  • Obaseki woos voters with impactful projects in Uromi

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has called on residents in Esan North-East Local Government Area to join the progressives by voting for candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming general elections.

The governor, who made the call while addressing the party’s supporters at a campaign rally in Uromi on Monday, thanked the people for their support.

He said he has executed impactful projects that have positively touched the lives of Edo people in the past two years.

He promised that he would work on Uzea Road and other roads in the area, noting, “There is still much to do for the people especially in the area of road construction, providing potable water, jobs, and electricity for the people of Uromi. I will do this and more, please vote for our candidates to enable us have representatives in Abuja that will join hands with us to fast-track development in the area.”

Obaseki reiterated his respect for tradition, which he said informed his decision to reinstate the Royal Father, the Ojuromi of Uromi, Anselm Eidonojie, to his position as the paramount ruler of Uromi to further enhance unity and development in the area.

“Not minding that late Tony Anenih was from the opposition party, he was given a state burial as an elder statesman. We love our people and all we require from you is to vote for candidates of our party, the APC, to sustain the development in the state and in the country,” he added.

Chairman, Edo State Chapter of APC, Barr. Anselm Ojezua, thanked residents in the area for their support for the APC, urging them to cast their votes for the party so as to benefit more from the Governor Obaseki’s administration.

Among APC candidates seeking the mandate of the people in the forthcoming general elections, include, Hon. Joseph Ikpea, APC House of Representatives candidate for Esan South-East and Esan North-East Federal Constituency seat; Hon. John Inegbedion, APC senatorial candidate for Edo Central; Hon. Frank Okiye, APC State House of Assembly (EDHA) candidate for Esan North Constituency I; and Hon. Emma Okoduwa, APC House of Assembly candidate for Esan North Constituency II.

  • Tony Anenih: The end of an era

When beggars die, there are no comets seen; the heavens themselves blaze forth the death of princes.”-Williams Shakespeare

The 17th century English poet and playwright, remarkably one of the greatest wordsmiths that ever lived, must have penned the enduring lines with the likes of the political gladiator, inimitable party administrator and aficionado, Chief (Dr) Anthony Akhakon Anenih, the Iyasele of Esanland, in mind.

Anenih’s demise on October 28, 2018, at the age of 85, together with the surfeit of profound tributes that have trailed it, perfectly fits into Shakespeare’s contemplation and summation of death in its nuances.

Indeed, the observance of burial rites for Anenih is, essentially, a celebration of his life and times; and, it reminds us of how our shared humanity is daily discounted and the compelling obligation to always be ready for our respective exit.

John Donne put it succinctly in his Meditation XV11: “Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.” Anenih’s death diminishes me. It diminishes many others whose paths crossed his and whose lives he touched with his eleemosynary acts.

The Iyasele defined his eon with the magnitude of his humanity and politics, a trade that he plied for about four decades, until that luminous epoch came to an abrupt end on that fateful Lord’s day. But he left his indelible imprints clearly stamped on the nation’s political landscape both as a strategist and tactician par excellence. His political exertions were quite incredible so much so that his associates and those in the other camps had different perceptions of his persona.

To his admiring loyal followers, Anenih was a leader who could be relied upon to attend to their socio-political and economic frailties and needs.  But those in the other camps, acting in cahoots with their satellites in the media, successfully hung on him “Mr. Fix it”, a sobriquet he somewhat deprecated because of its connotative usage. But the conspirators succeeded in using it to denote their preconceived negative imageries and narratives about him.

But providence gave him a second chance in 2015, after he survived an emergency open-heart surgery, to deploy the medium of his autobiography titled, “My Life and Nigerian Politics”, which was presented to the public in 2016, to clear some of the erroneous perceptions, misconceptions and misconstructions by members of the public about his politics, philosophy and persona. He used the occasion to announce his withdrawal from politics as there were no more points to prove, according to him.

That intersection, spanning three years, had also given him the opportunity to sort out so many other things, especially spiritual: rededicating his life to God, reconciling with those that he offended and those who offended him through unsolicited and unconditional forgiveness. A devout Catholic, it was very clear that he was prepared to meet with his creator, having run his race and completed his course.

But to be clear, Anenih had been somewhat prepared long time ago for his transition to the celestial realm as validated by his decision in 2001 to build his Mausoleum, his final resting place, where he would be interred upon his death, in his country home in Uromi.  That is the place his remains will be buried today after the Funeral Mass at the St. Anthony Catholic Cathedral. The interment will be witnessed by members of his immediate family only.

A political icon, he remains a dependable leader, even in death, to his loyal political followers. To the best of his ability, he reciprocated their loyalty with greater loyalty and political rewards, which he selflessly dispensed. He was an apostle of “101 percent loyalty”; and, he was exemplary on that score.

Anenih was consistent and persistent to the end in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) even in the face of treachery by some associates. This was one of the attestations by former President Goodluck Jonathan at the Requiem Mass and a session of Tributes held on Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at the Ecumenical Centre in Abuja.

His voyage into the nation’s cloak-and-dagger politics began in 1979 as a member and, subsequently, Chairman of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in the old Bendel State. He was instrumental to the victory of Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia as governor in 1982. At the time, he had just retired as Commissioner of Police and was tending to his successful private businesses.

Anenih would later, in 1991, as National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), work for the victory of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun as governor of Edo State.  He repeated the same feat with the victory of Chief Lucky Igbinedion as governor in 1999 and 2003. But the 2007 governorship election in Edo marked the turning point. It was one of the very few political battles that he lost irretrievably.

It is important to underscore the pan-Nigerian outlook of Anenih’s politics, which made him detribalised. In 1982, he played a key role in the election of Alhaji Shehu Shagari as president for a second term, which was cut short by a military coup; in 1993, as National Chairman of the SDP, he led the presidential electioneering of the SDP that culminated in Chief MKO Abiola’s June 12 victory that was annulled.

Anenih’s role in the 1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011 presidential elections was writ large.  It produced the victory of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Dr Goodluck Jonathan respectively. Some of his single-minded and surefooted assertions such as “there is no vacancy in Aso Rock” helped to reinforce his élan as a political strategist and tactician.

At the level of pragmatic administrative savoir faire, Anenih, as Minister of Works and Housing from 1999 to 2002, availed Edo State his influence in government by  repairing the critical Benin by-pass that has since greatly helped to ease the perennial traffic gridlock in Benin City.  He also repaired the Benin-Asaba road and the Benin-Warri road.

In recognition of his immense contribution to party administration and success of PDP-controlled federal government, he was conferred with the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR). In death, he holds the records of being Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP twice from 2004 to 2007 and from 2013 to 2015.  He was also appointed twice as Chairman of the Board of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) from 2009 to 2011 and from 2012 to 2015.

A holder of many chieftaincy titles and honorary doctorate degrees from some Nigerian universities, the narrative of Anenih’s rise from grass to grace remains a source of inspiration to those who share with him similar socio-economic circumstances that he overcame in his quest for success in life, which God made possible through the right connection.

On the occasion of his 80thbirthday in Abuja in 2013, he told the quality audience that the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua was the person that God used to position him in Nigerian politics. He wept as he recognised and appreciated the presence of Hajia Binta, the wife of General Shehu Yar’Adua, at the venue of the birthday reception.

PDP condoles Anenih over demise of wife, son

  • PDP BoT chairman cautions Anenih on impeachment comment

The chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Walid Jibrin has cautioned his predecessor, Chief Tony Anenih, over his statement on the alleged impeachment threat against President Muhammadu Buhari.

Anenih had in a letter to the chairman of PDP caretaker committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, urged him to warn the party members in the Senate over an alleged threat to impeach Buhari.

But Jibrin said Anenih’s warning was misplaced, saying there was no such threat from the PDP senators.

At a meeting of PDP BoT members in Abuja on Monday, Jibrin cautioned elders and members of the party to be mindful of their utterances, particularly about issues relating to the polity.

The BoT chairman said the statement by the Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, and other senators refuting the impeachment threat should be enough to put the matter to rest.

He enjoined the PDP caucus in the National Assembly to play politics of issues instead of focusing on individuals.

A former Minister of Finance, Mallam Adamu Ciroma, who hosted the BoT members in his Abuja residence, urged politicians to always pursue causes that could promote the political stability of the nation.

Ciroma observed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is already making the same mistakes made by the PDP made and charged the party to brace up to the task of correcting such mistakes.

He said,”Just before the last elections and when we saw the trend of event, I warned members of the PDP to prepare themselves for whatever eventuality that may come.

“Today, PDP didn’t lose and APC didn’t win because APC has a lot to do. When you talk about politics you talk about PDP. When you talk about politics people, you talk about PDP as If APC does not exist. So far APC is not playing the right role.

“APC will make a lot of mistakes and PDP must be ready to put things right and all of you must be ready to contribute, participate and get involved for the interests of the ordinary Nigerians.”

The meeting was attended by a former President of the Senate, Chief Adolphus Wabara; his erstwhile Deputy, Ibrahim Mantu; and a former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana.

Others are – Jibrin, Senator Stella Omu, Taminu Turaki and Air Commodore Dan Suleiman (rtd), among others.

  • Why I forgave Oshiomhole – Anenih

Why I forgave Oshiomhole – Anenih

Former Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Tony Anenih, said he has forgiven Governor Adams Oshiomhole because his immediate health challenges made him to see the need to rise above politics and embrace peace with all men.

Chief Anenih noted that his medical experience made him to decide to forgive all those who offended him.

Anenih spoke for the first time publicly since the last general elections at the 10th Anniversary of St Anthony’s Catholic Church, where Governor Oshiomhole and other prominent members were given award for services to the Church.

The former Minister of Works who referred to Oshiomhole as his son said, “I want to say this, it is not because Adams is here. Last night, I was telling my wife that I met Adams in the church, and with my immediate medical experience, I have decided to forgive all those who offended me. And I specifically mentioned Adams.

“Adams, without you saying it, I have forgiven you. As you said when you were in labour, as President, you were my son and you know it. You came into politics and you remain my son. So, the common cook that used to cook ogbono soup for us is still there.”

Governor Oshiomhole urged the church to reward those who pay widows mite to build the church rather than wealthy individuals.

Oshiomhole praised the Catholic Church for bringing people of different political persuasions together under one roof for the Church programme.

“For me, the church has caused all of us to reunite in the State. So, I reunite with my daddy Chief Tony Anenih and several other PDP leaders and APC leaders. And the Catholic Church brought together the national Chairman of APC sitting side-by-side with the national leader of PDP.

“May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ continue to moderate our actions and remind us of our oneness, of our commonality and of our shared commitment to work together to uplift our state and our great nation.”

  • 2015: Nigeria must move forward in unity – Anenih

2015: Nigeria must move forward in unity – Anenih

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Tony Anenih, has said that Nigeria must remain united during and after the general election, regardless of the nation’s existing religious, regional and ethnic fault lines.

In a statement he issued on Tuesday, Anenih urged Nigerians to keep moving forward in unity, even as he acknowledged national and international concerns about the ability of Nigeria to conduct free, fair, credible and peaceful elections.

He said: “While I acknowledge that these concerns are not without foundation, I have no reservations whatsoever in assuring my fellow Nigerians that, whatever the odds may be, Nigeria will keep moving forward in unity.

“As the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, I am unwavering in my belief that the unity and advancement of our country is better protected by the PDP than by any other party.

“In the past four presidential elections, many of you agreed with me and voted our party to victory. For this privilege you’ve repeatedly given our party to steer the ship of state since our nation’s return to democracy in 1999, I thank you once more.

“I am also calling on all Nigerians to once again vote the PDP in 2015. It is a matter of verifiable fact that the PDP, besides faithfully discharging its foremost duty to Nigeria of sustaining a stable and functional state, has recorded many achievements in Agriculture, Aviation, Education, Road, Rail, Industrialization, Women and Youth Empowerment and many other sectors.”

Anenih, who is the National Campaign Adviser of the PDP presidential campaign organisation, assured that if re-elected, the PDP-led Federal Government under President Goodluck Jonathan would build more on the achievements on ground.

    Anenih, Lamido meet in Dutse

Indication that President Goodluck Jonathan may have finally dumped Vice President Namadi Sambo for Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, emerged on Tuesday when the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Tony Anenih, held a closed- door meeting with the governor at the state’s presidential lodge in Dutse.

The meeting was attended by some members of the PDP, including the party’s National Vice Chairman, North West, Amb. Ibrahim Musa Kazaure.

The PDP BoT chairman while speaking with journalists at the Dutse international Airport, shortly after the meeting, said, “I came to see my brother, who is also the state governor – Sule Lamido.

“What we have discussed in our meeting is not for tomorrow newspapers.  Sule Lamido is a party loyalist and he deserves all privileges in the party.”

Anenih, who declined to comment on speculations that the party would replace Sambo with the governor, added, “Sule Lamido is a matured leader. This my third visit to Jigawa this year and we have not seen any problem.”

  • Dame Patience as the new PDP fixer

Dame Patience as the new PDP fixer

That title of ‘The Fixer’, used to be the patent right of Chief Tony Anenih, the indefatigable henchman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Time was when he could determine and declare the next occupant of Aso Rock Presidential Villa about three years before the next election. And woebetide any governor or aspirant who was not in his good books; he or she would be as good as a non-starter. He was held in awe and beheld with trepidation by members of the PDP clan from all corners of the country. Such was his vice-like grip on the party especially in the Olusegun Obasanjo era.

But not any more today; the pendulum of power may have shifted especially after he capitulated during the recent ‘new’ PDP crisis and showed weakness in reining the want-away faction. Real political powers may well have relocated to the office of Mama Peace, Dame Patience Jonathan, the First Lady and wife of the president. A power monger and a spiked bludgeon, she may well have assumed the position of author and finisher in PDP in all the states and at all the levels. The morbid drama that has brewed between the presidency and the Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State is of course not unlike her kind of scripting and casting.

There is a story going round the political mill in one south east state that a group of PDP political elders had visited Aso Rock and after there long, syrupy introductions, Mama had reportedly asked after a House member from the state: “We do not see him, he does not come home and he does not mingle with the party in the state,” they had answered. It was said that Mama shot back at the beefy, old leader of the team that, “if you people don’t know where Hon. Lagbaja (let’s call him that) is, me i know; if he doesn’t come home, go and look for him. He is my son and if not for him, all of us will not be seated here today; he was the one who helped us quench the fire in the House recently. You people better go look for him, he is my son.”

With such undisguised endorsement, it is said that the House member has already set up a guber campaign office and all PDP members in the state are tumbling over themselves to be in his team.

Not many were therefore surprised when news went abroad that the wife of the president had already endorsed the next governors for three states in the coming election. Though the claim was refuted by her office but only to the effect that she has endorsed one aspirant only and not three. According to a release signed by her media aide, “In the case of Rivers State, the First Lady wishes to state categorically that the supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, is the leader of PDP in Rivers State and he enjoys the followership of the people of the state. The First Lady is solidly behind Wike.”

Anyone familiar with the Jonathan trajectory would have noticed that Dame Patience is the power behind the throne and being strong-willed will always have her way. The affected incumbent governors and the PDP hierarchy would, therefore, either be mere window dressing or they would be up for a big fight in the months ahead.
