  • EPL: VAR strikes again, as Tottenham draw Man. City

Substitute Gabriel Jesus had an injury-time goal ruled out by VAR as Tottenham left Manchester City with a 2-2 draw, scoring with their only two shots on target.

Jesus looked to have extended Man. City’s winning Premier League run to 16 games with an effort on the stretch, but a handball in the lead up by Aymeric Laporte meant Spurs benefited from VAR again, just four months after their historic Champions League quarter-final at the Etihad.

Manchester City went ahead on Saturday evening through Raheem Sterling’s deft far-post header from a superb Kevin De Bruyne cross (20), but Spurs were soon level as Erik Lamela’s low, curling effort from 20 yards found the bottom corner (23).

The champions went into the half ahead through Sergio Aguero’s sweeping close-range finish, again from De Bruyne’s wondrous right-wing delivery (35), but Spurs levelled again through Lucas Moura’s header, his first touch after being subbed on (56).

  • UPDATED: Liverpool wins 2018/2019 UEFA Champions League

Liverpool has won the 2018/2019 Champions League after Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi earned the Reds a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspurs in Saturday night’s Madrid final.

Having been beaten 3-1 by Real Madrid in last season’s final in Kiev, Liverpool were out to exorcise those demons with Jurgen Klopp also seeking his first trophy since becoming the club’s head coach back in 2015.

Given the dramatic nature of this season’s Champions League campaign, it was no surprise to see the final kick off in chaotic fashion as Liverpool were awarded a penalty inside the first 30 seconds of the match.

Referee Damir Skomina pointed to the spot after Moussa Sissoko was adjudged to have handled Sadio Mane’s cross, and Salah stepped up to fire the penalty over Hugo Lloris and into the net after just 118 seconds.

It was fitting that Salah struck, given that he limped out of last year’s final in tears after being injured following a clash with Sergio Ramos – an injury which also

Spurs pressed for a route back into a game which was typified by slack possession and mistakes from both sides, but Liverpool made it two late on as Divock Origi – the Reds’ hero of the semi-final second leg with two goals against Barcelona – struck a clinical finish in the 87th minute.

The win ensured Liverpool lifted their sixth European Cup, adding to previous successes in 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984, and 2005.

  • Lucas hat-trick helps Spurs to thrash Huddersfield

Tottenham Hotspurs Brazil forward Lucas Moura struck a superb hat-trick in a 4-0 win over relegated Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

The victory bolstered the home side’s hopes of a top-four finish in the Premier League.

Spurs were without the injured Harry Kane and Dele Alli but Lucas’s treble after an early Victor Wanyama goal were just reward for a dominant display against the bottom side.

The win in the early game took Spurs up to third place, a point ahead of Chelsea and four points clear of fifth-placed fellow London rivals Arsenal.

Arsenal, however, have a game in hand.

Tottenham made seven changes from the side that beat Manchester City 1-0 at home in the Champions League in midweek, with an eye on the quarter-final second leg on Wednesday.

Wanyama put Spurs ahead after 24 minutes with a fine individual goal after dribbling around goalkeeper Ben Hamer and tucking the ball into an empty net from a Ben Davies pass.

Three minutes later the hosts scored again thanks to a fierce right-foot drive by Lucas that flew underneath Hamer after the excellent Moussa Sissoko set him up on the break.

Spurs’ Fernando Llorente hit the bar after halftime and Huddersfield’s Juninho Bacuna had a late free kick tipped on to the bar before Christian Eriksen hit the post on the counter.

Six minutes later Lucas controlled Eriksen’s cross and fired into the bottom corner past the helpless Hamer before rounding off the win by smashing into the top corner in stoppage time.

  • Tottenham crush Man City at White Heart Lane

Tottenham Hotspurs crushed Manchester City 4-1 in one of the English Premier League matches played on Saturday.

Although Mauricio Pochettino’s men benefitted from some questionable decisions by match officials, they were deserved winners on Saturday.

Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring for City midway through the first half and there were suggestions that he was marginally in front of the last Spurs defender when Yaya Toure played him through, Goal reports.

Eric Dier pulled the hosts level in first half added time, although Kyle Walker was clearly in offside position before firing the cross that led to the equalizer.

Toby Alderweireld shot Tottenham ahead with a header from a looped free kick, before Harry Kane opened his goalscoring account for the season – although replays suggested he was also in offside position when he connected Christian Eriksen’s free kick which hit the crossbar and fell into his path.

Eric Lamela scored Tottenham’s fourth goal in the 79th minute to complete a torrid afternoon for the favourites.

  • Fernandinho silences doubters

    Fernandinho silences doubters

Premier League title chasers have had their share of flops from Brazil but this time have backed a winner with £30 million midfielder

AT first glance, Fernandinho does not come across as a £30 million man. This steady, dependable midfielder does the easy things well for Manchester City; has done, in fact, since joining the club last summer from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Yet that feat, in itself, deserves some praise. Arriving in a strange country where the standards far outstrip Ukraine’s top flight, where the pace of the game can hit newcomers like a sledgehammer, the Brazilian has done remarkably well to adjust so quickly, very few hiccups impeding his progress.

Perversely, that has meant he has not always caught the eye, leading critics to wonder what it is exactly the 28-year-old brings to a team previously featuring the experienced Gareth Barry.

Did City buy the wrong Brazilian? Should they have gone for Paulinho instead? Tottenham Hotspurs’ man, after all, finds a place in the Brazil national squad, perhaps at the expense of his counterpart.

Still time, however, to make amends before the World Cup. Luiz Felipe Scolari, the Brazil manager, cannot ignore developments at the Etihad where the number of doubters is dwindling by the day. Fernandinho’s contributions are now being better appreciated, partly thanks to a few recent goals. A brace against Arsenal was followed on Wednesday by a powerful drive at Swansea City that opened the scoring in City’s 3-1 win.

The sweet strike illustrated the player’s growing confidence. Moving on to a poor clearance after a corner, Fernandinho attacked the ball with real purpose and intent to set the tone for an important performance from a side that had previously struggled away from home.

Sat next to Yaya Toure, as he has done for most of this season, Fernandinho worked with his brain as well as his legs to try and combat Swansea’s extra man in that part of the field.

That challenge, in actual fact, must have tested his stamina to the limit seeing as his manager Manuel Pellegrini has asked the player to start every game over Christmas.

No rest for someone unfamiliar with this country’s peculiar traditions, someone more used to putting his feet up at this time of year. You would not know it though as Fernandinho battled through the wind and rain for the full 90 minutes.

In his favour, City’s No 25 does not have to try anything spectacular, not when so many around him are more than capable of that. David Silva, Samir Nasri, Sergio Agüero, Alvaro Negredo and Toure they can be left to produce the fireworks. For their more understated team-mate, it is about getting it and giving it, passing and moving a simple equation for the new man.

Importantly, Fernandinho seems happy with that. Having avoided injury, having steered clear of too many bookings, he has been granted a run in the side which now sees him looking totally at home.

Alongside, Toure must be delighted because the security offered by his new partner brings out the best in the big Ivorian. Enjoying a much better time than last term, Touré’s 12 goals must be partly attributed to the natural chemistry between the pair. Fernandinho’s caution grants Touré more freedom, spelling bad news for any opponent.

That also goes for teams facing City these days. Pellegrini’s side are looking ominously strong, with several match winners crucially supported by a central midfield that takes some beating.

After winning 11 major trophies with Shakhtar over eight years, Fernandinho is certainly no stranger to success. But this would be different. Should City end up winning the Premier League, the achievement would surely be ranked as his best.

A lad, who left home at 17 to pursue a career, has shown great fortitude over the years. Any City fan fearing another Brazilian flop, following in the footsteps of Robinho and Jo, can now rest easy. Fernandinho is not the type to let anyone down.
