Flying Eagles tipped to win 2018 World Cup

The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Gbenga Elegbeleye, has predicted the present Flying Eagles are poised to win Africa’s first World Cup in 2018 in Russia.

“These Flying Eagles are the best national team of Nigeria for the past 20 years and they are the team to win the 2018 World Cup in Russia for the first time for Africa,” declared Elegbeleye, when he hosted the team in Abuja on Tuesday.

“The coach of this team (Manu Garba) is a personal friend of mine and I remember 11, 12 years ago in my house in Akure, he told me we can win the World Cup but with a new team of youngsters.”

He added: “Everywhere this team goes, they win. This team is the pride of the entire Nigeria. And so I expect this team to win the U20 World Cup and then the main World Cup.

“You will be the greatest team in the world. Go to New Zealand and rule the world.

“And I know with discipline you can do it.”

Coach Manu Garba promised that the best Flying Eagles will target a first-ever U20 World Cup triumph.

“The best team will be at the World Cup and with God on our side, we can bring back the U20 World Cup for Nigeria and Africa,” he said.

“We’re a disciplined team and that was why we won the Fair Play trophy and won all Man of the Match Awards in the five matches we played in Senegal.”

Elegbeleye was later presented with the AYC and the Fair Play trophies by coach Manu and skipper Musa Muhammed.

Meanwhile, the new African U20 champions are to be treated to a lavish reception by the country’s President Goodluck Jonathan soon.

Director-general of the National Sports Commission, Gbenga Elegbeleye disclosed this when he received the coach Manu Garba-tutored side.

According to him, “It’s been my desire and that of our President to always produce the best sports men and women in all areas of our sporting life. In the past four years, Nigeria has fared well in almost all sporting activities within Africa and beyond.

“Mr. President through his special adviser on media has already assured the team that he will do everything possible to continue to support them just as he has always done to make sure that they go and win the world Cup in New Zealand.

“We at the NSC have the records and are only authorized to issues it at any time. This government remains the best so far judging from the number of laurels that has been won in just four years.”

  • Four tipped to replace Tukur

    Four tipped to replace Tukur

Four candidates are being tipped as likely successor to the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, if he is consumed by the ongoing crisis in the party.

The Northeast may, however, still retain the slot – in line with the party’s zoning formula.

The candidates favoured by some governors and anti-Tukur forces are ex-Governor of Bauchi State Adamu Mua’zu; a former Deputy National Secretary of the party, Dr. Musa Babayo; Nigeria’s former Ambassador to the United States, Alhaji Hassan Adamu(Wakilin Adamawa); and a former National Publicity Secretary of the party, Prof. Rufai Alkali.

Also, the anti-Tukur forces are seeking the disbandment of the parallel National Working Committee (NWC) as part of the ongoing reconciliation in the party.

According to sources, those against Tukur are still pushing ahead in their call for his removal.

A source said: “At least four candidates are on the card to succeed Tukur if the crisis in the party lingers. Any of these candidates can lead the party to victory in 2015.

“The merits of these candidates are already being sold to party leaders and governors, if it becomes necessary to effect leadership change.”

Another source added: “Some governors, NWC and BOT members are hoping that we won’t get to a point where we will change the party leadership. But if it is inevitable, we will choose any of these candidates.

“The ball is in Tukur’s court to bow to PDP members’ request to manage the party with fairness, equity and justice. He should stop being part of the problems of the party as the case in Adamawa State.

“Chief Tony Anenih’s BOT committee also has a lot to do to reconcile groups opposed to Tukur’s style of administration, which is like that of a sole administrator of the PDP.

“It is also believed that Tukur’s media outbursts have not helped matters.”

Meanwhile, moves are being made to dismantle the alleged parallel National Working Committee(NWC) being operated by Tukur.

The parallel NWC members are special advisers serving the National chairman.

A third source said: “As we prepare for the National Executive Committee meeting, governors and leaders want the disbandment of the so-called parallel NWC in the interest of cohesion in Tukur’s Executive.

“Members of the same parallel NWC caused the crisis of confidence between Tukur and the sacked National Secretary of the party, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

“Oyinlola incurred the wrath of Tukur’s unofficial special advisers because he refused to sign their letters of appointment based on his conviction that their appointments by the national chairman were illegal and were not known to PDP’s Establishment Manual.

“Tukur, at the inception of the current National Working Committee, forwarded names of 10 people to be appointed his special advisers. Oyinlola, however, refused to issue their letters of appointment and advised the national chairman against spending party funds on the special advisers.

“This was one of the causes of Oyinlola’s problem with Mallam Habu Fari, who operated in Tukur’s office for a few months with the nomenclature of Chief of Staff. Fari was later sacked by the national chairman to pave the way for smooth administration of the PDP national headquarters.

“The same parallel NWC was behind plans to ‘’clip the wings of state governors who had become too powerful.’’

“For instance, the National Legal Adviser has been rendered redundant as all his functions have been taken over by a legal advisor.”

  • OPERATION CRUSH KENYA Anichebe, Ameobi, Obi tipped Nigeria processing Sidney Sam’s document

OPERATION CRUSH KENYA Anichebe, Ameobi, Obi tipped Nigeria processing Sidney Sam’s document

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi is favourably disposed towards having Shola Ameobi, Victor Anichebe and Joel Obi in his plans for the March 23 game against Kenya in Calabar.

Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi could therefore be one of such players even though he stayed away from the Nations Cup in preference to his EPL club, but Keshi has already said he missed the big, experienced forward in South Africa.

“Honestly speaking, I missed Shola Ameobi (at the AFCON). In the game against Venezuela, he had a different presence in the locker room, he came in with this coaching ability and togetherness, when he talks to these boys they listen. This was the first time he was coming,” said the Eagles coach.

“This was what I was looking for on the pitch, somebody who could talk for me on the field, because I know what I did as a captain on the pitch. He was really, really ready to come, but what was on his contract denied him from coming.”

Other likely stars on the Eagles radar would be Inter Milan midfielder Joel Obi, who was ruled out of the AFCON as a result of a long-term muscle injury, as well as Everton striker Victor Anichebe, who has also been battling injuries. Nigeria are also processing the nationality switch of Bayer Leverkusen winger Sidney Sam.

The Big Boss has also said he will welcome more players who could add quality to his African champions.

Keshi is expected to name his squad for a 2014 World Cup qualifier at home to Kenya later this month, but he said he will always be on the lookout for additions to his team.

“We are open to fresh options for the team. We will allow additional good players in the team, those who can contribute positively to the team,” Keshi said.

“We will give opportunity to them as Nigerians to come and show what they can contribute to make the team better.”

  • Yusuf tipped to replace Ogunbote

    Yusuf tipped to replace Ogunbote

Ex-Pillars coach Salisu Yusuf has emerged as the first name to take over at Sunshine Stars after Gbenga Ogunbote sensationally resigned.

Ogunbote quit his post after he led the Akure to the semi-final of this year’s CAF Champions League.

He was also in charge when the club reached the last four of last year’s CAF Confederation Cup.

He cited contractual breaches by Sunshine as well as challenges on and off the pitch for his decision to throw in the towel.

Former Eagles assistant coach Yusuf has long been linked with Sunshine.

The Ex-FC Taraba coach has become the pretty bride in the off-season as he is also on the radar of Enyimba and newly promoted Nasarawa United.

The Zaria-born coach won Nigeria Premier League title with Kano Pillars 2008. He has also worked at Lobi Stars.
