Buhari a true democrat – Tinubu

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, on Monday described President Muhammadu Buhari as a true democrat.

He spoke in Abuja during the public presentation of a book titled: ‘Muhammadu Buhari – The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria.’

Tinubu, who was one of the reviewers of the book, also said Buhari was a disciplined and focused person right from his youthful days till the present time.

Stressing that the President was in haste to bring changes as a young leader, he said Buhari as older leader is now slow and steady.

Other leaders including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon and former United States Ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell also eulogized Buhari at the occasion.

Tinubu said: “This authorized biography of Nigeria’s Leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, attempts a broad characterization of the different stages of his life and professional career.

“Essentially, the book explores how his professional career, his personal life and prior experiences in government shaped and prepared him for the momentous assignment he now has.

“From the book’s pages, we see a man who has lived his life on assignments that always intersected with vital moments in the nation’s history. He was a man on assignment, when, in the military, he served bravely in a civil war to keep Nigeria united.

“He was on national assignment when he became military head of state in a well-intentioned effort to straighten things out, and set Nigeria on a better path.

“When he ventured into politics and competed for the Presidency, culminating in his 2015 election victory, he was still on assignment, showing that there was no other way for this nation to go but the way of democracy, no matter how difficult the path may be.

“Now, as sitting President, he is on an assignment, against time, to undo the wrongs of nearly two decades of bad governance.

“Such is the life of this man. Always in the public eye, doing things in his different, disciplined and Spartan way. From this compelling narrative, neatly demarcated into three parts and 24 chapters, the reader is able to glean the quintessential Buhari.”

    Tinubu: recession requires Nigerians’sacrifice

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has said that Nigeria needs the the sacrifice of all to overcome the prevailing economic recession.

In a brief remark at the investiture of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokerss (CIS’) President, Mr. Oluwaseyi Emmanuel Abe, the former Lagos State governor noted that Nigeria is blessed with both human and natural resources, which, properly harnessed, will take nation out of the recession.

Tinubu spoke also on the significance of electricity in driving economic development, recalling how Lagos State invested in independent power project to generate electricity during his time as governor.

Also speaking at the event, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said the country should rely on taxes and not oil. He identified addiction to oil revenues as the country’s biggest problem.

He decried the belief that the country is doomed “unless oil flows and oil money fills the Federation Account for our tiers of government to share”.

At the investiture, former AMCON Chief Executive Officer Mustapha Chike-Obi, spoke on the theme: “Nigeria’s economy: Growth, the only imperative”.

Tinubu described Chike-Obi as one of the best economic managers the country has ever produced.

In his presentation, Chike-Obi urged the country to borrow to finance specific capital projects, saying the fact that borrowing was misused in the past does not mean borrowing as an economic option is wrong.

Tinubu, Atiku, others proffer ways for economic recovery

Nigeria needs to tap into its enormous natural and human resources to redirect her economy away from dependence on oil revenue and create a broad economic base to harness it tax potential and domestic investments for sustainable growth.

This was the submission of political and business leaders yesterday in Lagos at a lecture on “Nigeria’s economy: Growth the only imperative” held to mark the investiture of the president of the Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers (CIS), Mr. Oluwaseyi Abe.

All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former managing director of AMCON Mustapha Chike-Obi; Mr Oluwaseyi Abe and other economic and investment experts agreed on the need to diversify the economy and seek alternatives that could guarantee long-term growth and stability, away from the fluctuations in oil prices.

Tinubu emphasised the important position of leadership and sustained investments in the economic recovery plan, noting that “any orchestra without a solid conductor cannot be successful”.

He added that investments in economic growth drivers and major infrastructure, such as electricity, are necessary to achieve other aspirations, such as domestic manufacturing base.

“Today, Nigeria is going through very serious economic challenges. We are blessed with human and materiel resources. The most important component of these resources is human resources; that is why change begins with us,” Tinubu said.

He challenged Nigerian professionals to think together and devise creative solutions that could help in solving some of the pressing national problems citing the bold pioneering initiative he coordinated with other professionals to champion the course of independent power production.

The former Lagos State Governor pointed out the need to explore all available options including coal and waste to generate powers.

Atiku highlighted the need to broaden and increase the efficiency of the tax collection system as a way to ensure Nigerian economy can sustain on the resources of her citizens.

“We can’t just borrow our way out of our oil addiction. Our governments must live on taxes, the way other democracies do. It will help us live within our means, as it means government can only spend what the people can bear. It will help ensure accountability as tax payers are more likely to ask for accountability when the money comes directly from their pockets,” Atiku said.

He noted that the constant complaints about oil price, pipeline vandals and lack of funds had tended to divert and distract from the real challenges the economy is facing, which majorly dwell on the unworkable economic model and need to restructure government finances so that politicians have a real incentive to create a more conducive business environment.

He said the main cause of Nigeria’s economic problem is the addiction to oil revenues and the dependence on central revenue generation.

“”It is, therefore, clear that rather than praying for higher oil revenues, we should seize the current opportunity to get over our addiction to oil revenues. Discovering new oil wells in the north or south is no substitute. Government should look to sustainable sources of revenue, mainly taxes, duties and other levies. And it can only enlarge the tax base by encouraging diverse economic activities right across the country and investing in human capital development to produce the entrepreneurs, inventors and workers of the future,” Atiku said.

According to him, rather we need federal government officials who are willing to step back and carefully work out how they can empower the private sector to grow the economy and create jobs. And I don’t mean selecting a few companies deemed worthy of government support. No, we need radical reforms that streamline our bureaucracy and eliminate rules and regulations that stifle innovation. We also need robust management processes that ensure that public money buys us better infrastructure, education outcomes and healthcare.

Abe said that if the federal government must sell national assets, that must be done through the nation’s capital market.

According to him, there is nothing wrong in selling the national assets especially those that are under performing to save the economy.

“The country will surely come out of the recession if actions and measures being taken by the government are properly executed. I see us coming out of recession latest from the first quarter of next year,” Abe said.

‘Tinubu has good intention for Ondo APC’

AN All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Bolaji Odidi, has hailed the party’s National leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, for his efforts in bringing core progressives into the mainstream governance of Ondo State after 16 years of Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) dominance.

Odidi, who spoke with reporters on the crisis over alleged endorsements of some aspirants in the APC, said the former Lagos State governor, as a political strategist, would not descend too low to endorse any aspirant publicly.

According to him, the purported endorsement was a political gimmick to intimidate prospective contestants and delegates.

Odidi, who is a party leader in Ondo South, noted that if the APC national leader has a plan to endorse any aspirant, he would have signified that before collection of nomination forms by aspirants.

He said: “Asiwaju Tinubu is a man of reputable character. He had made it known before that he would remain neutral in the choice of party candidate for the 2016 governorship poll. If he is interested in imposing any aspirant, he would have done it publicly and not behind the backdoor.”

The lawyer noted that in 2012 when Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) was picked as candidate by ACN leaders, it was made public and other aspirants were informed.

He called for credible primaries that would uphold the principle of justice and political cohesion.

Odidi urged the leadership to consider Ondo South, particularly Ilaje extraction, for deputy governorshiop slot.

The APC chieftain said the incumbent chairman, Isaac Kekemeke, is from Ijaw axis, Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs Prof. Cladius Daramola hails from Ikale.

He added that it will be logical if the deputy governor’s slot goes to Ilaje in the interest of justice and fair play.

  • APC chieftain slams Abayomi for letter to Tinubu

APC chieftain slams Abayomi for letter to Tinubu

•‘Party’s National leader has right to back aspirant’

AN All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Razaq Ayodele Obe, has insisted that the party’s National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu committed no offence for supporting any aspirant of his choice in the governorship poll in Ondo State.

The oil and gas mogul, in a chat with reporters in Ado Ekiti yesterday, criticised an APC governorship aspirant in Ondo State, Dr. Tunji Abayomi, for his letter to Tinubu, accusing the latter of planning to impose an aspirant as his preferred candidate for the November 26 poll.

The petroleum engineer-turned politician, who hails from Ilara Mokin in Ifedore Local Government of Ondo State, described Abayomi’s action as hypocritical and an attempt to gain cheap popularity.

Obe noted that rather than attacking the personality of Tinubu, whose support Abayomi had also courted, he advised him and other aspirants to keep on reaching out to the delegates, who are eligible to vote at the shadow poll.

He said: “I am one of those averse to the idea of one politician rising up and imposed a candidate. But Asiwaju Tinubu reserves the right to support whoever he wants to  become the Ondo governorship flagbearer provided the constitution and guidelines on how a candidate should emerge is not circumvented.

“I would have risen up to condemn the APC national leader, if he had unilaterally imposed a candidate. But he had given assurances that although he is backing a particular aspirant, the rights of other aspirants would not be trampled upon by disallowing free and fair primary election.

“With all sense of modesty and rational thinking, I expected the aspirants to have praised Tinubu, rather than pouring invectives on his personality in spite  of the sacrifices he made for APC to thrive in Nigeria and Southwest.”

“To me, it could have been a different thing if Asiwaju Tinubu has secretly been supporting a candidate of the PDP. The person they accused him of supporting is a member of the APC and it would be a flagrant and brazen infringement of his rights for people to call for his head for taking a stand in this matter.”

In spite of the raging controversies, Obe was confident that the APC will win the election on the premise that the Ondo populace are already disillusioned with lack-lustre performances of Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s administration.

Obe appealed to the national and zonal leaders of the party to rein in their members and prevent looming crisis in the party that could rob it of victory despite the open and unfettered chances the party now enjoys.

He said the party was able to make remarkable outing in the 2015 general elections in Ondo State, owing to palpable cohesion within its ranks.

He urged the political gladiators to sustain the tempo for APC to bounce back to reckoning in the next election.
