GLO LEAGUE TITLE: Kwambe talks tough

Sunshine Stars  defender Solomon Kwambe has said his side will be a credible candidate for the Glo Premier League title.

The Akure Gunners ended the first stanza in 11th position on 27 points and will restart their second round campaign on home ground against bottom placed side, Nembe City.

The Akure-based side were dumped 0-1 by Bendel Insurance in the Federation Cup round of 64 tie.

Kwambe said his side were prepared to win a continental ticket for their teeming supporters as compensation for the shocking ouster from the ongoing Federation Cup competition.

“All I can say right now is that I’m ready and we as a team are prepared, anxiously waiting for the restart of the season so that we can achieve our aims.

“You know quite well we’re no more taking any part in this year’s Federation Cup competition, so we have to concentrate 100% on the league.

“Of course, the league title as well as continental ticket won’t be a bad idea to compensate our supporters for our failure to excel in the Federation Cup.

“Despite finishing a distant 11th position at the close of first stanza, we remain strong contenders for the league shield.

“The contest for the title will be challenging and stiff in the second term among the campaigners but I know we’ll be equal to the task.

“We have quality players in our fold and have resolved to give our best to ensure we achieve the lofty dream,” said the Super Eagles strongman to supersport.com.

Sunshine Stars are expected to commence the second round against Nembe City in Akure.

  • Djokovic wins Wimbledon title

    Djokovic wins Wimbledon title

Novak Djokovic won his second Wimbledon title and denied Roger Federer his record eighth by outlasting the Swiss player in five sets yesterday.

Djokovic wasted a 5-2 lead, and a match point, in the fourth set but held on for a 6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-4 Centre Court victory that returned the Serbian player to the No. 1 ranking.

It was Djokovic’s seventh Grand Slam title and broke a streak of three consecutive losses in major finals and in five of his past six.

In the last set, Djokovic broke in the final game with the help of four mistakes by Federer to seal the win.

After the players met at the net, Djokovic went to the middle of the court, knelt down and plucked out a piece of grass and ate it, similar to what he did in 2011 when he won his first title here.

Trailing 5-4 in the fourth set,Federer double-faulted to make it 30-30. He then put a backhand into the net to set up a championship point for Djokovic.

The 32-year-old Federer then hit a serve that was ruled out, but he challenged it and the Hawk-Eye replay showed that it hit the line for an ace — one of his 29 in the match. Federer went on to break in the next game before forcing a fifth set.

“I was hoping that Roger was going to miss the first serve, but that didn’t happen,” Djokovic said. “It rarely happens. That’s why he has 17 Grand Slams and he’s been the most successful player ever, because in important moments, he comes up with his best shots and top game.”

Djokovic said it was difficult to stay focused heading into a deciding set.

“Of course, after dropping a fourth set, it wasn’t easy to regroup and compose myself and find that necessary energy to win the fifth,” Djokovic said. “I don’t know how I managed to do it.”

Watching yesterday’s final from the Royal Box were Prince William and his wife Kate, David Beckham and actors Bradley Cooper, Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Hemsworth.

    …Dedicates title to first coach

An emotional Novak Djokovic held aloft the Wimbledon trophy then dedicated his triumph to his future wife, their unborn baby and his former coach Jelena Gencic, who died last year.

Djokovic overcame Roger Federer in an epic five-set final that will live long in the memory, with the Serbian wasting a championship point in the fourth set and also seeing a 5-2 advantage squandered in that set before finally winning his second Wimbledon crown in three hours and 56 minutes.

“I would like to dedicate this to my future wife, and our future baby,” said Djokovic, to cheers from the Centre Court crowd. Djokovic had announced his engagement to Jelena Ristic earlier this year and reports suggest they could marry this week.

“I’m going to become a father soon, I’m still preparing for that, it’s a great joy in life.”

After also making a dedication to his team – which includes coach Boris Becker, himself a three-time winner at Wimbledon – Djokovic concluded his speech by speaking about Gencic, his first ever coach.

“Last but not least I want to dedicate this title to my first coach, who taught me the basics of tennis shots and behaviour and everything I know about tennis, Jelena Gencic. She passed away last year. This is for her.” He then held the trophy to the sky and kissed it.

Djokovic moves clear of a group of players including John McEnroe and Mats Wilander on seven career grand slam titles, and joins a new group on eight – Fred Perry, Ken Rosewall, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl and Andre Agassi. Beaten finalist Federer remains the all-time leader with 17.

Mikel surrenders: Hand EPL title to Man United

Mikel Obi has conceded the EPL crown to Manchester United, while his club Chelsea and Manchester City will battle for second place.

Chelsea star Mikel has admitted Manchester United have their hands around the trophy already and that only a miracle could see them surrender it.

Mikel said United’s 12-point gap ahead of second-placed City is massive and Chelsea’s title hopes suffered a major body blow when they lost 2-0 at City on Sunday.

“To be realistic I don’t think anyone will be putting money on us or City to win this title,” Mikel said.

“You don’t know what can happen in football but at the moment it’s a one-horse race. It’s all about United because they are doing so well now. They have been the best team so far this season, even when they are not playing well, they always find a way to get three points at stake.”

Mikel also admitted a frustration Chelsea did not maintain their early charge for the championship and their ongoing managerial merry-go-round didn’t help.

“We started so well, but then we had a little bit of a dip. Then there were a few changes here and there and changes take time to gel. We just have to keep working and respect the manager. He’s the boss and we just have to follow his instructions and do what he wants us to do,” he said.

  • British High Commission denies Commonwealth boxing champion visa to defend title

British High Commission denies Commonwealth boxing champion visa to defend title

A Nigerian boxer’s dream of defending his title in Liverpool, United Kingdom, is threatened by the British High Commission’s refusal to grant him and his trainer entry visas, reports OLUKOREDE YISHAU

IF nothing happens between now and March 8, Kareem Yakubu Olaitan’s dream of defending his Commonwealth Super-flyweight boxing title will not be realised. Reason: the British High Commission has refused him and his trainer, Isiaka Olatunji, visas to enter the United Kingdom. This is despite the fact that their applications were supported with letters from the promoter of the bout, Frank Warren Promotions, the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control and the Chairman of the Commonwealth Boxing Council, Phillip Brook Smith.

The letter from Warren Frank Promotion shows that Olaitan is to defend his Commonwealth Super-flyweight title against Paul Butler at the Liverpool Olympia, Liverpool, UK on March 8. It also shows that the promoter will foot the bills for food, accommodation and round trip airfares for the team.

The letter reads: “Frank Warren Promotions will meet all of the food and accommodation expenses for the duration of their team’s time in the UK as well as the round trip airfares. They will depart Lagos, Nigeria on Monday, 4th March, 2013 and return from the United Kingdom on Sunday, 9th March ,2013.

“During their stay in the United Kingdom, they will be residing at Liverpool City Centre, Vernon Street, Liverpool, 122AY.”

Smith, in a document supporting Olaitan’s application, pleaded with the High Commission to issue the visa.

He said: “I confirm that the above mentioned Mr. Olaitan is the current Commonwealth Super flyweight champion under his ring name of Yaqub Kareem. He has contracted with licensed British Boxing Board of Control promoter Frank Warren to defend his title at the Olympia Stadium, Liverpool of Friday, 8th March, 2013 against current British Super-flyweight Champion Paul Better.

“In order to fulfil this contractual obligation, it will be necessary for a UK entry visa to be granted to Mr. Olaitan and to his Trainer/Second Mr. Olatunji.

“I confirm that Mr. Warren is a licensed promoter of over 30 years standing who has promoted some of the major Championship contests in British during this time, including those featuring well-known boxers, such as Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Nigel Benn, Maseem Hamed, Richard Hatton and very many others.

“The hotel, transport, food, training and accommodation requirements of both named gentlemen will be taken care of by Mr. Warren’s organisation, which will also be responsible for returning both to the airport after the contest date.

“On behalf of the CBC, l kindly request that you deal with both visa applications as expeditiously as possible in order that Mr. Olaitan (and his Trainer/Second) can arrive in the UK with sufficient time to refresh and prepare himself to enable him to take part in this contest, which will be broadcast live on the subscription TV channel Box Nation.”

But the High Commission was not convinced by the recommendations made for Olaitan by the Commonwealth Boxing Council, Frank Warren Promotions and others. It said it was not convinced the boxer had enough ties with Nigeria that would compel him to return after the fight. It said the boxer, despite the fact that he was being sponsored for the trip, must also be personally qualified to receive an entry visa.

The embassy’s rejection letter reads: “In order to be able to make a decision on whether or not to grant you entry clearance in this category, l have taken into account your stated circumstances in Nigeria, the reasons for your visit and your proposed travel arrangements. You have declared that you are self-employed as a tailor with no fixed income and that you have one child to support. You also state that you are a boxer and wish to defend your boxing title in the United Kingdom. Whilst I acknowledge your statement that your proposed trip to the UK is to be sponsored by your sponsor, I must take into account your personal socio-economic circumstance in Nigeria when reaching my decision. The Immigration Rules require me to be satisfied that you personally qualify for a visa. None of the money being used to fund your trip is your own. I am not satisfied that you have sufficient economic ties to Nigeria to suggest you would not seek to remain in the UK if admitted as a visitor now. Given the statements you have made and the documentary evidence you have presented to support your application, l am not satisfied that your circumstances in Nigeria, coupled with your reasons for wishing to travel to the UK, are such that you have shown your intentions are as stated or that you intend to leave the UK at the end of proposed visit.”

The Nigerian Boxing Board of Control, in a statement, yesterday urged the embassy to rescind its decision.

The Board said the High Commission’s decision was capable of derailing Olaitan’s career.

It said: “With this denial of entry visa to Yakubu Kareem and his trainer, Isiaka Olatunji, the implication is that come the 8th of March, 2013, the British boxer Paul Butler, who happens to be the challenger, would be declared as the new champion without throwing a punch.”

The secretary of the Board, Mr. Remi Aboderin, said: “This is a great injustice and we plead with the sport minister/ministry to please help address this issue before it is too late. The High Commission keeps denying applicants on the basis of the applicants not having sufficient ties or not being economically sound. This boxer needs to be allowed to travel and defend his title; if he is allowed to travel for this fight alone, he stands to earn $7,500.”

    Ameobi eyes Europa league title

: Predicts hostile  away tie against Metalist Thursday

Super Eagles forward and Newcastle United ace Shola Ameobi insists that they want to go as far as they can in the Europa League.

The European competition is still the last major trophy Newcastle won when it was the Fairs Cup in 1969.

The Magpies drew 0-0 at home with Metalist Kharkiv in the first leg of the last 32 tie last week and head to Ukraine for the return leg on Thursday.

The Nigerian international, who missed out on the Super Eagles’ Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) party at the last minute, feels that Newcastle can have a good shot at winning the trophy again. He said: “This is a big tournament. It’s a European competition, and we want to get as far as we can.

“We’re not behind in the tie, which is good. They haven’t scored an away goal. The clean sheet’s always a nice one to have. We have to go over there and be on top of our game to win this tie.

“I imagine it’ll be quite a hostile atmosphere over there. It’s going to be a really difficult game for us.

“You could see they’re a really good footballing side – they could open us up.

“We have to make sure we’re tight first and foremost, and get an away goal. That could prove decisive for us.”

Ameobi, who was part of Nigeria’s preparation for AFCON 2013 which the Super Eagles won, missed the final cut after a clause in his contract with Newcastle revealed he could not feature in the continental event without an express permission from the manager.

The situation worsened because team mate Demba Ba was on his way out of Newcastle and the Toons feared that his exit could compound the club’s striking problems with Ameobi off to South Africa..

    •Restates confidence in Keshi crew

DIRECTOR General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Dr Patrick Ekeji, was the surprise guest Friday evening at one of the work out of the national team ahead of the international friendly against Venezuela on Wednesday in Miami, the United States.

Ekeji, who is a former national team skipper and coach, declared at the session that he was impressed by the modern day training techniques of the technical crew of the Super Eagles and wishes that all the sessions be recorded for review on a daily basis as that will help players and officials know areas that mistakes have been made.

He said Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdulahi and President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan are committed to the team excelling at the African Nations Cup, and therefore support for the team will not be lacking, declaring that it was actually the Minister that sent him to monitor proceedings at the national team.

“I believe that we have a team that can win the Nations Cup in South Africa and we equally have a technical crew that can excel with the team and support from government is there, so there is nothing that should stop us from bring the Afcon 2013 trophy home,” he said.

  • Chibuike keen on league title

    Chibuike keen on league title

John Chibuike says he has remained confident in helping his club beat Molde for the Norwegian league title as Rosenborg move to second place on the table with just two points differencein their positions.

Chibuike who has been given the greenlight by Super Eagles Stephen Keshi, believes that the Rosenborg team are good for the title and ready to declare war against their leader to claim the league.

“I respect Molde a lot, they have shown technicality this season but we won’t fold our hands for the title,” said Chibuike.

“On paper, they are considered the favourites, but we are also a good side and good enough for the title. Our last game gave us more confident ahead of Molde’s clash for the title.”

“I was not part of the Rosenborg team that won it two seasons ago and I want to win it with them now. I am back to my best, I am ready to give it all both in terms of assist and goal scoring.”

“Of course, we are still on course in Europa Cup, we lost to Bayern Leverkusen, a painful one but I enjoyed myself and it gives me another exposure for the next game.”

“As a matter of fact, I am looking forward to victorious season here in Norway and I believe the dream will come.” I am eager to prove than I am doing and I can tell the world excited I am to hit the top gong.”
