Senator Tinubu makes case for the aged

Senator Oluremi Tinubu from Lagos Central yesterday urged the National Assembly to expedite action on the Social Security Bill for the aged sponsored by her.

She urged the government, corporate bodies and individuals to help the elderly to ensure that they do not suffer.

The Senator, who spoke at a town hall meeting tagged: “The elders are our treasure,” held at Apapa Local Government Secretariat on Burma Road in Apapa, Lagos, said the elderly deserved social protection.

Senator Tinubu, represented by wife of the council chairman, Mrs Sarah Joseph, said going by the records of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the elderly were not being treated fairly in Nigeria.

To ensure that the aged are well treated in her constituency, she set up an Elderly Citizens’ Assistance Scheme (ECAS), which gives out N10,000 each to over 1,300 beneficiaries.

She said: “The form of social protection is what I sought to promote in a bill on social security for the elderly people which I sponsor at the apex chamber. The bill has now progressed to the second reading.”

The council chairman, Hon. Adebayo Joseph, praised Senator Tinubu’s contributions, adding that her gesture for the aged in her senatorial district is an indication that she cares so much for them.

He said she had complemented the council’s effort at empowering the masses and the aged in her constituency, adding that the initiative is a means of survival for the aged.

A beneficiary, Mr Peter Ojelabi, said he could not quantify the senator’s gesture, adding that he would start a petty business with the money he got.

At Coker-Aguda Local Council Development Area (LCDA), where the event was also held, its Chairman, Omobolanle Akinyemi-Obe hailed the senator’s efforts on the aged.

She said a bill to cater for the elderly, being sponsored by her, would go a long way to ameliorate the suffering of the aged if passed into law. “Senator Tinubu’s passion for the elderly should be emulated by everyone who believes he/she will be in that position one day,” she said.

Buhari, Tinubu, Akande, others meet Atiku

Prominent leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday met with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar at his Abuja private residence.

The APC leaders, who met with Atiku behind closed doors for over an hour, described the meeting as a continuation of the party’s consultations with past leaders and stakeholders across the nation.

Those that met with the former vice president included the former head of state; Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), the National Leader of the APC; Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the party’s interim National Chairman; Chief Bisi Akande.

The meeting is coming on the heels of the defection of 37 members of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House of Representatives to the APC.

Atiku, who spoke with journalists shortly after the meeting, said the discussions were very fruitful, stressing that he had always espoused the two party system.

He said that he welcomed the formation of the APC, adding that he would meet with his friends and political associates with the view to taking a decision on the next line of action.

The former Vice President stated further that the formation of the APC was healthy for the nation’s democracy, stressing that it would give the Nigerian people a credible alternative in the 2015 general elections.

Atiku said: “We want to let you know that we had very fruitful discussions and you know I have always believed in a two party structure.

“So I welcome the formation of APC. We have discussed extensively and I will meet with my political associates and friends.

“Most of us have been friends and political associates for over two decades. I will call my stakeholders across the country. We will take a decision and address the press and let you know our decision.

“I congratulated them (APC leaders) and welcomed them because it will improve competition and governance. It is healthy for our democracy.

“Once you have one very strong party and weak ones, there is no way the opposition can check the government in power.

“If the South Africans faced apartheid in the past, Nigeria is facing colonialism. The struggle has been long for the enthronement of democracy in our country.

“It is time we realised we have responsibility to our generation and those yet unborn. I think it (APC) will give Nigerians an alternative during elections. So I told them I will consult with my associates and brief the press later.”

Chief Akande, who led the parry’s delegation, said the visit was to cement a long standing political relationship with Atiku spanning more than two decades.

“We feel that it is necessary to meet people of like minds to rise up and salvage the country. All of us that met here were comrades in politics.

“We only met today to cement that comradeship and all is well cemented. We are moving together to work for this country,” Akande said.

  • Tinubu, Ahmed hail The Nation

    Tinubu, Ahmed hail The Nation

Former Lagos State Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the management and staff of The Nation for winning the Newspaper of the Year and other categories at the 21st edition of the Nigeria Media Merit Awards (NMMA).

The frontline politician urged the management and workers to maintain the standard and win more laurels.

The Nation won the Babatunde Jose Prize for Newspaper of the Year and five other awards at the NMMA in Ikogosi-Ekiti, Ekiti State, last weekend.

Tinubu, in a letter to the newspaper, noted that the honours were well-deserved.

Editor Gbenga Omotoso won the Dele Giwa Prize for Editor of the Year. The newspaper’s Editorial Board, which has won laurels for its editorials on critical issues, won the prize for Editorial Writing. Three of its editorials were finalists in the category. The winning entries were Systemic rot; The Real Sacrifice and A Time To Clean the Augean Stables.

Assistant Editor (News) Olukorede Yishau won the Intercontinental Bank Prize for Capital Market Reporter of the Year. Assistant Editor (Investigations) Joke Kujenya clinched the Peter Odili Prize for Power Reporter of the Year, with her entry, Why Govt, Workers Quarrel Over PHCN, which gave rare insights into why workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) and the Federal Government were bickering over the agency’s privatisation.

Senior Correspondent Collins Nweze won the UBA Prize for Money Market Reporter of the Year with his report, titled: National Assembly vs CBN.

This newspaper’s reporters were also finalists in categories, such as Columnist of the Year, Tourism Reporter of the Year, Human Rights Reporter of the Year, Telecoms Reporter of the Year, Oil and Gas Reporter of the Year, Columnist of the Year, Investigative Reporter of the Year, Newspaper Reporter of the Year and Foreign News Reporter of the Year.

Omotoso and Editorial Board Chairman Omatseye were finalists in the Columnist of the Year category.

Serial award winner Olatunji Ololade was runner-up in three categories — Foreign News Reporter of the Year, Newspaper Reporter of the Year and Investigative Reporter of the Year.

Assistant Editor (Arts) Ozolua Uhakheme was runner-up in the Tourism Reporting category. Kunle Akinrinade was also a runner-up in the Human Rights Reporting category.

Assistant Editor Lucas Ajanaku was a runner-up in the Telecoms Reporter of the Year category. Also, Assistant Editor Emeka Ugwuanyi was a runner-up in the Oil and Gas Reporting category.

Tinubu’s letter reads: “Job well done. Let me specially congratulate the staff and management of The Nation for their impressive showing at the 21st Nigeria Media Merit Award (NMMA). The Nation deservedly won six prestigious awards that night. The recognition is a resounding validation of the contribution the newspaper has made to journalism and particularly in disseminating news and information in a comprehensive, timely, robust and professional manner.

“That you won the Babatunde Jose Newspaper of the Year award particularly gladdens me. It confirms that the newspaper has more than come of age. It is the coronation of the paper as a national paper with formidable reach and coverage and as a clear leader. Besting long established papers like of The Guardian and Punch, means that we have come far in a relatively brief period. This is a testament to the hard work and commitment to excellence of all involved in turning the idea of The Nation newspaper into the current reality.

“Your success in five other top categories viz Dele Giwa Prize for Editor of the Year, Capital Market Reporter of the Year, Money Market Reporter of the Year, Editorial Writing Prize and Power Reporter of the Year confirms your fine performance and reputation as a superior all-round newspaper.

“We now move forward into a critical moment in our nation’s journey. Our commitment to democracy and good governance will be tested. To a material degree, The Nation’s progress will depend, I daresay, that Nigeria’s development will depend largely on how organisations discharge their role as the fourth estate.

“Thus, I urge staff and management not to rest on their oars. This is just a glimpse of what can be accomplished if you remain true to your mission.

“In the years to come, we should witness a more brilliant performance. The newspaper must stake its position as an exemplary paper, a champion for democracy and the rule of law, and a voice for the voiceless. Without sacrificing your neutrality, the paper must seek to shine the light of knowledge in a way that it brings justice to the greatest number of our people.”

Kwara State Governor Ahmed Abdulfatah also congratulated The Nation.

Ahmed, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Abdulwahab Oba, described the award as an endorsement of The Nation’s robust editorial policy and professional excellence.

The governor said The Nation, since its establishment, had not only remained steadfast in its commitment to the ideal of balance reportage but parades a crop of columnists, whose opinions and analysis have continued to define the nation’s political and economic landscape.

He urged the paper not to rest on its oars.

    Editorial Board celebrates its award

At its meeting yesterday, The Nation’s Editorial Board clinked glasses of wine. Members of Nigeria’s elite corps of editorial writers had good reasons to exchange banters and drinks to the health journalistic intellectualism.
In this season of laurels, The Nation stood peerless and proud. It won the Newspaper of the Year, Editor of the Year award and others. But the Editorial Board showed especial snob quality in both the Diamond Award for Media Excellence and the Nigeria Media Merit Award.
It scooped up a record five nominations in two award nights and crowned it with the NMMA editorial writing prize.
For the NMMA, The Nation had all three nominations for editorial writing. It was the only prize all who attended knew had been decided because the list of nominees already was in the brochure for the awards night. The three editorials were: “Systemic rot,” relating the contradictions in the firing of the former Power Minister Barth Nnaji. The others were “Real sacrifice” and “Cleaning the Augean stable.”
“It was a crowning endorsement of a year of hard work, imaginative richness and elegance of style,” said Sam Omatseye, chairman of the Editorial Board.
For DAME, The Nation did not win the first prize, but had the first and second runner-up positions. The Punch won the prize.
“With five nominations and one grand win, we could ask for more,” said Omatseye, “but we must be thankful for the reward for an exceptional year.”

  • Tinubu: end of an era

    Tinubu: end of an era

ALL Progressives Congress (APC) National leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu reacted this morning to the death of former South African President Nelson Mandela:

The former Lagos governor said: “Mandela’s death signals the end of an era of the generation of African leaders who  never coveted power, but used power for the good of the greater number of their people. Africa has indeed  lost an Icon, a formidable figure, a man of character and conviction  and a political leader unequalled in the history of Africa. His demise is a great loss to Africa. I extend my sympathy to the government and people of South Africa and to the wife and family of Nelson Mandela.”

Tinubu went on: “He represented the moral compass in African leadership and the reference point for transparency and good governance. For long, his compelling story of struggle, prison life and journey to power will remain a classic and a tonic for others that may come after him. The Mandela story will forever resonate across the world and though retold over and over, will never lose its effect and power.

“Mandela demonstrated to the world that the black man is of a higher conscience, strong conviction and brilliance, compassionate and able to master his destiny. That is part of what Mandela represented. He made us proud as Africans. He led and showed us the way. He challenged us to heed the higher calling of selfless service. But much more, he boosted the African spirit and carved a new reputation for Africa in the global world.

“Mandela left a legacy of quality leadership, selfless service and sacrifice and a people centred governance. His legacy will endure. From his life, other African leaders are challenged to do right by their people and submit to democratic ideals. Sadly, we have seen more African leaders jettison or depart from the Mandela option. Many of them have become sit tight leaders, while others amongst them have sought by dubious constitutional processes to elongate their stay in power. They celebrate Mandela, but lack the discipline and morale fortitude of Mandela. They stand in the way of their people progressing and make Africa a laughing stock.

Let his death revive us to the ideals of democracy. Let his political legacy, commitment to his people and the examples he left behind challenge us all to a renewed commitment to make our country and Africa better for the greatest number of her citizens.

  • Buhari, Tinubu fighting for better Nigeria, says Lamido

Buhari, Tinubu fighting for better Nigeria, says Lamido

All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu are working for the good of the country, Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido said yesterday.

The governor spoke in Dutse, the state capital, while receiving former military Head of State Gen. Abdussalami Abubakar, who was rounding off his two-day visit to the state.

Lamido, one of the G-7 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors crusading for internal democracy and good administration of the ruling party, described PDP National Chairman Bamanga Tukur as a “polio virus to Nigerian democracy”.

Lamido, who declined to join the APC like five of his colleagues in the G7, described Tukur’s style of leadership as a threat to democracy, which people fought for, losing wealth and lives.

He said Tukur’s action was capable of throwing the country into “total doom”.

Lamido told Gen. Abdulsalami: “It is quite unfortunate that 14 years after you, Abubakar Abdulsalami, out of your national patriotism and selfless commitment to the nation, conquered all the temptations around you and relinquished government, things are being run like this.”

According to the governor, the PDP’s house is in a shambles as a result of Tukur’s leadership style. He accused the party leader of lacking ideas on how to develop the party.

He said his colleagues who earlier in the week defected to the APC did so out of frustration, adding: “ Most of them had worked for the advancement of the PDP in their states, but instead of the party to show appreciation, it ended up sending people parking unceremoniously.”

The governor described Gen, Abdulsalami as a democrat for his role in handing over power to a democratically- elected government in 1999. He is a “father of democracy in Nigeria”.

He urged him to raise up his hands and say “no” to anti- democratic forces and enemies of democracy.

“It is high time people like you started talking so as to rescue democracy and the nation so that the legacies you have bequeathed will not be trampled upon by never do wells,” Lamido told his guest.

To Gen. Abubakar, Nigeria is at the crossroads and will need the prayers of all to survived.

He said the country would not survive in an atmosphere dominated by rancour and violence.

“Whereever we are, we must make peace and this is also applicable to politics.

“We, as people, must avoid violence and if there is any difference among us, there are procedures to follow – like the judiciary,” he said.

The former head of state noted that the effort to restore democracy in the country during his regime was possible because of the commitment of all Nigerians.

Gen. Abubakar praised Lamido for transforming his state positively, noting that the governor executed people-oriented projects.

He said: “Whoever left Dutse 10 years ago would be overwhelmed by the level of progress recorded by the Lamido administration.”

Gen. Abdulsalami visited the Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Nuhu Muhammad Sanusi, in his palace and inaugurated the multi-billion naira State High Court, which he described as the best in the country.

Anambra poll: Buhari, Tinubu, others protest at INEC headquarters

Top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led by a former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari defied police and military barricade to march on the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in protest against the shoddy conduct of the governorship poll in Anambra State.

They demanded outright cancellation of the election by INEC.

They also called for the resignation of INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega and dissolution of the management of the electoral body.

Reminiscence of pro-democracy struggle between 1993 and 1998 during the dark days of military era, the leaders trekked for about five kilometers from APC National Secretariat in Blantyre Street in Wuse II part of Abuja to Zambezi Crescent in Maitama District where INEC is located.

The initial stage of the trek was piloted by Governors Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun State) and Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti State) and many members of the National Assembly.

The great trek was later coordinated by a former National Secretary of the defunct Congress for Progressives Change, Engr. Buba Galadima.

But when the procession took off, Buhari and some top leaders of APC withstood the rigours of standing in an open lorry for the protest march.

Others tucked in the lorry were the National Chairman of APC, Chief Bisi Akande, the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; a former National Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party, Chief Ogbonnaya Onu; a former National Chairman of the defunct All Peoples Party(APP), Alhaji Yusuf Ali; ex-Governor Ahmed Sani Yerima, ex-Governor Segun Osoba; ex-Governor Niyi Adebayo; Senator Nazif Suleiman; the Deputy National Secretary of APC, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, Senator Abu Ibrahim; and a former member of the House of Representatives, Comrade Dino Melaye.

Others who participated in the hectic protest were Senator Oluremi Tinubu; Senator (Prof.) Sola Adeyeye; Senator Domingo Obende; Senator Anthony Adeniyi; Senator Ahmed Lawan; Senator Gbenga Asafa; House Minority Leader, Hon. Femi Gbajiabiamila and the Chairman of the House Committee on the Diaspora, Hon. Abike Dabiri.

Others were the Deputy Minority Chief Whip in the House, Hon. Garba Datti; Deputy Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Suleiman Kawu; Hon. Umar Bago; Hon. Adeola Solomon; Hon. Yakubu Balogun; Hon. Pally Iriase; Hon. Munir Hakeem; Hon. Abayomi Ayeola; Hon. Taiwo Adelekan; Hon. Adeyinka Ajayi; Hon. Gafar Akintayo; Hon. Sunday Adepoju; Hon. Ajibola Famurewa; the APC National Women Leader, Barrister Sharon Ikeazor, APC National Treasurer, and Hajiya Sadiat Umar Farouk,

Waving brooms amidst blare of revolutionary songs, traffic was brought to a standstill for about two hours along the ever busy Ademola Adetokunbo Street in Wuse II.

Many workers in the business district abandoned offices to identify with the protesters.

They wielded leaflets and placards with the following inscriptions: “Anambrarians, Nigerians are with you,” “Anambra Election: Jega, not the INEC Messiah, Resign Now,” “2015, No hope with Jega,” “No Supplementary Election in Anambra,” “Cancel Anambra Governorship Election Now,” “Election Fraud Must Stop Now.”

  • Tinubu: merger will transform electoral system

Tinubu: merger will transform electoral system

The All Progressives Congress (APC) will transform Nigeria’s electoral system for good, its national leader Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu said yesterday.

He expressed optimism that the party, would work towards enthroning transparency in governance.

Tinubu, speaking in an interview broadcast on Aljazeera television, said Nigeria’s political landscape has changed .

“It will change forever and change for good. The scale and balance of power is tilting and changing to the opposition. We are moving from imperialism to proper democracy,” the former Lagos State governor said.

Tinubu said rebuilding confidence in the electoral system is crucial in achieving a virile democracy.

“The sophistication, the honesty, trust, transparency necessary in electoral process have been absent in this country. The balance of power is tilted in favour of the incumbency.

“Nigerians have never seen a group that will have a common focus and put patriotism as the cornerstone of their guiding principle.

“This (APC) is a party that will put people at the forefront of their cause in participating in politics. Never has there been a group that will focus on the welfare of the Nigerian citizenry and fight corruption and waste in governance. There are many areas that this new APC alliance and effort will unveil.

“We will ensure that we have credibility in the voting system, the character, commitment of our people – the value that you want to pass the torch to the coming generation on democracy. It is very important that we are able to do that.

“Otherwise, it will turn out that election after election, confidence in the electoral process will drop and we don’t want that to happen. For us, it’s a new beginning. It’s a new hope. It’s a new commitment.

“The perception alone of having so many governors working together in one party and platform will encourage people to share ideas, share values and encourage them to put their confidence in the electoral system to change the process and make sure one man, one woman , one vote should be the order of the day,” Tinubu said.

According to him, the shifting political equilibrium would rekindle the expectation of the observing world that opposition is not only existing on paper but “physically present” in Nigeria.

Tinubu said APC is working hard to gain power “in an honest and peaceful manner,” which he said “will strengthen the confidence of other democratic observers around the world.”

He added: “Nigeria, in responding to this development, must realise that help is here. Hope is here; that we will represent them effective to engender true democracy in the country; that their vote will count; that the nation will be represented by the leadership that can be trusted.

“And if we trust our leaders and encourage them for not breaking promises, they we will develop faster, and we have honesty and transparency in governance, we will eliminate mediocrity – we will be able to focus on developing our country.

“This is a blessed nation with human and material resources and we should be able to harness these resources for the greatest interest and number of our people.”

The G-7 governors of the Peoples Democratic Party on Tuesday morning began a crucial meeting with top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja.

The meeting which began at 9.30am at Kano Governor’s Lodge followed a similar one by the governors that ended at midnight.

Although the agenda of the session were sketchy at press time, there were indications that it might be connected with overtures to the governors by APC leadership.

A top source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The meeting is the last in the series to guide the governors to either remain in PDP or defect to APC.

“It is part of the ongoing consultations by the aggrieved governors.”

Tinubu, Ajimobi, Aregbesola, others celebrate Great Lam

Top politicians within and outside the All Progressives Congress (APC) gathered to remember former governor of Oyo State, Alhaji Lam Adesina, in Ibadan on Monday. TAYO JOHNSON reports that Great Lam was celebrated in death as much as he was in his lifetime.

It was a bright and beautiful Monday. The sun shone gently out of the azure sky. It shone brightly so much so that it was able to brighten the day for everyone. Perhaps, the clement weather was in aggreement with man for a memorable remembrance of Alhaji Lam Adesina, the former governor of Oyo State and Leader of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the state until his death last year.

Great Lam, as he was fondly called by his admirers and followers, died on November 11, 2012.

The state government and the family had made big preparation for the first-year remembrance which began with the launch of Lam Care Foundation at his Felele, Ibadan home. The state slated its own ceremony for the popular Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba.

The programme was kicked off with an Islamic prayer session at his Felele residence.

Renowned Muslim cleric, Alhaji Muideen Bello, in his exhortation, urged guests to be God-fearing, dedicate their lives to God and service to humanity just as Adesina did. He described Lam Adesina as a God-fearing man who lived his life to serve God and humanity. He further said that Lam was a good administrator who did not indulge in fraudulent activities.

His words: “Baba Adesina was very reliable. It was in this stadium, some years ago that I asked Baba Adedibu why he was calling Lam a bastard. He told me that it was political and that Lam was a good person.”

The cleric praised Governor Ajimobi for transforming the state within a short period. He acknowledged his various projects that have changed the face of Ibadan and other towns in the state.

Thousands of members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a few from other parties gathered at the stadium to honour the memory of the late politician. They were led by top leaders of the party from across the state.

As early as 8:00 a.m., the APC members, clad in Ankara uniform (Aso Ebi), trickled into the stadium in groups. They sang songs in praise of Lam as they danced to the rhythm of the drums.

Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi was at the event accompanied by his newly sworn-in commissioners. Former governor of Lagos State and a national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; accompanied by the interim National Publicity Secretary of the party, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, flew into the venue in a helicopter .

Also present at the stadium were the interim National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief Bisi Akande; the Osun State Governor; Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola; a former governor of old Oyo State, Dr Omololu Olunloyo; Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Alhaja Monsurat Sunmonu and Senator Ayo Adeseun.

Others included former Minister of Power, Elder Wole Oyelese; Gen. Oladayo Popoola; former Secretary to the State Government, Chief Michael Koleosho; Iyalode of Ibadanland, Aminat Abiodun; former Deputy Governor of the state, Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarunmi; Alhaji Lateef Oyelade and Alhaji Lamidi Ajadi.

Describing the late Lam Adesina as his teacher, father and political leader, Governor Ajimobi said Lam meant so much to him.

“Some people are calling themselves Lamists to the core. They do not even know that I am one of the core followers of Lam Adesina. When I was vying for this governorship seat, Asiwaju Tinubu and some other leaders of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), took me to him and he blessed me among several candidates as the governor of this state.

“If I have offended anybody here today, you should all forgive me. Let us all work together for the peace and progress of this state and our party,” he said.

Ajimobi then appealed to all members of the APC and other warring factions to sheathe their sword and allow peace to reign for the progress of the party and state and to honour the memory of Lam Adesina.

In his comment, former Secretary to the State Government, Chief Michael Koleosho who served under Lam Adesina, said: “There is no crisis between the governor and anybody in Lam Adesina’s family. Ajimobi is a wise man who does not keep malice with anybody.”

For the Osun State governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola who spoke on behalf of the APC governors, the large crowd present at the stadium was an indication that the late Lam Adesina was a good administrator who always stood for the truth.

“Baba Lam Adesina lived an exemplary lifestyle and that is the basis for celebrating him. We should always ask ourselves what will be said of us when we are no more on earth,” he stated.

The Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheik Suara Haruna, also prayed for the repose of the dead, urging all to emulate Lam’s character.

At the prayer session organised earlier at Lam’s residence, two former governors of the state, Senator Rashidi Ladoja and Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala were present. They supported the Lam Care Foundation launched in the memory of the late politician.

In his remarks, Ladoja described Lam Adesina as a God-fearing man who lived all his life to serve Allah. He promised a regular donation to the foundation.

“There is need to donate to this wonderful foundation to help the needy in order to continue to honour the memory of the late Lam Adesina,” Ladoja said.

Alao-Akala described Adesina as a great man who was selfless and who loved everyone. He also pledged a donation to the foundation.

Earlier in his welcome address, Adesina’s first son, Dr Ayo Adesina, said the Lam Care Foundation was launched to immortalise his father.

He said his father was a philanthropist till death, even as he pointed out that he would ensure that his selfless legacies continue to live on.

Dr Adesina said that the foundation was established early this year and has since donated different materials to charity homes, among others.

He urged eminent personalities at the programme to support the foundation to help the project succeed.

Other eminent personalities at the programme included Senator. Olufemi Lanlehin, the Aare Musulumi of Ibadanland, Abdul-Azeez Arisekola Alao, Engineer Femi Babalola and Chairman, Odu’a Investments Limited, Barrister  Sharafadeen Ali.

Tinubu, Buhari to INEC: Re-strategise ahead of 2015 elections

Former Lagos State Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Tuesday urged the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to re-strategise ahead of the 2015 general elections.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that he made the appeal at Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s fifth year anniversary in office and launch of the All Progressive Congress (APC) party in Edo State.

“We are therefore reminding INEC that it has the responsibility to direct the people and correctly advise the people that it will guarantee a free, fair and credible election.

“We know that power is not easy to surrender. But we want it and we will get it in an honest manner because APC has come to stay,” he said.

He commended the people of the state for their foresight in voting for Oshiomhole adding, “your votes have not been misplaced by the amount of massive development being experienced in the state.

“Since you took that decision five years ago, Oshiomhole has never looked back in terms of infrastructure and economic development of Edo State.

“You have seen and witnessed the radical development. But let me say that this is not our final destination.

“Our destination is to take over the federal level to replicate what Oshiomhole and other APC governors are doing in their states.

“You have accepted APC and it is now your duty to begin to spread the good news around your neighbourhoods and communities.”

Also speaking at the forum, the former head of state, Gen. Muhammadu Buhar (rtd), who congratulated Oshiomhole on his achievements, said, “I am happy that the people can now see the difference.”

Buhari said that he was optimistic that Oshiomhole would continue with his good work of developing the state.

He said that an APC government at the centre would work to eradicate poverty and provide security to the nation.

“If you vote us into power, we are prepared to tackle cases of abduction and killings of people across the nation so that people can move freely in whatever part of this country,” he added.
