Tinubu celebrates ex-Ogun deputy governor, Adesegun, at 70

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Prince Segun Adesegun, on his 70th birthday, praising his decades-long commitment to democratic ideals, progressive politics and public service.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday, the President joined family, friends and political associates in celebrating Adesegun, describing him as a dependable party stalwart and patriot whose contributions to Ogun State and the nation span student activism, legislative service and executive responsibilities.

Tinubu noted that the celebrant, who is currently an ambassador-designate, previously served Ogun State twice as Commissioner for Works and Housing and also as a legislator, before rising to the position of Deputy Governor, where he played a key role in governance and infrastructure development.

The President recalled Adesegun’s early leadership roots as a student leader in the 1970s at Obafemi Awolowo University, then known as the University of Ife, and said he had remained consistent in his political convictions since emerging as a frontline political actor in the 1990s.

Tinubu particularly highlighted Adesegun’s role in the pro-democracy struggle following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election won by the late MKO Abiola, noting that the Ogun-born politician risked his life alongside other progressives to defend the sanctity of the mandate.

“Ambassador-designate Adesegun’s patriotism and commitment to democracy were clearly on display when he defied all odds, along with some of us, to fight for the sanctity of the June 12 mandate of the late MKO Abiola,” the President said, adding that the former deputy governor had since remained steadfast in his pursuit of progressive and accountable governance.

The President further acknowledged Adesegun’s role in strengthening the All Progressives Congress, saying he contributed significantly to the party’s electoral successes in Ogun State and beyond since 2015.

Tinubu prayed for continued good health and long life for the former deputy governor and his family, wishing him more years of meaningful service to the nation.

Barau hails Tinubu for swift approval of military support to halt Benin coup attempt

The Deputy President of the Senate and First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Senator Barau Jibrin, has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for swiftly granting the request of the Benin Republic for Nigerian military assistance to foil a coup attempt in the neighbouring country.

The commendation followed Sunday’s announcement by soldiers under the Military Committee for Refoundation (CMR), who declared the removal of President Patrice Talon in a broadcast on the state-owned television station.

The swift intervention of the Nigerian Armed Forces played a leading role in foiling the coup and restoring law and order in the neighbouring country.

Senator Barau, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, commended President Tinubu for his swift response to the country’s request.

Describing Democracy as the best system of government, Senator Barau said military government has no place in the modern world’s scheme of things.

“I commend the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for swiftly acceding to the request of the Government of the Benin Republic, for Nigerian military intervention to foil the coup in the country.

“Military rule has no place in our society. Regardless of the situation, Democracy remains the best option for our subregion and continent. We must all work together to promote, defend, and make the system work based on our peculiarities,” he said.

Through the ECOWAS Parliament, he said that they will continue to promote legislative cooperation, democratic development, regional integration, and shared prosperity across West Africa.

“At the ECOWAS Parliament, the people’s parliament, our commitment to building a more integrated, stable, and prosperous West Africa is rock solid. We are collectively working to strengthen parliamentary diplomacy, foster unity among member states, and advance peace and security for the development of our region,” he said.
