  • Tinubu icon of Nigeria’s contemporary politics, says Lalong

Plateau Governor Simon Lalong has described former Lagos State Governor and National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Bola Tinubu, as ‘the architect and icon of Nigeria’s contemporary politics.”

Lalong said this in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mark Longyen, on Thursday in Jos, to felicitate with Tinubu on his 67th birthday.

He further described Tinubu as “a dogged and uncompromising fighter for democracy.”

“You had over the years carved a niche for himself as a dogged and uncompromising fighter for democracy, justice, honesty, fairness, equity and equality.

“You have become the indisputable, indefatigable architect and icon of contemporary Nigerian politics and a mentor to countless politicians today,” he said.

“Your 67th birthday anniversary presents an opportunity for me to join your numerous admirers nationwide and globally to felicitate with you.

“We thank God for the six decades plus seven years of an impactful, fulfilled and fruitful life that you have lived to date,” he said.

Lalong added that the former Lagos governor’s service to the nation is a source of pride to those who know him and even those who do not.

He emphasised that Tinubu’s political partnership particularly with President Muhammadu Buhari, is bringing Nigeria out of the economic woods.

According to him, the partnership is steadily restoring Nigeria’s image as a respectable country of preferred destination in the international community.

“On behalf of the government, the good people of Plateau State and the APC Family in the state, I congratulate you on this auspicious occasion of your birthday anniversary.

“I wish you many more years in good health, strength and wisdom and may the Almighty God expand your coast like never before.”

  • Tinubu as reactionaries’ nightmare

‘To be great is to be misunderstood.’—Ralph Waldo Emerson in: Self Reliance & Other Essays.

There is an invigorating conundrum that many politicians currently in and out of power across the country have found a hard row to hoe. That riddle is Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu – the Jagaban of Borgu land, Asiwaju of black man’s continent and former governor of Lagos State, the centre of excellence. Tomorrow, March 29th, the enigma adds another year. Despite his being misunderstood by fickle minded reactionaries, his greatness continues to soar, limitlessly. The reality- Jagaban continues to wax stronger within the nation’s political firmament. Expectedly so, this is because he remains an astute political strategist and an unfaltering torchbearer of true progressive politics.

Without sounding immodest, the reality today is that he remains the most-sought-after politician and perhaps, one of the few, if not, the most noteworthy of the progressive hue in modern-day Nigeria. At a point in the history of this country, the late sage, Pa Obafemi Awolowo, was the issue. Even after the great man’s death 32 years ago, most politicians in the southwestern part of the country still use his name to cuckold the electorate during electioneering season. Momentarily, Bashorun MKO Abiola appeared on the political horizon, but his attempted reign was short-lived by the feudal military oligarchy that denied him his electoral mandate by sending him into a contrived grave. Most politicians in contemporary Nigeria deploy the Tinubu political brand name to win grassroots support during election campaign period. Whether in the north, east or south, the touted Tinubu support for any political candidate is a big endorsement for realising political dreams. For those that show contempt for the brand name, they remain consigned to the limbo of political abyss. For sure, Asiwaju has become such a significant issue in the nation’s political firmament that a mere mention of his name amongst friends and even political foes sends a soul riveting impact.

Since the passage of Awo and, perhaps Abiola, one doubts if there is any Nigerian that has taken the political emancipation of his people from the yoke of democratic tyranny and bottom-top governance seriously as much as Tinubu has been doing. The political ignoramuses might deride him; the grovelers of centrist conservative elements and the reactionaries in our midst are used to impugning his character, but that is the man still standing like the rock of Gibraltar. Asiwaju has the uncanny power of political liberation; he is imbued with an unusual economic skill, being a shrewd accountant with vast international and public service experience. This man of indefinable propensity for philanthropy has this creepy nerve for discerning a talent. This was reflected in the membership quality of his mostly well-endowed cabinet team that he assembled during his eight-year rein as governor of Lagos State. Asiwaju’s gift of seeing greatness in others when such people never give greatness a thought and guiding them to enviable heights is legendary.

The man adds another year tomorrow, but many people prefer to criticise him, out of sheer envy of his result oriented political track record; others do simply because they could not rival his steadfast commitment to finding solutions to political and other challenges facing the country. Tinubu thinks Nigeria, dreams Nigeria; he lives Nigeria and sleeps Nigeria. From the north, east, west and south, people call him at random to seek his help or input on intractable political quagmire. These men and women are not necessarily members of the political elite class; this is because the former governor is also at home with the downtrodden whose interests form the thrust of his concern for a better country.

The reactionaries, out of steep spite of his large-heart and enormous goodwill, will query his source of wealth: And simply because the man is doing what they cannot ever do or are not privileged to do since they are not in a position to do it, they harbour the ache in their bellies. Some see him as being immoderate. But Benjamin Disraeli had an answer for the Tinubu-phobia when he said: ‘Moderation has been called a virtue to limit the ambition of great men, and to console undistinguished people for their want of fortune and their lack of merit.’ There are empirical examples of Nigerians, irrespective of tribes and especially among the Yoruba, the man’s cradle, that have benefited immensely from his political endorsements and large-heartedness. But sadly, these same people still hypocritically relish speaking ill of him or futilely try to bring him down. In the past or now, they has failed and even in the future, their evil plots against Asiwaju will fail.

Surprisingly, Tinubu relishes welcoming such backstabbers back to his fold. Most of us see this as a weakness but he sees that to be one sacrifice of greatness that he must pay. One can only hope that this inclination of taking back backstabbers would not turn to be his undoing later in life.

Whoever doubts Asiwaju’s progressive credentials needs to embark on historical excursion. At a time that the Yoruba states of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Osun and Ekiti were falling to the gangsterism of dethroned People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2003 and 2007, it was only Asiwaju’s Lagos that stood to absorb the heat of conservatism before eventually launching, single-handedly, the worthwhile battle that liberated the former western region but Ondo, from the grips of rampaging agents of reactionary politics. The giant progressive strides that the nation is witnessing today are a consequence of Asiwaju’s political acuity. This gives credence to Walt Whitman’s statement: ‘Produce great men, the rest follows.’ Progressivism is indeed taking firm root in the country today because of the great political mind possessed by Asiwaju. Indeed, Charles de Gaulle was right by saying: ‘Nothing great will ever be achieved without great men and men are great only if they are determined to be so.’

Tinubu is indeed and always politically determined to succeed. And it is this uncommon determination to be great and to politically liberate the masses from the yoke of reactionary politics that compelled him to take with zeal, progressive politics, since year 2014’s merger of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) with other opposition parties – far beyond the west and to all parts of the country. This gave birth to All Progressives Congress (APC) that today controls the seat of power in Abuja. The move at that time generated spite, covetousness as much as cynicism from those who always see impossibility rather than possibility in Tinubu’s laudable political initiatives. The difference between Tinubu and the rest in the political arena is that he sees possibility where others predict doom. His often-talked-about political superiority complex does not mean haughtiness, although it might appear to be so in the eyes of the mischievous among politicians and political watchers who want to see it so. Tinubu feels a higher esteem over the obstacles he desires to surmount and he is blessed with the rare courage of overcoming them, with enough energy reserved for any eventuality. The outcome of the 2019 general elections underscored this fact.

The positive roles of Tinubu in the successful political merger of the opposition parties; the outcome of the 2015 that sent the ruling party out of power and the consolidating 2019 general elections that cemented the ouster of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP), and the fact that a precedent has been set that makes it impossible for a ruling party, especially at the centre, to take others for granted in the political space have become a burden of envy in the minds of most politicians that see Tinubu as a threat. Rejection of Tinubu’s political ingenuity is nothing but a deliberate creation of avoidable amphitheatre of perfidious hypocrisy.

Despite the sleaze of political mudslinging by mostly beneficiaries of his political large-heartedness, Tinubu’s democratic scorecard remains very glittering and unassailable. The current firm control of the centre by erstwhile opposition, hitherto considered as impossible, and the invaluable role played by the Jagaban of Borgu land in bringing it to fruition merely confirmed him as the definitive contemporary political leader of the progressives in the country.

Like Awolowo during his lifetime, Tinubu has, in contemporary Nigerian politics, become a thorn in the flesh of conservative/reactionary/progressive politicians with lesser candour. This unjustifiable kvetching syndrome by some of the current political elite class against Tinubu has become a catalyst that gives him more inspiration to surpass his present enviable feat. But for a politician like Tinubu, it would most likely have been impossible for Nigerians to have the golden opportunity of looking back and saying today: We are free at long last from the shackles of democratic feudal that see power at the centre as their birth right!  This writer wholeheartedly wishes Asiwaju, the hubby of adorable Yeye-Asiwaju/Senator Oluremi Tinubu,  plenteous happy returns of today in sound health and continuing political relevance. Happy birthday to you sir. And as the Yoruba would pray: Igba Odun, Odun kan!

  • Tinubu one of democracy’s strong pillars, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has sent warm felicitations to the National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on his 67th birthday, scheduled for March 29th.

Buhari, in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and publicity, Femi Adesina, described Tinubu as one of the strong pillars of Nigeria’s democracy.

He joined the APC family in celebrating the Asiwaju of Lagos, who is also the Jagaban of Borgu Kingdom in Niger State, for his selflessness in serving his country, and making life better for many.

The President recalled some of the sacrifices of the party chieftain to include standing up against injustice in 1993 when the June 12 elections were annulled, which led to his going on political exile for many years, and a protracted legal battle with the Federal Government when funds for Lagos were withheld.

President Buhari affirmed that Asiwaju’s uncompromising posture in the face of injustice and refusal to follow the path of least resistance for personal gains stand him out today as a rare breed and one of the cornerstones of Nigeria’s democracy, especially with his track record of persistence, consistency and effective leadership.

As the father of modern Lagos State, the President commended the visionary and inclusive leadership style that Asiwaju provided for the commercial nerve centre of Nigeria for eight years, laying the foundation for a modern and technologically driven city, and ensuring that every successive leader in the state sticks with the master plan of a greater Lagos.

President Buhari rejoiced with family members, friends, political and business associates of the Jagaban on this auspicious milestone, which is further brightened with the many successes recorded at the recently concluded polls by his strong leadership.

The President believed the best years of the APC National Leader are still ahead, praying that the almighty God will grant him longer life, good health and more wisdom to keep serving the country he loves so much.

  • Tinubu is a ‘destiny changer’, says group

A Non-Governmental Organisation, Centre for Reform Education Initiative (CREI), has congratulated the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu as he clocks 67 years.

The former Lagos governor was born on March 29, 1952.

Executive director of CREI, Hon. Chinwe Ugwu, who gave the congratulatory message in a statement described Tinubu as a “destiny changer”, who has impacted on the lives of not a few individuals and change the course of Nigeria’s democracy.

“I want to heartily congratulate the national leader of the APC, the only Jagaban, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, a destiny changer; a philanthropist per excellence, a servant leader and father of the fatherless”

Ugwu extolled the democratic credentials of Tinubu noting that he has “deepened democracy and contributed to the institution of good governance and development of countless individuals in the country.

“We cannot forget in a hurry how you teamed up with other patriots in the aftermath of June 12 presidential annulments to ensure that the military was sent packing from the political scene. We salute your courage and resilience in restoring democratic governance in the nation in 1999”

She revealed that Tinubu was the initiator and executor of the change agenda that ushered in the President Muhammadu Buhari administration in 2015 adding that his resilience, popularity and political sagacity and ingenuity played an indelible role in the triumph of the APC in the just concluded general elections.

“As a thorough bred democrat and astute political engineer, he laid a solid foundation for the development of Lagos into what it is today. He has being able to chart a progressive course for the south west, which is now extended to the national levels.

“Today, Lagos is the reference point of accelerated development courtesy of the foundation laid by Asiwaju. It is axiomatic that Lagos is one of the few states that can survive on its own. Credit must go to this great Nigerian, who created the enabling environment and initiated policies that sustained Lagos.

The executive director said: “we, at CREI wish to profoundly felicitate with the Jagaban, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu as he clocks 67 years. He is an asset to Nigeria and will remain an indefatigable factor in the nation’s political firmament “.

She said the APC leader has in his 67 years on earth transformed into a legendary figure and attain the status of our foremost nationalists such as the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Sir Ahmadu Bello.

“There is no doubt that Asiwaju Tinubu has warmed himself into the hearts of majority of Nigerians and his name is now etched in the hall of fame of great nationalists and patriots of our land.”

Ugwu said CREI acknowledged the leadership recruitment style of Tinubu, which is anchored on competence, hard work and credibility. “We must appreciate Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu for his recruitment policy on leadership, whose sole aim is to groom individuals into complete and purposeful leaders to deliver on good governance”

She described Tinubu as “a man of peace, a man with a large heart, a detribalised Nigerian, a political colossus and an established defender of democracy”.

  • Tinubu real Yoruba leader – Ehindero

In the interview with Dare Odufowokan, Assistant Editor, the General Overseer of Messiah New Life Ministry Inc., Archbishop Joseph Ehindero, warned those antagonising the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to desist, saying the former Governor of Lagos State is the true leader of the Yoruba race today. The cleric bared his mind on some other national issues. Excerpts

WHAT is your reaction to the victory of President Muhammadu Buhari in the Presidential election?

Buhari’s victory is divinely ordained. His victory was revealed to me months before the election, and my prediction of Buhari’s victory was published in an interview I had with a national daily which came out on Tuesday 18th December 2018.

Before then, several ministers of God were predicting Atiku Abubakar’s victory but God clearly told me that Buhari will win, and my prediction was published in that interview.

In 2015,that was how God revealed to me that the then incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan would lose and my prediction equally came to pass as the main opposition leader then who is now the President, Muhammadu Buhari, will win the election. This is to show people that there are still genuine prophets in this country.

What I want Nigerians to clearly understand is this and it is that Buhari is on a divine mission to salvage Nigeria from the rot of the past. Buhari has a divine mission to fulfill for this nation, and I enjoin Nigerians to support his government.

I’m not a politician but a Minister of God and whatever I’m saying about Buhari is the revelation that God gave me concerning him. Buhari is an unusual politician, he is not self-centred and from his actions, especially his anti-corruption war, the man wants to restore sanity in this nation. Buhari wants to restore Nigeria’s lost glory.

What Nigerians must realise is that this nation has been in a mess before Buhari came in as president and now he has done a lot to bring Nigeria back on the path of greatness. It would have been a big tragedy if Buhari had lost to Atiku because Atiku is not the man God wants to use to redeem Nigeria.

What is your reaction to the court case against Buhari’s victory by Atiku and PDP?

Atiku is wasting his time. Buhari’s victory is secured. My advise to Atiku is that he should not waste his time. Nothing would come out of his efforts. What I expect him to do is to be sober, and reflective. He should do stock taking, and I’m sure if he does this, he will know that he has been very lucky. He should stop fighting Buhari. He should stop wasting his time and resources. God has a divine mission for Buhari for this period in Nigeria’s history. God wants Buhari to consolidate on his present achievements and Nigerians are enjoined to co-operate with his government.

Before the polls some prominent clerics predicted victory for Atiku Abubakar but …

(Cuts in) It is very sad and unfortunate that some highly regarded men of God were also involved as they predicted Atiku’s victory. What God revealed to me was that those eminent men of God who claimed that they saw Atiku being declared winner were not led by the spirit of God to make the pronouncements. They were led by the flesh. Some of these clerics have personal hatred for Buhari and this is wrong. They should not have allowed their emotions to lead them into taking wrong decisions. I’m also not happy that some Christian bodies appear to be taking sides and were openly in a subtle manner canvassing support for Atiku Abubakar. This is very wrong. This is a lesson to all Christian leaders and prophets that they should always allow the Holy Spirit to lead them and not the flesh. It is the same thing that happened to Afenifere leaders. They did not behave like elders by openly supporting Atiku before and during the elections.

Afenifere leaders have no justification for backing a particular candidate. As elders and leaders, they are supposed to play the role of fathers to all. They are supposed to be neutral. By being partisan and taking sides, they were not promoting the interests of Yoruba people.

This is why I like Tinubu and give him kudos. If not for him, the behaviour and actions of Afenfere leaders would have jeopardised Yoruba interests. I give kudos to Tinubu. By his actions, he has proved to be the true Yoruba leader. Enough is enough, Afenifere leaders should stay out of politics and behave like genuine leaders who are not partisan and self-centred.

Now that President Muhammadu Buhari has won re-election, what is your advise to him?

Buhari should hit the ground running. He should quickly form his cabinet, and set to work immediately. He should take Nigeria to the next level as he promised during his campaigns. First and foremost, he should sustain the on-going war against corruption. Corruption has permeated every facet of our lives, and this is why some Nigerians who are involved are not happy with Buhari’s war against corruption. Buhari should not spare looters. Every loot must be recovered, and looters must not go unpunished.

Then his administration must also sustain the on-going tempo in the area of infrastructure development like the construction of roads and rail lines that are on-going across the country. It is good that his administration is already shifting attention to the agricultural sector, an area that has been neglected by successive administrations in the country. For those Nigerians that are complaining, they need to exercise patience. Nigeria has been messed up before Buhari took over and he can’t transform the country overnight. Buhari is not a magician. I believe that if Nigerians co-operate with him, he will be able to take Nigeria to greater heights.

For those politicians that are newly elected and those that will be going for their second term, what’s your advise to them?

My advise to them is very simple: They should see politics as an avenue to serve people. They should not be self-serving or self-centred.

I also want to advise our politicians not to see politics as a do-or die affair. If you lose today, you may win the next time. Politics is like a game; so our politicians should develop the spirit of sportsmanship.

Our political leaders should not see public office as an avenue or short cut to ill-gotten wealth. In other climes, their leaders use public office to serve people; this is what our leaders should emulate. Many of our leaders have traveled outside the country and they’ve seen how leaders over there serve their people with love and passion; this is what I expect them to do also in Nigeria.

  • Tinubu seeks adequate treatment for them

All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday urged the Lagos State government to ensure adequate treatment for the survivors of the collapsed building.

Asiwaju Tinubu, who described the incident as tragic, also commiserated with the families .

The former Lagos governor called on Lagosians to donate blood to the survivors.

In a condolence message to the families of the victims, the APC leader said the pupils who died did not deserve to die the way they did. He prayed for the repose of the kids’ souls.

He said the government must fast-track the demolition of any building that failed integrity test.

A statement signed by Tunde Rahman, his Media Adviser, quoted Tinubu as saying: “The building collapse in Ita-Faji, Lagos Island on Wednesday is a tragic occurrence. I commiserate with the families of those kids who lost their precious lives.

“They do not deserve to die the way they did. May God comfort their families and grant repose of the souls of those young ones. Government must now ensure adequate medical treatment for the rescued victims.

“I appeal to Lagosians to voluntarily donate blood not only to victims who urgently require blood but also to improve our blood bank in the state.

“While we await the inquiry into the circumstances that led to the incident, we must all support government’s intervention efforts.

“The Lagos State Material Testing Laboratory for buildings must be strengthened and the officers must do their work.

“Government’s laid down regulations on building construction and maintenance must be faithfully respected and enforced. To mobilise support for these regulations, Community Development Associations need to come to government’s aid.

“If after the collapsed building had been found to be weak and marked for demolition, everybody had done what was required of them, perhaps this terrible incident would have been averted.

“On its part, the government must fast-track demolition arrangements once a building is discovered to be weak and deserving of being pulled down to save lives.

“Above all, we must all take appropriate lessons and learn from this sad incident.”

  • Sanwo-Olu’ll work for greater Lagos, says Tinubu

All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the governorship election in Lagos State.

He congratulated the governor-elect, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, saying that he deserved the victory.

After giving his acceptance speech at the state party secretariat on Acme Road, Alausa, Ikeja, Sanwo-Olu and the deputy governor-elect, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, had stormed the Bourdilion, Ikoyi residence of the leader.

The governor-elect was accompanied by party elders, chieftains and associates. He thanked Lagosians for giving him the mandate.

Party followers were singing and dancing at the secretariat, following the declaration of the results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Savouring the joy of victory, Tinubu told reporters that Lagosians voted for APC candidates in appreciation of the diligent services rendered to the state by successive progressive administrations.

He noted that Lagosians ignored the campaign slogan of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Jimi Agbaje, who was advocating freedom.

The former Lagos governor said the campaign approach was unwarranted and illogical because the Centre of Excellence has not been in bondage.

He said: “It is not about freedom fight, but about a thinker and doer and what APC can do in Lagos to develop further and make further progress.”

Party chair Tunde Balogun congratulated members and Lagosians for reposing confidence in the party, assuring them that Sanwo-Olu will not disappoint them.

Balogun said yesterday was a memorable day, hailing Lagosians for making a wise choice.

He said: “Today, history is being made in Lagos as Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu becomes the governor-elect and his running mate, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the deputy governor-elect of Lagos State.

“He will be sworn in on May 29 as the 15th governor of Lagos State. I pray all of us will be alive to witness the event.”

At the party secretariat were Southwest Women Leader Chief Kemi Nelsom, senators Musiliu Obanikoro, Tony Adefuye and Ganiyu Solomon, Cardinal James Odunmbaku, Chief Lanre Rasak, House of Representatives members James Faleke, Rotimi Agunsoye and Jimi  Benson; Chief Lanre Rasak, party secretary Dr. Wale Ahmed, Yemi Alli, Chief Funso Ologunde, Ashipa Kaoli Olusanya, Women Leader Jumoke Okoya-Thomas, Joe Igbokwe, Abiodun Salami, Sunday Dare, Damola Kasumu, and Legal Adviser Demola Sodiq.

  • PDP, other opposition parties are repeater stations, says Tinubu

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday said that he was confident of victory in the governorship and House of Assembly elections in Lagos State.

He described the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and other smaller opposition parties in the Centre of Excellence as repeater stations, whose leaders only come out for periodic showmanship every four years before returning to their shells.

Predicting doom for the PDP flag bearer, Tinubu said APC will win and form the next government in Lagos State because it enjoyed popular support.

He said the progressive beat will not stop in Lagos because Lagosians have sealed a pact with the successive people-oriented administrations that have done the state proud since 1999.

Tinubu, who voted at his Unit 047, Sunday Adigun Street, Alausa, Ikeja around noon, said the PDP cannot match the ruling party in terms of strength, numerical support, achievements and prospects.

The party leader spoke in English and Yoruba to reporters on the importance of the polls, its implications for the future of Lagos, the futile agitation of the PDP for power shift and the hitch caused by corps members’ protest, which delayed the take-off of the exercise in some locations before their grievances were resolved by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Tinubu, who was inundated by complaints about the late-coming of polling officers to many units, said there was no cause for alarm, assuring that voters will return to the polling booths to cast their ballot.

He said: “Lagosians will come out to vote. They know that our government is not joking with their welfare, the provision of educational benefits and free medical services for children up to the age of 12. The voting is going on smoothly. Only those who are afraid will believe that people will not come out to vote. We are not afraid.

“We know what Lagos wants. Lagos wants progress and development. We want our children to make progress. We want the children to be better than us. We want them to become lawyers, judges, doctors, honourables. Why would they not vote? We give them free education. We pay their NECO fees. We pay their WAEC fees. We give them free JAMB forms. They go to clinics and take free drugs and they are treated freely if they are not more than 12 years of age. We set up vocational institutes for them. They learn trades.”

The former governor said the foundation for future progress and prosperity laid by the successive governments has been sustained in the interest of Lagosians.

He alluded to the increasing monthly internally generated revenue, road construction, infrastructure battles, urban renewal and rural development programmes of the administrations in the last 20 years.

Tinubu said Lagosians voted for the APC in appreciation of the giant strides and expectation of predictable developmental policies and programmes that the incoming government will strategically implement.

He said many non-indigenes have been trooping to Lagos in search of the Golden Fleece because the state is working, productive, attractive and accommodating to all ethnic groups.

Tinubu stressed: “We cannot stop the non-indigenes from coming to Lagos. If Lagos is not good, they will not come. If there are diseases in Lagos, they will not come. If there are upheavals here, if there is lack of jobs here, they will not be coming. Those leaving their towns and trooping into Lagos, we cannot say they should not come. We cannot say that they are giving us burden. The rest I cannot say.”

Chiding the change campaigners on the borrowed platform of ‘O to ge,’ Tinubu said those behind the unwarranted agitations wallowed in ignorance, stressing that Lagos State is different from Kwara State.

He said: “There is a limit to copy cast. Lagos State should be ‘O to pe,’ (Lagos should be thankful to God. Lagos has recorded tremendous developments since I was governor. The internally generated revenue of the state that we inherited was N600 million. Today, it is over N30 billion.

“No nation, state has achieved financial independence as Lagos. Other states depend on allocations from the Federal Government. We do not depend on any allocation before we meet the capital needs, build roads; starting from Oregun Road. The real estate worth of Lagos to property owners is exponentially better than any state in this country. Lagos has become the fifth largest economy in Africa. Let me see the governor, the leader who has done that.”

Exuding confidence, he added: “We are going to win. We are the only party in Lagos. The rest are repeater stations. They come every four years and they go back again like craps. There is nothing like threats to the APC. A rolling stone gathers no moss. There is no PDP in Lagos. Leopard cannot change its skin. The state belongs to the progressives. We are progressives and we are going to win this election.”

Tinubu reflected on the previous presidential and National Assembly polls, saying that the media reports exaggerated the Okota incident.

He said: “In terms of security, Lagos is always ready to celebrate democracy. It is still violence-free.  I take exception to the Okota incidence of two weeks ago.  I am very upset about that. Our people are not violence-prone. If we have 1, 325 polling units and only five units were affected by the Okota incident; we should not classify that as serious. That is negligible.

“How significant is five units out of 1,325 units that you now classify Lagos as violent? You are not doing justice to us. You are not doing justice to the economy. You are not doing justice to your own medium. You are not doing justice to INEC.”

The Iyaloja-General of Lagos, Chief Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, who also voted at the unit, applauded the peaceful conduct of polls, urging Lagosians to sustain the tempo of harmony.

She lamented the delay caused by the corps members’ protest, taking solace in the extension of voting hours by the umpire.

Tinubu-Ojo said: “The exercise has been peaceful. People came in the morning, but they returned because INEC officials were not ready. But, I know they will come back now that voting has started.”

  • Tinubu urges Lagos APC to work for victory

All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday urged members  to work for the victory of the Lagos State governorship candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and 40 House of Assembly flag bearers at the Saturday elections.

He also advised party followers and supporters to promote peace and harmony on poll day by shunning violence across the state.

Lamenting the low turnout of voters during the presidential and National Assembly elections, the former Lagos State governor said there was room for improvement on Saturday.

He admonished youths who are fond of playing football on the road during elections to  cast their ballots before their game.

Tinubu spoke on the imperative of consistent and effective mobilisation of voters for a successful poll at the APC stakeholders’ meeting held at the party office on Acme Road, Ogba, Ikeja.

He charged the canvassers, mobilisers and party agents to rededicate themselves to the cause of the party, assuring that the party will reward them for a job well-done after the exercise.

Tinubu urged local party leaders to summon meetings of all members to strategise on how to deliver their units, wards and local governments to the party.

He said: “Go to your wards and see your leaders at the local government as canvassers and mobilisers. Take the membership list, mobilise and do your best. If you want to be a leader, you try to act like a leader.

“On Saturday, I want to be able to announce that the in the 20 local governments, according to the INEC, we have won 40 House of Assembly seats. If you lose your polling booth, you are on your own. If you lose the House of Assembly in your constituency, don’t come back home. That means you cannot deliver.”

The meeting was attended by Deputy Governor Idiat Adebule, deputy governorship candidate Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, party chairman Tunde Balogun, secretary Dr. Wale Ahmed, former deputy governor Olufemi Pedro, former Minister of State for Defence Demola Seriki, Governorship Advisory Council (GAC) members — Prince Tajudeen Olusi, Busura Alebiosu, one-time Finance Commissioner Olawale Edun, Rabiu Oluwa, Olumuyiwa Sosanya, Pa M.A. Taiwo, Senator Tony Adefuye, Lanre Rasak, Dr. Yomi Finnih, Mutiu Aare, Cardinal James Odunmbaku, and Prof. Tunde Samuel; Funso Ologunde, Pa Alabi Macfoy, Southwest APC Women Leader Mrs. Kemi Nelson, Sanwo-Olu’s Campaign Manager Tayo Ayinde, Mrs. Fausat Gbadebo, Toun Adediran, Kayode Opeifa, Olujobi Adio Badmus, Oyinlomo Danmole, Abiodun Salami, Bayo Ajisebutu, Chief Chris Ekwilo, Damola Kasumu and Demola Sodiq.

Thanking party members for the outcome of the presidential and National Assembly polls, Tinubu, who lamented the inexplicable voters’ apathy, said that despite the low turnout, Lagos was delivered for the APC.

He specially expressed gratitude to chieftains and members from five local government-Mushin, Agege, Ikorodu, Lagos Mainland and Lagos Island, saying that they voted massively for the ruling party.

He said: “These five local governments came top and we have to recognise them. Those that did not measure up to expectation, we have to encourage them. On Saturday, be prepared. Call ward meetings tonight. Ask about the problems of party members. Some people have complaints. Try to solve them.”

Reflecting on the previous polls, he added: “We went to vote, not to buy votes. You should go and work and come back for reward. The party and government have been serving you. We pay WAEC and JAMB fees of your children in schools. We take care of students in schools.

“You agents, you need to be wise and encouraged. You worked without taking money from the party. Canvassers should double their efforts. Don’t go to sleep. You did not mobilise enough. It is a shame. Out of six million voters, we did not record half. It was a poor performance, unlike the Lagos that I know. Alimosho was disappointing. Oshodi was a struggle. So were Kosofe and Somolu. Voters barely showed up.”

Tinubu called for peaceful polls, advising members and Lagosians to shun unruly behaviours during the exercise.

He said: “We don’t want fight. We want peace. We want to win election. We are going to beat our opponents at the polls. Definitely, there is no need for violence. When you are confident of winning, you don’t disrupt voting. When you are provoked, ignore them.”

Tinubu charged party faithful to exercise patience on the long queue during voting, adding that they should remember to use their index fingers to thumbprint the ballot papers.

Firing salvos at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the former governor said it is a party of poverty and poison.

To the party agents, he said: “Agents have tried. Don’t look for money. Look at the dividends of winning. Go and mobilise the elders to vote.”
