MKO Abiola’s ally, Su-Kazeem hails Tinubu’s democratic credentials

A close associate of the acclaimed winner of June 12 presidential election, and elder stateman, Alhaji Sufianu Kazeem popularly called Su-Kazeem has commended democratic credentials of President Bola Tinubu.

Kazeem, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Sukazeem Property Companyt, commended interventions of President Bola Tinubu in Rivers and Ondo state, describing his interventions in political crisis in the two states as courageous action.

A statement by Su-Kazeem noted that the steps taken by Tinubu is the most appropriate constitutional solution that will ensure that the lingering crisis is put to rest, adding that the country is currently experiencing a new dimension of democratic governance which he said is the standard in every developed nations of the world.

He stated that President Tinubu has shown that he is a true Democrat going by his exceptional poise and resolve to ensure peace in the country, saying the intervention is timely and appreciated.

He noted that the people of the state and governance had suffered in the past few months, but the state does not need any further agitation or attention-seeking behavior that could disrupt the progress and development.

He urged former governor Nyesom Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara to know that “Peace before the war is far more better than Peace after the war.”

He called on stakeholders to refocus on their primary responsibilities, emphasising that no personal ambition should overshadow the governance and service delivery to the people of the state

He however berated leadership of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for it’s comment and position on the effort of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu saying, it is unpatriotic.

Igbo title for Tinubu, Shettima will enhance nation integration, says Kalu

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu has said that the conferment of Igno traditional title on President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima will reinforce national cohesion and integration.

Christmas: Tinubu greets Nigerians, says it’s time for nation’s transformation

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Nigerians, especially Christians as they celebrate this year’s Christmas, urging them to use the period to reflect on the life of Jesus Christ.

The president made the appeal in a statement he personally issued on Sunday, December 24.

He said: “Fellow Nigerians, Christmas is a special time of the year for all of us. For  Christians, this time of the year marks the birth of Jesus  Christ and celebrates the hope and redemption that are the hallmarks of Christ’s life.

“For people of all faiths, this is an opportunity to enjoy the company of family, celebrate life, and delight in the gifts of love and friendship that make life worthwhile.

“This is also a time to look out for each other because, amidst the festivities, this time of year for many will be tinged with sadness: some mourning the loss of loved ones and others grieving the hopes that failed to materialise and the dreams that fell short.

“In the spirit of Christmas, reflecting the best of Christ, let us all endeavour to extend the warm embrace of kindness to those around us who need it and let the multiple acts of kindness serve as a light that guides us into a happy and wonderful new year.

He further stated: “This year has been a time of transformation and relentless change in our country. And I am aware that the necessary reforms we are implementing to achieve a more prosperous, peaceful nation for all have imposed unique sacrifices.”

He said his administration would continue to implement palliative measures to ease the burden on the most vulnerable,  address current hardships and alleviate the suffering of all our nation’s people.

He added: “Fellow Nigerians, as we navigate this transition to stability, prosperity, and Renewed Hope, I urge you once more to hold fast and rest assured of my commitment to govern with vision, dedication, and empathy.

“Be confident that by the strength of our joint endeavour, we will shortly emerge into a new dawn of prosperity,  peace, and irreversible progress.

“As you celebrate this season, please spare a moment of remembrance and prayer for the men and women of our nation’s armed forces, bearing arms in our names and ensuring our safety. My God protect them and bring them back to their families.

“And let us together commemorate the memory of those who, in their service, have paid the highest price for our nation. May God bless their souls and comfort their families and loved ones.

“Let the light of Christmas guide our paths as we bring this year to a close and usher in the new year. I wish you all a merry Christmas.”

  • 2023: CONUA, Tinubu and Weah

    2023: CONUA, Tinubu and Weah

    By Kehinde Yusuf

As 2023 comes to an end, a fitting tribute is to highlight some of the representative inspirational events of the year. These include the registration of the Congress of University Academics (CONUA) as an alternative academic union in the Nigerian university system, the election of Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the electoral loss of Liberia’s President George Weah. These events evince courage, forbearance, focus, tenacity and resilience.

Leaving the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on 12 February, 2018 and forming a new association on the same day, was like taking on a mighty foe in the shape of the David and Goliath contest. While Goliath had all the appurtenances of war, the only thing David had was his sling and an unbending will. If forming CONUA was like a joke, seeking its registration was like a mirage. Members of the then-new union of lecturers were therefore derided by those who could not accurately gauge the depth of feelings underlying the heroic act. In fact, the formation of the union was regarded as a misadventure that would miscarry in the fullness of time. And cynical members of ASUU were reported to have said that those who formed CONUA would come back to ASUU, with their tails between their legs, to beg for forgiveness.

Indeed, there were dispiriting moments when it appeared as if all of the efforts invested in the formation of the union would be in vain and that the boat would hit a hard rock. It was at this point that the vitality and resilience of the human spirit were manifested. Sensing a weakening resolve by some members of CONUA at that time, some people flew the kite of reconciliation, which would have required folding up the union and returning to ASUU. And some members of CONUA did really chicken out. However, there was still a solid block of members who remained unshaken in their belief that the hope of reforming and truly democratising ASUU from within was delusional. Some also declared that, should CONUA fail to get registered, that would mean the end of their membership of any academic trade union for the rest of their career in the university system, since membership of a trade union was, in any case, voluntary.

On 21 September, 2022, the around four-and-a-half-year-long struggle, resilience, tenacity and focus of the members of CONUA were rewarded with  the formal notification, by the Ministry of Labour and Employment, of the qualification of the union for registration and the declaration of the intention of the Ministry to register it. On 13 January, 2023, to complete the registration process, a certificate of registration was issued to CONUA and another to the Nigerian Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA). However, before then, on 26 October, 2022, ASUU had challenged the registration of the two unions at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN). The union asked that the court declare the registration of CONUA and NAMDA illegal and, curiously, that the court order that the certificates of registration (issued to the unions on 13 January, 2023) be withdrawn. Note that at the time that ASUU was praying the court to withdraw the certificates, the certificates had actually not yet been issued. This raised the question, “Why did ASUU, a union with some of the most well-respected intellectuals and legal luminaries as members, demonstrate so much lack of attention to facts?”

In fact, the NICN judge declared as follows: “82. By these averments, the claimant [ASUU] put the date of the registration of the 3rd and 4th defendants [CONUA and NAMDA] as 4 October 2022. And in reliefs (3) and (4), the claimant put the registration of, and the issuing of certificate of registration to, the 3rd and 4th defendants, respectively by the 1st and 2nd defendants, as being on 4 October 2022. This, as will be shortly seen, is not correct and can be misleading.” In the 25 July, 2023 judgement of NICN, ASUU lost the case, on the basis of especially Article 2 of the International Labour Organisation Convention No. 87 which states: “Workers and employers, without distinction whatsoever, shall have the right to establish and, subject only to the rules of the organisation concerned, to join organisations of their own choosing without previous authorisation.” So, the registration of these two unions remains a major landmark of the tenure of Dr. Chris Ngige as Minister of Labour and Employment.

The inspirational import of the CONUA experience, in particular, is that, once you have identified a noble cause, pursue it single-mindedly with all your strength. And even when fatigued, trudge on. Providence may yet unlock a clue to success. And the forces of nature may aggregate to confer on the weary enablement. As a Yoruba proverb puts it, “Eni eégún n lé kó maa ró’jú bó se n re ará ayé ló se n re ará òrun.” (‘Let the person being chased by a masquerade persevere, because as human beings get tired, so do the extra-terrestrial beings chasing them.’) Today, CONUA is on its steady match forward, and just on 12 December, 2023, the Trade Union Congress announced its acceptance of the union as one of its new affiliates.

Even more robustly inspirational is the victory of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 25 February, 2023 presidential election in Nigeria. Brick by brick for around thirty years, Tinubu built the structure for his victory in the election, in the face of daunting challenges, and undeterred by unremitting attacks by widely-acknowledged pugilists and fearsome gladiators. And the attacks were comprehensive. They ranged from acerbic questions and claims about his parentage, his education, his financial affairs, his political life and his health. And the attackers were equally wide-ranging. They included false friends, treacherous associates, distant detractors, ethnic jingoists, religious bigots, fake prophets, delusional pollsters, self-demeaning lawyers, media hatchet persons, academics contemptuous of intellectual honesty and people who were just primed to go wherever the wind blew. In the face of the overwhelming attacks, he showed unimaginable stoicism and awesome adaptability. But he was human, after all, and the barrage of attacks was starting to take its toll and generate doubt.

The 30 October, 2022 issue of ThisDay reported Asiwaju as telling Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the Head of Afenifere, as follows in Akure:  “At a point, I doubted I could win APC presidential primary.” In another telling disclosure in the National Ecumenical Centre, Abuja, at a thanksgiving service on 28 May, 2023, a day to his swearing-in as President, his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, said: “I can tell you, on my own, that we never believed this could happen. But thank God for giving us hope, for giving us the resilience to continue in the race of life.” Moreover, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, as Director, Media and Publicity, Tinubu/Shettima Campaign, in an interview published in The Guardian of 28 May, 2023 remarked:  “[T]he campaign was almost derailed towards the end with the introduction of Naira swap and the fuel scarcity. The Naira swap, with currency shortage all over the country, was clearly aimed at him, to create deep resentment against the ruling APC. At a stage, he was so concerned about the plight of our people and he contemplated withdrawing from the race, so that Emefiele and his co-conspirators could give our people some respite.”

As his array of detractors remained implacable, Asiwaju received wondrous support from unexpected quarters. It seemed to have paid him handsomely to have lived by the Yoruba principle, “Nítorí egbìnrìn òtè la se n l’égbèrin òré; tí irinwó bá n bú’ní lo níwájú, irinwó á maa yinni bò léyìn.” (‘It is in preparation for conspiracy that we make eight hundred friends, so that when four hundred are moving ahead of us abusing us, four hundred would be coming behind us praising us.’) All in all, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu became a clear manifestation of Chapter 35, Verse 2, of the Qur’an which assures as follows: “Whatever Allah grants to people of mercy – none can withhold it; and whatever Allah withholds – none can release it thereafter.”

Liberia’s President George Weah’s political life has also been remarkably inspirational. A former slum dweller and high school dropout, the former international football star with no political experience, formed a political party, Congress for Democratic Change, just four months before the presidential elections of 2005. He contested against a Harvard-trained, former World Bank staff, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, and won the majority of votes, but did not score enough votes to avoid a re-run. In the re-run, he was declared as defeated by Johnson-Sirleaf. He alleged fraud, but later withdrew the charge, in the interest of peace. James Butty of Voice of America noted on 1 July, 2011: “During the 2005 presidential election, some of Weah’s critics said he was not fit to be president because he did not have a college degree.” Ostensibly to address this deficiency, the 12 August, 2010 issue of Fox Sports reported that “Weah received a high school diploma in 2007.” He also enrolled in Devry University in Florida, U.S.A., and earned a degree in Business Management in June 2011.

Thereafter, he joined the presidential race again in 2017, won, and demonstrated how irrepressible the human spirit could be. But history repeated itself, and in the 2023 election, he won the majority vote in the first ballot, but lost narrowly in the re-run. And this is where his credentials as a true democrat were reaffirmed. Before the result was officially announced, President Weah conceded defeat and congratulated the winning candidate. In his national broadcast of 17 November, 2023, he asked his followers to resume their normal duties “tomorrow”, and “plan for our return to political leadership in 2029”. Today, President George Weah has become a rare symbol of democracy in Africa. Fittingly, he was named “Democrat of the Year” by The Nation newspaper of 17 December, 2023. It is expected that ECOWAS and the African Union would give him due honour.

It took CONUA five years of unyielding desire for freedom to get registered. It took Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu around thirty years of careful planning and sharp focus to become President of Nigeria. And it took World-acknowledged football star George Weah twelve years of courage, self-assurance, tenacity and resilience to become President of Liberia. As the African-American Civil Rights campaigner Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. put it beautifully, poetically, always “keep moving”: “If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.” As 2023 ends, let those with a positive disposition keep hope alive, and let bitter souls obsessed with negativity start anew to see the cup as half-full rather than half-empty.

Yuletide: Excitement, commendation trail Tinubu’s transport subsidy

    By Segun Tomori

Nigerians from all walks of life are thrilled by the Presidential intervention mitigating the high cost of transport this festive season. Cross-country travelling to see loved ones at the end of the year has

been the norm for Nigerians, for decades, irrespective of religious inclinations. Therefore, the far[1]reaching effect of discounted inter-state bus fares and free train rides on the citizenry, cannot be overemphasised.

In announcing the Federal Government’s gesture last Wednesday, the chairman of the Yuletide transport subsidy inter-ministerial committee and Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake had revealed that from 21st December 2023 to 4th January, 2024, Nigerians will enjoy a 50% discount on inter-state bus transport along 22 major routes, while the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) will be offering free train rides within the same period, in what is now widely acclaimed as a novel, pro-masses initiative by any Federal Government in Nigeria’s history.

With a target of lifting 5 million commuters this season, government is partnering with major transport companies like Good is Good (GIG) motors, Chisco Transport, Young Shall Grow, God Bless Ezenwata and Area Motor. In view of high demand across the country, the routes have since been scaled up from 22 to 28 while citizens travelling from Lagos – Nigeria’s commercial hub, to other states like Akure and Ilorin via mini buses from the Oshodi bus interchange, are also beneficiaries.

It will be recalled that the attendant effect of fuel subsidy removal has led to skyrocketing transport fares which has necessitated palliatives from government to cushion its effect. Feedback from citizens across the country have indicated that this transport subsidy has the most significant impact, thus far.

Deborah, at the God is Good Motors (GIGM) Park in Ajah Lagos, captured the mood of passengers across the country. “I’m travelling from Ajah here in Lagos. I’m going to Benin and I just received my 50% discount palliative from the Federal Government (displaying her receipt), and I’m so excited.

Thank you so much, Mr. President! Ebele, travelling from Mararaba, Abuja aboard the GIGM bus to Edo state captured his excitement thus, “It’s a good feeling. I got the refund of 50% of my fares. I had

paid N36,800 initially but I got half of that back. This is a real palliative and I’m grateful to President Bola Tinubu.

Another commuter, Lucky travelling from Mararaba, Abuja to Owerri, Imo State had this to say, ” The original fare was N32,300 but on getting here, they said the President has given us a 50% discount and they refunded it back to me. I just received my own alert. Long live the President, Long live Nigeria!

Impact stories also abound from train commuters along the Lagos-Ibadan, Abuja-Kaduna routes. A twitter user @ayotem4real had tweeted, “Just got two free train tickets ( Lagos – Ibadan) for my son and mum. En route to the Babatunde Fashola station.Thank you, Mr. President”. A passenger aboard the Idu train station in Abuja to Kaduna revealed that “For those who have validated their names, it’s a smooth ride from the Idu train station in Abuja”.

Another elderly commuter aboard the Idu train station to Kaduna, showered encomiums on the President. ” Thank God, the President has offered this free ride to us from Abuja to Kaduna and for others across the country. The President is now trying but some are trying to sabotage the system.

They will not succeed. My prayer is that Nigeria will be better. When government is making efforts, it shall affect all Nigerians and I say thanks to government. They should keep it up”.

In just 48 hours since the commencement of the subsidised transport scheme, the implementation has been impressive across the country, it will only get better as the days progress. It should also be noted that after the holidays, Nigerians can take advantage of the discounted rates to return to their respective bases, on or before 4th January, 2024.

With this palliative that is touching lives, down to the grassroots, it is apparent that President Tinubu is deeply committed to the welfare of the people and working round the clock for their shared prosperity. An apt message can be deduced from this intervention – enjoy your holidays!

  • The many silver linings of Tinubu’s 7 months in office by Bayo Onanuga

The many silver linings of Tinubu’s 7 months in office by Bayo Onanuga

The removal of fuel subsidy and the move to merge foreign exchange rates, two headline reforms introduced by the Tinubu administration since late May, triggered problems such as high fuel prices and the depreciation of the Naira, two monstrosities which combined to cause a general spike in costs of services and goods.

Today, many Nigerians complain of a rise in the cost of living.

According to the latest NBS report, Nigeria’s inflation, which rose to 26.7 percent in September, again rose to 28.2% in November from 27.33% in October. Food Inflation remains untamed, rising from 31.52% in October to 32.84% in November 2023.

To compound the economic problems, a few multinational companies such as GlaxoSmithKline, Procter & Gamble have announced their exit from our country, complaining about the difficult operating environment and the scarcity of dollar.

The truth is that the new policies alone are not solely responsible for the economic problems we are facing today. We were destined for the tough and rough patch, where we are today because of the prevailing conditions before Tinubu took over on 29 May.

As at June 2023, the budget deficit was N10.8 trillion. Actual Debt service was 98.95 percent of revenue, far higher than the projected 59.37 percent.  Inflow into the country’s foreign reserve came in trickles. And so bad was the state of affairs that Nigeria could not remit about $800 million fund of foreign airlines. JP Morgan exposed our near insolvency by claiming in a report that our net foreign reserve was just about $3.7 billion, not the $33 billion-plus flaunted by Emefiele’s CBN.

President Tinubu, who promised during the campaign to take hard and difficult decisions, moved to tackle the economic problems from Day One, by first dispensing with the wasteful fuel subsidy that was billed to consume about N7trillion this year, five times more than what was provisioned for capital spending.

President Tinubu is quite aware of the side effects of his move to reset our economy. Though his administration has earned plaudits from the World Bank, the IMF and rating agencies such as Moody’s and Fitch, he is not carried away by the praises.

He is focused on turning the economy around for growth, development and prosperity.

The moves are yielding some good effects. Amidst what some sections of the media perceive as general gloom, some silver linings are emerging, signposting that with a little more patience, our material conditions will improve and inflation will be tamed. For businesses, operating conditions will also improve.

In its third-quarter report for the year, the NBS reported that GDP grew by 2.54 percent. In a similar period in 2022, GDP recorded a growth of 2.25%. To demonstrate that the sun may be shining on us again, the 2.54% GDP growth recorded in Q3, was also higher than the 2.51% recorded in Q2.

The service sector, made up of information and communication, financial, and insurance, was responsible for the growth witnessed in Q3. It had a 3.99% growth, contributing 52.7% of the aggregate GDP. The agriculture sector declined from 1.34% growth in Q2 to 1.3 percent in Q3.

Growth was also recorded in construction and real estate, metal ores (69.76%), coal mining (58.03%), chemical and pharmaceutical products (6.77%), Cement (4.2%), and construction (3.89%). Oil reported a negative growth of 0.85%, a major improvement from the negative 22.67% recorded at the same period last year. It was -13.43 in Q2 of 2022.

The improvement in the oil sector and its contribution to GDP has been attributed to the improvement in the security of oil infrastructure and operations, leading to increased production. Going forward in this Q4 and 2024, NNPC Limited is confident that the sector will continue to climb the curve.

In the same Q3, according to NBS, the Industrial sector grew by 0.46%, an uptick compared with Q3 2022, when it had a negative 8% growth, even in the era of P&G and GSK exit.

An interesting revelation in the NBS Q3 report was the big jump in the volume of trade, from N12.16 trillion in Q2 to N18.8 trillion. Trade volume in the same period in 2022 was N12.28 trillion. We also recorded a trade surplus of N1.89 trillion in Q3, an increase from the N708.8 billion in Q2 2023. In Q3 in 2022, we recorded a trade deficit of N409.39 billion.

The value of exports in the third quarter was N10.35 trillion, far higher by 60.78 percent than the N6.44 trillion posted in Q2 2023. Crude oil dominated the export, accounting for 82.5 percent, a confirmation that our country is pumping out more oil for export, unlike the previous years.

Just as our exports increased, imports also increased, rising from N5.73 trillion in Q2 2023 to N8.46 trillion in Q3, a rise of 60.8 percent. The imports recorded in the quarter were also higher in value compared to Q3 2022, which was N6.34 trillion.

As the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu noted in a recent report, economic prosperity in our country will be achieved with the reforms being implemented, supported by strong monetary and fiscal policies, food supply management, and other intervention programmes.

President Tinubu who has never shied away from acknowledging the temporary pains triggered by the reforms, gave an assurance in a recent newspaper interview that his Administration will continue to take proactive measures to wrestle with the problems.

Many of these measures are already being taken and in the New Year, we expect the silver linings that are at present understated, to blossom into rays of sunshine to be experienced by all Nigerians.
