Amusan speaks  on starting  season with sprint races

World record holder in the 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan,  has defended  the decision  to start the season in the sprint, saying  100m dash would help her stability  as soon as she moved to her favourite, hurdles.

Amusan began  the season on a lukewarm note fuelling speculations that  she   may find it  difficult to return to her ebullient self.

But Amusan sent a powerful message to the athletics world on Sunday night as she stormed to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2025 Rabat Diamond League, clocking a stunning 12.45 seconds to win the race in a Season Best (SB) and further  broke the Meeting Record (MR) of 12.51 seconds set by American Brianna McNeal in 2018.

The victory  reaffirmed her status as one of the leading contenders ahead of the World Championships in Tokyo.

Dutch hurdler Nadine Visser came in second with 12.67s, while Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska followed in third at 12.69s.

Following the race, an elated Amusan shared insight into the adjustments that brought her back to peak form.

“More hurdles practice, cos I have been doing more sprinting. It was after the first two Diamond League meetings, I knew I had to go back to doing more hurdle drills. Two weeks in, I can tell the difference.”

The 28-year-old Nigerian entered Rabat with much to prove after a stuttering start to her 2025 season. Her planned opening at the World Athletics Relays in China was derailed after Nigeria withdrew from the event. In her first two Diamond League races — in Xiamen and Keqiao — Amusan finished fourth, running 12.74s and then improving to 12.66s.

The hurdles event was not part of the Doha Diamond League meet, leaving Rabat as Amusan’s crucial opportunity to reignite her season — and she seized it with both hands.

Tobi Amusan breaks, set new record at Diamond League Meet

Tobi Amusan stormed to victory in the women’s 100-meter hurdles at the Diamond League meet in Rabat, Morocco, delivering a commanding performance that signaled a strong return to form.

The 28-year-old Nigerian star clocked a season-best 12.24 seconds, smashing the previous meet record of 12.51 seconds set by Brianna McNeal. The win not only handed Amusan her first major triumph of the 2025 season but also reasserted her position among the world’s elite hurdlers.

Her road to this moment, however, hasn’t been smooth. Amusan opened her Diamond League campaign in May with back-to-back fourth-place finishes in Xiamen and Shanghai, showing flashes of form but missing the podium. Earlier, in March, she claimed a comfortable victory at Velocity Fest 16 in Jamaica, although against a relatively modest field.

This latest win in Rabat marks a turning point following a frustrating end to her 2024 season, when she fell short of the final at the Paris Olympics—an uncharacteristic stumble on the biggest stage.

Reflecting on her performance in Rabat, Amusan attributed her success to refinements in her training, emphasizing that sharper execution was key to her record-breaking run.

“More hurdles practice, because I have been doing more sprinting. It was after the first two Diamond League meetings, I knew I had to go back to doing more hurdle drills,” she said.

In March, she won Velocity Fest 16 in Jamaica, running against a weaker line-up of hurdlers.

The latest victory opens a clean chapter for Amusan, following the disappointing end to her 2024 athletics season, during which she failed to make the final of the women’s 100m hurdles at the Paris Olympics.

After last season, Amusan began training with Racers Track Club, which is led by Glen Mills, the former coach of the legendary Usain Bolt.

Speaking on her triumph in Rabat, Amusan credited her training routine with improving her execution in Morocco.

“More hurdles practice, because I have been doing more sprinting. It was after the first two Diamond League meetings, I knew I had to go back to doing more hurdle drills,” she said.
