Integrous, accountable judicial systems will strengthen democracy in West Africa – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu on Thursday, February 22, underscored the importance of West African judicial systems maintaining their integrity and accountability, noting that this is vital for enhancing democracy throughout the region.

President Tinubu made these remarks at a meeting with a delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Judicial Council, led by Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), and Chairman of the Council, at the State House in Abuja.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the President also reaffirmed his commitment, as the Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, to advancing judicial reforms in the region, with determined support.

”We are committed to transformative democracy because we believe the judiciary can protect democracy.

”We are ready to support you as learned minds who have the requisite experience and institutional memory to comprehensively reform our institutions. I assure you, as Chairman of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, that the judiciary is one of the pillars to protect our democracy and it is only in this regard that we can make a difference on the continent,” the President said.

President Tinubu congratulated judges from member-states who participated in the two-day council meeting in Abuja, applauding the successful conclusion of their deliberations.

He assured them that their recommendations would receive utmost consideration by the Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS.

”We will work with you to ensure that your expertise is employed to promote justice in our democratic experiences on the continent and in the region. You are truly the last hope of the common man across our sub-region,” President Tinubu added.

Speaking on behalf of the ECOWAS Judicial Council, Justice Ariwoola emphasized the Council’s commitment to facilitating the effective functioning of the ECOWAS judicial system.

He said the Council, at the end of its meeting in Abuja, agreed to establish two sub-committees to address pertinent judiciary-related issues in the region.

He also said the first sub-committee will look into the rules of procedure of the Council itself, which were found to be inadequate.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria explained that members from Benin Republic, Guinea-Bissau, Ghana, The Gambia, and Sierra Leone have been tasked to work on the rules of procedure on the Judicial Council.

Justice Ariwoola further explained that the Council of Ministers had tasked the Judicial Council, in collaboration with the Commission and the Community Court, to address the enforcement of judgments issued by the community court.

”The members of this second sub-committee are: Senegal, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Cabo Verde, and Togo,” he added.

Justice Ariwoola stated that both sub-committees would present their findings to the Judicial Council, which would subsequently make recommendations to the Authority of Heads of State and Government.

Tinubu means well for Nigeria, says Senator Karimi

The Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Sunday Karimi, on Thursday, February 22, said that President Bola Tinubu meant well for the country despite current challenges.

He also advocated for national reorientation for the citizens as a practical way to tackle the multifaceted challenges facing Nigeria as a nation

Karimi, who is the chairman of the Senate Committee on Services, made these assertions in a statement he made available to reporters in Abuja on the state of the nation.

He said: “As we attempt to get things right, we have to deal with the plague that is rooted in our national lifestyles.

“That is the plague of getting rich through any means, no matter how dirty. That’s the reason kidnapping has remained a big-time business in Nigeria. That is why people are stealing from the government every day and getting away with plea bargains.

“There is a need for national reorientation to deal with the root of all our problems. ‘He that covereth his sins shall not prosper, but he that confesseth and forsake them, the Lord will have mercy.’

“Floating of the Naira in the Forex market is not working yet, because of the inherent corruption and indiscipline in our national lifestyles.

“Let us face the reality, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu mean well for our nation by introducing the single exchange rate, instead of continuing with multiple exchange rates that he met, through which some privileged Nigerians had turned themselves into multi-billionaires owning financial houses all over the place at the expense of our country.

“To be frank, many Nigerians are not patriotic, the tendency is always to defraud the system and get rich quickly. They will cut corners, round trip, and warehouse dollars with stolen funds.

“Most of the Bureau De Change (BDC) today are owned by these same set of people. They are doing all sorts of things to frustrate the lofty plan of President Tinubu.

“The recent N30 billion each given to State Governments for palliative to reduce the problems of the suffering masses, most of the money will find its way to the forex market thereby further devaluing the Naira and the masses will be at the receiving end because the prices of goods and services will go haywire as we are currently witnessing in the country.

“As a Distinguished Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I make bold to say that once the National reorientation is vigorously pursued, within the next six months or so, Nigeria will change for the better and a toast of the International Community, especially with the type of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the nation’s President and crops of the lawmakers at the National Assembly.

“It is not magic, just let us put this to a test for months and watch what will happen to our country, Nigeria has what it will take to make it rise again and take her rightful position in the Comity of Nations.”

Opu-Nembe crisis: Coalition urges Tinubu to ensure justice for victims

President Bola Tinubu has been urged to intervene and resolve the Opu-Nembe conflict in Bayelsa state.

The plea was conveyed through an open letter signed on Wednesday, February 21, by the stakeholders in the state.

The letter, signed by Chief E.T. Ikoli, Chief Johnbull Efere, Afuroyanate Beredugo, Naomi Jonah, Alanabo Digigha, and Mr. Ayebaemi Kieriseiye, outlined the distressing occurrence of unlawful killings during the conflict.

The letter disclosed that the Inspector General of Police had initiated a criminal investigation into the tragic incident that occurred on February 15, resulting in the loss of innocent lives within the community.

According to an open letter, gunmen attacked the community, leading to the deaths of Baite Agala, Queen Kieriseiye, and Inikio Walter, who were unarmed.

The attackers, the coalition said, also caused significant damage to property worth millions of naira and left many residents homeless.

The letter claimed that gunmen have since August 2023 occupied the community, causing fear among the populace.

It said that many residents who opposed the attackers’ presence have either fled or lived in constant fear of retaliation.

The letter read in part: “Your Excellency, your adherence to the rule of law and the principles of democracy have added prestige to the international reputation of Nigeria, which gave rise to your election as Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) within 41 days of your swearing-in as president.

“You’ve shown Nigerians and indeed the international community that you’re committed to the unity and progress of the country. Your non-interference in legal matters including election petitions across the country has distinguished you as a lover of the rule of law.

“Despite the immense power you wield as our Commander-in-Chief, you provided a level playing field for all candidates and indeed citizens to get justice from the judiciary. For this and more, we’re grateful.

“However, we’re constrained to write you this open letter due to a disturbing miscarriage of justice that has been hatched and is about to be perpetuated regarding the Opu-Nembe crisis that we hate to admit has taken our Kingdom backward.

“We can’t deny the fact that Opu-Nembe Kingdom in Nembe local government area of Bayelsa state like most communities in Nigeria has had its share of violence mostly triggered by political, communal and economic sentiments. A case in point is the heinous violent attack that occurred on the 15th of February 2023, ahead of the just concluded Bayelsa general election.

“At this juncture, we are forced to ask the following questions: What will be the fate of the families of the victims if the perpetrators are freed without prosecution? Will the Nigerian judiciary be allowed to dispense justice and bring a form of respite to the bereaved?

“Your Excellency, Opu-Nembe bleeds following the loss of lives and wanton destruction of properties by these hoodlums now occupying our community and only justice can bring restoration and progress.

“The strength of our democracy depends on the integrity of our institutions and the trust of our citizens.”

The letter appealed to President Tinubu to ask the Attorney General to order and take decisive action to rectify any order that may have been given surreptitiously on Opu-Nembe crisis.

The stakeholders urged for immediate measures to rebuild trust in the judiciary and reassert its dedication to preserving the principles of justice and equality for everyone.

  • Tinubu committed to good governance – Wike

Tinubu committed to good governance – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Wednesday, February 21, said President Bola Tinubu is committed to good governance.

Wike said the hardship being experienced by Nigerians would soon be a thing of the past.

He made the plea while inaugurating the construction of access roads to Saburi 1 and 2 in Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), in Abuja.

Wike said the FCT Administration would construct Gwagwa, Karimo to Deidei road, to ease traffic congestion.

The road begins from the Outer Northern Expressway (Murtala Mohammed Expressway, also known as Zuba Kubwa Expressway) to Old Keffi Road, near Dei-Dei International Market.

The decision to construct the road followed a request by the AMAC chairman, Christopher Maikalangu, for the minister to consider expanding the road to ease traffic congestion.

Maikalangu had described the road as a strategic commercial road in the whole of FCT, but in a bad state, narrow and required expansion for the road users.

He also said the Saburi Road from the expressway to Old Keffi Road would ease the suffering of the people, particularly during the rainy season.

He added that the road, when completed, would trigger, and provoke the enormous socio-economic activities and other development strides in the area.

Responding, Wike asked the people at the event if they agreed with Maikalangu on the Gwagwa-Karimo-Deidei road, and the highly elated residents anonymously answered yes.

The minister, thereafter, said: “Consider it to be done. This, according to him, is the essence of governance when the government responds to the needs of the people.

“Mr President has emphasized that our people in the rural areas must be given attention because that constitutes the larger part of the population.

“So. It is not only where the elite are living, but also where the poor ones are so that we will be able to reduce the level of insecurity, make economic activities thrive and have our farmers bring in their goods to the market.”

He called on the residents to pray for President Tinubu for good health and God’s guidance to be able to keep his campaign promise of providing dividends of democracy to the people.

He said the construction of additional roads across the six areas councils of the FCT would be inaugurated in the next three months.

Wike said the commitment was part of efforts to keep people’s hope alive in line with the renewed hope agenda of President Tinubu.

He appealed to the Senate and House Committees on FCT to support in passing the FCT statutory budget which would be submitted soon to enable the Administration to deliver more roads and other projects in rural communities.

Earlier, the Chief of Jiwa, Alhaji Idris Musa, thanked Wike for constructing rural roads across the six area councils.

  • Tinubu’s Renewed Hope cities: It’s housing and more

Tinubu’s Renewed Hope cities: It’s housing and more

    • By Abdulaziz Abdulaziz

Penultimate Thursday at Karsana, a suburban of Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu performed the ground-breaking ceremony of the pilot phase of his ambitious housing project tagged Renewed Hope Cities and Estates Development Programme. Under the first phase of the scheme, 50,000 units of houses are planned to be delivered to Nigerians across the 36 states and the FCT by the end of 2024. Aside the site for the 3,112 which is opened, similar construction sites are active in 12 states around the nation. Subsequently more sites will be activated for the simultaneous mass housing project across the country.

The intention, as the president himself said at the ground-breaking ceremony, is to turn Nigeria into a large construction site with the attendant massive job creation and wealth redistribution. This ambitious project would certainly place the Tinubu administration in a prime spot when the history of mass housing in Nigeria is written.

Formal intervention in the housing sector in Nigeria has a long history dating back to the outbreak of the bubonic plaque in Lagos in 1928. Moving forward, the entire official development plan documents in Nigeria, including the four National Development Plans (1962-1984), had recognized the need for increasing the housing stock in Nigeria, as well as, the need for affordable houses. Despite the work at the policy level, Nigeria has continued to face a significant housing deficit, with millions of its citizens lacking adequate and affordable housing. By 2018 the housing deficit was estimated to be about 17-20 million units. While this deficit poses serious social problem, it also hampers economic development and gets complicated with every passing day (read, every birth!).

It is with this realisation that the then APC candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu laid out his vision for the mortgage and housing sector in his elaborate campaign manifesto. The concept is hinged on his longstanding understanding of the economic development and social justice nexus of housing development.

President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope City housing projects offers a tangible step at building dynamic, integrated, and self-sustaining communities, equipped with amenities to enhance the quality of living for residents, especially the targeted low-income earners.

Speaking on the determination of his administration to ensure that Nigeria’s housing deficit is bridged, the president said he is determined to face the housing challenge bedevilling the nation with the boldness and urgency that it requires.

“We aim to promote Public Private Partnership (PPP) collaborations that attract domestic, foreign, and diaspora investments. We also aim to design and implement incentive schemes, boost our capital market while enhancing the governance and risk management frameworks to ensure their stability, transparency and integrity.

“We are resolved to facing the housing challenge with the clarity of purpose and determination that is required to break all the barriers that stand in our way of success. That is why I took the historic decision of separating the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development from Works so it can be fully aligned towards tackling the nation’s massive housing problem. That is also why I have appointed experienced professionals with proven track records of delivering in the housing sector to lead the ministry,” President Tinubu had said

These low-cost urban housing projects offer a promising solution to address both the housing shortage and stimulate economic growth. While providing affordable housing options, these projects are creating jobs, enhancing living standards, and hold the potential to catalyse economic activities nationwide.

Development economists say low-cost urban housing projects have the potential to stimulate economic growth through multiple channels. Firstly, by increasing access to affordable housing, these projects enhance household welfare and disposable income. When families spend less on housing, they have more resources to allocate towards education, healthcare, and other essential needs, thereby contributing to poverty reduction and human capital development. Moreover, improved housing conditions lead to better health outcomes, reducing healthcare costs and boosting productivity.

Read Also: Tinubu: Boldly steering the future towards stability and growth

One of the significant benefits of low-cost urban housing projects is their potential to generate employment opportunities. The construction sector is a major driver of employment and economic growth in many countries. By investing in housing projects, Nigeria can create jobs across various stages of the construction value chain, including design, engineering, manufacturing, and site management. Moreover, these projects require skilled and unskilled labour, offering employment opportunities to a diverse workforce. The multiplier effect of job creation in the construction sector extends to other industries, such as manufacturing, transportation, and retail, further stimulating economic activity. The project designers estimated that every single house will provide 25 direct and indirect jobs. So, the 20,000 housing units planned for the Federal Capital Territory alone will create 500,000 jobs.

These Renewed Hope Cities initiative present a viable strategy to address Nigeria’s housing deficit. These projects focus on providing affordable housing solutions that cater to the needs of low-income earners. By leveraging innovative construction techniques, cost-effective materials, and sustainable designs, these projects aim to deliver quality housing at affordable prices. Moreover, they will foster inclusive development, ensuring that those in the lower wrung of the social cadre, especially workers across Nigeria have access to decent housing options.

The initiative is also attracting private investment and will spur real estate development. As the demand for housing grows, developers and investors are incentivized to participate in the market, leading to increased construction activity and property transactions. This influx of investment not only creates jobs but also stimulates demand for ancillary goods and services, such as furniture, appliances, and utilities. Additionally, improved infrastructure associated with housing projects, such as roads, water supply, and sanitation facilities, enhances the overall urban environment and attracts further investment.

Closing the housing deficit in Nigeria and stimulating economic growth through the Renewed Hope City housing project is a major tick in President Tinubu’s wish list and campaign promises. But like all big ticket projects, filling the gaping hole in our housing need is a multifaceted endeavour that requires concerted efforts from all stakeholders, especially mortgage institutions and developers

President Tinubu has taken a big leap in this regard and with innovation, collaboration, sustained commitment, right policies and investments, Nigeria will unlock the full potential of low-cost urban housing projects to build a more prosperous and inclusive society.
