Police arrest 10 over toddler’s murder in Lagos Shrine

    …Arrest Badoo suspect

The Lagos State Police Command Wednesday said it has arrested 10 persons in connection with the death of a four-year-old girl, who was sacrificed in a shrine at Iwaya, Yaba.

The toddler was found dead at midnight, 12 hours after she was declared missing by her parents on Tuesday.

According to the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Suleiman Taiwo, their daughter and two of her siblings had gone to the mosque by 1pm to pray for the day.

Although her siblings returned after the prayers, the little girl was nowhere to be found, prompting the parents to raise an alarm and a search party was formed.

Her corpse was later found at midnight at the shrine behind the house by the search party,  with her neck slashed with a knife, after she was used as a human sacrifice.

The distraught parents then bundled the corpse to the Sabo Police Station where they met the divisional police officer on duty.

Confirming the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said arrests have been made and 10 persons are presently in police custody.

He said: “The DPO Sabo alerted me that one Suleiman Taiwo and wife came to the station with the dead body of their four-year-old daughter.

“Upon questioning, they said the deceased with her two siblings went to pray at the mosque by 1pm and wasn’t seen since then. It was in the course of the search that they found the deceased by a shrine where Ogun is worshipped near their house. Her throat was slashed.

“We have seen the murder knife when we got there by 4am. We have arrested 10 persons and they are in our custody for interrogation. We are not saying they killed the child but there is a kind of conspiracy in the matter.

“We will question all of them. The area is densely populated. Seems like these days, people have thrown their morals into the dustbin because I don’t know what a four-year-old child has done to be murdered.

“The shrine has been in that chomping for a long time and if it’s not a conspiracy of silence, then the occupants must have known that human sacrifices are made in that shrine because this is not the first time such has happened.”

In another development, 28-year-old Ahmed Adeleke allegedly attacked 17-year-old Deborah Olaniyan with a grinding stone inside Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Orioke, Irapada Parish, Agbowa in Ikorodu.

Also confirming this, Owoseni said items recovered include one grinding stone, a blood stained white garment and handkerchiefs in white, red and blue colours.

He said: “Although the suspect claimed to be a member of the church, investigations revealed that he was of the Islamic faith and not a Christian.”

Meanwhile, he said the command also in implementation of its crime prevention strategies arrested seven persons suspected to be cultists in Agbowa and Obalende area of the state with tools of violence.

“One UTC axe and a cutlass were recovered from them. The command once again appeal to members of the public to desist from taking laws into their hands as anyone caught will be made to face the full wrath of the law.”

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested Suleiman Seidu, 33, for attempting to kidnap a two year-old boy, Chimdi Udwu, in Owode , Ogun State.
This followed an intelligence report by the decoy team of the squad that Seidu contracted two people to help him carry out the operation. A source said for more than two weeks, a member of the team, posing as an accomplice, was exchanging information with the suspect.

Seidu said the ransom was N10 million, which the parents would be able to afford.
A RRS informant said: “I knew it was going to boomerang if I conceal the information and not inform the police.
“Then, I called one of my friends who lives in Lagos and explained the situation to him.
It was my friend who told me to come to Lagos to inform the RRS, which I eventually came the following day to report the case at its headquarters in Lagos.”
Seidu, who confessed to the crime, said he wanted to kidnap the boy because his mother was ill.
In his confessional statement, he said: “I have been on the trail of the boy and his parents. I conceived the idea to kidnap him because my mother is ill and I need money.
“I wanted to demand for N10 million and if his parents cannot afford it, I can at least get N3million.
“I just relocated to the area and I am not familiar with it. Then, I thought of contracting someone who knows the environment very well and would make the job easy.
“I had been watching the movement of the parents for about two weeks.
“What I devised was to kidnap the boy whenever he is being taken to school and escape on a waiting bike.
“I planned to keep him with me in my house and threaten his parents.”

During the search, they discovered the severed wrist of an adult human being, ladies’ underwear and children’s items near a bungalow, 35 metres away from the venue.

Upon approaching the building, two persons sighted near the premises claimed they did not see a toddler.

It was gathered that later in the day, Ogundele’s uncle returned to the building, forced the door open, where he saw strange things.

Following surveillance of the building, a commercial motorcycle operator who visited the building was arrested and handed over to the police at the Lafenwa Divisional Police Headquarters, Abeokuta.

The Nation visited the building believed to owned by a herbalist,  Olasile Ifayemi, and witnessed vandalising of the over seven room bungalow,  desecration of his shrine and destruction of over a dozen pots of horrifying fetish objects.

The palpably bewildered residents said they never knew that a young herbalist lived in their midst and runs a ritualists’ den in the neighbourhood.

Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), police battled to control the crowd which was bent on torching the building.

The 26-year-old fashion designer and mother of the missing child, Elizabeth, said she was preparing to attend the ceremony when she discovered that her son has disappeared.

According to her, during the search she saw two young men in a building adjacent to the Osunlekes’ house and asked them if they saw her son, which they denied.

She said while walking away, she instinctively looked back and saw the two men making strange signals to each other which prompted some women to storm the building but they scared the women away by stripping themselves naked.

But before the men got to the building, the occupants had fled. But one of them who returned later was apprehended and kept in police custody.

“I started searching for my son, and searched a new bungalow where I saw two men sitting outside the house. I asked if they saw my boy, but they looked at each other and replied no.

“As I turned away, they started laughing.  I searched behind the house where I saw many fetish objects. I quickly turned back and I couldn’t find the young men again, so I called my husband Daniel and he reported to the police.”

Police Commissioner Abdulmajid Ali said investigation has begun.

He said: “I want to make it clear to the people that I am here to work and reduce crime.

“The site that was discovered has no relationship with the boy and other human parts found there.
