    • Fed Govt seeks focus on road abuse, maintenance, sustainability

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has explained why his administration is revolutionising road infrastructure across the country.

He said the sector plays a critical role in linking farms, industries, and citizens to economic opportunities nationwide.

The President noted that the road infrastructure revolution is inevitable as the sector is the backbone of Nigeria’s socio-economic life, with over 90 per cent of passenger and freight movement in the country relying on roads.

“The condition, reliability, and sustainability of our federal road network, therefore, have a direct bearing on economic productivity, national integration, road safety, and the overall quality of life of Nigerians,” President Tinubu said.

The President spoke yesterday in Abuja during this year’s FERMA Roads Summit, with theme: Sustainable Road Infrastructure for National Growth, highlighting a few flagship interventions that reflect his administration’s renewed focus.

“The Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, spanning approximately 750 kilometres, is designed to unlock Nigeria’s blue economy, enhance connectivity along our coastal corridor, and stimulate tourism, trade, and industrial development.

“Complementing this is the Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway, a historic 1,068-kilometre North-South corridor that will connect the far Northwest of our country to the Atlantic coast, opening new economic frontiers and strengthening national integration.

“Those that are currently being driven are: Abuja-Kaduna, Zaria-Kano Road, Abuja-Lokoja-Benin road, Benin-Asaba Superhighway, and Akwanga-Jos-Bauchi-Gombe.

“Those that have been completed or nearing completion include the Lagos-Ibadan expressway; Bodo-Bony road; Oyo-Ogbomoso Road; Ninth Mile- Oturpo-Makurdi Road; and Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.

“Together, these highways redefine Nigeria’s road transport architecture and symbolise our determination to build infrastructure that unites and grows the nation.

“In addition, the completion of major bridges, most notably the Second Niger Bridge and the rehabilitation of critical assets, such as the Third Mainland Bridge, Eko Bridge, and Carter Bridge in Lagos, as well as strategic links across the Niger Delta and other regions, demonstrate this administration’s resolve to close connectivity gaps and preserve existing assets.

“Importantly, these projects are being executed with a new emphasis on engineering excellence, climate resilience, and long-term service life, with design lives of 50 to 100 years in mind,” President Tinubu said.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, the President stressed that building new roads is half of the task, while maintaining them is also important.

“Sustainable road maintenance is not an option; it is a compelling necessity. Without it, today’s investments become tomorrow’s liabilities,” the President said.

He emphasised FERMA’s mandate in routine audits, post-failure assessments, and data-driven maintenance.

President Tinubu noted that a comprehensive, geo-referenced database of federal roads was being developed to track failures, causes, and interventions.

The President said this would enable Nigeria to shift from emergency repairs to predictive and preventive maintenance.

He outlined key pillars for sustainable road governance, including clear institutional mandates, predictable funding, enforcement of axle-load regulations, use of durable, climate-resilient materials, and public-private partnerships.

“This administration has demonstrated immense political will to achieve the desired objectives,” he said

The Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, who represented Works Minister David Umahi, said road abuse, such as overloading, reckless driving, and unauthorised use, shorten the lifespan of federal roads and drain public resources.

The minister called for stronger measures to protect infrastructure investments.

He noted that while the government continued to invest heavily in road construction and maintenance, misuse of roads undermined those efforts.

Goronyo said: “Road abuse remains a critical challenge. Practices, such as overloading, reckless driving, and unauthorised road use shorten the lifespan of our investments. The consequence is a heavy drain on lean government resources, forcing repeated repairs instead of allowing us to expand and modernise our network.”

The minister hailed President Tinubu for prioritising road infrastructure and backing FERMA’s mandate.

He stressed that the current administration had repositioned infrastructure as a pillar of economic stability and national security.

“Mr. President’s mandate is clear: we are building a $1 trillion economy, and that economy cannot run on failed roads,” Goronyo said.

The minister said the administration was pursuing reforms in infrastructure financing, despite fiscal constraints, including a shift from annual budget dependence to alternative models.

“This administration has made bold choices, despite fiscal constraints. We are accelerating legacy projects, focusing on vital corridors, and moving beyond annual budgets toward Public Private Partnerships, life cycle costing, and innovative resource management,” Goronyo said.

He added that the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund was being used to close funding gaps, stressing that there would be “zero tolerance for waste”.

Outlining the government’s approach to sustainability, Goronyo said it rested on modern construction standards, technology-driven maintenance and climate resilience.

“Sustainability today means three things: adopting modern construction standards, including concrete pavement technology to extend road life; transitioning to technology-driven maintenance, with FERMA leading a proactive, data-driven model; and building climate resilience and local capacity, using materials that withstand changing rainfall patterns while empowering indigenous contractors and Nigerian professionals,” he said.

Goronyo added that sustainability also required institutional and behavioural changes, including predictable funding, stronger coordination among agencies and the private sector, and a shift in attitude towards routine road maintenance.

“Our roads represent a social contract with the Nigerian people. When we build sustainably, we lower food prices, improve healthcare delivery, enhance competitiveness, and unite our nation,” he said.

Goronyo also hailed the National Assembly Committees on FERMA for what he called sustained oversight and budgetary support, as well as Senator Umahi for guiding the sector.

The FERMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Emeka Agbasi, stated that deteriorating road assets, funding constraints, climate-related damage and safety risks are major threats to Nigeria’s economic growth.

He said Nigeria’s dependence on road transport made the challenges urgent, noting that roads carry most passenger and freight movement nationwide.

“Despite their importance, we are all aware of the persistent challenges facing our road sector: deteriorating assets, maintenance backlogs, climate-induced damage, funding constraints, and road safety concerns,” Agbasi said.

The FERMA boss warned that the problems increase transport costs, lengthen travel time, reduce competitiveness and endanger lives.

He said sustainable road infrastructure required a shift from short-term repairs to long-term, lifecycle-based planning, backed by data-driven asset management, predictable maintenance funding and stronger institutional coordination.

He said the summit was timely, stressing that well-maintained roads were critical to trade, job creation, rural development and national cohesion.

Renewed Hope Ambassadors mobilise for 2027, target one million votes for Tinubu in Osun

The Renewed Hope Ambassadors on Tuesday intensified mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 general election, declaring a target of securing one million votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Osun State.

The group inaugurated 30 grassroots canvassers drawn from all local government areas of the state to boost voter engagement and strengthen support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the community level.

The inauguration ceremony, held at the Tinubu/Shettima Campaign Office in Osogbo, attracted a large turnout of grassroots supporters.

Speaking at the event, the Osun State Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Chief Sunday Akere, outlined the responsibilities of the canvassers, saying they were expected to effectively carry out the three key assignments handed to the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through its leadership under Governor Hope Uzodinma.

“We are not looking at anything less than a million votes for the president here in osun because at least we have almost two million registered voters in Osun and it is very sad that when we do elections we always have less than 500,000 people voting and that is why we want them to go to the grassroots and mobilize the people, do the outreach and engage the people so that the president will have minimum of a million votes in Osun.

He added that the group will also work assiduously to first deliver victory for APC  governorship candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji(AMBO) on August 8th 2026.

Also, South-west Zonal Coordinator of Renewed Hope Ambassadors, Senator Adedayo Adeyeye urged the canvassers to be good ambassadors to the president without any fear because he has done wonderfully for Nigeria.

He noted that “SWAGA is still in existence but the renewed hope encompasses all the groups across the country. I am sure every well meaning in Nigeria will want to participate in the re-election of the president.”

The president said the federal government, under the Renewed Hope Agenda, would work with the state to unlock opportunities in agriculture, education, technology, tourism, and the blue economy, to promote inclusive growth and development.

Tinubu gave the assurance in a goodwill message delivered by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, at the celebration of Ondo State’s 50th anniversary held on Tuesday at the Akure Township Stadium.

The event attracted several dignitaries, including Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji; former Ondo State Governor Dr Olusegun Mimiko; Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunusi; as well as other prominent indigenes of the state.

He also praised traditional rulers, elders, civil servants, farmers, artisans, and traders for their roles in the state’s development over the past five decades.

According to him, since its creation, Ondo State has made notable strides in education, public service, culture, and economic development, producing leaders and professionals who have contributed significantly to national progress.

“Fifty years ago, Ondo State was created to empower its people, harness local talent, and bring governance closer to communities. Today, we celebrate a state that has distinguished itself in education, public service, culture, and economic contribution.

“From Akure to Owo, from Ondo to Ikare, and from Okitipupa to the riverine communities of Ilaje, the people of this state have consistently demonstrated diligence, innovation, and unity. You have produced leaders, educators, professionals, and citizens whose contributions have shaped Nigeria’s growth and stability.

“The federal government under the Renewed Hope Agenda remains committed to supporting Ondo State in harnessing these opportunities, improving infrastructure, strengthening security, and empowering communities, ensuring that every citizen benefits from growth and development,” he said.

Describing the golden jubilee as both a celebration and a call to action, President Tinubu urged residents to prioritise unity, peace, and cooperation to sustain development.

He described the youths in the state as the architects of the next fifty years and encouraged them to embrace innovation, education, and discipline.

He further emphasised the need for tolerance and mutual respect, adding that diversity in religion, politics, and culture should serve as a source of strength rather than division.

Tinubu added that the federal government would continue to support initiatives that promote social cohesion and equitable opportunities.

He, however, applauded the government and people of Ondo state on attaining the 50-year milestone and expressed optimism that the next phase of the state’s development would surpass its past achievements.

Earlier, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa described the golden jubilee as both a celebration of the past and a call to shape the future.

Aiyedatiwa said his administration’s development agenda would focus on security, economic diversification, infrastructure renewal, education, healthcare, and transparent governance.

“Our administration is guided by a clear and unwavering conviction that development must be people-centred, inclusive, and sustainable. Accordingly, our vision for Ondo state is anchored on the security of lives and property, economic diversification and value creation, infrastructural renewal and connectivity, human capital development, and accountable governance.

“Fifty years ago, Ondo state emerged not as a bureaucratic adjustment but as the fulfilment of a people’s long-held aspiration for self-expression, self-governance, dignity and destiny.

“Today, it is a living, breathing reality, and tomorrow, by the grace of God and the unity of our people, Ondo State shall stand even taller as a beacon of excellence and progress,” he said.

Aiyedatiwa also declared that his administration’s vision for the next phase of the state’s history would be anchored on people-centred, inclusive, and sustainable development.

He paid tribute to the founding fathers and mothers of the state, as well as farmers, teachers, civil servants, and youths whose sacrifices laid the foundation for development.

“We remember with gratitude our founding fathers and mothers, our revered traditional rulers, visionary political leaders, and courageous students whose sacrifices laid the foundations upon which we now stand,” he said.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for the federal appointments extended to indigenes of Adamawa State.

Leaders of the Numan federation, which represents communities across much of southern Adamawa, also commended the president for what they described as their fair share of federal appointments.

The governor and the Numan Federation leaders spoke at a ceremony held at the traditional headquarters of the federation in Numan town, where prominent figures gathered to honour two appointees from the area, Hon. Zachary Madayi and his wife, Chief Bema Madayi.

Hon. Madayi was recently appointed Renewed Hope Ambassador for Adamawa State, while Chief Bema Madayi was named a federal commissioner with the Federal Character Commission.

Governor Fintiri, who was represented at the civic reception by his deputy, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, said he was pleased that citizens of the state were being considered for federal appointments despite political differences between the Adamawa State Government and the Federal Government.

He noted that before the recent appointments, other Adamawa indigenes, including Malam Nuhu Ribadu of Fufore Local Government Area and Muktar Maiha of Maiha Local Government Area, had been celebrated for their appointments as National Security Adviser and Minister of Livestock, respectively.

Speaking at the event through his son, Mahmud, Ribadu said the recognitions being celebrated marked the beginning of greater responsibilities, expressing confidence that the appointees’ records would open the door to further opportunities.

Earlier, elder statesman and chairman of the occasion, Chief Joel Madaki, thanked President Tinubu, saying the increasing number of federal appointments to the area reflected the administration’s commitment to inclusiveness.

In separate remarks, Hon. Zachary Madayi and Chief Bema Madayi pledged to justify the confidence reposed in them by the president.

  • Why Ebonyi youths endorsed Nwifuru, Tinubu for second term – Commissioner

Why Ebonyi youths endorsed Nwifuru, Tinubu for second term – Commissioner

The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Francis Ori, has revealed how unity among youths in Uburu led to the unanimous endorsement of Governor Francis Nwifuru and President Bola Tinubu for a second term in office.

He described the development as a historic moment for youth solidarity and political stability in the area.

Uburu, the hometown of the current Minister for Works and one of the three major towns in the Ohaozara local government area of the state.

Speaking during an interview, the commissioner explained that Uburu is made up of four autonomous communities and that youths across these communities had previously operated under different youth platforms.

“However, driven by shared interests and appreciation of the governor’s leadership, rival youth groups resolved their differences and dissolved into a single body known as the Uburu Youth Front

According to him, the decision to unite was motivated by Governor Nwifuru’s inclusive governance and youth-friendly policies, which have seen many Uburu youths appointed as commissioners, senior special assistants, special advisers, and board members in the state government.

“The governor is one of us. He has treated Uburu youths as his own, and we felt the best way to appreciate him was to speak with one voice,” the commissioner said.

He noted that the unity of the youths culminated in a solidarity road work exercise and a formal endorsement of the governor for a second term.

The Commissioner said the youths also resolved to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election, alongside the Ebonyi State governor.

Mr Ori said the youths are happy with the president for appointing their son, Senator David Umahi, as Minister for Works.

He noted that the Minister, working under the direction of President Tinubu, has been able to deliver massive infrastructural development to Ebonyi and the Southeast.

“We are very grateful people, and the only way to show gratitude to the President is to give him our votes”, he said

In the 2027 general elections, Engr. Francis Ori expressed confidence that Governor Nwifuru would secure a landslide victory, citing peace, unity, and developmental achievements across the state.

He dismissed fears of strong opposition, arguing that the absence of a cohesive opposition party and the prevailing unity among stakeholders give the governor a clear advantage.

“This is the first time Ebonyi State is enjoying this level of peace. The governor has united communities and stakeholders. There is no room for divisive politics again,” he stated.

The commissioner also highlighted humanitarian efforts through his Orimatic Care Foundation, which recently organized a large-scale Christmas celebration for vulnerable widows across the four Uburu autonomous communities.

He said the foundation, established in 2017, recently distributed rice, wrappers, cash gifts, and other items to over 600 vulnerable widows in Ebonyi State.

“To ensure fairness, we asked the Presidents-General of the communities to select 150 widows from each of the four communities, ensuring that beneficiaries were truly in need,” he explained.

He added that the foundation currently sponsors 36 university students—17 of whom have graduated in professional courses such as medicine, engineering, and law—as well as over 100 pupils in primary and secondary schools.

The commissioner reaffirmed his commitment to youth empowerment, social welfare, and unity, noting that the coming years would see even greater investments in education, humanitarian services, and community development. Ends

  • Tinubu orders clear sharing of power subsidy costs

Tinubu orders clear sharing of power subsidy costs

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to use existing electricity sector laws to make the sharing of power subsidy costs among the Federal, State, and Local Governments clear, practical, and open in the 2026 budget process.

This was disclosed by the Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Dr. Tanimu Yakubu, during a keynote address at the start of a training programme for MDAs on the 2026 post-budget preparation using the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System and the Budget Preparation System in Abuja on Monday.

Yakubu said the President wants the burden of electricity subsidies to be clearly shared so that no level of government is left carrying hidden or unpaid costs.

“Subsidy costs must be explicit, tracked and funded, so they do not return as arrears, liquidity crises or hidden liabilities in the power market,” he said.

He explained that when any level of government decides to keep electricity prices low for citizens, the financial responsibility for that decision must be clearly agreed upon and enforced.

“It also means that if any tier of government chooses affordability interventions, the funding responsibilities must be clear, agreed, and enforceable. This is not punishment. It is alignment,” Yakubu said.

According to him, fair sharing of the burden will encourage better performance in the power sector and stronger support for protecting vulnerable consumers.

“When everyone carries a fair share of the cost, everyone also has an incentive to support cost-reflective efficiency, targeted protection for the vulnerable, and a power market that can actually deliver,” he said.

Yakubu told MDAs that they must now clearly show all subsidy-related costs in their budget plans and avoid pushing unpaid obligations into the power market as debts that later create problems for electricity companies and consumers.

Beyond power subsidies, he said, the Federal Government is changing how projects are treated in the 2026 budget. He noted that projects must be ready to be delivered and, where needed, ready to attract financing before they are included in the budget.

“If it cannot be implemented, it should not be proposed. If it cannot be measured, it should not be defended,” he said.

He warned that listing many projects without proper funding and planning often leads to disappointment for citizens who expect real results on the ground.

“A long list of projects is not a development strategy. It is often a map of disappointment. What citizens feel is delivery—completed roads, reliable power, functional schools, working hospitals,” Yakubu said.

He explained that the government is now focusing on proper project financing, which means that every project must be carefully planned, cost, and matched with a clear source of funding, whether from the federal budget, partnerships with the private sector, or other financial arrangements.

Yakubu said MDAs must show that their projects are ready, with designs, approvals, procurement plans, and clear timelines, as well as explain how each project will be funded and what results Nigerians should expect.

On government spending rules, he disclosed that President Tinubu has directed a review of the Fiscal Responsibility framework to make it stronger and better suited to current economic conditions.

“Fiscal rules are not a slogan. They are the guardrails of the government. Without guardrails, spending becomes impulsive, debt becomes casual, and the budget becomes a statement of intent rather than a tool of delivery,” he said.

He explained that the review will lead to clearer limits on spending, stronger reporting, better control of future financial risks, and a closer link between long-term planning and yearly budgets.

“For MDAs, this changes the conversation. You will not only be asked what you want to spend. You will be asked how it fits the fiscal rules, how it affects sustainability, and what measurable results it will deliver,” Yakubu said.

He urged MDAs to build their proposals around available funds, clearly explain their priorities, and disclose any risks, especially future costs that could fall on the government.

Yakubu also stressed again that the cost of electricity subsidies can no longer be treated as the responsibility of the Federal Government alone.

“Let me be direct. If we want a stable power sector, we must pay for the choices we make. When tariffs are held below cost, a gap is created. That gap is a subsidy. And a subsidy is a bill,” he said.

He added that when the benefits of such decisions are shared across different levels of government, the costs must also be shared in a clear and agreed way.

As part of the 2026 budget process, Yakubu said all MDA proposals will be tested to ensure they match national priorities, can be carried out, offer value for money, and respect the country’s financial limits.

He said the overall goal is to make the 2026 budget focus on completing projects and solving real problems for Nigerians, rather than creating long lists of plans that are never fully delivered.

No nation can thrive without investment in Youths – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has said that no nation could thrive without deliberate investment in its youths.

According to the President, who represented by the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id-Ahmad, Nigerians should not lack quality education due to financial limitations.

Tinubu made the disclosure at the 34th Convocation ceremony and 43rd Founders Day of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna on Sunday.

The President noted that over the past 43 years, the university had distinguished itself as a centre of excellence in science, engineering innovation and applied research.

He said that the administration has expanded access to education through targeted infrastructure investments and the implementation of the student loan scheme.

Prof. Farouk Kuta, Vice-Chancellor of the University, said the ceremony stands as a powerful affirmation of the university community.

He said the community was defined by resilience, creativity, and unwavering dedication to the advancement of knowledge and service to humanity.

Kuta said that the past year recorded exceptional progress, as the university ranked the seventh best university in Nigeria and emerged as the highest ranked specialised university.

He said that the university ranked among the top 10 best in Nigeria and 68th in Africa.

He noted that the strategic expansion of the institution was a decisive step toward fulfilling its mandate as a technology-driven university committed to solving societal challenges.
