Tinubu: I’m in forefront of changing Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that he is at the forefront of changing the country for the better.

The president also said that his administration had brought some positive changes in the Southeast, south-south, northeast, and northwest in the areas of security and the economy.

The president, who spoke in Enugu while commissioning the ultramodern Enugu Zonal Command Complex of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday, December 19, declared that while things were changing in Nigeria for the better in the past six months, 2024 would manifest the fullness of his administration’s many reforms.

Represented by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, President Tinubu saluted the armed forces of Nigeria, the military, the security forces, the police, the SSS and the rest for the good work they were currently doing in the country.

Ribadu said: “First, I’m bringing the greetings of Mr President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He said I should congratulate you and your team. Thank you for the good work you are doing.

He said that I should thank the armed forces of Nigeria, the military, the security forces, the police, the SSS, and the rest for the good work you are doing in our country today.

“Everyone will agree with me that things are changing. In just the first six months of his own administration, we are beginning to see what is possible. We want to also encourage you, to go this direction. We need our country to work. We need things to improve. We want to do the right things. And he (Mr President) is in the forefront of doing that. Things are changing in Nigeria. In 2024, wait and see what is going to happen.

“It is important that law enforcement agencies which are critical to our collective safety, security, prosperity, and general well-being, are afforded necessary facilities to ensure their welfare and efficiency. This is why I commend the chairman of the EFCC and his team for this initiative.

“I’m confident that the state-of-the-art facility will further motivate the staff to rededicate themselves to the course of fighting economic and financial crimes, emerging challenges hindering our development as a nation.”

He said the decision to prioritize the welfare of the personnel of the zone and indeed, all EFCC staff with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Tinubu administration, was in line with what President Tinubu was trying to do for all Nigerians, the ability for all to have better things.

He further stated: “Support workers, give them what is needed, make the environment okay so that we can get maximum out of all that are involved and participating in the Renewed Hope. Issues of welfare, in particular, are important to law enforcement officers who stake their comfort and oftentimes, their safety and lives for our own well-being.

“I want to assure you that this administration will not compromise when it comes to looking after your welfare.

“All we ask in return is a total commitment to the mandate of your agency. Beyond your regular activities of fighting various forms of fraud, I want to remind you that the EFCC is strategic to the counter-terrorism efforts of this Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

“It is my fervent hope that the commission will take a front row in the determined efforts to check the laundering of proceeds of violent crimes such as kidnapping, banditry and terrorism in our country and restore order and stability, particularly in the economy.

“You have the biggest responsibility to be in the forefront and get things back in order. A lot of things were done wrongly and mismanaged. It is you, EFCC, who should clean up and sanitize, do the right thing, and demonstrate that you are one of our best. Be honest, be just and be fair to all. That is what is needed. That is what you are known for.

“Things were done not necessarily in the best way that was expected. But now, it is your own duty and responsibility. Change it.

“Though I’m aware of the modest contributions of the commission in checking illicit financial flows, especially in the designated non-financial sector through the Special Control Unit Agency against money laundering, there is still potential for improvement.”

He also emphasised the need for synergy and collaboration among various security agencies, saying, “No agency can do it alone without the support and collaboration of others. I therefore call on other security organizations in this zone to work with the EFCC to ensure it achieves its objectives.

“Under my watch as the NSA, unbridled rivalry among various security agencies will not be tolerated”.

He expressed happiness over the improved collaboration among various security agencies at the national level, saying the new direction had proved to be more valuable.

“Though we do not talk too much, things are changing. The Southeast is changing. The south-south is changing. The same with the northeast and northwest. We’re defeating Boko Haram. We’re defeating bandits. We’re engaging our brothers (agitators) who are in this part of the country to plead that we are all together and we are one.

“That is happening simply because all of us are together in this. Unlike what happened in the past. I’m emphasizing this simply because it makes a massive difference.”

While congratulating the personnel of the commission in the Enugu Zonal Command, Ribadu urged them to make good use of the facility by playing a big role in changing Nigeria.

The executive chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukayode recalled the fire incident that destroyed one of the offices at the Enugu command, saying however that the commission had not only put the sad incident behind but moved on.

While emphasizing the importance of a befitting office to carry out their mandate, Olukayode vowed that the EFCC would ensure that fraudsters have no place to operate in the Southeast and other regions of the country.

According to him, families that have been victims of fraud will wipe their tears away following the commission’s onslaught against corruption and fraud.

    • •‘Treat Niger Delta with better care’

With a warning that non-performance will not be tolerated, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday inaugurated the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited Board.

He charged the Chief Pius Akinyelure-led board to set out to work immediately, warning members to distance themselves from conducts suggesting a sense of entitlement.

The president told members that their Board could be dissolved without notice over non-performance.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, quoted the President as saying: “The challenge is corporate governance. Yes, we will improve the security situation. We are working very hard. Sincerely, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mele Kyari, is doing very well, and doing all that I know.

“But you could be suddenly dissolved if there is no sustained excellence in performance. It is my honour to inaugurate this Board, which has people of great integrity. I am honoured that we are doing this. I recognize all of you.’’

The President Tinubu said corporate social responsibility for the Niger Delta must be taken seriously, considering the devastating effects of oil exploration and exploitation on the environment.

“Niger Delta must be seen as the goose that lays the golden egg, and we must treat that region with the deserved respect and care. It is not asking for too much to ensure quality and constant water supply, schools, medical facilities and roads.

“It is not about us. It is about the well-being of the entire country and the lifeblood of the nation. We should care more about the environment. We will do more for security to minimize stealing and vandalism.”

The President directed them to focus more on gas as Nigeria transits to cleaner energy.

He said: “We need to show that we are committed to the welfare of our country. Take a look at the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) and know what the pitfalls are. The cabinet members and the Board should decide what we can do differently for production increase, profitability and governance. It is in your hands. I will work with you.” Board Chairman (Akinyelure) commended the President for the removal of petrol subsidy, noting that the nation would have drowned in debt, but for his decisiveness.

“Our focus is to increase production. We must address the problem of stealing and pipeline vandalism in the Niger Delta. We are aware of the efforts in the past, but we will do more,’’ he said.

Nigeria remains top-level destination for onshore/offshore investments — Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has again assured the international investment community that his administration would ensure that Nigeria remains a top-level destination for offshore and onshore investments.

President Tinubu spoke on Monday when he received the Group Chairman and CEO of Total Energies Worldwide, Mr. Patrick Pouyanne, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the President reiterated the federal government’s commitment to remove all anti-investment impediments in the country.

“We are committed to removing all cobwebs and anti-investment impediments in the oil and gas industry. We have a clear path that we are committed to pursuing. We are ready to work with you,” President Tinubu said.

He commended Total Energies for its years of exploration and investment in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, citing the feat as evidence of the company’s commitment and confidence in Nigeria.

President Tinubu assured the delegation that his administration was determined to improve the investment climate in Nigeria, emphasizing that the aim of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) is to create a favourable investment and work environment.

He affirmed his administration’s commitment to making the necessary efforts for industrial peace, harmony, and development.

“The moment I took over, there was a clear path that we set out to pursue, and we will ensure that Nigeria remains a top-level investment choice in the dynamics of the offshore and onshore sectors.

“We will review troublesome areas, fiscally and otherwise, to incentivize gas production in the age of transition to cleaner energy. We are ready to make a difference as a government. The good handshake that we have is for partnership and to accelerate and incentivize gas production in pursuit of the energy transition,” he said.

Patrick Pouyanne, the Global CEO of Total Energies Worldwide, informed President Tinubu that Nigeria was “very important” for Total Energies, accounting for 8 to 10 percent of the company’s worldwide total production and over 18 percent of its global investment.

“Mr. President, we are ready to invest $6 billion in the coming years. We are looking extensively at more deepwater production and gas production opportunities across the terrain.

“We welcome your policies and your personal commitment to ensuring that all required fiscal incentives are provided while security issues are tackled. Everything is here. We just need to conclude with the tweaks and changes necessary to unlock the outstanding potential in both oil and gas,” the Total Energies Worldwide Group Chairman stated.

Pouyanne also highlighted the company’s commitment to maintaining its zero-flaring position in Nigeria to both heal the environment and monetize all available gas resources in support of Nigeria’s Energy Transition Plan.

High transportation cost: FG’ll grant waivers to air, road, rail transport operators — Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu on Monday, December 18, said the federal government is taking measures to alleviate the high cost of transportation by granting waivers to operators in the air, road, and rail transportation systems.

President Tinubu gave the assurance during a meeting with members of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN), who paid him a visit at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, the consideration was as a result of the challenges faced by travellers during the festive season.

He also said steps are being taken to reduce the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

He said: ”I care about what is going on in the country. I thank you for your support and opinions, even the criticism of our government. Without the support of some of you, I will not be standing here as president.

“You have held our feet to the fire, and we will continue to respect your opinions whether we agree or not. One thing I must say is that I read every paper, various opinions, and columnists.”

President Tinubu said his administration will remain steadfast in “reinvigorating, retooling and re-engineering the economy,” citing bold decisions by his administration to end the petrol subsidy regime and initiate the ongoing unification of foreign exchange rates.

”I promise you a very transparent government. We will try our best to draw water from a dry well and create a good economic environment that will serve the people.

“The future of our country is clear with committed investments in health, infrastructure, transportation, and education, among others. We have to take care of the poor. If we invest in our own children and leave the children of the poor, the children of neglect will attack your investments,” he said.

President Tinubu assured NPAN that his administration will always uphold media freedom and respect opinions, whether they are adversarial or complimentary to his government.

He assured the body’s members that he would carefully consider their request for a review of policies affecting the paper industry, acknowledging concerns about existing regulations hindering local access to newsprint.

In his remarks, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, reiterated the federal government’s commitment to fostering a vibrant and responsible media landscape in the country.

”Our democracy thrives on the principles of transparency, accountability, and the free flow of information. The role of the media, particularly the newspapers, is paramount in upholding these principles,” the Minister said.

Commending NPAN for providing a platform for national discourse and for diverse voices, the Minister implored the association to collaborate with the Tinubu administration through effective dialogue, advancing shared values, and addressing challenges confronting the nation.

Mr. Kabiru Yusuf, NPAN president and chairman of Media Trust, owners of the Daily Trust Newspapers and Trust Television, while congratulating President Tinubu on his election victory and Supreme Court affirmation, raised pressing concerns facing the newspaper industry.

”Our particular concern is the newspaper industry, which employs thousands of Nigerians: journalists, marketers, distributors, administrators, accountants. Newspapers are also part of the building blocks of democracy and reliable sources of information in a world that is overwhelmed by fake news,” he said.

  • Tinubu should appoint next minister from Plateau Central

Tinubu should appoint next minister from Plateau Central

Former House of Representatives member, Alphonsus Komsol (APC-Plateau Shendam, Quaan-Pan, Mikang Constituency), has urged President Bola Tinubu to appoint a new minister from the Plateau Central Senatorial one in the spirit of equity.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain made the call in an open letter to the President. He said his suggestion was informed by the urgent need for the President to address diverse issues in Plateau that border on inclusiveness, geopolitics, ethnic balance, equity and fairness.

Komsol, who was the Secretary, Presidential Campaign Council’s (PCC) Contact and Mobilisation Committee, North-Central Zone; Plateau Coordinator, Independent Campaign Council for Asiwaju and Member, APC’s Election Planning and Strategic Committee, said such a decision would determine APC’s success in Plateau.

He said: “Your Excellency, I would like to suggest in all honesty and with all sincerity of purpose and intention, that you should do everything possible to ensure that you appoint next minister from the Plateau Central Senatorial Zone.

“The reason for my selfless suggestion is not far-fetched: It is noteworthy that Simon Lalong is from Plateau South Senatorial Zone, which has produced six ministers since 1999, namely Pauline Tallen (twice), Fidelis Tapgun and his sister, Josephine Tapgun, Solomon Dalung and, lately, Lalong.

“However, Plateau Central Senatorial Zone has produced just 1 minister (Bagudu Hirse) since 1999. Paradoxically, this is a zone that usually returns some of the highest votes for the APC in virtually all elections since the formation of our party about 10 years ago!”

The former lawmaker noted that the marginalized Central Zone has some of the major financiers and biggest founding fathers of the APC, who are also the President’s die-hard political supporters and best hands, who the ministerial cap perfectly fits.

He noted that, like Plateau South, Plateau North has produced 5 ministers since 1999: Damishi Sango, Mark Aku, Musa Izam, Dasuki Nakande and Sarah Ochekpe, who were picked from different ethnic groups within the senatorial zone.

“Your Excellency, I write to you with a deep sense of both passion and compassion, driven by pure patriotism, with a good intent for our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), your government, Plateau State and Nigeria at large.

“This is especially against the backdrop of your glaring strong will in governance, which has so far in record time, engendered notable reforms across all sectors, including infrastructure and human resource development.

“To this end, Mr President, I emphatically and unequivocally implore you to please kindly do the needful, do your utmost and do justice to the raging controversy over the next ministerial slot for Plateau State by giving it to Plateau Central Senatorial Zone.”

The former lawmaker added that giving the next Plateau ministerial slot to the marginalized central zone would go a long way to strengthen the party and avoid any likely political implosion that could arise, if it is done otherwise.

He lauded President Tinubu for having an ingenuous way of identifying his die-hard political loyalists and rewarding them, as well as having an uncanny ability to mobilise the best minds and strengthen alliances across the country for the common good.

“You will agree with me that being the President of a country like Nigeria takes a lot of courage and gut, which you must display by listening to the voice of the people.

“How you deal with diverse issues that border on geopolitics, ethnic balance, equity, and fairness, by carrying everyone along, will determine how far you, our party and your government can succeed, going forward,” the APC chieftain added.

It would be recalled that the Court of Appeal in a controversial judgment recently declared Lalong winner of Plateau South Senatorial Zone, culminating in his resignation last Wednesday to go to the Senate.

However, it was gathered that the former governor had, prior to his resignation, submitted the names of two of his kinsmen from Shendam for one of them to be appointed as a minister to replace him.

Lalong’s decision had stirred the hornets nest, triggered a tidal wave of resistance and made him to lock horns with Plateau APC stakeholders like his political protégé, Rep Yusuf Gagdi from the central zone, among others.

United States of America (USA) green energy initiative, the Sustainable Energy for Developing Nations Initiative (SEDNI), has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding for the Nigeria Police Green Initiative (NPGI).

It is aimed at engaging green innovative solution to boost the operational efficiency and capacity of the Nigeria Police to fight crime and maintain law and order in Nigeria.

SEDNI, based in Houston Texas, USA, in a statement by its President, Mr. Isaac ThankGod, an engineer; described the Nigeria Police initiative as commendable, saying it should be emulated by other African countries and all developing nations.

SEDNI said despite the challenging nature of providing security in a country like Nigeria, the initiative would open up the minds of the populace and highlight certain socio-economic factors for effective policing and crime reduction, environmental sustainability, climate change, as well as supporting the lives and livelihoods of the members of the police and their families.

The group pointed out that besides encouraging a more civil-police relationship, the ‘Nigeria Police Emission Reduction Programme’ policy would also alleviate the living standard of the men and personnel of the Nigeria Police.

SEDNI said the initiative would include becoming sources of solar lighting across the police stations, police colleges, police barracks, police outposts and communities in alignment with the transition to low-carbon climate-resilient development.

The group said: “The programme will encourage transitioning to energy efficient vehicles and gas conversion vehicles, thus reducing premium motor spirit (PMS) consumption and air pollution, while increasing efficiency and promoting a healthier lifestyle among police personnel and the community.

“The initiative will also leverage environmentally-sustainable waste and water management, including solar boreholes and waste-to-energy programmes, thereby reducing operational costs, creating jobs and a cleaner environment.

“The NPF is also going beyond our immediate environment by lighting up communities with solar power to reduce security vulnerability and herder-farmer crisis, conducting outreach programmes to educate citizens on the importance of preserving natural resources, reducing pollution and engaging in sustainable practices, thereby effectively managing scarce natural resource-induced conflicts such as the herder-farmer conflicts.”

SEDNI also agreed that the Nigeria Police is leading by example by recognising the need for government agencies and the private sector to take proactive measures in aligning climate action with law enforcement and security issues.

The organisation further said: “The SEDNI welcomes the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun’s commendation and assurance to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) and other COP-28 participants that Nigeria will rank among the nations where government institutions will lead by example on climate change initiatives.

“The Nigeria Police Green Initiative (NPGI) is a testament to the determination of the Nigeria Police Force to add tremendous value to the Federal Government, while performing its core law enforcement responsibilities.”

  • Renewing the hope of Nigerians

    Renewing the hope of Nigerians

    By Goodluck F.T. Uguoji

SIR: Nigerians have not always been like this. They were once vibrant people given to conviviality. They were too trusting. If you promised them heaven, they took you for your words. They expected you would deliver heaven on their laps. Whoever said Nigerians are difficult to govern do not know Nigerians well. They are patient and are long-suffering. They know how to give leadership a chance. Since independence, Nigerians have had to listen to all comers and they gave the all comers all the chance they needed to move mountains. They were told to trust, they trusted. Support, they supported. Follow, they followed – often unthinking and unquestioning.

What did they get? Their trust was abused, their innocence desecrated, their hopes and aspirations smashed and their vision of a greater tomorrow and a greater nation brutalized and bloodied.

From the First Republic through 13 years of military rule to the Second Republic and then back to military rule, the aborted Third Republic and now the Fourth Republic, leadership either in agbada or in khaki made thundering promises. Nigerians listened to such promises patiently and willingly; they became adept listeners until their eardrums were shattered by the din of the broken promises.

Read Also: Kano: No deal with NNPP to compromise Supreme Court judgement, APC dispel rumour

Today, they do not hear and they do not want to hear even if they listen. In any case, they do not want to believe. They believed before but where did it land them?

For Nigerians, there is nothing on the horizon to indicate that the year 2024 we are waiting to usher in would be any different. Nigerians entered 2023 with trepidation. Nigerians in that frightful frame of mind were not ready for another round of promises but action. People seem to have lost all hope. Despair replaced optimism. They have not forgotten the horrors of the past eight years when their plights were not assuaged, and smiles were not enough. Their confidence has begun to wane dangerously and even the current president was forced to acknowledge this development and he promised to do something to regain their confidence.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has a chance to penetrate and deliver the people from their abject conditions. He has a chance to do great things with the 2024 budget and go down as a great leader. Only good leadership and good governance can breed committed and highly patriotic citizens. More exhortations and symbols cannot do it. What will do it is a determined and deliberate effort on the part of the government.
