  • Tinubu hails direct primary

Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday said the party rejected Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s re-election bid because he has failed the leadership test.

He said while a governor is expected to perform in office and fight the infrastructure battle, he is not expected to turn his back on  the platform that brought him power.

Tinubu described the party as the major backbone of the governor and the architect of his victory at the poll, stressing that he should have carried the members along in his activities.

He spoke shortly after participating in yesterday’s open direct governorship primary at his Ward C, Ikeja Local Government Area.

Hailing the adoption of the direct primary, the former Lagos State governor said the method was superior to the delegate system.

Tinubu applauded the huge crowd of members that came to vote, describing it as democracy in action.

He said he surrendered to the generality of party members who demanded the direct primary and rejected the governor’s second term bid.

The former governor said while the delegate system could be hijacked by rich aspirants, the direct system is insulated from corruption because it is open and promotes inclusiveness.

Tinubu said: “Seeing is believing. You have seen the people. You have seen participatory democracy. You have seen transparency. As a leader, I had to surrender to these people. It is their wish to participate in the exercise and determine who will be the next governor to direct the affairs of Lagos. And that has been demonstrated openly by the people. They have democracy and the anti-corruption policy of this government.

“Where you have delegate system, they move 24 hours around their constituencies. They collect from A, they collect from B, they collect from C, depending on the number of candidates. They give scores to the highest bidder. Stop promoting corruption and opposition to open primary. Allow them to openly demonstrate on the line where they belong with their identification cards. You kill corruption in the party.

“I wouldn’t have been the governor in 1999, if open primary had not been adopted. Throughout the state, I went to the nooks and crannies of the state; to 245 wards to canvass for support. It was not the delegate system.”

Tinubu said the circumstances that warranted his support for Ambode in 2014 does not exist in 2018.

He recalled that the party accepted Ambode’s ambition in 2014 when he brought him from the civil service, adding that the same party has now rejected his second term bid.

Tinubu said: “Who did I support in 2014? Life is dynamic. If a party which made me the leader of the structure in Lagos; it is only when you have followership that you’re a leader in democracy. If I look back and I don’t find them again, if I don’t respond to them, if I fail to accede to their request, I would have failed the leadership test. This is not personal. It is beyond me as a person. In the preface of every democratic constitution, you see: ‘we the people.’ It is preceded by ‘we the people’. I had to submit myself to the wishes and yearnings of our party.”

The former governor said Lagos APC was warming up for next year’s elections, stressing that the primary was the beginning.

Urging others to learn from the developments in the Lagos APC, Tinubu said: “This is an elixir to the general election. Ambode Akin is doing well, yes. He has to be a good party man. Not only the glamour, not only about brick and mortar. The chance is determined by character. For you to become an influential person, you have to respond to the yearnings of those people. This is politics. This is one man, one vote. They are for you today. If they change tomorrow, you have to abide by it.”

Tinubu also cautioned against any plot to destroy the party, ahead of the general elections.

He said: “You don’t bring the roof down. You don’t bring the house down. Safeguard the foundation. The exercise you have witnessed today is a prelude; it is good for the general election of the party. It is good for Buhari’s endorsement to continue. 1.9 million votes. You don’t see this type of crowd. If the summation today is less than that, there will be disappointment.”

Tinubu added: “Look at that in the larger picture. If this house that accommodates all of us; we are facing one way. We are supporting the president. If they are changing, I have to abide by that. I have no choice. If you are a good party man; look at how long we have been here for how many years of democracy. Twenty five to 30 years of nurturing democracy. You must have one good reason for the people to continue to believe and respect you.”

There was anxiety at the party’s office on Acme Road, Ogba, Ikeja, following the rejection of the primary by the Clement Ebri-led Primary Committee.

Ebri said the panel will not affirm the primary results because the ballot papers and boxes it provided were not used.

Frowning at the rejection, Tinubu, who visited the committee members at the Protea Hotel, Ikeja, described it as an afterthought and in bad faith.

A party source said: “This may give room for insinuation that the panel may have an agenda. People may start alleging that the panel was compromised along the way. We are going to resist any annulment. The committee has not shown any sign of intention to work harmoniously with the Lagos State APC Executive Committee to ensure a successful primary. The committee asked for an office within the party secretariat to operate. The office was provided.

“But, since they left for their hotel suites in Protea, they have shunned the office provided for them at the party secretariat. The committee said that the primary began without the distribution of ballot papers and result sheets. The party had earlier rejected the use of ballot papers and ballot boxes. The party preferred queuing on the line behind the posters of the two aspirants.”

Lagos State APC Women Leader and former House of Representatives member Jumoke Okoya-Thomas said the plot to destroy the party will fail.

She said: “Our party is supreme. This is the wish oif the party. Our people have spoke at the primary.”

  • Lagos APC: Tinubu insists on Sanwo-Olu for ticket

    •Meeting with Buhari ‘fruitful’

    •How party ’ll pick candidate

    •Panel promises credible election

All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu said last night that his position on the candidates battling for the party’s governorship ticket remains.

Tinubu’s media adviser Tunde Rahman said last night in a statement on Tinubu’s meeting with the President in Abuja:

“Asiwaju Tinubu and Chief Bisi Akande were invited by President Buhari and it turned out to be a good and productive meeting. Asiwaju was quite pleased to have conferred with the President who has always shown himself to be a committed party member and a true democrat.

“Just like the President, he is looking forward to a good and credible primary that is peaceful and free of rancor. As previously stated, Asiwaju plans to vote in this primary and his position regarding the relative merits of the candidates remains unchanged.”

In the race are incumbent Akinwunmi Ambode and former Commissioner Jide Sanwo-Olu. The primary election is today.

Asiwaju said of his choice in a statement on Monday: “I am encouraged by the presence of a candidate in this primary, who has served the state in senior positions in my administration, the Fashola administration and even in the current one. While possessing a wealth of experience and exposure, he is a young man endowed with superlative vision and commitment.

“Most importantly, he understands the importance of the blueprint for development. He esteems it as a reliable and well-conceived vehicle for the future development of the state. He also knows the value of reaching out and working with others in order to maximise development and provide people the best leadership possible. With people like him at the helm, the state will write the proper history for itself.”

In  377 wards across 20 local governments, members of the APC will vote today.

Every card-carrying member of the party is eligible.

There will be no ballot box and ballot paper. Party members will queue behind the posters of their preferred aspirant.

The mode of the primary is “open direct primary”, which involves open and physical counting of members on queue behind the posters of their chosen aspirants.

They will be accredited by 9a.m. Election will take place by 12 noon. Members will show their APC Identification Card. No white slip will be accepted,  Chairman Tunde Balogun said yesterday.

Posters of the two aspirants will be held by their agents. After accreditation, party members will queue behind them.

“They will be counted on the queue and recorded. After that, voting ends. The agents of aspirants will sign. Then, the results will be taken to the local governments, the final collation will be done at the state level,” Balogun told The Nation in an interview.

The chairman urged members to troop out to participate in the exercise.

He said the shadow poll will be very transparent and peaceful across the wards, urging members to maintain decorum as they participate in the exercise.”

Ambode is campaigning on continuity. Sanwo-Olu has promised an all-inclusve government –  if elected.

Chairman of the electoral panel former Cross River State Governor Clemant Ebri attributed logistics challenge to the shift of the poll from Monday till today.

He told Ambode when he visited the Government House in Alausa: “I also like to apologise for the delay; it had to be postponed as a result of logistics in Lagos, Imo and some other states because of the pressure and work load from the secretariat and other developments that have taken place.”

Raising the stakes on the shadow election, Ebri said: “Lagos is more like a decider and like they say, when Lagos sneezes the rest of the country catches cold.

“So, that is why we are very careful about what we are doing and the National Chairman asked me to send his best wishes to you and ask us to come and do the right thing to the satisfaction of all members.

“Moreso, the President of this country stands for transparency and detests corruption and, a situation where no one feels manipulated.

“The process we are laying out is such that will ensure and guarantee transparency and credibility. We have people of integrity in this panel.

Other members of the panel are: Alhaji Ahmed Mahmud Gumel as secretary; Mr Nze Chidi Duru; Chief Clever Egbeji, Sen. Clever Ikisikpo and Ambassador Jerry Ugokwe.

On the integrity of the members, Ebri said: “These are not rookies in politics; they are people who have been tested. You can see senators, former governors, former deputy governor, former member of the House of Representatives; so, this is a star-studded team.

“I can assure you that we have all the experience that you want and you can think about to conduct this exercise. We assure you of our sincerity and transparency and we seek your cooperation in providing a level-playing field.’

Ambode replied:  “I receive this election team as being acceptable and credible to me enough to discharge their civic responsibility to the best of their abilities and to also say that whatever it is that is the outcome of the primaries, your presence has also shown that this will be credible and this will be acceptable to me.”

“So, it is very clear to me, all I seek is credible primaries, transparent primaries and level playing ground that we will all be proud of at the end of the day for the outcome,” the governor said, adding:

“There were issues that we have raised that we are also trying to correct.

“The bottom line is this, we are family, we must not go into the elections divided because this is the very first time that our party is controlling the centre and also the state; that is what I want us to continue.

“The issues that I raised have been put in form of a letter which I will pass to the chairman and I believe the committee will look into it judiciously.

“And also I welcome the stakeholders meeting which will allow you feel the pulse of what is going on in the state.”

The panel’s members attended a stakeholders meeting at the Lagos State APC secretariat in Ogba last night to perfect the planning for the election.

  • No rift between Tinubu and I, says Ambode

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday said reports of a rift between him and All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu were untrue.

A statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Mr Habib Aruna, in Lagos, faulted reports of a major rift between Tinubu and Ambode over the governor’s second term bid.

Aruna quoted Ambode as telling party faithful in Epe during the election of delegates for the presidential primary election and national convention that the reports indicating a fight between him and Tinubu were out of place, and there was no fight anywhere.

“I want you to know that there is no fight anywhere. The National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and my good self we are not in any fight, we are not in any controversy.

“We are praying to God that the best is yet to come and the best will be what Lagos State deserves and I want you to just continue with your prayers that at this time, God will show His hand and make sure that everything that is of blessing to Lagos State and also blessing of Epe will come to pass,” Ambode was quoted as saying.

The governor commended leaders and party faithful who contributed to the success of the delegates’ election in Epe, saying APC remained the party to beat in Lagos and Nigeria.

“We have just concluded our Delegates’ Election in Epe Local Government and by consensus, we have picked our three delegates that will be going to the National Convention come October 6 for the presidential direct primaries and the convention for all other people.

“I want to say a very big thank you to all our delegates that are present here; I want to say a big thank you to all our leaders that have also supported us to make sure that this event has come and is done very successfully.

“I want to reiterate once again that our party, All Progressives Congress (APC), remains the party to beat; we are the party at the national level and we are going to remain the party in the state,” the governor said.

According to the statement, the event was held at APC’s secretariat in Aiyetoro, Epe,  with three national delegates from Epe Division — Alhaji Shakiru Seriki (Bamu), Otunba Bode Alausa and Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, the Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, elected.

  • Osinbajo, Oshiomhole, governors, Akande, Tinubu: vote Oyetola

    •Aregbesola canvasses votes for Oyetola

Osogbo, the Osun State capital, literally stood still yesterday, as the All Progressives Congress (APC) kicked off its campaign for the September 22 governorship election.

Gboyega Oyetola is the party’s candidate.

At the event, which was graced by National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole, members of the National Campaign Council and chieftains of the party from the Southwest region, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) raised the hand of the party’s candidate, Gboyega Oyetola, and handed over the flag to him.

The rally, which was held at the Oshogbo Township Stadium, was attended by National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; Kano State Governor Ganduje, who chairs the committee; Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi; Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun; their Ondo State counterpart, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and Ekiti State Governor-Elect Kayode Fayemi.

Former Osun, Ogun and Ekiti governors Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba and Segun Oni were also on the train.

The APC is one of the leading candidates in the election.

Also in the race are: Sen. Iyiola Omisore (Social Democratic Party), Ademola Adeleke (Peoples Democratic Party), Moshood Adeoti (African Democratic Party) and Fatai Akinbade (African Democratic Congress).

The stadium was filled with supporters who also occupied  the spaces outside the stadium.

Welcoming the crowd, Ganduje said what they saw confirmed the socio-economic development of Osun under the APC in the last eight years. He pointed out that the mammoth crowd also confirmed the love the people have for the party. He urged them to vote for continuity. He also said the APC believes in free and fair elections.

Urging the electorate to vote for the APC on September 22, Amosun said Osun is a state of the progressives. He said: “Let nothing change. Let’s troop out in large numbers to speak for the APC with our votes. If you love President Buhari, vote for APC.”

Aregbesola sang a number of songs at the rally and urged the people to vote for Oyetola. Ajimobi described Oyetola’s candidacy as God’s project. Akeredolu said ensuring success for Oyetola requires collective efforts like the broom, which is the party’s logo. For Fayemi, Ekiti has been restored to the progressives circle. He added: “Osun has been in our kitty. So, let’s keep it intact. Oyetola has been a long member of this struggle. He is trustworthy and reliable. Whoever loves Buhari and other APC leaders will support Oyetola. We shall all get to the promised land.”

Oshiomhole spoke of the need to sustain the good legacies of Aregbesola. He recalled that he was in Osun several years ago to organise workers strikes. He pointed out that the transformation of the state under Aregbesola in the last eight years has been massive.

The National Chairman reminded them that Aregbesola  took over eight years ago after years of rot.

His words: “Oyetola is a finance expert who has passion for the development of the state. No one can help you govern if u don’t have the skills. He has worked very hard and was very successful in the private sector. He has the capacity to translate his vision to reality. He worked hard as a loyal Chief of Staff to Aregbesola. We hereby present to you a tested and trusted human being to be the next governor of this state.”

While presenting Oyetola with the flag of the party, Osinbajo said God brought a blessing to Osun in Oyetola.

Tinubu described Oyetola as  a reliable transformation agent, who is loyal and capable.

He said: “Oyetola is God’s promise indeed. He has been our engine room in years past. He is now coming home to serve you. After succeeding in the private sector, it is good to come back home and serve one’s people. The team will help Osun succeed like Lagos. Youths will gain employment under his leadership.  We were surprised when he declared his intention. He is coming to reform the state. Be patient, jobs are coming. He is not a corrupt leader. He is coming to work for you. We held direct primary and the popular candidate emerged. Don’t let anybody deceive you.”

Osoba said he came to thank God for having been born in Osogbo 79 years ago. He urged residents to vote for Oyetola.

Akande explained that the party is the supreme house no member should attempt to destroy, because it is bigger than any member. He added: “Let’s support APC to keep it strong.”

Oyetola thanked God for the day, describing it as special. He said some refer to him as a Lagos boy to discredit him. ” But I’m a true son of Iragbiji. Look at the good works Aregbesola’s APC government has done in the last eight years. Vote for me for sustenance. I have learnt the ropes before coming out to contest. Just do it right on September 22.”

  • ‘Tinubu, Amaechi didn’t impose Cole’

A CHIEFTAIN of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, has denied that APC stalwart, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and Transportation Minister, Rotimi Amaechi, imposed the Chief Executive of Sahara Energy, Pastor Tonye Cole, as governorship candidate.

He spoke yesterday in Port Harcourt, while describing last Thursday’s endorsement of Cole in Lagos by stakeholders in Rivers APC as a step in the right direction.

Eze urged some displeased members of APC in Rivers to embrace the popular choice of the Abonnema-Kalabari-born Cole.

Governor Nyesom Wike, while responding to Cole’s adoption, described him as Amaechi’s business partner, with the intention of looting the treasury.

He alleged Asiwaju Tinubu recommended and imposed Cole to enhance his (Tinubu’s) business activities in the state.

Eze urged Wike to desist from attemping to bring the character and persons of Tinubu and Amaechi into disrepute.

He said: “The reaction by Wike is unacceptable to the leadership of APC in Rivers State, as it presents the leaders of the party in the state as incapable of selecting and electing our candidates on our own terms.

“Wike’s reaction on the coming of Cole shows that he is already frightened. I will not be shocked if he considers resigning before the 2019 election, to avoid the embarrassment of awful defeat that awaits him, if he summons courage to contest.

“Politics truly is a serious business to be left in the hands of a person like Wike. It comes to me a great relief for Pastor Tonye Cole to accept to offer himself to rescue Rivers State from its present pitiable state.”

  • Atiku: why PDP didn’t snatch Lagos from Tinubu

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said he regretted not helping the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to win in Lagos State during the 2003 elections.

He said he would make the presidency unattractive after restructuring the country.

Atiku, who spoke yesterday during a visit to the Lagos State PDP secretariat, said he allowed the party to spare Lagos because of his relationship with ex- Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He said it was unfortunate that he (Atiku) allowed his personal interest to override party’s interest on the decision of the PDP to win the Southwest.

Atiku said the party had learnt its lesson and urged members to support him to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 general election.

Said he: “When we were approaching the 2003 election, I told my boss to give me the authority to take over the Southwest and he gave me that authority. I took over the states with the exception of Lagos.

“This is because Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and I have come a long way from our days in the PFM to the SDP. So, I decided to leave Lagos for him. We could have taken over Lagos. My brother and sisters, I want you to forgive me for leaving Lagos out of that arrangement.

“If I have another opportunity, I will ensure that Lagos goes with other Southwest states. My brothers and sisters, I appeal to you to give me that opportunity to move Lagos to the PDP fold.

“That takes me to where we are. Today we are one of the worst economies since the return of democracy in 1999. Today, the country is facing severe case of insecurity. You are even much better here. In the North, we cannot travel; we cannot go to farm because they will kidnap us.

“I want to even say that after this rainy season, we may not have food to eat. But, again I wish to say that this country enjoyed improvement of lives under the PDP and whatever we built under the PDP is now shattered.

“We are now more divided than we had ever been in this country. But I bet you, I have said it that if you give me the opportunity, I will correct the mess. This is one of the most important elections we are going to hold in this country because our present and future depend on the outcome of the poll.”
