.

“The fight against corruption is on, we will not look back, we will fight it to ruins,” he said.

The president spoke when he inaugurated the Red Rail Line on Thursday, February 29.

According to him, ‘Today is to be remembered for good, an evidence that it is good to dream, a serious validation of democracy’.

He also assured Nigerians that the country will be out of economic problems, ‘we just need to work hard with perseverance’.

President Tinubu said: “The momentum of greatness that we started has become unstoppable. It is a constant reminder that positive change and progress are possible, and we must attain it. We must adhere to our pledge through perseverance and consistency.

“When you put people at the centre of your vision and planning, you will see the value. I look forward to the completion of other phases.”

The president also took a swipe at the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) for its incessant strikes.

According to him, it is unacceptable to call for a strike in just nine months of an administration.

Tinubu said: “Calling for the strike in just nine months of an administration is unacceptable. NLC is not the voice of Nigeria. It should wait till 2027 if it is interested in joining the electoral process.”

    • President visits Afenifere leader

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday said his administration would lay a solid foundation before restructuring the country to foster proper federalism.

Shedding light on conditions for an overhaul, he explained that a proper foundation would involve carrying out successful economic and fiscal reforms capable of supporting a restructured country.

The president, who said his administration would not rush the process, stressed that restructuring should address the concerns for equity and justice.

The President and the governors have already agreed on the setting up of state police and the modalities are to be worked out soon by the federal and state governments.

However, the President emphasised that if a proper foundation to support restructuring is not laid, it will collapse.

President Tinubu spoke yesterday during his visit to Akure, the Ondo State capital.

He also visited Owo to commiserate with the family of the late former Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and the Olowo of Owo Oba Gbadegesin Ogunoye.

In Akure, he visited the leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural organisation Afenifere, Chief Reuben Fasoranti.

During his visit to the nonagenarian, the President, accompanied by former All Progressives Congress (APC) Interim National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, also assured that his economic and political reforms will reposition the country.

He showed the Afenifere leader his Certificate of Return given to him by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after winning the February 25, 2023 presidential election.

Pa Fasoranti’s address read by Oba Olu Falae, Olu of Ilu Aabo, Akure, hailed President Tinubu’s courage and sagacity, which made him implement the Oronsanye Report as the basis for reforming the Public Service.

He reminded him that he was the first Afenifere member to be elected President.

Fasoranti noted that the president’s performance reflected his understanding of the gravity of his mandate, “which is to show the Nigerian people that a good government is possible.”

He urged him to tackle the challenge of constitutional reforms with courage, fairness and determination.

The elder statesman and one-time Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) said the country should seek a future where regional competitions would herald a healthy rivalry, reminiscent of the First Republic.

Hailing the President on his decision on state police, he also suggested some innovative ideas that will assist the Federal Government in carrying out its reforms across the critical sectors.

Fasoranti said: “We seek, therefore, a true Federal Republic that would reflect fiscal federalism.

“If the derivation principle is good for oil, why is it not good for Value Added Tax for example?

“We believe a review of the 2014 National Constitutional Conference would help you in charting the course.

“For the people of the Southwest, restructuring also has a more pressing meaning.

“Today, Nigeria has a population of 200 million which would double in the next 25 years to 400 million.

“However, the Southwest is facing an avalanche of migration from the other zones of the country to the extent that in 25 years, if the current trend continues, the Southwest would be home to 50 per cent of the population of Nigeria.

“By this time, the states of Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo would be home to, at least, 200 million people. We need to plan for this eventuality on a regional scale.

“We need to be prepared so that our region will not be overwhelmed by imported challenges.”

He added: “Mr President, please, also seek institutional reforms that would strengthen our federation and make Nigeria safer and more prosperous.

“Try and balance the budget and execute capital projects that would create more employment. We thank you for welcoming the idea of state policing.

“We want each of the geo-political zones to have greater responsibilities for security, food production and infrastructural development.

“Since the removal of fuel subsidy, which was costing Nigeria 10 billion dollars yearly, the state governments have been receiving hefty allocations from the Federation account.

“Mr President should persuade the governors to allow this change of fortune for the states to reflect at the grassroots so that life can be better for our people. They should not just buy rice and yams for the people.

“They should create employment, improve education and build new infrastructure. Today, life is truly challenging for most people and the state governments have an important role to play in transforming society.

“You have done well with trying to reposition our economy and reform the public service.

“We salute your courage in tackling many issues that have remained unresolved for many years.”

President Tinubu told the Afenifere leaders that he knew the challenges when he took the oath as President.

He said: “I prayed for it, I danced for it, I campaigned for it and I got it. I know the enormous responsibility. So, don’t pity me. Baba, just sit down and relax.”

President Tinubu said he had started building structures that could not be reversed, assuring that these economic, social and political structures would restore national glory.

The President said the country would soon pay off the loans it borrowed to free it from foreign debt.

President Tinubu, who acknowledged the pains Nigerians are going through due to oil subsidy removal, said Nigeria will overcome the challenges, stressing that his policies will bring effective solutions.

    Mrs Akeredolu thanks the president

Speaking with reporters, Mrs Akeredolu thanked the President for the visit, during which he held a meeting with the former First Lady.

She said: “On behalf of my family, I appreciate Mr. President. We understood he couldn’t attend the burial ceremony due to the dictate of Yoruba culture. He couldn’t have attended the burial of his younger brother.

“Coming today is a big deal because we are in a better atmosphere.

“I also express my profound gratitude to the Southern Governors for their immense financial contributions to the burial, most especially, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who singlehandedly brought Aketi’s remains back to Nigeria.

“We appreciate this huge show of love and we are grateful and forever indebted to him.

“I requested that Mr. President see where Aketi has been laid to rest and he followed me. We are deeply grateful to Mr. President for coming. He’s indeed, Aketi’s brother and friend.

“I told Mr. President, yes, Aketi has left, but he lives because he left behind legacies.

“It is our wish that those legacies continue and are built upon where necessary.”

    Visit turns campaign carnival

There was drama as Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and other governorship aspirants clashed over a directive by the state government that the president’s visit was not political.

In a statement, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, clarified that the visit was not a political or party affair.

Adeniyan said: “Only government officials and those accredited by the government will have the opportunity to receive the president at the airport, not a campaign crowd.”

However, the visit became a campaign carnival of sorts as supporters of the governor lined up major streets leading to the airport to cheer him.

Adeniyan’s clarification followed the complaint by an aspirant, Wale Akinterinwa, that the directive by Aiyedatiwa was meant to prevent members and leaders of Ondo State All Progressives Congress (APC) who are not in his camp from welcoming the president at the airport.

A statement by the spokesman of Wale Akinterinwa Campaign Structure, Segun Ajiboye, described the directive as most undemocratic, disrespectful, unreasonable and a disdainful ‘attempt by any chief executive in the annals of democracy in Nigeria.’

It reads: “The directive that no supporter or aspirant should come to the airport to welcome Mr President, who is on a private visit and not on a state visit, is a directive from ignorant minds in Alagbaka.

“It is a tradition that whenever the President visits any state, members of his party offer him their love and support by welcoming him in their droves. It does not matter whether it is election year or not.

“We reject the directive that neither our leader, Wale Akinterinwa, nor his supporters should come near the airport to welcome Mr. President.

“We further reject the assertion that the governor is in charge of the President’s safety in Ondo State during this visit.

“It must also be put on record that the airport is under federal law superintendent by FAAN.

“So, Mr Governor cannot give any order or lay claim to any powers he does not possess.”

Tinubu committed to making life better for Nigerians, says Akume

President Bola Tinubu wants the best for Nigerians and is committed to improving the lives and welfare of the citizens, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume said yesterday.

Akume spoke while inaugurating the Geo-Spatial Centre of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Abuja.

The centre would help in processing data for information gathering, research, and forecasting for disaster management.

The NEMA geo-spatial centre, formerly called Geographic Information System (GIS), is a technology that is used in all phases of disaster management, such as preparedness, mitigation, response, recovery, and rehabilitation.

Akume said: “The President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, means well for this country and is committed to improving on the lives and welfare of the citizens.

“Let me assure you of the continued support of the Federal Government to re-invigorate the public service to be more productive and responsive to the yearnings of the people and move the country forward.”

The SGF said the NEMA centre would boost disaster forecasting, data mapping, and information management system.

He said: “The world is presently confronted by increasing global upsurge in magnitude and complexity of various disasters that have affected many countries, as evidenced in draughts, floods, desertification, famine, and even communal crises arising from competition over land use and ownership.”

“Unfortunately, Nigeria is not isolated from the consequences of the global weather-related crises. The consequences of these are evidenced in various disasters that have affected many communities and resulted in loss of lives, injuries, destruction of livelihoods, and forced displacement amongst others.

“This underscore the commitment by the Federal Government in the areas of disaster management aimed at providing necessary supports to the affected citizens.

“In addition to providing succor to disaster-affected persons, other aspects of disaster management cycles are equally very essential. I want to commend the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for the success in establishing the centre. It will support in disaster forecasting, data mapping, and information management system.”

NEMA’s Director General Mustpha Ahmed described the centre as critical to learning and research for planning, prevention, preparedness, and response to disasters.

According to him, it will help rebuilding in the aftermath of disasters.

He said: “This is one of the groundbreaking achievements of the administration of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), in the area of Information Technology and efforts to curtail the adverse effects of natural hazards on the entire citizenry of Nigeria and their properties.

“This centre is critical to learning and research for planning, prevention, preparedness, and response to disasters. It will enable rebuilding back better in the aftermath of Disasters.

“It is worthy of note that the NEMA geo-spatial centre was in a very dysfunctional condition when I assumed office as the chief executive of the agency. Realising the importance of this centre, the management brainstormed on an urgent approach to resuscitate the centre to international standard.

“Today’s event portrays evidence of support from the President, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Bola Tinubu, the collective effort of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), and the management of NEMA.”

The NEMA geo-spatial centre was established to collect, collate, store, analyse, and display geo-referenced disaster data within the country to aid efficient decision making in planning, search and rescue, response, recovery, and rehabilitation as well as disseminate such for humanitarian interventions.
