  • Tinubu gets honorary doctorate degree from Kano Varsity

Former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, will, on May 25, receive an honorary doctorate degree of Doctor of Science, Honris Causa, from the Kano State University of Science and Technology, Wudil.

A statement yesterday by the Special Adviser (Media) to the frontline politician, Mr Sunday Dare, said a letter by the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. U. G. Danbatta, the university’s Senate and Council as well as the Visitor to the university, Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, had approved the award.

The statement added that the award will be conferred on Asiwaju Tinubu at the third convocation of the institution on Saturday, at 11am.

Aswiaju Tinubu had been appointed the Chancellor of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

  • Emergency rule is belated, says Senator Tinubu

Emergency rule is belated, says Senator Tinubu

Senator Oluremi Tinubu has described the emergency rule declared in three northern states as coming too late and a wrong way to tackle insecurity.

She spoke in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, at the weekend during the conferment of chieftaincy titles on Governor Abiola Ajimobi and his wife, Florence, as the Aare and Yeye Aare Atunluse of Ibadan land.

Senator Tinubu said President Goodluck Jonathan should have curbed the crisis before it escalated to the current level.

Said she: “I think declaring a state of emergency now is a very late thing to do as far as I am concerned. We are a nation at war. So, this is medicine after injury. The harm has already been done. When the president should have done this, he kept quiet.

“He only did it later because of the pressure from the international community. But I pray this state of emergency will not backfire on the safety of the people. We know that we have a centralised government and the policemen there do not know the residents. We pray that it will not have a counter effect. We will wait and see as the case unfolds”

The lawmaker also said the state of emergency would not affect the fortune of the All Progressive Congress (APC) despite that it affected two states under its control.

Senator Tinubu hailed the traditional titles given to Ajimobi and his wife, saying they would spur them in their determination to transform Oyo State.

“I believe that with this title given to him, it will be like an incentive for him to do more and we can only wish and pray that he should enjoy good health and long life to do more for the state.

“I urge the people to be patient, supportive and embrace the projects the government is putting in place. We thank them for their cooperation because without them, he wouldn’t have done much. We want their cooperation so that he can do more for the state,” Senator Tinubu said.

But a not-for-profit advocacy group, the National Think-Tank (NTT), has backed the action, saying it would restore law and order.

In a statement by its National Media Director, Mr. Dele Agekameh, it said it would soon convene a national conference where people would be free to ventilate their opinions on how to enthrone permanent peace in the country.

The group said only the quick return of peace can guarantee the much-needed progress and development, which Nigerians have always clamoured for.

It noted that the security situation in the three states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe was gradually turning the entire Northeast to a theatre of banditry, arson, mindless killings and acts of brigandage, which no responsible government would tolerate.

“This is a trying period for the country and it will take the unflinching support of all Nigerians to bring total peace to the nation. It is only an indivisible, united and focused country that can transform the living standard and promote the economic well-being of the people,” the group said.

NTT urged the armed forces deployed in the states to adhere strictly to the rules of engagement to avoid causing unnecessary pains and anguish to innocent, law-abiding indigenes, who might be caught up in the skirmishes.

It said people should volunteer information on the hideouts and clandestine moves of the insurgents so as to ease the burden imposed on the military by the operation.

“The military needs useful information and workable suggestions from all well-meaning Nigerians, particularly information that would lead to the unmasking of the brains behind this deadly group, the source of their funding and other logistic support for the group, to enable the military carry out this onerous task to the nation at this time, within the shortest, possible time,” it added.

  • ACN, Tinubu, Sani kick as NLC, NBA, CAN back action

ACN, Tinubu, Sani kick as NLC, NBA, CAN back action

President Goodluck Jonathan’s declaration of a state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states was greeted with mixed reactions yesterday.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) endorsed the presidential action.

But the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and its National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu rejected the decision.

CAN President Ayo Oritsejafor said the decision vindicated its position that only force could end the insurgency.

The Christian body and the ACN called for the immediate scrapping of the Presidential Committee on Dialogue.

Pastor Oritsejafor, in a statement in Abuja said: “With the declaration of a state of emergency in the three states, the amnesty committee is no longer relevant and should be dissolved.

“The declaration of a state of emergency in three northeast states is a justified action and a vindication of CAN’s position that negotiation with terrorists will always end up a futile exercise.

“We are being vindicated that no reasonable agreement can be reached with terrorists,’’ the statement quoted the CAN president as saying.

It described Jonathan as a “true democrat and an advocate of human rights protection’’.

“While saying that the state of emergency declared in the three states is not unexpected, CAN calls on the three concerned governors to reciprocate the kind gesture by co-operating with those charged with the responsibility of bringing down the insurgency,’’ it stated.

Mr Okey Wali, President of the NBA, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview:

“We have no doubt that the President has received fresh intelligence that necessitates a harder measure to be taken to forestall further mindless attacks on Nigerians by insurgents.

“We are indeed satisfied by the decision as it has not eroded the political structure of the three states; suffice it to say that democracy is still in place in those areas.

“Our candid appeal is for the members of the Boko Haram to still leverage on the existing opportunities provided by the Presidential Committee on Amnesty.’’

The NLC President Abdulwaheed Omar said it was a good development that showed that a government exists.

He spoke to reporters at the inauguration of an Airtel Telecommunication Call Centre in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital yesterday.

He said: “I think first of all, we must understand that it is within the responsibilities of Mr. President to take whatever step he deems fit to ensure that there is peace and stability in this country. For Mr. President to have taken that decision would mean that definitely, he must have exploited all avenues and discovered that this is the best option. I want to commend that effort especially because of the way it is carried out. It would ensure that it is directly meant to ensure peace and security rather than being like a political victimisation.

“The pronouncement of the President shows that the executive, the legislature and the judiciary have continued to function.

To rights activist Shehu Sani, emergency rule declaration by the President is “a desperate measure and uncalled for”.

Sani, president of the Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria, in a statement last night in Abuja, said the militarisation of the three states would promote arbitrariness.

The statement said: “The declaration of the state of emergency by President Jonathan Goodluck in the states of Borno, Yobe and Adamawa is desperate but uncalled for. It is a fruitless exercise that will neither lead to peace nor assist in ending the violence that has bedevilled some parts of northern Nigeria.

“It is an admission of failure on the side of the government to fashion out ways of addressing or tackling the root causes of insurgences, the state of emergency would only give licence to security agencies to sustain their already gross human rights violation and brigandage that has became the war on terror.”

The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) described as lacking in original thinking the President’s declaration of emergency rule in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa. It urged the National Assembly to reject it.

In a statement in Abuja yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said if force was capable of ending the Boko Haram crisis, it would have ended a long time ago.

The party’s National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, also criticised the measure, warning it can scuttle democracy.

The ACN said while the President was right in expressing outrage over the mindless killings and wanton destruction by the insurgents, he was wrong in proposing more of the same measures that have failed to yield results.

‘’If the medicine given to a patient has not cured his or her illness, is it not futile to prescribe more of the same medicine for the patient? If the declaration of a state of emergency in 15 local government areas in four states in 2011 has not curbed the activities of the insurgents, why extend such measure to other areas? If the use of force in the affected states have failed to curtail the activities of the insurgents, why send in more troops?

‘’There is nothing new in the President’s action. It is more of the same: deployment of more troops to the affected states and the use of tougher, scorched-earth tactics against the insurgents. In the first instance, this stepped-up militarisation of the states amounts to an asymmetric use of force in an environment where the insurgents operate within a civilian population, hence it will ultimately be counter-productive as the death toll will continue to mount while the civilian population – who will be caught in the cross fire – will be alienated.

‘’Secondly, the President should go ahead and disband the committee he recently inaugurated and saddled with reaching out to the insurgents, because by opting to flood the states with more troops under an ill-advised emergency rule, he has succeeded in pulling the carpet from under the Committee’s feet. Who negotiates genuinely with a gun to his head?

The committee’s job is over, the members can as well pack up and go home.

‘’Thirdly, one hopes the President’s action is not linked to the politics of 2015. With the three states militarised, there can neither be electioneering campaign nor voting there. We had warned earlier that as 2015 approaches, the Jonathan administration will increasingly take measures that will make it impossible to hold election in many states The over militarisation of some states in the North, the plan to destabilise the Southwest, using slush funds from the so-called oil pipeline protection contract and the infantile threats from some Niger Delta militants seem to be part of this plan.

‘’Fourthly, what happens if and when the declaration of emergency rule fails to stem the violence, now that the President has gone for broke and played his last card?

‘’In view of the reasons stated above, we hereby reject the declaration of emergency rule in the three states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, and we call on the National Assembly to also reject it and not allow itself to be used to rubber stamp a declaration that is largely cosmetic.

‘’We reiterate our earlier statements that the Boko Haram crisis has its roots in years of bad governance that have produced an army of unemployed, unemployable, disenchanted and demoralised youths who are now ready hands and willing tools for those seeking to perpetrate violence. The unprecedented corruption across the land, as well as injustice and extra-judicial killings are also fuelling this crisis,’’ ACN said.

The party said while the short-term solution to the Boko Haram crisis should be a combination of dialogue and a minimal use of force, the long term measure to deny Boko Haram of willing recruits and make the sect unattractive to anyone is to ensure that the state can adequately meet the yearnings and aspirations of its citizens. And the only way to do this is through good governance that delivers the dividends of democracy to the citizens; stamps out corruption and ensures a just and equitable society.

‘’Boko Haram is like a bad tree. To kill it, it must be uprooted, instead of trimming its branches. The measures announced by President Jonathan on Tuesday will not deliver the killer punch to this reprehensible sect. There is need to think out of the box,’’ it said.

Asiwaju Tinubu said the decision is capable of scuttling democracy.

Tinubu in a three-page statement, said the declaration is a dangerous trend in the art of governance and a deliberate ploy to subvert constitutional democracy.

The ACN Leader said: “The response to the pervasive chaos in the Northern region of the country has been militarisation, mass arrests and extra judicial killings by the Joint Task Force, JTF, a convenient euphemism for an army of occupation seemingly set loose on the people of the localities concerned. “The tenor of the state of emergency declared by the Federal Government yesterday portends danger for the polity. The full militarisation of security operations in these states will compound the already tense situation.”

He held that the full militarisation of security operations in the three states would compound the already tense situation as the invading forces would simply embark on organised pogrom.

His words: “It is now abundantly clear that President Jonathan has finally bared his fangs. By declaring a state of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, he (Jonathan) has intimidated and emasculated the governors of these states.

“It is a display of unpardonable mediocrity and diabolic partisanship geared towards 2015. Borno and Yobe states have been literally under armies of occupation with the attendant excruciating hardship experienced daily by the indigenes and residents of these areas. This government now wants to use the excuse of the security challenges faced by the governors to remove them from the states considered hostile to the 2015 PDP/Jonathan project.”

The administration, by this action, he said, would be setting in motion a chain of events the end of which nobody can predict as, according to him, experience has shown that actions such as this often give root to radical ideologies and extremist tendencies.

He said: “The present scenario playing out in the country reminds one of the classical case of a mediocre craftsman who continually blames the tools of his trade for his serial failure but refuses to look at his pitiable state with a view to adjusting.”

Tinubu said though the country is adrift with the ship of state rudderless as insurgents have unleashed ferocious attacks on all parts of the country, particularly in Borno and Yobe, the uncoordinated approach adopted by the government betrays a grossly incompetent disposition, which is at variance with the realities in the country.

He said: “No governor of a state in Nigeria is the chief security officer. Putting the blame on the governors who have been effectively emasculated for the abysmal performance of the government at the centre, which controls all these security agencies, smacks of ignorance and mischief.”

“This government has failed, or does not know that it is necessary for it to avail itself of the benefit accruable from exchange of ideas and notes among nations of modern world. Technologically advanced countries will never discard the idea or the need for the establishment of an effective local intelligence outfit. Our suggestions along this path have always been met with suspicion and acerbic criticisms from both the informed and the ignorant alike.”

Tinubu added that militarisation, mass arrests and extra judicial killings by the army of occupation euphemistically called the Joint Task Force (JTF), set loose on the people will only compound the security challenges experienced in these states.

The full militarisation of security operations in these states, he said, will compound the already tense situation. The fact that security operatives are killed cheaply and reprisals from the state find expressions in organised pogroms in the immediate communities will further alienate the people who should ordinarily partner with the government in securing their immediate environments.

Tinubu said an army which invades a community, maiming, raping and killing defenceless civilians will end up radicalising the youths whose parents and younger ones have been wiped out most cowardly and recklessly.

For him, rather than hiding its incompetence in tackling the security challenges through the declaration of state of emergency, the administration should rather encourage the development of local intelligence which will inexorably lead to the practice of true federalism.

“Adopting the use of excessive force against those perceived as harbouring terrorists does not portray this government as possessing the wherewithal to find abiding solutions to the lingering security challenges,” Tinubu said.

He urged the Federal Government not to tinker with the mandate of the governors of the affected states under any guise as doing so is potentially destructive.

“If security of a society is about the protection of lives and property of the citizenry, the involvement of the people is sine qua non to effective intelligence gathering and any measure which seeks to alienate them and in particular their elected representatives should be considered as fundamentally defective,” Tinubu stated.

  • Seriki flays Okupe for comments on Tinubu

Former Minister of State for Defence Chief Demola Seriki has chided the Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to the President, Dr. Doyin Okupe, over his comments on the defunct Tinubu Administration in Lagos State. He said: “Our leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is an asset and not a political liability, contrary to Okupe’s statement. Nigerians know those who are political liabilities”.

Seriki described Okupe as a garrulous spokesman and job monger, adding that he has become an expert in falacy and wrong judgment.

The former minister, who spoke with our correspondent in Lagos, said that Okupe was suffering from mouth diarrhoea for describing Tinubu and former military Head of State Gen. Muhammadu Buhari as liabilities.

He added: “The man jhas a mouth diarrhoea. Buhari is a great leader. He has his flaws. But he is a great leader. Why did Obasanjo drop Okupe as his spokesman? Now that he has been dusted up by President Goodluck Jonathan, he thinks he can malign the personality of great me.

“asiwaju cannot join issue with him. When he alluded to what Asiwaju has done in Lagos State, I was disturbed. Tinubu is thye architect of the progress of Lagos State. Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) is the actualiser. Tinubu was the pacesetter and great achiever. Okupe is not versatile.

“Buhari rejected the IMF loan in 1984. That put Nigeria in good stead. Leaders like that cannot be rubbished by Okupe. He is a job monger. Posterity will not judge him right. He is a member of Any Government In Power (AGIP).

  • Buhari, Tinubu to PDP: pack and go

Buhari, Tinubu to PDP: pack and go

For the umpteenth time, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday got the red card from the opposition camp.

Gen. Muhammadu Buhari of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu told the PDP to be ready to quit in 2015.

The duo spoke in Lagos at the public presentation of a book “Witness to history: Action Congress of Nigeria and its struggle for democracy, liberty and justice”.

The 642-page book, written by ACN National Publicity Secretary Alhaji Lai Mohammed, was unveiled at the Civic Centre, Ozumba Mbadiwe, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The event was chaired by Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu.

The opposition leaders reiterated their determination for change in 2015. They urged Nigerians to support the push for power shift to the progressives by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Gen. Buhari, the CPC leader and former military Head of State, spoke on the need to consolidate the merger of the like-minded opposition parties before stepping up the mobilisation of the various constituencies for political action.

Tinubu charged Nigerians to get set for the future electoral contests, adding that “PDP should go in 2015”.

Seasoned poet, Odia Ofeimun, who reviewed the book, praised the author for his courage and sense of duty. He said: “This is not a review, but a statement; a compendium of the publicity output of the party’s spokesman challenging the business-as-usual approach of those in power at the centre. The book is the defender of the public memory of the political situation in the country”.

Dignitaries at the ceremony included: host governor Mr. Babatunde Fashola former Lagos State Governor Lateef Jakande, his wife, Alhaja Abimbola, ACN National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, Otunba Niyi Adebayo and wife, Angela, former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, former Lagos State Deputy Governor Sarah Sosan, Gen. Alani Akinrinade (rtd), Dr. Amos Akingba, Chief Tom Ikimi, Senators James Kolawole, Olabiyi Durojaye, Chris Ngige, Olufemi Lanlehin, Oluremi Tinubu, Babafemi Ojudu, Gbenga Obadara, Ayo Adeseun, Sola Adeyeye, Ganiyu Solomon, Olorunnimbe Mamora and Prof. Adebayo Williams, and Prof. Ropo Sekoni.

Also at the ceremony were the Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, his deputy, Kolawole Taiwo, Secretary to Lagos State Government Dr. Oluranti Adebule, Olawale Osun, Oba Olatunji Hamzat, Otunba Busura Alebiosu, Mr. Olorunfunmi Basorun, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, Otunba Dele Ajomale, Chief Rasak Okoya, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Mr. Ayo Opadokun, Prof. Idowu Sobowale, Cardinal James Odunmbaku, Alhaji Ganiyu Badmus, Mrs. Wonuola Folami, Yemi Cardoso, Chief Sam Bolarinde, Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ade Ipaye, who was the Master of Ceremony and Mohammed’s wife, Kudira Adeoti.

Urging the progressives to remain committed to change, Buhari said: “Let us agree to come together and give an alternative to Nigeria. We should consummate this merger and mobilise our constituencies.”

The CPC leader noted that Nigerians were eagerly awaiting the conclusion of the merger in readiness for the next elections, stressing that “nobody will want to rig because it will not pay.” Buhari commended the ACN for its successful convention in Lagos, assuring that the CPC and the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) will follow suit in Abuja and Zamfara State respectively on May 11.

Hailing the author, Buhari, who wrote the foreward to the book, applauded his single mindedness, intellectual capacity, hardwork, consistency and courage, adding that every school library in the country should have the book on its shelve.

Tinubu observed that the presentation of the book was timely, coming after the last convention of the APC, which has heralded its merger into the APC. Noting that the APC has a permanent place in history, the former Lagos State governor said: “Democracy, justice and liberty may move slowly, but when they gain momentum, nobody can stop them. That is why I talked about positive storm.

“With the APC, we will form a bigger party that will accomplish bigger things for Nigeria. This is a bigger project with an agenda for change. That was why ACN has made a sacrifice for the greater good. We should not call ourselves the opposition again. We are the progressives and government-in-waiting. Those in power only believe in what good governance oppose.

“We have witnessed their empty history. Let them be a witness for our fruitful one. The US State Department has been decrying their impunity and corruption. The presidential aides are blind people embellishing facts. They attack the messengers, rather than heeding the message. We do not oppose for the sake of it. We stand for democracy, fairness, justice, harmony, unity, the eradication of corruption. We oppose indifference to bad governance, unemployment and insecurity.

“Our overriding vision is to gain power at the centre for progressive change. The storm is here. That storm is a positive storm. APC is the storm that will sweep them away. It is time for those in power to go.”

Lauding Mohammed, who he described as a wise man and a one-man army for his sagacity, competence and commitment to the growth of democracy, Tinubu said that he has been issuing press releases with the rapidity of a machine gun and turned them into a weapon of truth.

Fashola, who welcomed the guests, recalled that he had succeeded Mohammed as Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, noting that the astute lawyer and politician performed well in office by setting up the logistics, which facilitated the success of his tenure.

He said the book has told the story of a party that has become yardstick for good government and governance.

Firing the salvo at the PDP, Fashola said: “A party is saying that there is no vacancy in the highest office in the land. Why are they organising elections then? There will be vacancy in 2015.”

Governor Aliyu frowned at late-coming to events, advising dignitaries to send representatives, if they cannot keep to time. He observed that the ceremony was rich in attendance by attracting tall people like Gen. Buhari and Speaker Ikuforiji and short people like Mallam el-Rufai and Dr. Ngige.

Replying Fashola, he said: “We are not saying that there will be no election. There will be election to give you the task to participate. We are not saying that there will be no vacancy. We are saying that you should work hard. I was the first party to pray for the success of the merger so that we will not take things for granted. There is the need for options in democracy. But we should not allow personal ambition to becloud the general interest.”

Aliyu clarified that his presence at the book presentation did not translate into defection from the PDP, stressing that he had deliberately asked the Niger State PDP chairman, Alhaji Mahmud Batanga, to accompany him to Lagos for the ceremony.

The governor cautioned against viewing issues of national importance from the prism of narrow partisan ship, adding that nation-building and development go beyond political partisanship.

He added: “As politicians, we are not up to 10 percent of the people and we decide the fate of all the people. We must listen to all perspectives.”

Applauding the role of the opposition, Aliyu said: “Lai Mohammed has been asking us to understand what Nigerian politics has been and what it will be. If you want to excel, you must have enemies that will put you on your toes. opposition is always there to help you to look at the other side of the coin.”

Osibajo praised Mohammed’s devotion to image making, he said that he has become the peoples’ publicity secretary.

Ipaye, who read Mohammed’s profile, said that as the country has proceeded on the fast lane to development, it should be remembered that the author is one of the engineers of the movement. He added: ‘He is a thinker, strategist and wise counselor.”

Other dignitaries at the ceremony included Dr. Remi Desalu, Dr. Wale Adebanwi, Hon. Omotilewa Aro-Lambo, Dr. Samuel Adedayo, Hakeem Fashinro, Dr. Leke Pitan, Prof. Abisogun Leigh, Jide Jimoh, Ayodele Adewale, Abiodun Mafe, James Faleke, Rotimi Agunsoye, Jide Sanwolou, Kaoli Olusanya, Segun Dawodu, Chris Ekwilo, Ademola Seriki, Femi Gbajabiamila, Yakubu Balogun, Kemi Nelson, Dele Belgore (SAN), Pastor Eze Iyamu, Chief Adedoyin, Sunday Adepoju, Yekini Alabi, Ismaila Tua, Bolaji Ariyoh, Ife Oyedele, Segun Babatope, Meriko Ebikebina, and Wale Ahmed.

  • Tinubu advises Jonathan to address issues

Tinubu advises Jonathan to address issues

Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu yesterday described the President Goodluck Jonathan administration as a “rudderless presidency”.

He rejected his description as a political liability by a presidential aide, Dr. Doyin Okupe, stressing that his achievement, as the former governor of Lagos State and party leader are impeccable.

A statement by Tinubu’s media aide, Mr. Sunday Dare, urged the President’s aide to address cogent issues, instead of attacking personalities.

The statement reads: “Nigerians, once again, are being entertained by the Abuja theater circus. Figures and numbers that translate to nothing for the ordinary Nigerian are being bandied as achievements. Their penchant for dancing naked in the market place is now commonplace.

“The small-minded media minstrels of Abuja are at it again. It is a curious thing. They call former Lagos Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari insignificant and are nothing to fear, yet they seem to spend so much of their time on them. Does the eagle fear the sparrow or does an elephant fear a blade of grass? Despite their huffing and puffing, they know they are not the eagle or the elephant. Deep in their hearts, they fear that the APC has the potential for change that they lack.

“Governor Tinubu and Gen. Buhari are flattered by the attention. But Nigerians must heed the warning signs about this government and its anti-people policies. If they would only do their work as they should, the opposition and indeed millions of Nigerians would have very little to say but to congratulate them. “Instead they chase after the opposition leaders like street kids running after a moving car. We have left them behind. They will soon be past history.

“They can’t let their record speak for itself because it will only say bad things about them. Nigerians today are saddled with a government that lacks the presence of mind and the discipline to serve the people. The cluelessness of the current government needs no announcement. Their incompetencies need no contestation. It is large in the policy somersaults, mis-speak and economic and security malaise now prevalent.

“Nigerians are currently saddled with a government asleep at the switch. This is a government engaged only in dynamic inactivity. Of motions and gyrations without moving Nigeria forward. Nigerians are eyewitnesses to history and will be the judge when the time comes. They are possessed by the greatest political fear of them all – not that people will mistake who they are but that the people truly know who they are.

“Thus, in a futile attempt, they seek to belittle the accomplishments of Governor Tinubu as governor of Lagos, they shoot themselves in the foot. There is concrete and verifiable evidence about the transformation of Lagos, a foundation laid by Governor Tinubu and his team. The Tinubu-Fashola plan for the transformation of Lagos has worked. And as members of the same party they had a coherent plan to develop Lagos State.

“Can they say the same thing about anything at the federal level? Everything they touch gets broken. They call what they are doing a transformation agenda. They seem to want to transform the nation into one big failure. Nigerians have endured this with grace and good humor. It is time for serious people with serious plans to address the serious problems we face.

“The Federal Government presides over failure after failure, yet they spend time criticizing the success that is Lagos. Tinubu and Fashola can walk anywhere in Lagos in peace and without an army to protect them. I wonder if they can make that claim about their leaders and the whole of Nigeria. No one needs a President on lock down in Aso Villa all the time, completely isolated from the people he governs.

“A leader who locks down every city he visits in Nigeria for security reasons is not our idea of a successful citizen friendly leader. There is no greater liability than such a presidency.”

  • Tinubu, Akande, ex-milads, others condole with Fayemi over deputy’s death

Tinubu, Akande, ex-milads, others condole with Fayemi over deputy’s death

National leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; the party’s National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande and former military administrators of Ogun, Ondo and Ekiti States, Rear Admiral Joseph Olasehinde, Rear Admiral Abiodun Olukoya, Commodore Kayode Olofinmoyin and Navy Captain Atanda Yussuf, stormed Ado Ekiti at the weekend to commiserate with Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi on the death of his deputy, Mrs Funmi Olayinka.

Also, a former Lagos State Commissioner for Special Duties, Chief Teju Philips, led some members of the Board of Keystone Bank to commiserate with the governor.

Speaking on the death of Mrs. Olayinka, Tinubu described it as devastating, adding that she lived beyond being a mere politician to a close family member “who cannot be replaced in our hearts.”

The ACN leader said Mrs Olayinka demonstrated so much commitment and hard work, which he said made her a model for what a deputy governor should be. He also noted that her support for the Governor Fayemi had culminated in the rapid transformation of Ekiti State.

The former governor of Lagos State, who added that the late deputy governor had written an indelible chapter in the history of Ekiti State, urged Governor Fayemi not to be distracted from pursuing the transformation agenda that has given the state a new face, saying it is the best way to immortalise her.

Tinubu assured that the late deputy governor would be immortalised. He was however silent on the specific way this would be done.

Tinubu described Olayinka as a committed and consistent woman; a trusted compatriot in the noble journey towards bringing about lasting changes in Ekiti State.

According to him, these virtues and others too numerous to mention made her death a devastating blow and would make her to live long in the memories of the residents of the state.

Tinubu said: “We are here to condole with the entire Ekiti people, not only the Governor who has demonstrated great leadership quality and equally partnered well with the late Deputy Governor, particularly the First Lady of the state, for such a devastating loss of a good partner that had been a model to the rest of the country.

“The late Deputy was a very devoted and highly committed team player. We have no choice but take solace in the belief that she has gone to rest and would ensure that the government of Ekiti State and all of us in our party together see that she is immortalised. We are very sad, but that is the mystery of the Almighty God.”

In his remarks, Chief Akande extolled the virtues of hard work and sacrifice which he said made Olayinka to stand out among other deputy governors, saying that the late deputy governor had six months ago attended a function abroad without any sign of the ailment and never shirked in discharging her duties during the period.

Akande lauded Olayinka for having lived a fulfilled life and never disappointed Ekiti State or her family in her life as a banker, politician and public servant.

Tinubu and Akande were accompanied by Governor Fayemi, Senator Babafemi Ojudu and the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Dr Adewale Omirin, to pay a condolence visit to the deceased’s parents, Pa and Madam Famuagun, as well as the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Rufus Adejugbe.

Also, four former military administrators-Oladehinde, Olukoya, Olofinmoyin and Yussuff, who visited Governor Fayemi, described the impact made by the late deputy governor as remarkable; saying that having read various comments by Governor Fayemi on the roles played by the late Olayinka, they could only say that the state had lost a rare gem.

The former military administrators said the transformation that the state had experienced under Fayemi and Olayinka were amazing. They urged the governor to forge ahead with the transformation agenda of the administration and ensure it is actualised.

Olayinka, aged 52, died of cancer on April 6 at St Nicholas Hospital, Lagos. She will be buried next Friday.

APC: plot against Buhari, Tinubu won’t stop us

Jonathan doesn’t give illegal directives, says Presidency

No threat can stop the merger of parties to kick out the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) said yesterday.

There is allegedly a presidential directive to stop the All Progressives Congress (APC) — the vehicle for the merger. But the ACN said the leadership of the party cannot be cowed by an executive order to jettison its resolve to rescue Nigeria democratically.

ACN said it was going ahead with the plan to unseat the PDP in 2015. But the Presidency denied that there was an order to frustrate any political group.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the ACN alleged a plot by the Presidency to cripple its National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s businesses.

Mohammed described the plot as an addition to the initial plan to discredit and silence outspoken opposition leaders, including Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) leader Gen Muhammadu Buhari.

“We will like to add that part of this plan is to hurt his (Tinubu) business interests, scare off most of his business partners and political associates, try to pin some activities of Boko Haram on him and generally go after the leading figures, including governors in the APC initiative,” Mohammed claimed in the statement.

He said any clampdown on the APC leadership would be of no consequence on the APC rescue mission, especially when Nigerians are clamouring for a change.

The statement reads: “Nigerians are yearning for change. Therefore, targeting our leaders won’t help the disappearing behemoth, whose so-called reconciliation efforts have even worsened its plight.

“Needless to say that every attempt or attack on perceived political opponents by the government and its apparatchiks will be revealed, contested and resisted.

‘’The leaders of APC know what they are up against and are mindful that the battle ahead may be rough and difficult, yet they are irrevocably committed to establishing a party that will sound the death knell of the bumbling PDP and bring development to Nigeria.”

According to the ACN, all the attempts being made to thwart the registration of the APC by some suspicious money bags were parts of the scripts from the seat of power and the highest echelon of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

It accused the leadership of the ruling party of abandoning governance for dirty politics, midway into the next general elections.

Commenting on a media report published yesterday, which alleged that a March 26 presidential directive was issued for everything to be done to frustrate the merger of opposition parties, the ACN said such move was expected.

It said: “ACN recalled that in a statement it issued on January 8, 2013, it alerted the nation to the desperate measures being taken by the PDP-led Federal Government to discredit and silence key opposition leaders, especially Tinubu and his CPC counterpart, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, as well as their political associates.

“The report confirmed what we already knew, including the sinister plan to stop Tinubu ahead of the 2015 elections.

“But there is also another plan, which is to ensure that elections either do not hold in 2015 or that they will hold under curfew.

“To achieve this, those who have now succumbed to a mortal fear of the APC are stoking the fire of violence across the country, either through incompetent handling of existing crisis or by instigating fresh ones.

“With the Northeast and the Northwest in the throes of violence, the Southwest is their next target in this regard, and we will reveal the full details of their shenanigans in due course.”

The party warned: “The do-or-die politics or violence for whatever reason will not spare anyone, including the instigators, just as constricting the democratic space will eventually stifle democracy.”
