Ondo 2024: Call Aiyedatiwa to order, group begs Tinubu

The Oke for Sunshine Forum (OSF), a group within the Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has urged President Bola  Tinubu to call Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to order before collapsing the party in the state.

In a statement signed by the group’s coordinator, Olushola Akintade, the forum described the governor’s behavioir as that of a ‘desperate politician’ willing to sabotage the party’s stability in the state for personal ambitions.

The group claimed that the governor’s alliances are now with the people previously opposed by the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

The group, however, commended the six lawmakers who, in response to the governor’s actions, addressed President Tinubu in a letter titled “Save Our Soul.”

The statement reads: “We are glad that the lawmakers are indeed talking and not keeping quiet about the seemingly unfortunate situation.

“It is time for President Bola Tinubu to call the Governor to order. His actions so far have continued to further polarise the party among negative interests.

“Those known as enemies of the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu are the ones the Governor is romancing because of his ambition.

“The Oke for Sunshine Forum commends the lawmakers for being bold, telling the truth to power, and demanding a further responsible leadership which will hold the party together ahead of future electoral contests. We hope an action is taken soon.”

The African Union (AU) has appointed President Bola Tinubu as its Champion for Human Resources for Health and Community Health Delivery Partnership.

A statement issued on Friday, February 16, by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, said that President Tinubu became AU’s choice for the appointment because of his ambitious, innovative, and people-focused efforts in the sector.

According to the statement, among other reasons, President Tinubu’s commitment to training 120,000 front line healthcare workers within a period of 16 months and the resolve to double the presence of primary healthcare facilities across all council areas of the federation, from 8,800 to over 17,000 positioned him as the right man.

“President Bola Tinubu has been appointed as the African Union (AU) Champion for Human Resources for Health and Community Health Delivery Partnership against the backdrop of his ambitious, innovative, and people-focused efforts in the sector.

“In recognition of President Tinubu’s commitment to train 120,000 frontline health workers nationwide within 16 months and to double the number of primary health facilities in communities across all local government areas of the federation from 8,800 to over 17,000 over the next three years; his doubling of health personnel enrollment capacity from accredited nursing and midwifery institutions to accommodate the new demand created by new facilities across Nigeria, and his resolve to establish a paid volunteer youth force of social accountability officers to monitor the operational functioning and financial integrity of primary health centres, the African Union has identified the Nigerian leader as the right champion for this noble and actionable continental effort.

“The Commission of the African Union (Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention — Africa CDC) in a letter to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said President Tinubu was appointed on the recommendation of the Committee of Heads of State and Government of Africa CDC, under the leadership of His Excellency, President Azali Assoumani, President of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union.

Don’t give Tinubu wrong advice on hardship, Lukman warns APC leaders

Amidst the current economic hardship, former member of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Salihu Lukman has advised leaders of the ruling party not to give President Bola Ahmed Tinubu wrong advice in his efforts at solving the challenges facing the country.

His advice was contained in a statement titled: “APC and question of liability, Open Letter to APC Leaders,” in Abuja on Friday.

Lukman, who was a former APC National Vice Chairman (North West), noted that former President Muhammadu Buhari’s failure could be traced to the inability of party leaders to sincerely give patriotic advice on policies.

Lukman maintained that as things are in the country, it is paramount for APC leaders to return to their old mode of acting as visionary politicians and initiate deeply more substantive political reforms in the country to reposition the APC and return it to its founding vision of becoming a progressive political.

According to him: “Given this reality, it is painful to admit that both the APC as a party and the government of President Tinubu are becoming increasingly unpopular with Nigerians.

“No one should be deceived that given the way we are becoming more and more unpopular; we are faced with the risk of rebellion by ordinary Nigerians.”

Scholar to Nigerians: be patient with President Tinubu

Associate Professor, in the Department of Foreign Languages, Lagos State University, LASU, Saheed Timehin has advocated Islamic cooperative system for Imams and Alfas in order to meet their economic needs.

Dr Timehin said the system which is operative in Indonesia if incorporated, would help in making Imams and Alfas remain focused on the spiritual development of their followers and stay within the confines of their spiritual obligations.

Also, another scholar in the department of Islamic studies, University of Lagos, UNILAG, Dr Basheer AbdulRaheem urged Nigerians to be patient with President Tinubu in his efforts to fix Nigeria’s economy, adding that things had gone from bad to worse and will require only a drastic approach.

The scholars stated this during their presentations at the one-day conference for Imam and Alfas organised by Eti-Osa council of Imams and Alfas held at the Islamic Center, Oba Ojomu drive, Ajah, Lagos, recently.

Delivering a lecture on “Incentives for Mosque’s Custodian”, Dr Timehin stated that imam occupy sensitive positions in the society and that they should not be allowed to derail from those important roles naturally assigned to them. He added that stipends and salaries are not enough for Imams, other legitimate means of livelihood should be made available to them.

According to Timehin, some Imams and Alfas indulge in shirk, diabolical acts, cultism among other unholy acts in order to meet their financial obligations, adding Imams should seek a legitimate source of income, and not rely on stipends from mosque’s committee and offerings at Islamic functions.

He added that imam should do appraisal of himself, know his weakness and guide against it at all times.

Speaking on the topic, “Images of Imam Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow”, Dr Basheer AbdulRaheem stated that Imam can only become a role model and good representative of Prophet Muhammad if he jettissones the prestige and money that come with it.

Dr AbdulRaheem said an ideal Imam must be trustworthy, pious, patient, humble, sound aqeedah among others.

“An Imam should be a representative of Prophet Muhammad. (s.a.w) They are supposed to be a role model, but unfortunately, there are those who do not adhere to the teachings and practice of Prophet Muhammad. Those who are devinely called are the true representatives of the Prophet while those who called thmeselves, doing all sorts of things are those you see doing evils. We can’t rule out having some people as Alfas and Imams but working against the principle of Islam.

Feilding question on the current economic hardship in the country, he urged Nigerians to be patient with President Tinubu, adding that the route taken by the president though tough but will usher in better days in the nearest future.

“I really empathise with the present government considering how bad our economic situation is. We just have to keep praying for the President. It was common knowledge that things had gone from bad to worse; and needed a drastic approach. He has to take this route, we just have to be patient and keep praying for him to take us out of the woods. It is difficult though, but we have to go through this to enjoy it later,” he said.

Wife of deputy governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat, said corruption was the biggest evil in every society, which must be eliminated in every way possible. Mrs. Hamzat said the societal menace had affected individuals’ character and value.

“This societal menace has affected our character and values. Our society mindlessly celebrates material wealth, corruption mostly occurs in relation to money,” she said.

She stressed the importance of parental guidance in the lives of children.

According to her, “we cannot continue to blame others for our own deficiencies because the government cannot do everything.”

Dr. Tinubu, who is also the Iyalode of Lagos, lamented the high level of corruption among people.

She urged citizens to desist from participating in any form of corruption

“Corruption is a menace that has eaten deep into the fabric of the nation, and as such, needs to be curbed,” she said.

    • States get nod to strengthen  forest guards in battle against bandits, kidnappers

Proponents of state police scored a major victory yesterday.

The Federal Government yielded to calls by states and eminent Nigerians for it.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the modalities for its establishment and operation will be designed shortly.

President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima met with governors, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS) and ministers – FCT, Agriculture and Information – at the State House.

The emergency meeting, which was held at the Council Chambers, took decisions on how to tackle rising food costs and insecurity, among others.

President Tinubu also said more personnel would be recruited for the police.

Ahead of that, he urged states to strengthen their forest rangers/guards.

Bandits encamp in the forests from where they launch attacks.

Kidnappers also take their victims into the forest where they are kept during negotiations for ransom payments.

The President called for collaboration to enable states to increase local food production.

He believes enough food can be produced locally to avoid imports.

President Tinubu pleaded with governors to pay salary arrears, pension and gratuities since states now get more revenue from the federation account.

“Spend the money, don’t spend the people,” President Tinubu told the governors.

The President said his administration was evolving home-grown solutions to food security challenges.

He okayed the establishment of a committee comprising governors and representatives of the Federal Government to, among others, explore the modalities for establishing state police.

The President further endorsed the training and equipping of forest rangers by sub-national governments to safeguard human and natural resources in local communities.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicly, Ajuri Ngelale, the President said: ‘’My position at this meeting is that we must move aggressively and establish a committee to look critically at the issues raised, including the possibility of establishing state police.

“From Kano, we have read reports about large-scale hoarding of food in some warehouses.

“The National Security Adviser (NSA), the Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services should coordinate very closely and ensure that security agencies in the states inspect such warehouses with follow-up action.

“We must ensure that speculators, hoarders, and rent seekers are not allowed to sabotage our efforts in ensuring the wide availability of food to all Nigerians.

“What I will not do is to set a price control board. I will not also approve the importation of food.

“We should be able to get ourselves out of the situation we found ourselves in because importation will allow rent seekers to perpetrate fraud and mismanagement at our collective expense.

“We would rather support farmers with the schemes that will make them go to the farm and grow more food for everyone in the country.

“We must also look at the rapid but thoughtful implementation of our livestock development and management plans, including dairy farming and others.”

President Tinubu urged the governors to trust the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) with the monetary policy.

He emphasised the importance of allowing designated institutions to fulfil their mandate.

He said the “cacophony of postulations” on the fluctuation of foreign exchange rates was unduly affecting the market negatively.

“Every one of us cannot be an expert. If we have given someone an assignment, let us allow them to do it.

“If they cannot do it, then we find a way to quickly get them out of the system,” the President said.

President Tinubu asked the governors to always make the welfare and prosperity of the people a priority of their development programmes.

He assured them that the Federal Government would continue to work diligently to improve the nation’s revenue profile.

The President and the governors stressed the importance of working together to address issues of insecurity, food security, and out-of-school children.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) affirmed the governors’ commitment to partnering with the Federal Government.

In a subsequent briefing, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, elaborated on the meeting’s outcome.

He was accompanied by Governors Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ubah Sani (Kaduna) and Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta).

The minister said: “At this point, the nation requires food to be brought out so that we can control prices and put food on the table of most Nigerians.

“Other commodity traders are busy hoarding these commodities so that Nigerians will suffer or they will make more money as a result. ⁣

“So the governors and Mr. President have taken this decision that security agencies will collaborate with the state governors to ensure that this ends.”⁣

On insecurity, the minister said: “Mr. President and the governors discussed the possibility of improving the numerical strength of forest rangers.⁣

“There were also discussions on state police. The Federal Government and the state governments are mulling the possibility of setting up state police.

“Of course, this is still going to be further discussed. A lot of work has to be done in that direction.

“Both the Federal Government and the state governments agree on the necessity of having state police.

“This is a significant shift. More work needs to be done in that direction.”

  • President Tinubu and the vultures

    President Tinubu and the vultures

If I were to choose between the governed and its government, I will choose the latter. This is because it has been established that the former are fortune hunters who in a world of ‘survival of the fittest’, seize every available opportunity to inflict hardship on their fellow compatriots while the latter is saddled with the onerous task of keeping man who is often insane under control.  Nothing brings this home more vividly than the ongoing war of attrition being waged not just by the political and economic elite, but by ordinary Nigerians against Nigerians.

We have all become vultures feeding on the blood of the most vulnerable. From fuel subsidy scammers, foreign exchange speculators to the Kano food distributors who short-changed farmers but locked up food items in warehouses while people starve, the egg and bread hawker on the streets of Lagos who attributed high cost of their wares to dollar exchange rate, the first instinct is always how to exploit the vulnerable.

I discovered from a nearby grocery store last Sunday that the price of a loaf of bread had gone up to N1, 300. It used to be N1, 000. Since there was no value added, I decided to drive to another store where I thought I could get ‘coconut bread’ for N1,200. There also, I discovered the price had gone up to N1,600. After wondering when we started importing flour and coconut, I was forced to buy the bread. The story was not different from my neighbour who supplies us fresh eggs from his farm at N2,400 per crate. The price has gone up to N3,500, per crate. He attributed the difference to high cost of drugs needed to treat his birds.

High cost of living has led to demonstration against government in a number of Nigerian cities. Last Thursday, it was the turn of Kano State. The city’s residents took to the streets calling on President Tinubu to come to their rescue as they could not “eat three square meals even the one square meal is now becoming difficult, as a bag of rice which used to go for N25,000 now attracts N70,000. And “Sugar which was sold for N8,000 now goes for N75,000”.

But as if to confirm we are all vultures, three days later, on Sunday February 11, the Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-corruption Commission confiscated 10 warehouses with hoarded assorted foodstuffs in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of the state. According to Muhyl Magaji, the commission’s chairman, “The owners have been issued notice to report to the commission preparatory to facing charges before the court of law for their illegal activities”.

Perhaps we need a journey through memory to remind ourselves how greed by a few fortune-hunters led to the removal of fuel subsidy by government and the floating of the national currency resulting in current massive depreciation and escalating cost of living.

Read Also: BREAKING: Tinubu to commission Lagos red line project Feb 29

Fuel subsidy scam started at the onset of the fourth republic when PDP stalwarts and their sibling defrauded the nation to the tune of N1.7trillion by “forging papers without importing a pint of fuel,” in the words of Audu Ogbe the then PDP national chairman.  A probe by the National Assembly indicted a number of fuel marketers. (Otedola masterminded a DSS sting operation to nail Lawan Farouk for receiving bribe in order redmove his name from the list.)

Then a forensic probe of Sanusi’s (CBN Governor) allegation that $49.8b was not transferred to the federation account by NNPC confirmed $10.8billion was never reconciled. Andrew Yakubu, NNPC group MD later said $8.76B of the amount was used for subsidy. (An Abuja High Court presided over by judge Ahmed Mohammed who ordered EFCC and CBN to transfer $9.8 million and 74,000 pounds recovered from Andrew Yakubu to an account under the control of the Chief Registrar of the court in March 2022, discharged and acquitted him of all charges).

Sanusi however insisted such expenditure without appropriation was unconstitutional especially since subsidy on kerosene had been cancelled by Yar’Adua since June 15, 2009 when it was discovered that ‘if anyone was benefitting, it must be marketers and government officials. Sadly, about N500 billion was purportedly spent on kerosene subsidy in four years when the product was hardly available at filling stations or sold for N150 as against consolidated N50 controlled price. President Jonathan knew about the scam but shielded his friends in PDP, NNPC and the petroleum ministry.

Buhari similarly failed the nation. Isa Yuguda, former governor of Bauchi State and chairman of the committee on subsidy in 2009 told Channels television “I am sad to let Nigerians know what I saw. We came across situations where subsidy was claimed on pipeline that never existed…. Those that claim to pump the product and those that are in the subsidy scam, they just fill papers, invoices and they claim subsidy on it”.

Yuguda was sure Buhari as president who doubled as oil minister for eight years, was aware of the scam. Buhari lacked the political will to act. He chose instead to leave the poisoned apple for his successor by refusing to budget for fuel subsidy beyond June 2023.

But no sooner President Tinubu declared during his inauguration that ‘fuel subsidy was gone’, than the vultures in the guise of marketers swung into action. Within an hour of the statement fuel disappeared from filling stations across Nigeria or sold for about N700 per litre where available.

President Tinubu also admitted inheriting ‘a rotten’ financial system. The Jim Obazee-led special investigation of Emefiele’s tenure as CBN governor was to later unearth a damning report of monumental mismanagement, fraud and arbitrariness, looting, diversion of funds, forgery and collusion against Emefiele and about 15 others.  Specifically, the was an investment of billions of dollars in over 500 banks IN USA, UK and China without approval of CBN board. There was £543,482,213 in fixed deposit in one of the banks in UK.

From alleged manipulation of the forex markets by banks, First Bank, UBA, Zenith, Access and GTB reported a combined N1.38trillion in forex revaluation in the first half of 2023.

As at July 2023, there was also N26.627 trillion in ‘ways and means’, whose “management was dogged by a lot of arbitrariness with funds taken out of the national treasury without necessary authorization”.

Government’s efforts at stabilizing the exchange rate through the unification of the official and parallel market exchange rates “hailed by economists and other stakeholders” have continued to be sabotaged by “some commercial banks who hold long-term foreign exchange positions to enable them profit from the volatile movements of exchange rate”.

In a move to reduce the pressure on the naira, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has raised a 7,000-man special task force across its 14 zonal commands to clamp down on dollar racketeers.

For President Tinubu, the subsidy removal and the floating of the national currency were fait accompli. Unlike President Jonathan and Buhari, there was no escape route. There was just no money to run the government. With 97% of our resources going into servicing debts, borrowing was not an option.

To reduce the burden of Nigerians, President Tinubu must recover our monies from all indicted oil marketers. The banks and some others owe AMCON close to N6trillion. These taxpayers’ monies must be retrieved from the banks and other debtors who are today serving senators or live like princes.

And as an elected sovereign, the president must be reminded he is free to take ‘protective measures including invasion of personal privacy and assault on group culture’ to safeguard the interest of the state.

“New FHA CEO, Hon. Oyetunde Ojo, is a former Member of the House of Representatives with over a decade of work experience in the housing and hospitality industries. He holds a Master’s degree in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Greenwich, United Kingdom.

“In view of President Bola Tinubu’s historic approval of the establishment of Building Materials Hubs across all six of the nation’s geo-political zones; financing and establishment of a National Social Housing Fund for low income and vulnerable groups, and land reforms to collaboratively streamline access to land across all states and unlock nearly $300 billion of dead capital in the sector, his expectations are high that the above-named appointees will hit the ground running in the delivery of affordable housing for millions of Nigerians in need, while providing millions of new job opportunities for Nigeria’s talented youth population presently searching for work.”
