Tinubu urges Nigerians abroad to return home

President Bola Tinubu has advised Nigerians in the United States to rise beyond failure by adopting a new mentality for success in all aspects of life.

Tinubu made the remarks during a Presidential Town Hall Meeting with Nigerians in the Diaspora in New York on Wednesday, September 20.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Townhall Meeting was organised by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) on the sidelines of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.

He said: “I want to give you a measure that will resonate with you. I was once a diaspora. What you have been through, I have been through it. Change of mindset is necessary.

“Take it this night that Nigeria is home for business opportunities.

“Also, anywhere you stay, there is always going to be an opportunity in, and in everything you do, there is always going to be an opportunity, if you know how to search and put your mind into it,’’ he said.

The president also expressed satisfaction with the behaviour of Nigerians who have continued to flourish in their chosen sectors in their host nation.

He added: “You are lucky to be among those who are celebrated for good manners and behavior and are operating in an acceptable manner.

“I’m very proud of you; I have also been beneficial of inspiration, determination, commitment and perseverance and that is all you need  to get through.

“But, we need you back home, Nigeria has arrived; forget the frustration of the previous year’s leadership,’’ he said.

Tinubu, who praised the efforts to educate out-of-school children, the healthcare programme, and the need to reduce poverty, stated that Nigeria is a blessed nation.

He added: “Sincerely, we don’t have any reason to be poor, we are just poor in some leadership areas.

“That is what I harped on during my campaign. It was a very gruesome campaign but I won the election but if I didn’t throw myself into it with strong determination and result, I wouldn’t have won.

“There were so many hurdles on my way that would have stopped me. I refuse to be stopped, you can do the same as many of you here that are contesting elections.”

In addition, he urged the Nigerians to embrace one another, urging that there should not be no sentiment and discrimination among them.

The president said: “You ought to embrace one another. No labeling, no identity, you should remove ethnic identify that tend to differentiate us.

“We are one single family, living in the same house but living in different rooms.”

‘Tinubu has opportunity to change economic situation’

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has the opportunity to change the country’s  current economic situation  and bring Nigerians out of poverty, President and Founder of Guardians of the Nation International (GOTNI) President  Linus Okorie said yesterday.

Okorie, who urged the president to invest in youth development, said Nigeria needed huge investment in youth leadership development.

He stated this during a boot campaign meeting organised by Impact Driven Young Leaders Initiative (IDL) in Abuja

Okorie stated that Nigerians are dissatisfied with the current situation of the country but President Tinubu has the choice to reinvent the wheel for a positive change.

He noted that Tinubu has the opportunity to be in the good books of history of the country and grow the economy by taking the path of uplifting people out of poverty.

He stressed that people have suffered in Nigeria because in most cases some leaders who don’t have the compassion and empathy to serve the society have gained access to power and as such, Nigeria needed a huge investment in youth leadership development.

Okorie said: “Nigeria needs huge investment in youth leadership development. Leadership development is a must for national transformation, you can’t build a nation until you have built the people and one of the ways to do this is leadership development competencies which is critical in investing in the way people think.

“Our nation is the only thing we have right now. Nations of the world that have made progress are nations that have invested heavily in the leadership development of young people. No nation can grow until young are taught the importance of active citizenship; of serving the course of good governance and helping to ensure that whatever sector they are playing in they can maintain the honour of becoming a citizen that is respectable and adding values to the communities and system.”

Executive Director, Impact Driven Young Leaders Initiative, Ovo Otarigho stated that the boot camp was organised to groom young people who believe that Nigeria’s numerous challenges can be solved with their involvement without confrontations.

He said: “We want to grow young people who are active to see that an active citizen does not throw confrontation with the government. We are building people to confront societal problems and engage with government institutions to solve these problems.”

Otarigbo added that for the values of democracy to be enshrined in the people, young people with an active mindset must be fully engaged in its course with prerequisite knowledge not to confront the government but work as partners to solve or manage the challenges.

  • U.S. court okays release of Tinubu’s academic records to Atiku

U.S. court okays release of Tinubu’s academic records to Atiku

United States District Court in Illinois yesterday directed Chicago State University to release President Bola Tinubu’s academic records to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Magistrate Judge Jeffrey Gilbert directed the varsity to provide “all relevant and non-privileged documents” to Atiku within two days.

The order followed an August 2 application filed by the former vice president requesting for the academic documents of Tinubu from his alma mater.

They are: “True and correct copies of (1) an exemplar of a Chicago State University diploma issued to President Tinubu in 1979; (2) Intervenor’s diploma issued in 1979; (3) any exemplar of a Chicago State University diploma that “contains the same font, seal, signatures, and wording as contained in Exhibit C to the First Liu Declaration, which purports to be a CSU diploma issued to Mr. Tinubu on or about June 22, 1979;” and (4) the CSU documents that were certified and produced by Jamar Orr (an associate general counsel at CSU) as well as communications relating to these documents.”

But, acknowledging Tinubu’s lawyers’ argument against lifting their client’s privacy privilege, the judge clarified in his ruling that only “non-privileged documents” should be produced by the Chicago State University.

The varsity in its deposition before the court has consistently confirmed that Tinubu attended the school  and graduated in 1979.

The U.S. court said: “For all of the reasons discussed above, Atiku Abubakar’s application, pursuant to 28 U.S.C. § 1782 for an Order Directing Discovery from Chicago State University for Use in a Foreign Proceeding [ECF No. 1] is granted. Respondent CSU shall produce all relevant and non-privileged documents in response to Requests for Production.

Atiku had told the U.S. court that he wanted to authenticate the documents whether a “Chicago State University diploma in the name of Bola Ahmed Tinubu dated June 22, 1979, that was submitted to the INEC before the Nigerian presidential election in February 2023 is genuine or was forged.”

He told the court that he intended to present same at the Supreme Court in Nigeria as part of his appeal to quash Tinubu’s victory.

But one of Tinubu’s lawyers in Nigeria, Mr. Babatunde Ogala (SAN), described Atiku’s U.S. case as a waste of time and an exercise in futility.

Ogala said the politician did not come clean in his application to the court.

The SAN explained that Tinubu’s academic records that  showed that he performed excellently at the Chicago State University, were already in the public domain.

“There is nothing new in the verdict,” Ogala said yesterday.

On September 16, the Chicago State University furnished the U.S. court with Tinubu’s academic records as an Accounting student at the Chicago State University

The transcript showed Tinubu recording As in many of the courses he took.

Ogala said: “There’s nothing new in the ruling. The academic records of Tinubu are in the public domain already. You can Google it and see.

“While in school, he was a brilliant student. The records available online contain his grades. The former Vice President lied to the U.S. court that he needed the records to prosecute his case in Nigeria.”

He noted that this was not part of Atiku’s case in his challenge to Tinubu’s presidential victory at the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) in Nigeria.

On September 6, a five-member panel of the PEPC dismissed Atiku’s petition, challenging Tinubu’s election. It also dismissed that of the Labour Party (LP), its candidate at the February 25 poll, Peter Obi and that of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

The five-member court held that Atiku and Obi failed to prove the allegations of electoral fraud against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Tinubu.

Dissatisfied with the PEPC verdict, Atiku and Obi and their parties filed appeals at the Supreme Court.

Ogunsanwo, Agbakoba, others score Tinubu’s UNGA speech high

President Bola Tinubu’s inaugural speech at the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session has been praised by eminent Nigerians, including Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and  Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs,  Olukunle Gbamgbose.

The others were   Nigeria’s  former  High Commissioner to Belgium  Alaba Ogunsanwo; ex- High Commissioner to Ghana, Michael Abikoye;   former Nigerian Bar Association(NBA) President  Olisa Agbakoba (SAN); Director-General, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) Eghosa Osaghae; and  NIIA’s  Acting Director of Research and Studies, Efem   Ubi

They said yesterday that it was worthy of note that Tinubu’s statement touched on issues of economic development, security, climate change, energy, poverty, sustenance of democracy in Africa and how to accelerate global prosperity through shared efforts.

According to them, in the history of UNGA, no   President who spoke for  Africa ever asserted that Africans were not beggars but equal partners in global relationships.

While  Sanwo-Olu noted that the speech affirmed democracy as the best form of government, Gbamgbose said the President’s performance at the global event showed that a new Sheriff had emerged in Africa.

The governor told reporters in New York that it was gladdening that the President proffered a solution to coups in some parts of Africa.

He said: “It (speech) set the tone for Nigeria to stake its own space in a global arena like in the United Nations, but also be able to project that, yes, everything is not perfect with us here but we are on a path of economic recovery.

“We are on the path of ensuring that the renaissance of Africa is not lost and that the world should be able to carry Africa along and let us, indeed, give Africa its fair share, its fair place in global politics and in the economic agenda of the world.

“He was also able to analyse the issues concerning Africa, West Africa and Nigeria.

“I believe, being his first outing, he demonstrated that Nigerians have actually chosen well, to be present at this point in time.

“He  (Tinubu) was not only defining what the role Nigeria will play, but was also putting Africa on the world map in expressing that even with global challenges, that the entire world needs to be able to listen and watch the opportunities that abound in Africa,”

“I believe it was a very credible outing for him.”

In a statement by the Foreign Affairs ministry, Ambassador  Gbamgbose said the speech by the President was powerful and incisive.

He said: The speech is very comprehensive and pan-African in nature. He spoke like the President of Africa. His statement tried to put Africa on the same pedestal as the developed countries. The idea for them to see African countries as development partners rather than underdogs was very much underscored in his statement. I have no doubt that the statement was well received. Definitely, a new Sheriff is in town.”

Also,  Ogunsanwo, a professor of  International Relations,  said he was sure the President felt elated by his performance at the global event.

His words: “President Tinubu’s speech was very well written. Kudos to Nigeria’s Mission to the United Nations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidency for putting together a commendable statement.

“Of course, such a speech must reflect the general direction the President wished to go and some specific points and issues he considered important. All those were taken care of in the speech.  I am sure the President  felt  satisfied with the outing.”

“Africa has only itself to blame if it fails to build upon the significant policy speech delivered by President Tinubu at the United Nations General Assembly.”

Ambassador  Abikoye gave a thumb up to the President for the big brother role by delivering a well-received speech on behalf of Africa.

He said, “I went through the speech line by line. It was a well-written speech and well-delivered. It brought out all the issues that concern Nigeria from climate change to the rest.

The president’s Big Brother role was also endearing. The speech was well delivered and also well received.”

Prof. Osaghae of the NIIA noted that the speech addressed all the important issues that are of concern to Nigeria. He listed the issues as economic development, economic growth, security, climate change, energy, poverty, and how to accelerate global prosperity through shared efforts.

His words: “I think it had a very strong message to two areas. First, the President extended the frontiers of Nigeria’s interests to West Africa and Africa and therefore demonstrated a high level of Nigeria’s efficacy as a leader of the Global South.

“Secondly, the points highlighted by the President resonated well with the speeches by other African Global South leaders, particularly the address by President Cyril Ramaphosa, and he could see that there’s a Global South voice. It is at the vanguard of saying we need to reform the present global order. “

Ubi also noted that the President’s speech touched on everything that is affecting not just Nigeria but Africa as a whole.

He said: “I like the speech very much, especially where he talked about the economic problems challenging Africa with regards to the lack of equity, parity and equality in international economic relations.

“The speech is a  great one when you compare it to those of other leaders.

“I can say that our speech has a great focus and he hit the nail on the head.”

He said he was labelled as a Judas, while others accused him of betraying the lgbo.

Idimogu added that today, President Tinubu’s performance in his first 100 days in office has vindicated him and his followers.

He said the President would make Nigeria a safe haven for investors and tourists, as he was taking giant steps in restoring the country’s lost glory, thereby making it a land of great opportunities.

Idimogu, in an interview with reporters, urged Nigerians to support President Tinubu, noting that he would perform well because he saw him as someone who had the experience and was ready to put in his best to ensure success.

He said: “President Tinubu has the political wing to move the country forward. Among the three leading candidates in the last presidential election, namely Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar and Tinubu, Asiwaju Tinubu is the best.”

Idimogu said he is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), hence there is no way he can get involved in anti-party activities.

On the attack on his home on the election day, he said: “It’s my people that attacked me, saying why I’m I dying for Asiwaju Tinubu, who is a Yoruba man, instead of my own brother.
